DAVIS

Helen Louise Carter Davis, formerly of 850-E File St., departed this life Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Durham Regional Hospital. She was born to the late Clarence and Gaynor March Carter. She was a product of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system. She retired from Forsyth Medical Center after 30 years of service. After retirement, she avidly provided daycare services for children as well as for senior adults. She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Sylvia Butterfield. She is survived by three children including twin children, Ernestine Carter Griffin (Willie) of Winston-Salem, Ernest Carter of Athens, Ga. and Evelyn Davis of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Alice Carter of Winston-Salem, Mary Carter Watson of High Point and Cherry Hawkins of Atlantic City, N.J.; eight grandchildren, Doris Stephens (Tony) of Rex, Ga., Pamela Butterfield of Newark, N.J., Ernest Sellars (Sakia) of Charlotte, Carmen and Sabrina Griffin, Rodriquis, JaShawn and Sequioa Carter all of Winston-Salem; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Torres of Newark, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Carter of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, Norvell Butterfield Jr. of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews, other family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 20 at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 1075 Shalimar Drive with the Rev. Annie Dalton officiating. Interment will be held immediately after the service in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family can be contacted at the home of the daughter, Ernestine Griffin, 4131 Morningside Drive. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home will be in charge of the service. (Clark S. Brown).

DAVIS

DANBURY - Mr. James Albert Davis, 82, of 102 Sheep Rock Road, affectionately known to family and friends as "Joe," passed away Sunday, June 17 2001, at the Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital after a period of illness. He was born July 2, 1918, in Stokes County to James Robert and Nellie Benton Davis. Joe was employed as a radiology aide for Stokes-Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. He retired after 39 years of service in 1993. Joe was the mayor of Danbury for one term of two years in 1989 and a four-year term in 1991. He was also a volunteer for the Danbury Volunteer Fire Department. For a number of years, Joe operated the film projector at the Walnut Cove Theater. Although his skills are too numerous to name, he was a master craftsman in woodwork, excelling in picture frames, including making frames for the Arts Council, the government buildings and the hospital. Joe was also known for his masonry work. He loved his country music and playing the guitar, and he was an excellent photographer. Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack, Bill and Ben; and his sisters, Eva, Mary Ruth and Eleanor. He is survived by a son, Donnell (Jackie) Allen; two grandsons, Audie (Sherria) Allen and Adrian (Sheri) Allen; three great-grandchildren, Joshua, Jazmyn and Kymari; a sister, Rachel (Joseph) Penn; a devoted niece, Susan (Garland) Washington; a devoted nephew, Ronnie (Christie) Wright; and a loyal, devoted friend and co-worker, Dorothy (Richard) Pettus. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21 2001, at the Danbury Community Church, with lay pastor Jennie Hemmrick officiating. Interment will be in the Danbury cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers and food, please make contributions to Hospice, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016. (Russell).

DORSETT

Fletcher I. Dorsett, M.D., 86, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 24, 1914, in Davidson County to Fletcher Scott and Linnie Ann Harris Dorsett. Dr. Dorsett graduated from High Point College in 1937 and Medical College of Virginia in 1941. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a captain during World War II. He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Thomasville and attended Central Terrace United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem for many years. Dr. Dorsett practiced family medicine in Winston-Salem for more than 50 years. He was a life member of the American College of Family Physicians, the N.C. Medical Society and Forsyth County Medical Society. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Juanita Dorsett and Corrie Dorsett Gordon; and two brothers, William Dorsett and Harris Dorsett. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Pickard Dorsett of the home; two daughters, Sandra Dorsett Baker and husband Louis E. Baker of Glen Allen, Va., and Barbara "Bunny" Dorsett McClure and husband A.J. McClure of Wilmington; two grandsons, Louis Christopher Baker and Stephen Fletcher Baker; and two great-grand-daughters, Elysa and Danielle Baker. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Norwood Green officiating. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

HOLDER

WINTER PARK, Fla. - Nancy Pfaff Holder, 67, died Monday, June 18, 2001. Mrs. Holder was a beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Born in Winston-Salem, she was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Donna Jean McNamara of Ponte Verdra Beach, Fla.; two sons, Daniel Lee Holder of Oviedo, Fla., and Douglas Jay Holder of Casselberry, Fla.; four sisters, Robbie Sue Hutchins and Dell Gentry of Winston-Salem, Pat Pfaff of Lewisville and Micki Patton of Boonville; five grand-children, Brian, Shannon and Kyle McNamara and Joshua and Nathaniel Holder. Services will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, 2001, at the Asbury United Methodist Church in Maitland, Fla. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. LOGAN

Mrs. Eliza "Trixie" Caudle Logan, 73, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly of natural causes at her home Tuesday, June 19, 2001. She was born Oct. 9, 1927, in Surry County to Oliver and Lela Scott Caudle. Mrs. Logan was an active member of Vernon Forest Baptist Church and a member of the Helping Hands Sunday-school class. She retired from AT&T with 23 years of service and was a volunteer for the Disabled American Veterans and the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission. She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, James Zane Caudle and twins Willie and Winborn Caudle; and her husband of 47 years, Lawrence O. Logan, in 1995. Mrs. Logan is survived by three children, Steven Lawrence Logan and wife Gwenn of Statesboro, Ga., Judy Elizabeth Logan Cockrum of Winston-Salem and George Oliver Logan of the home; three grand-children, Robert Lawrence Cockrum and wife Kelli, Johnathan Lawrence Logan and Stefanie Elizabeth Logan; a devoted sister-in-law, Thelma Caudle; two nephews, Terry (Pam) Caudle and Tim (Lisa) Caudle; and a niece, Crystal Caudle, M.D. A funeral service will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Terry Coats and the Rev. Sammy Shoaf officiating. Burial will follow at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. MARRIOT

Mrs. Frenchy "Frances" Gobble Marriott died June 16, after a sudden illness. She was born in Winston-Salem to the late Nettie Baity and Clyde C. Gobble Sr. During her education she won numerous awards for singing, debating and oratory. She was the valedictorian of her senior class at Griffith High School. She moved to Washington, D.C., in 1941 and began working for the National Security Agency. She was honored for her dedication to our nation with the NSA's Meritorious Service Medal. She retired form the NSA in 1963. Frenchy was an avid gardener, which was reflected in her love for nature and made her feel so near to the earth and its bounties. She was hostess to many garden tours at her creative and beautiful home and was an active member of several garden clubs. For many years Frenchy belonged to the American Theatre Guild. She preformed in several plays in the local area. She was a charter member of Trinity Moravian Church in New Carrolton, Md. She was still an active member of the choir and in the early years, she lifted her beautiful soprano voice as a soloist. She loved to sing and glorify God, especially through the music of her beloved Moravian Church. Frenchy is survived by her loving husband, Gilbert R. Marriott; two sisters, Marie Snyder and her husband Roger and Margaret Pressley; a brother, Clyde C. Gobble Jr. and his wife Bonnie; a sister-in-law, Zella Boatwright; and many nephews and nieces. The family will be receiving visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Advent Moravian Church, with the Rev. Tripp May officiating. Flowers may be sent directly to the funeral home or memorial donations may be made in Frenchy's name to Moravian Music Foundation, 20 Cascade Ave. Winston-Salem, NC 27127-2904.

McDONALD

ARCHDALE - Kathy M. McDonald died peacefully at noon June 18, 2001, at Beacon Place in Greensboro. She had been in declining health for several years. Kathy was born Jan. 17, 1968, to Vicki C. Reece and David Macaluso (who preceded her in death). She is survived by a son, Patrick Jacob McDonald of Cary; her parents, Dewey and Vicki Reece of Trinity; her stepmother, Vicki Macaluso of Kernersville; a sister, Melissa Macaluso of Thomasville; brothers Michael Reece of High Point, Allen Reece of Alachua, Fla., and Anthony Macaluso of Thomasville. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Cumby Chapel in Archdale. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, June 20, to receive visitors. Burial will be at Floral Garden Park Cem-etery. All other times, the family will be at the home of Dewey and Vicki Reece, 5269 Win-demere Circle, Trinity. MODICA

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Ruby Berendes Modica, 50, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Jan. 21, 1951, to Harvey and Bernice Schildmeier Berendes in Waterloo, Iowa. Mrs. Modica was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Iowa and served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a captain. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, John P. Modica of the home; two daughters, Melissa Andrea Modica of the University of Georgia and Amanda Jane Modica of the home; a son, David Paul Modica of the home; a brother, David Berendes of Garrison, Iowa; aunt and uncle Clifford and Margaret Schildmeier of LaPorte City, Iowa; and her mother and father-in-law, John B. and Elizabeth Modica of West Caldwell, N.J. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Holy Family Catholic Church by Father Frank O'Rourke. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church, P.O. MOSELEY

Mrs. Clara Clark Moseley, 81, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Brookridge Retirement Home. She was born July 14, 1919, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Henry C. and Florence Atkins Clark. Mrs. Moseley was a member of Knollwood Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was her husband, Mr. Woodford Tanner Moseley. A brother, Mr. James Clark of New York, survives Mrs. Moseley. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Knollwood Baptist Church Memorial Garden, with the Dr. Christopher C.F. Chapman officiating. (Hayworth-Miller)

OGBURN

Mrs. Kate Owen Pratt Ogburn, 81, of 2601 Country Club Road died Monday, June 18, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Ogburn was born March 11, 1920, to Ralph Mitchell and Searles Owen Pratt. Her early life and education were in Winston-Salem. She was a graduate of Salem Academy and College. Mrs. Ogburn was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was a life member of the United Methodist Women. In addition, she was a member of the Winston-Salem Junior League, the Dogwood Garden Club and Forsyth Country Club. She was a past president of the Salem Academy Alumnae Association and was a longtime volunteer at Southeastern Center of Contemporary Art. She was also a member of the Emma Bahnson Service League. Mrs. Ogburn is survived by a son, Dr. John Ogburn III of Blacksburg, Va. and his wife Amy; and three grandchildren, Michael, Matthew and Mary Catherine. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Salem cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. Memorials may be made to Salem Academy, 500 E. Salem Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; Salem College, Salem Square, Winston-Salem, NC 27108; or the Winston-Salem Foundation, 860 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27199-2511. Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

PASCO

Mary Pasco, 84, of Silas Creek Manor in Winston-Salem died June 18, 2001, after a brief illness. Four daughters survive her, Madeline Dempski of Winston-Salem, Janet Moran and Darlene Lauler of New Jersey and Joyce Martin of Ohio; 14 grandchildren, including Karen Legard of Lewisville and Michele Grissler and Kevin Gris-sler of Winston-Salem, Michael Dempski of Waynesboro, Pa., and Mathew Dempski of Danville, Va.; and eight great-grandchildren. Mrs. Pasco will be laid to rest in Bridgewater, N.J. Visitation will be held locally from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Vogler & Son's Reynolda Road Chapel.

PAULEY

Mrs. Alice Clay Pauley, 72, of Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 29, 1929, in Wayne County, W.Va., to General and Virginia Clay. Mrs. Pauley was a member of Grapevine Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Greenway Pauley Sr. Surviving are three sons, Greenway Pauley Jr. and wife Brenda and David Pauley and wife Cathy, all of Winston-Salem, and Michael Pauley of Ohio; four daughters, Brenda Beach and husband Darrel of Winston-Salem, Linda Hedrick and husband Otis of Mocksville, Patricia Keicher and husband Doug of Winston-Salem and Lola White and husband Luther of Mocksville; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Beatrice Coffman of West Virginia. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Grapevine Baptist Church in Lewisville, with the Rev. Ronnie Comer and the Rev. Ronnie Craddock officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

REYNOLDS

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Herbert "Herb" Reynolds died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Lewisville on Oct. 30, 1914, to Lamb Archibald Reynolds and Bessie Binkley Reynolds. Mr. Reynolds was a lifelong Methodist. He was a faithful member and supporter of the Lewisville United Methodist Church, serving over the years in numerous capacities, including as chairman of the board of trustees and chairman of the administrative council. Mr. Reynolds and three of his brothers - Galloway, Frank and Daniel - founded L.A. Reynolds Co. in 1944. Herbert Reynolds served as the president and the chairman of the board of the company and its subsidiaries from 1961 until his retirement in 1974. He took great pleasure in the role the company played in building highways throughout the state of North Carolina, as well as in Virginia and Florida. Mr. Reynolds was involved in numerous local residential- and commercial-development projects, as well as in ventures in the mountains of North Carolina, including the town of Seven Devils, Appalachian Ski Mountain and the Hawksnest Golf and Ski Area. Mr. Reynolds was a founding member of the Lewisville Civic Club and the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Forsyth County Board of Education during the construction of the Lewisville elementary and high schools and the Lewisville Library. He helped establish the Lewisville Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd degree Mason and a supporter of the Masonic Burn Center for Children. Mr. Reynolds was an avid outdoorsman and sports-man. He held racing records in the American Power Boat Association and had his license to pilot single-engine aircraft. Above all, he was devoted to his church, family and friends. Mr. Reynolds married Dorothy Lowder Reynolds, who preceded him in death in 1978. In addition, four of his brothers, Thomas, Frank, Galloway and Daniel Reynolds, predeceased him. Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife, Patsy Bullard Reynolds; a brother, Porter Reynolds and wife Pat of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a sister, Ruth Reynolds Hartle; four children, Lynne Reynolds Atkins, Jon Reynolds and wife Elizabeth, all of Lewisville, Timothy Neal Reynolds and wife Constance of Clemmons and stepson Grant Bullard and wife Anne Cochrane of Brevard; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lewisville United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Jim Faggart and Don Routh officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lewisville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 305, Lewisville, NC 27023; or to the town of Lewisville for the Future Community Center, P.O. Box 547, Lewisville, NC 27023 Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

SIMPSON

DOBSON - Mrs. Linda East Simpson, 58, of Bray Ford Road died at her home Tuesday morning, June 19, 2001, after a long illness. Mrs. Simpson was born in Surry County on Dec. 18, 1942, to the late Ralph and Viola Hall East. She was retired from the Surry County Health Department and was a member of the Stoney Knoll United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Mitchell P. Simpson of the home; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael and Suzanne Simpson of Clemmons, Steve and Kim Simpson of Dobson and Joe Simpson and his fiancee, Tammy Cutting of Greenville; six grandchildren; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Rachel and Albert L. Taylor of Asheboro and Shelby and Jesse Tucker of Mount Airy; and three brothers and two sisters-in-law, James E. and Linda East of Mount Airy, Don and Connie East of Pilot Mountain and R.J. East of Mount Airy. Many special and loving friends who were so kind and good to Linda and her family also survive Mrs. Simpson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at the Stoney Knoll United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Her body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the services. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

SMITH

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Daniel Chal Smith, 92, of Chal Smith Road passed away Monday, June 18, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Smith was born Feb. 21, 1909, to the late Daniel W. and Mary Miller Smith. He was preceded in death by four sisters and a brother. Mr. Smith worked as a self employed mechanic and was a member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Gwyn Smith and Ann Smith of Mocksville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Smith Grove United Methodist Church cemetery with Dr. Bob McLawhorn and the Rev. Ray Offerel officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. The family requests memorials be made to Smith Grove Hut Fund, c/o Sue Boggs, 516 Dulin Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. Davie Funeral Service LLC, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville will be serving the Smith family.

STARLING

Mr. William Gray Starling Sr., 65, of Winston-Salem died Monday, June 18, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Starling was born in Johnson County on Oct. 10, 1935, to Melvin Vick Starling and Lillie Atkinson Starling. He spent his early life in Smithfield, graduating from Smithfield High School. He attended Wake Forest College of Wake Forest and graduated magna cum laude in the first graduating class of Wake Forest College of Winston-Salem in 1957. Mr. Starling was the dean of admissions and financial aid at Wake Forest University. He was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. He served the church in many capacities and worked in the church nursery, which was one of his greatest compassions, for more than 40 years. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and golfer. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife, Elinor Wallace Starling of the home; a daughter, Jennie Starling Weekley and husband Mark of Advance; a son, Gray Starling and wife Layne of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Rebecca, Benjamin and Elizabeth Weekley and Virginia Starling; and a brother, Michael V. Starling and wife Rebecca of Fredricksburg, Va. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Maple Springs United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 22, at Wait Chapel, Wake Forest University, with the Rev. Robert "Buzz" Scott officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Riverside cemetery, Smithfield. Memor-ials may be made to the William G. Starling Scholarship Fund, c/o Development Office, Wake Forest University, P.O.
