DOWNS

PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. Edith Kiser Downs, 77, of 1513 Turfwood Drive died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Downs was born Jan. 18, 1924, in Rockingham County to Robert Jackson and Lessie Whicker Kiser. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Michael Andrews. Interment will follow in Beck's Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Downs lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Beck's Baptist Church and the Dorcas Sunday School Class. She was retired from AT&T after 31 years of service. Mrs. Downs was preceded in death by her husband Odell Ralph Downs Sr. in 1998. She is survived by two sons, Harry Odell Downs of Pilot Mountain, and Odell R. Downs Jr. of Rural Hall; two grandchildren, Andrea Downs Parker and husband Kenny of Nashville, Tenn., and Darrell Downs of Hickory; and a sister, Helen Kiser Shouse and husband O.E. Shouse of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beck's Baptist Youth Fund, 5505 Becks Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

DRAUGHN

MOUNT AIRY - The Rev. Nora Frances Worrell Draughn, 82, of 1023 Frank Street, senior pastor and lead minister of the Freewill Holiness Organization, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 2, 2001. The churches that she witnessed to in many states and her family who loved and cherished her will greatly miss her. We know because of her wonderful ministry that went on for 40 years, she is with the Lord and her husband, the Rev. Elliott P. Draughn, who ministered for many years along with his wife, Frances, at their church in Roanoke, Va., the Wabun Revival Center, and on the evangelistic field. Frances was born on Jan. 19, 1919, in Surry County to the late Prince and Alice Adaline Gates Worrell. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Esther and Bobby Johnson of Mount Airy, and Nora and Marvin Parsons of Salem, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Andrew and Pat Draughn of the home; two grandchildren and spouses, Steve and Sue Johnson of Mount Airy, and Sharon Williams and Lynn Doby of Mount Airy; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Lillie Draughn of White Plains, N.C.; and a brother, Woodrow Worrell of Mount Airy. The many saints of God will come together to celebrate her new life in heaven at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at On the Way Church, with services conducted by the Revs. Mark Meeker, Bradley Atkins, and Reggie Rakes, just a few of the many ministers that our sister and her husband worked with through the years. Interment will follow in the Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. FULP

Mrs. Sarah Meeks Fulp passed on Friday, June 1, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Feb. 7, 1925, to the late Rev. Will Meeks and Mrs. Susan- na Meeks in Hickory Grove, S.C. Mrs. Fulp spent her ear-ly life in Winston-Salem, where she attended the local public schools. After graduating from Atkins High School, she attended and graduated from Elizabeth City Teachers College. She earned a master's degree in education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro. She began her teaching career in Elizabethtown, moving from there to Mooresville and to Stewart, Va. She retired from the Stokes County School System in 1985. Mrs. Fulp began her life as a Christian at an early age being the daughter of a minister and being raised in a Christian home. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church, which became St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she served as a faithful member until her health began to decline about a year ago. Mrs. Fulp was an active member of the Skyland Park Community Flower Club #3 and the North Hampton Recreation Center Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Fulp was preceded in death by her parents; and her three brothers, John, Robert and Harold Meeks. She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 46 years, Mr. Warren H. Fulp of the home; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Wanda Beasley Moore; and three stepgrandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Meeks of the city, and Mrs. Jettlue Meeks of Hickory Grove, S.C.; an aunt, Mrs. Mattie Mae Howard of the city; 14 nieces and eight nephews and their families; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Among these survivors are a devoted and caring niece, Mrs. Vera Covater Hilliam, and a devoted and caring cousin, Mr. Carl Bankhead, also of the city. She leaves to mourn her passing three special friends, Mrs. Doris Thompson of the city, and Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wharton of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at St. Paul United Methodist Church (2400 Dellabrook Road) with the church's pastor, the Rev. Donald Jenkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the funeral service. They can be reached at the home, 567 Kinard Drive in Winston-Salem. Special thanks are extended to the caring staff at Forsyth Medical Center, ninth floor, and to the loving and caring staff of Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or to the St. Paul United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund. Clark S. JONES

Mr. Russell Thomas Jones, 70, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 24, 1930, in Forsyth County to James Robert and Thelma Russell Jones. Mr. Jones was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, and was retired from McLean Trucking Co. with 28 years of service. He graduated from James A. Gray High School in 1950 and excelled in all sports. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Iowa. His favorite enjoyment in life was helping his two grandsons, Rusty and Rich, with their racing careers. He was affectionately known as "Granddaddy" by everyone at the racetrack. Also he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a friend to everyone he met. His brother, J.R. Jones, preceded him in death. Mr. Jones is survived by his loving wife of 47 years Mrs. Virginia Staley Jones of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Lynne J. Harpe and husband Chip of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Renee J. Hunter and husband Rick of Advance; his mother Mrs. Thelma Russell Jones of Winston-Salem; two grandsons, Rusty Harpe and his wife Stacy Berrier, and Rich Hunter; one granddaughter, Brittany Hunter; a brother, Bobby Jones and wife Wanda of Winston-Salem; and a special friend, Jimmy Wallace. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Mark Harris and the Rev. Ron Staley officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home on Silas Creek Parkway. McDONALD

Mr. Vander W. McDonald, 82, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace. He was born July 21, 1918, in Candor to Aaron F. and Mary Boyd McDonald. He was a member of Central Terrace United Methodist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6367. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Mr. McDonald was preceded in death by his wife Mary Shouse McDonald. He is survived by a daughter, Joyce McDonald Coydendall and husband Robert; a son, David A. McDonald and wife Ruth of Clemmons; two grandchildren, Samantha Moore and Jennifer McDonald; and a brother, Foy McDonald of Candor. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Central Terrace United Methodist Church with the Revs. David S. Greene and Stan Glover officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel.

NORMAN

Mrs. Edith Cumbo Norman, 79, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, S.C. Mrs. Norman was born in Leaksville to Harvey and Carrie Pickrel Cumbo on Aug. 18, 1921. Mrs. Norman was a member of New Philadelphia Moravian Church. She received her L.P.N. degree from Forsyth Technical Community College and worked from 1965 to 1985 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Chilton Harvey Norman; two brothers, Horace and Victor Cumbo; and a sister, Della Niven. She is survived by a son, Timothy F. Norman of York, S.C.; a daughter, Rebecca N. Orr of Greenville, N.C.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at New Philadelphia Moravian Church with Dr. Worth Green officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes. SMITH

Mr. Clarence Leroy Smith of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, June 1, 2001, at his residence. He was born in Forsyth County to the late Fred Turner Smith Sr. and Lena Coletrain Smith. He is survived by a brother, Alvin R. Smith Sr. of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. The Rev. Lawrence Carvana will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. before the service. Interment will follow at the Evergreen cemetery. SPARKS

Mr. Charles Virgil Sparks, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Arbor Acres. Mr. Sparks was born in Davie County on Sept. 14, 1907, to Baxter B. and Mattie Foster Sparks. Mr. Sparks was a member of Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church. He was retired from Hanes Knitting Company with 45 years of service, and from Joyce Brothers Wholesale Company with 26 years of service. Mr. Sparks was preceded in death by his wife Margaret Hanes Sparks, and a brother, Cletus Sparks. He is survived by a brother, Ray Foster Sparks and wife Dot of Davie County; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sudie Hanes Clayton and husband Robert G. of Winston Salem, and Mrs. Nancy "Jacque" Hanes Joyce and husband Glenn of Winston Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. The Rev. Randy Sherrill will conduct a graveside service at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5 at Woodland cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Konnoak Hills United Methodist Church, 430 Weisner Street, Winston Salem, N.C. 27127 (Hayworth-Miller).

SPILLMAN

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Sallie Brown Spillman, 87, of Junction Road passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Spillman was born Jan. 6, 1914, in Wilkes County to the late Clinton J. and Dessie Templeton Brown. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mr. Alphonso Spillman, in June 1989; two sons, Dock L. and Calvin D. Spillman; two brothers, Zennie and Tom Brown; two sisters, Eva Hayes and Nobie Burnett; four half-brothers, Dodge Brown, Lon Brown, Luther Brown, and Gurney Brown; and a half-sister, Vertie McCrary. She spent her life as a homemaker raising eight sons and was of the Baptist faith. She is survived by six sons, Clarence L. Spillman and wife Nadine of Mocksville, Joseph A. Spillman of Mocksville, Richard T. Spillman and wife Joyce of Cooleemee, Keith M. Spillman and wife Cheryl of Salisbury, Roger P. Spillman and wife Debbie of Cooleemee, and Alphonso G. Spillman of Mocksville; 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, James R. Brown of Toledo, Ohio; and two sisters, Alice Gibson of Albemarle and Bessie Vick of Yanceyville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel with Robert Creason officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Park in Cooleemee. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. THOMERSON

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Mary Wilmoth Thomerson, 81, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2001, at her residence. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tenn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years Homer D. Thomerson. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth Beverly and husband Creed of Knoxville, Tenn., and Linda Fleming and husband Ralph of Lexington; two sons, Dean Thomerson and wife Doris of Florence, S.C., and David Thomerson and wife Linda of Florence, S.C.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Berry Chapel in Knoxville, Tenn., with the Rev. Dave Ward and Dr. David Hull officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn cemetery. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Gladys Gilbert Thompson, 76, of 296 Paynetown Road, the wife of the late Mr. James Thompson, died Friday evening at her home. She was born in Surry County on May 29, 1925, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Sollie (Alice Payne) Gilbert. She was a graduate of J.J. Jones High School and an active and devoted member of Paynes Memorial Triumphant Pentecostal Holiness Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Paynes Memorial Triumphant Pentecostal Holiness Church with Dr. Tony Carter serving as eulogist. Burial will follow in Paynes Memorial cemetery. She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Brenda Reid and husband Dennis of Mount Airy; a son, Lawrence Thompson of Mount Airy; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other relatives. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Paynes Memorial Triumphant Pentecostal Holiness Church. At other times, the family may be contacted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis (Brenda) Reid (360 Dudley Ave., Mount Airy). VEACH

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Helen Kennedy Veach, formerly of 1322 National Highway, died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in Britthaven of Davidson. She was born Oct. 10, 1914, in Davidson County, one of five daughters and five sons to Burl and Sallie Maude Newby Kennedy. She was married to Quentin Lee Veach, who preceded her in death March 11, 1976. She was a lifelong resident of Davidson County and a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the W.S. Cecil Sunday School Class and the Love Circle. She served as the organist there for 61 years. She and her sister owned Midway Florist, and she retired from Hudson Belk with over 40 years of service. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Mary Sink; a son, George Veach and wife Lou of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Mrs. Sally Craven and husband Johnny of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Sylvia Russ and husband Mickey, and Mrs. Becky Garrett and husband Eddie of High Point; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Veach of Scotland Neck, and Mrs. Ruby Veach of Thomasville; 10 grandchildren, Tod Veach, Tim Veach, Terri Black, Shane Craven, Travis Craven, Rod Russ, Ryan Russ, Rhett Russ, Kipp Garrett, and Shara Garrett; and eight great-grandchildren, Kerin, Kyle, Kurt, Eric, Stephen, Drew, Riley and Logan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. B. Joe Parker and Dr. Rick Auton officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Veach's daughter, Sylvia Russ (2848 Friendship-Ledford Road, High Point). WILMINGTON - Jimmy Wayne Wall, U.S. Navy Ret., died Saturday, June 2, 2001, in New Hanover Regional Medical Center. He was born in Surry County on Aug. 16, 1933, the son of the late Arthur M. and Effie Willard Wall, His first wife, Mrs. Peggy Pople Wall, also preceded him in death. Mr. Wall retired from the U.S. Navy as Senior Chief Boatswain Mate, and later taught auto mechanics at Cape Fear Community College for a number of years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Anne Canady Wall of the home; a stepson, Jonathan Wayne Odin and wife Mary of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Octavia Woosley and husband Webb of Winston-Salem, a nephew, Danny Woosley and wife Ruth and their son Ben of Kernersville. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 5, in Oakdale cemetery. Memorials may be made to one's favorite charity.

ALSTON

MARTINEZ, Calif. - Mr. Phillip Milton Alston, 56, formerly of Traphill, died. Mr. Alston was born Oct. 21, 1944, in Wilkes County to Ellis Brown and Thelma Sue Carson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Vietname War, and was employed with AT&T. He is survived by a daughter, Tina L. Cochran of Winston-Salem; a half sister, Betty Spicer of North Wilkesboro; a granddaughter, Shavon Cochran of Winston-Salem; two uncles, Curtis Alston and Luke Hampton, both of Traphill; a nephew, Jelani Powell of Boonville; two nieces, Daneen Smith of Elkin, and Jeannette Rogers (Marvin) of Japan. Memorial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at Sandy Creek Baptist Church in Traphill with the Rev. Ralph Hampton officiating.

BEALS

HICKORY - The Rev. George Roy Beals, 91, of Hanover Manor in Ashland, Va., and formerly of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, May 19, 2001, in Richmond, Va. Born in Coal Grove, Ohio, on Jan. 15, 1910, he was the son of Leroy Kramer Beals and Effie Martha Hankins. He was married to Pauline Gibson, who preceded him in death. He was a minister and pastored the Van Buren Baptist Church in Louisville, Ky., First Baptist Church in Carrollton, Ky., First Baptist Church Newton in Newton, Madison Avenue Baptist Church in Goldsboro, Highland Baptist Church in Hickory and Farmington Baptist Church in Farmington. He was a graduate of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louis-ville, Ky. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara Beals Boggs and her husband Robert of Ashland, Va.; a son, George Rodney Beals and his wife Martha of Danville, Va.; a sister, Sadie Higgins of Marion, Ohio; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. There will be a graveside service at 3 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, at Catawba Memorial Park and a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001, at the College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. The Rev. Charles Edwards will officiate. The family suggests that memorial donations be made to Hunton Baptist Church, 11660 Greenwood Road, Glen Allen, VA 23059; College Park Baptist Church, 1701 Polo Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or First Baptist Church, 871 Main St., Danville, VA 24541. Bass-Smith Funeral Home in Hickory is in charge of arrangements.

BROWN

ELKIN - Mrs. Mildred Blount Brown, 92, of 124 Oakwood Drive, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 26, 2001, at First United Methodist Church in Elkin, conducted by the Rev. Sandy Giles. Burial was in Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. She is survived by two daughters, Margaret Tucker of Elkin and Susan Schiller of Plano, Texas; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church in Elkin or to a charity of the donor's choice. Kennedy Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of funeral arrangements.

CHATMAN

THURMOND - Mrs. Patti Lynn Chatman, 49, of Po' Folk Lane, Mountain Park, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 8, 1951, in Guilford County, a daughter of John A. and Helen Seagle King. Surviving are her husband, Wayne Chatman; a stepdaughter, Janet Chatman; a stepson, Michael Wayne Chatman; a brother, Gary Seagle of Yadkinville; a sister, Mary Lambert of State Road; and a stepgranddaughter, Catherine Chatman. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville, by the Rev. Don Collins. Burial will be in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
