STEELMAN

YADKINVILLE - Samuel Theon Steelman, 17, died unexpectedly Monday, June 18, 2001. He was born at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital on March 5, 1984, to Robert and Bettie Vance Steelman. He was a beloved brother to Cindy (Allen) Day, Christine (Chad) Shore, Dixie (Monte) Steelman and Robbie (Heidi) Steelman; and an uncle to Savannah and Mason Shore. Other family includes Ann Steelman, his stepmother; Angie Steelman his stepsister; Andy (Deana) Honeycutt his step-brother; Theon H. Vance Sr., his grandfather; and he will be sorely missed by many other family and friends too numerous to list. He was preceded in death by two beloved grandmothers, Ruby Eads Steelman and Bettie Allen Vance. He attended Boonville Christian Academy and Starmount High School. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing the guitar. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. His funeral service will be con-ducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Eddie Killian and the Rev. Tim Cross. He will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

STEPHENS

LADY'S ISLAND, S.C. - Dr. Alonzo Theodore Stephens Sr., 82, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, June 16 2001, at Beau-fort Memorial Hospital in Beau-fort, S.C. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, June 21, 2001, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Beaufort. Burial, with military honors, will follow in the Beaufort National cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church. There will be no viewing after the eulogy. Alonzo Theodore Stephens Sr., a son of John Wesley Stephens and Alice Elizabeth Melton Dicks, was born April 19, 1919, in St. Petersburg, Fla. Educated in the segregated public schools of St. Petersburg, he graduated from Gibbs High School and enrolled in Bethune-Cookman Junior College. He received his bachelor's degree in history and biology from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical State University in Tallahassee, Fla., in 1948. He later received the master of letters (1953) and doctor of philosophy degrees in history from the University of Pittsburg (1955). A career educator, Alonzo Stephens was a social sciences and English instructor at Gibbs High School in St. Petersburg and at W.A. Rochell High School in Lakeland, Fla. He served as an educational training officer for the Veterans Administration at Bethune-Cookman College and Florida Normal and Industrial College in 1946 and 1947, and as an assistant veterans coordinator at Florida A&M College from 1947 through 1948. Dr. Stephens' university appointments included an assistant professor of history, FAMU (1951-55); an associate professor of history, geography and business, Savannah State College (1955-58); a professor of history and the head of the department of history and political science, Tennessee State University (1958-84); a visiting professor of African history, Wake Forest University (1989-94); and a senior program lecturer at the University of South Carolina in Beaufort (1999-2000). Dr. Stephens was an internationalist and a civil-rights activist. Among his many associations were the Nashville Community Relations Council, the American Association of University Professors, the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians, the African Studies Association, the American Association of Middle East Studies, the Middle East Institute and the American Society of African Culture. He was an adviser to the Midwest and mid-South Collegiate Council in 1960; a president of the Nashville chapter of the United Nations Association of the United States from 1966 to 1967; and a delegate to the Commission to Study the Organization for Peace of the Carnegie Foundation of Peace. His foreign assignments took him to Israel, Egypt, Jordan, the former Soviet Union, Ethiopia, Kenya, Zambia and Tanzania. A veteran of World War II, Army Pvt. Stephens achieved the rank of personnel sergeant major and battalion sergeant major in the European and Western Pacific theaters. Dr. Stephens was a member of the Beaufort Graduate Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He was previously an active member of the graduate chapters of the fraternity in Nashville and Winston-Salem. Alonzo Stephens was raised in the McCabe Methodist Church in St. Petersburg. In Nashville, Dr. Stephens was an elder and an adult Sunday-school teacher at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. He was an elder and helped revive the Christian education program at Grace Presbyterian Church in Winston-Salem. Upon moving to Beaufort, S.C., he joined the Tabernacle Baptist Church and participated in the Elder Circle. He leaves behind a cherished wife of 50 years, Dorothy Mae Andrews Stephens; a devoted daughter, Andrea Stephens Allen and son-in-law J. Edward Allen of Beaufort, S.C.; a loving son, Alonzo Theodore Stephens Jr. of Philadelphia, Pa.; siblings Berthenia Stephens White of Miami, Fla., and John Edward Stephens of St. Petersburg, Fla.; grandchildren Karen Angeline Allen and Daniel Arthur Allen of Beaufort, S.C., and Sara Aaron Stephens of Bridgeport, Conn.; a godchild, Pamela Pryor Grace of Winston-Salem; in-laws Mary Andrews, William Henry and Gwendolyn Andrews, Daniel and Janice Andrews and Richard Andrews, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many appreciative students and dedicated friends. W. Leon Sherman Mortuary and Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Home for Funerals are in charge of the arrangements.

WAGONER

ENNICE - Mrs. Faye Brooks Wagoner, 87, of 5747 Glade Valley Road died Tuesday morning, June 19, 2001, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of James Wiley Wagoner. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Sue Wagoner of Sparta; a daughter, Clara Frances Smith of Sparta; a sister, Mae Crouse of Bel Air, Md.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Crab Creek Baptist Church's cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the services at the funeral home. The Rev. Fred E. Jennings and Elder Don Richardson will officiate. ALLEN

HICKORY - Martha Williams Allen died June 16, 2001, at the North Carolina Lutheran Home. Mrs. Allen was born Nov. 20, 1910, in Burke County to John Wesley and Martha Elizabeth Black Williams. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hickory. Mrs. Allen attended Salem College, and later worked for Secretary of State Gordon Gray, and as secretary to the Dean of the Wake Forest University Law School. She was a member Emeritus of the Service League of Hickory. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Colin Lawson Campbell and David Landrum Allen. She is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Williams Perry of Hickory; five nieces, Mary Frans Teeter, Margaret Frans Brady, Kathryn Jean Frans, all of Hickory, Molly Williams Hyder of Richmond, Va., and Susan Thorpe Bonham of Rock Hill, S.C.; three stepdaughters, Judy Allen Gale, Nancy Allen Lechrer, and Cloe Allen Threlked; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Hickory with the Revs. Pat Pearce and Jim Baliff officiating. Burial will follow at Oakwood cemetery. Lee Teeter, Frans Teeter, John Teeter, Colin Brady, Jay Teeter, Ben Teeter, Phil Bonham, and John Bonham will serve as pallbearers. The family will be at the residence of Mrs. Allen's sister, Mrs. Deedy Perry, at times other than the service. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 339 Second Ave. NW, Hickory, NC 28601. BOGER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. John Henry Boger Sr., 88, of Ridge Road, died Saturday afternoon at his home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday. They request memorials be considered for the cemetery Fund of Bethel United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. David Essex, 193 Call Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mr. Boger was born in Davie County July 26, 1912, to the late Charlie S. and Amanda E. Miller Boger, and was retired from Canon Mills with 41 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He enjoyed farming and gardening. He was preceded in death by his wife Nannie Rummage Boger in 1996; and three sisters, Mary Angell, Pearl White and Lois Brown. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Boger Jr. and wife Geraldine Smith Boger of Mocksville; and two brothers, Grady Boger of Mocksville and Clarence Boger of China Grove.

CRESON

Mrs. Goldie Anderson Creson, 74, of Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County on July 22, 1926, to the late William Edward and Pearl Fulp Anderson. After retiring from Sears, Mrs. Creson was employed by J.C. Penney. She was an active, faithful member of Fellowship Baptist Church, where she served as a deacon, Sunday school secretary and choir member. Mrs. Creson was preceded in death by her husband, James Edgar "Ed" Creson; a sister, Sallie Tucker; and a brother, Bill Anderson. Surviving are three sons, James Timothy "Tim" Creson and wife Helene of Lewisville, Jerry Dale Creson and wife Carole of Hickory, and Denny Gray Creson and wife Susan of High Point; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Creson, Derrick Creson, Ryan Creson, and Sydney Creson, all of Winston-Salem, and Jessica Creson of High Point; three great-grandchildren, Brandon Creson of Greensboro, and Bailey Creson and Dalton Creson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Blanche Hunter of Clemmons; a sister-in-law, Ruth Granger of Winston-Salem; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Revs. Alan Paschal and Wilson Harmon officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, June 18, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. ELLIOTT

Georgia Roanna Martin Elliott of Winston-Salem died Friday, June 15, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Ashe County on Nov. 30, 1907, to Polly Wallace and Jordan Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, William M. Elliott; and a daughter, Patricia Ann Cummings. Surviving are two sons, Martin J. Elliott of Mount Airy, and William M. Elliott of Oak Ridge; a daughter, Sharon Marie King of Aberdeen, Md.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Martin of Ashe County. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20 at McComas Funeral Home in Aberdeen, Md. Burial will follow in Bel Air Memorial Gardens.

HAWKS

EAST BEND - Mrs. Tangee Annette Christie Hawks, 41, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born November 22, 1959, in Forsyth County to Alton Bennett Sr. and Charlotte Coe Christie. Mrs. Hawks was a member of the Church of Christ Cottage Street, and was employed with Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for 24 years. Her father Alton Bennett Christie Sr. preceded her in death. Surviving are her husband Jeff Hawks, and one son, Zachary Daniel Christie, both of the home; her mother Charlotte Christie of East Bend; three brothers, Terry Christie and Keith Lynn Christie, both of East Bend, and Alton Bennett Christie Jr. and wife Michelle of Winston-Salem; one sister, Elizabeth Livesay and husband Chris of Lexington; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 at Boyer's Chapel Church of Christ by Mr. James Percival, Mr. Lawrence Warden and Mr. Roy Mitchell. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. HEGWOOD

Mrs. Hattie Lakey Hegwood, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hegwood was born in Yadkin County Sept. 21,1914, the daughter of the late John W. and Minnie Mathis Lakey. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County, retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 47 years of service, and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by three sons, Don, Carl Ray, and Bicket Hegwood. Surviving are her children, Sylvia Flippin and husband Mike, Jackie Chrysikos and husband Tim, and Bill Hegwood, all of Winston-Salem, and June Wooten and husband Sam of Stanleyville; a brother, Elbert "Elb" Lakey and wife Edith of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Hassell Hegwood of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19 at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. Skip Furrow. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel.

HENLEY

Mrs. Rachel Louise Walton Henley of 4633 Lasley Drive died Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Nursing Center of Oak Summit. She was born Aug. 23, 1913, in Borderland, W.Va., to Jessie Thomas and Mary Stone Walton. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Henley was employed by Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center for 20 years and retired from the Forsyth County Health Department in 1981. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who cherished her family with lots of good meals and holidays. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Faye Henley Kapp and JoAnn Henley Cadd; a son, Kenneth Wayne Henley; a granddaughter, Marsha Louise Doss; two grandsons, Van Brooke Doss and Adam Wayne Tilley; and a son-in-law, James "Jim" Doss. She is survived by a daughter, Wanda Henley Doss; sons Rodney Walton, Byron (Donna), Gerald Grant (Terri), and Thomas Mark (Robin); 21 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sons-in-law, Emery (Lucy) Cadd and Robert M. Kapp of Genoa, Ohio; a daughter-in-law, Jewel R. Henley; and a sister, Naomi Olinger of Blacksburg, Va. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. June 18, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Revs. Patrick Hamrick and Dewey Griffin officiating. Interment will follow at Crestview Memorial Gardens in Rural Hall. Memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4737 Mt. Pleasant Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family would like to thank the staff at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit for all the love and care they gave to our mother.

HILL

ELKIN - Mrs. Ruth Atkins Hill, 86, of Heritage Care of Elkin, Johnson Ridge Road, widow of the late Edgar D. Hill, died on Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Hill was born June 26, 1914, in Surry County, the daughter of the late Friel and Sally Brown Atkins. Mrs. Hill was a retired clerk with Belk's and a member of Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are two stepdaughters and a son-in-law, Edith Collins of Pilot Mountain, and Opal and Charles King of Thomasville; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Spencer and Catherine Hill of King, and Gilmer and Effie Hill of Pilot Mountain; 10 stepgrandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19 at Flat Top Primitive Baptist Church conducted by Elders Steve Moseley and Walter Branch. Burial will follow in the Union Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service. MITCHELL

DOBSON - Mr. Robert Grooms Mitchell, 61, passed away Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Mitchell was born Oct. 22, 1939, in Stokes County to Woodrow and Ethel Collins Mitchell. He was of the Baptist faith and was the oldest of eight children. His brother, Wilson Mitchell, preceded Mr. Mitchell in death. Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Tina Pinyan of Winston-Salem; two sons, Curtis Mitchell of Dobson, and Norman Mitchell and wife Dawn of Lexington; five grandchildren, Justin and Daniel Lineberry, and Ashley, Erin, and Haley Mitchell; five sisters, Mrs. Lucy Mabe of Danbury, Mrs. Elaine Holland of Stokesdale, Mrs. Vera Priddy of Danbury, Mrs. Willie Moser of Rural Hall, and Mrs. Cathy Shelton of Eden; and a brother, Mr. Franklin Mitchell of Walnut Cove. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Northwoods Baptist Church with Pastor Jim Thompson and the Rev. Henry Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory at Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

OMAN

LEXINGTON - Mr. Kermit Cline Oman Sr., 87, a resident of 515 Jake Shoaf Road, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Center. He was born April 11, 1914, in Davidson County, the son of Manley Oman and Fanny Hyatt Oman. He had been a resident of this area all his life. He graduated from Welcome High School and attended High Point University. Mr. Oman owned and operated City Shoe Shop in Thomasville for 65 years and the business is still operated today by one of Mr. Oman's sons, Kermit Oman Jr. He was a member of Midway United Methodist Church. On Dec. 1, 1941, he was married to Mary Elizabeth McLaurin, who preceded him in death March 15, 1982. He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Kevin Oman. Surviving are three sons, Kermit Cline Oman Jr. and his wife Donna of Lexington, William Robert Oman of Greensboro, and James "Jim" David Oman and his wife Mary Ann of Lexington; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in J.C. Green & Sons Chapel with the Rev. Harry Sellers officiating. Burial will follow in Midway United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, and at other times the home of Mr. Oman's son, James Oman (470 Jake Shoaf Road). YARBROUGH

Mrs. Betty Tesh Yarbrough, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Yarbrough was born to Samuel W. and Cleve T. Tesh Aug. 23, 1928, in Winston-Salem. She was vice president of Yarbrough Transfer Co., and a member of Olivet Moravian Church. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Dorothy Tesh Livengood; and two brothers, Samuel W. Tesh Jr. and William H. Tesh. Mrs. Yarbrough is survived by her husband of 52 years John D. Yarbrough; two children, Jim Yarbrough and wife Ellen, and Jan Payne and husband Rob, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, David Yarbrough and wife Jonna of New Orleans, La., Mary Ellen Yarbrough, Katy Payne, and Allyson Payne, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters-in-law, Sharon Tesh of Chesterton, Ind., and Dora Tesh of Anaheim, Calif.; a brother-in-law, William L. Livengood of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel. Burial will follow at Olivet Moravian Church Graveyard. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, or Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. BILLINGS

Mr. Eiljah Mack Billings, 80, of 1615 E. 5th St., passed away Thursday, June 28, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Lancaster, S.C., and had resided in Winston-Salem for over 50 years. He was of the Baptist faith, and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He is survived by a son, Orlin Elijah Billings (Chastity) of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Cameron and Brittany Billings; two sisters, Janie Littlejohn and Daisy Hairston, both of Detroit, Mich.; a devoted friend, Brenda Jones of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 2, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas White officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday at the Russell Funeral Home. (Russell)

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Mary Lucille Joyner Boger, 70, of Cana Road, died late Friday night at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Liberty Baptist Church with the Rev. Marvin Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. They request memorials be considered for Liberty Baptist Church, c/o Lowell Reavis, 422 Duard Reavis Road, Mocksville, NC 27028, or to Cancer Services, Inc. of Davie County, 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services on Monday. Mrs. Boger was born in Yadkin County July 10, 1930, to the late Stanley Dolphus and Sarah Gertrude Holland Joyner, and was retired with 36 years of service at Sarah Lee Corp. She was a lifelong member of the Liberty Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir and was a member of the Helpers Class. She was a well-known community Samaritan. Mrs. Boger was a graduate of Harmony High School, Class of 1948. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Craig Boger in 1998, to whom she was married for 46 years. Also deceased are two brothers, Claude Joyner and Ralph Joyner; and a sister, Clydean Joyner. Surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Mark (Dana) Wolfington of Winston-Salem; a sister, Mrs. Lorene (Jack) Moore of Yadkinville; a brother, Mr. Clay (Glenna) Joyner of Harmony; several nieces and nephews; and three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lula Mae Wells Joyner of Yadkinville, Ruby Boger and Garnet (Ezra) Shore, both of Mocksville. The family wishes to thank the special nurses and staff of the Ninth Floor at Forsyth Medical Center for all their support and care.
