WILLARD

Mr. John Samuel "Sam" Willard Sr., 79, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at his home. He was born June 30, 1921, in Forsyth County to Leona Willard. Mr. Willard served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Christ Moravian Church. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Doris Harp Willard; two sons, John Samuel Willard Jr. and wife Shirley of Hamptonville and Timothy Willard and wife Sandra of Walnut Cove; a sister, Sarah Fansler of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Russell Sparks, Jeremy Willard, Justin Willard, Stephanie Willard and Brice Willard; and a great-grandson, Josiah Sparks. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, at Christ Moravian Church with the Rev. Polly Applefield and the Rev. Randy Vogler officiating. Burial will follow at the Moravian Graveyard. WOOD

RURAL HALL - Mr. Bruce Turner Wood, 75, passed away Sunday, June 3, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born May 8, 1926, to the late Harry N. and Eula Gaither Wood in Forsyth County. He married Mary Smith on July 28, 1956, in Winston-Salem. Mr. Wood was a charter member of the Lamb Worship Assembly in German-ton. He delivered the Winston-Salem Journal for many years. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ester Hartley. Surviving him are his wife, Mary Smith Wood of Rural Hall; two sons, Harry L. Wood and his wife Janice of Germanton and Jonatan C. Wood and his wife Tammy of King; a daughter, Kathy Wood Peck and her husband Steven of Raleigh; a sister, Jetty Tucker of Greensboro; two grandchildren, Christopher Peck and Deborah Naomi Peck, both of Raleigh; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Also surviving him are numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Interment will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Pastor Harry L. Wood and Associate Pastor Dennis McCown will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

BILLINGS

TRAPHILL - Mrs. Cora Bauguess Billings, 84, of 182 Lone Pine Lane passed away Friday, June 15, 2001, at her residence. She was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Wilkes County to Carl Billings and Sarah Cothren Billings. Mrs. Billings retired from Holly Farms and attended Stony Ridge Baptist Church. She is survived by five sons, William Maynard (Elsie) Billings, John Frank (Nancy) Billings, Brady and Shirley Billings and Grady Billings, all of Traphill, and Bryce Billings of Jonesville; and two daughters, Reba Billings Slawter of Elkin and Lorean Billings (Jimmy) Blevins of Jonesville; 25 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Ezra Billings; and a son, Linville Dale Billings. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednes-day, June 20, 2001, at Stony Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Keith Lyon officiating. Burial will be in the church cem-etery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening, June 19, 2001, at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin.

CULBRETH

Mr. Harold Lee Culbreth Sr., 89, of Winston-Salem died Monday morning, June 18, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. He was born Dec. 6, 1911, in Spartanburg County, S.C. to James John and Mary Joe Newman Culbreth. Mr. Culbreth retired from the U.S. Navy Reserve and from Bi Rite/Bestway Supermarkets where he was an advertising supervisor. He was a member of Oaklawn Baptist Church and a member of Triangle Volunteer Fire Department where he served as treasurer for over 40 years. Surviving are his wife, Aileen Stanley Culbreth of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Eddie West of Kernersville; a son and daughter-in-law, H.L. and Libby Culbreth Jr. of Kernersville; a sister, Alma C. Randall of Spartanburg, S.C.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oaklawn Baptist Church by the Rev. Kevin Kilbreth, the Rev. Paul Riggs, the Rev. Tom Southern and the Rev. Glenn Murphy. Mr. Culbreth will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors by the VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. DAVIS

Helen Louise Carter Davis, formerly of 850-E File St., departed this life Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was born to the late Clarence and Gaynor March Carter. She was a product of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. She retired from Forsyth Medical Center after 30 years of service. After retirement, she avidly provided daycare services for children as well as for senior adults. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Sylvia Butterfield. She is survived by three children including twin children, Ernestine Carter Griffin (Willie) of Winston-Salem, Ernest Carter of Athens, Ga. and Evelyn Davis of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Alice Carter of Winston-Salem, Mary Carter Watson of High Point and Cherry Hawkins of Atlantic City, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Doris Stephens (Tony) of Rex, Ga., Pamela Butterfield of Newark, N.J., Ernest Sellars (Sakia) of Charlotte, Carmen and Sabrina Griffin, Rodriquis, JaShawn and Sequioa Carter all of Winston-Salem; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Torres of Newark, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Carter of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Norvell Butterfield Jr. of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews, other family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1075 Shalimar Drive with the Rev. Annie Dalton officiating. Interment will be held immediately after the service in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church. DORSETT

Fletcher I. Dorsett, M.D., 86, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 24, 1914, in Davidson County to Fletcher Scott and Linnie Ann Harris Dorsett. Dr. Dorsett graduated from High Point College in 1937 and Medical College of Virginia in 1941. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a captain during World War II. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Thomas-ville and attended Central Terrace United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem for many years. Dr. Dorsett practiced family medicine in Winston-Salem for more than 50 years. He was a life member of the American College of Family Physicians, the N.C. Medical Society and Forsyth County Medical Society. He was pre-ceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Dorsett and Corrie Dorsett Gordon; and two brothers, William Dorsett and Harris Dorsett. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Pickard Dorsett of the home; two daughters, Sandra Dorsett Baker and husband Louis E. Baker of Glen Allen, Va., and Barbara "Bunny" Dorsett McClure and husband A.J. McClure of Wilmington; two grandsons, Louis Christopher Baker and Stephen Fletcher Baker; and two great-grand-daughters, Elysa and Danielle Baker. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

HEGWOOD

Mrs. Hattie Lakey Hegwood of Winston-Salem died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hegwood was born in Yadkin County Sept. 21,1914, the daughter of the late John W. and Minnie Mathis Lakey. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County, retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 47 years of service and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by three sons, Don, Carl Ray, and Bicket Hegwood. Surviving are her children, Sylvia Flippin and husband Mike, Jackie Chrysikos and husband Tim, and Bill Hegwood, all of Winston-Salem, and June Wooten and husband Sam of Stanleyville; a brother, Elbert "Elb" Lakey and wife Edith of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Hassell Hegwood of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19 at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. Skip Furrow. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory.

JOHNSON

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Frances Lodonna Hennis Johnson, 101, the widow of Mr. Claude J. Johnson passed away, Monday, June 18, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Johnson was born in Surry County, March 25, 1900, to the late Samuel Andrew and Ada Coble Hennis. She was a homemaker and was one of the founding members of the First Baptist Church of Mount Airy where she was past president of the Women's Missionary Union and a deaconess. She was a member and past Matron of OES Mount Airy Chapter 18 as well as past Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of the Order of The Eastern Star of North Carolina and was a member of Mountain View Gardeners Club. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Eva Johnson and Walter S. Page Jr. of Columbus, Ohio; two grandchildren and spouses, Frances Page and Stevan Dean Porter of LaCanada, Calif., and Walter Sharp Page III and his wife Beth Pease Page of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Stevan Dean Porter Jr. and Charles Johnson Porter of LaCanada, Calif.; a sister, Lillie Hennis Bondurant of Wilmington; a brother, Sam Andrew Jr. and wife Myrtle Foy Hennis of Mount Airy; and a dear friend, Debbie Davis and family of Ararat, N.C. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Hennis Johnson and Verona Hennis Wall; and by a brother, Hugh L. Hennis Sr. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the First Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert. Burial will follow in Oakdale cemetery. LAWSON

DANBURY - Mrs. Ruth Fagg Lawson, 86, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. She was born in Stokes County on July 16, 1914, the daughter of the late John Henry and Minnie Young Fagg. Mrs. Lawson was retired from Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital and was a member of Piney Grove Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar Lawson; a son, Chester C. Lawson; a son-in-law, Rudolph Bullins; and two sisters, Nora Bartley and Hettie Fagg. Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Peggie (Dennis) Mabe of Walnut Cove and Minnie Bullins of Danbury; a son and daughters-in-law, Rayvon (Doris) Lawson of King; Lucille R. Lawson of Danbury; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and seven step-great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, with Elder J.H. Keaton and the Rev. Chester Montgomery offic-iating. MODICA

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Ruby Berendes Modica, 50, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Jan. 21, 1951, to Harvey and Bernice Schildmeier Berendes in Waterloo, Iowa. Mrs. Modica was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Iowa and served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a captain. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, John P. Modica of the home; two daughters, Melissa Andrea Modica of the University of Georgia and Amanda Jane Modica of the home; a son, David Paul Modica of the home; a brother, David Berendes of Garrison, Iowa; aunt and uncle Clifford and Margaret Schildmeier of LaPorte City, Iowa; and her mother and father-in-law, John B. and Elizabeth Modica of West Caldwell, N.J. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Frank O'Rourke. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. REYNOLDS

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Herbert "Herb" Reynolds died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Lewisville on Oct. 30, 1914, to Lamb Archibald Reynolds and Bessie Binkley Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds was a lifelong Methodist. He was a faithful member and supporter of the Lewisville United Methodist Church, serving over the years in numerous capacities, in-cluding as chairman of the board of trustees and chairman of the administrative council. Mr. Reynolds and three of his brothers - Galloway, Frank and Daniel - founded L.A. Reynolds Co. in 1944. Herbert Reynolds served as the president and the chairman of the board of the company and its subsidiaries from 1961 until his retirement in 1974. He took great pleasure in the role the company played in building highways throughout the state of North Carolina, as well as in Virginia and Florida. Mr. Reynolds was involved in numerous local residential- and commercial-development pro-jects, as well as in ventures in the mountains of North Carolina, including the town of Seven Devils, Appalachian Ski Mountain and the Hawksnest Golf and Ski Area. Mr. Reynolds was a founding member of the Lewisville Civic Club and the Lewisville Volunteer Fire De-part-ment. He was a member of the Forsyth County Board of Education during the con-struction of the Lewisville elementary and high schools and the Lewisville Library. He helped establish the Lewisville Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason and a supporter of the Masonic Burn Center for Children. Mr. Reynolds was an avid outdoorsman and sports-man. He held racing records in the American Power Boat Association and had his license to pilot single-engine aircraft. Above all, he was devoted to his church, family and friends. Mr. Reynolds married Dorothy Lowder Reynolds, who preceded him in death in 1978. In addition, four of his brothers, Thomas, Frank, Galloway and Daniel Reynolds, predeceased him. Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife, Patsy Bullard Reynolds; a brother, Porter Reynolds and wife Pat of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Reynolds Hartle; four children, Lynne Reynolds Atkins, Jon Reynolds and wife Elizabeth, all of Lewisville, Timothy Neal Reynolds and wife Constance of Clemmons and stepson Grant Bullard and wife Anne Cochrane of Brevard; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grand-children. A memorial ser-vice will be held at 2 p.m. Wed-nesday at the Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Jim Faggart and Don Routh officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewisville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 305, Lewisville, NC 27023; or to the town of Lewisville for the Future Community Center, P.O. WILLIAMS

LEXINGTON - Mr. Garry Winfield Williams, 53, of Becky Hill Road died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at his residence. He was born Jan. 21, 1948, in Forsyth County to the late Lawrence D. Williams Sr. and Margaret Winfield Williams. Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War. He was preceded in death by a sister, Emma Williams. Surviving are a son, Garry Cameron Williams and wife Chastity of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Clara W. Farmer of Clemmons, Inez McIntyre of Winston-Salem and Winnie Scott Cook of Clemmons; two brothers, Lawrence Drewey Williams Jr. of Winston-Salem and Arnold Gray Williams of Plano, Texas; two grandchildren, Byron Nicoles Williams and Devin Nicole Williams; and a very close friend, Kenny Hanes. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with Mr. Marvin Baker officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

YARBROUGH

Mrs. Betty Tesh Yarbrough, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Yarbrough was born to Samuel W. and Cleve T. Tesh Aug. 23, 1928, in Winston-Salem. She was vice president of Yarbrough Transfer Co. and a member of Olivet Moravian Church. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Dorothy Tesh Livengood; and two brothers, Samuel W. Tesh Jr. and William H. Tesh. Mrs. Yarbrough is survived by her husband of 52 years John D. Yarbrough; two children, Jim Yarbrough and wife Ellen, and Jan Payne and husband Rob, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, David Yarbrough and wife Jonna of New Orleans, La., Mary Ellen Yarbrough, Katy Payne, and Allyson Payne, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Tesh of Chesterton, Ind., and Dora Tesh of Anaheim, Calif.; a brother-in-law, William L. Livengood of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow at Olivet Moravian Church Graveyard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. BOONE

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Joseph L. "Buck" Boone, 77, died June 18, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He and his wife were reared at the Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem. A veteran of World War II, he served in France and Germany. Survivors include his wife, Anne Sprinkle Boone; a daughter, Bonnie Boone Cooke and husband Harold of Winston-Salem; a son, Joseph Lee Boone Jr. and wife Janice of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Emily Johnson, Beth Hales and husband Terry, Amy Johnson and Kristin Boone; and four great-grandchildren, Jordan, Allie, Juliana and Kinley. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Lewisville United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, 27103; or the Methodist Children's Home. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

BYRD

ELKIN - Mrs. Ruby Cockerham Byrd, 81, of Austin-Traphill Road passed away Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin M. Byrd. She was the daughter of the late Rev. Carl C. Cockerham and Tessie Durham Cockerham. Ruby was born Dec. 14, 1919, graduated from Ronda High School and attended Catawba College. She was an active member of Benham Baptist Church, teaching in Sunday school and singing in the choir until declining health restricted her. Ruby was a devoted wife and mother who cherished her family, entertaining them with wonderful meals and holidays; she loved to garden, including beds of flowers. She is survived by three daughters and a son, Ann and (C.L) Hutchens of Lewisville, Marvorene and (Wayne) Edwards of Winston-Salem, Becky and (Steve) Norman of Elkin and Richard and (Wanda) Byrd of Taylorsville; nine grandchildren, Terry, Jan and Lynda (Ann), Marlina and Byron (Marvorene), Todd and Michael (Becky) and Tracy and Ben (Richard); and five great-grandchildren, Jamie, Ryan, Chris, Justin and Cody. Ruby leaves four sisters, Grace Burcham, Virginia Luffman, Ruth Yarboro and Gerri Hume. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Benham Baptist Church by the Rev. Ted Combs, officiating with Pastor Jason Wiles and the Rev. Stewart Roten. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Byrd will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends and loved ones from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. CLARY

Mrs. Helen Louise Collins Clary, 57, of 4131 Eisenhower Road passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of illness. Helen was born Jan. 16, 1944, in Baltimore, Md., to Helen Jefferson and the late Welton Eley. She attended Baltimore city schools, graduating from Eastern Senior High. She studied nursing and attended Coppin College in Baltimore. She also received a certificate in computer science. Helen was a former member of the Macedonia TVPH Church of God Inc., serving in many capacities including the senior choir, Mass choir and journalism department. Helen served more than 20 years as a foster mother in the cities of Baltimore and Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband, Larry V. Clary; her father, Welton Eley; and a brother, Reginald Haywood. She leaves to cherish loving memories her mother, Helen Jefferson; three daughters, Cheryl Lancaster of the home, Katrina Clary of Winston-Salem and Patricia Clary of the home; three sons, Vincent Clary of Baltimore, Anthony Coulson of Winston-Salem and Kelvin Clary of the home; a son-in-law, Kevin Lancaster Sr.; a grandson, Kevin Lancaster, both of the home; four brothers, Joseph, Robert Lee and Willie Jefferson, all of Baltimore and Elder Rinaldo Branson of Indianapolis, Ind.; two sisters, Joan Phillips of Winston-Salem and Josephine Green of Baltimore; three aunts, Sarah Keating, Catherine Jordan and Trezie Neal; an uncle, Roy Keating, all of Baltimore; and a host of other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Salisbury National cemetery. The family visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. (Russell)
