BROWN

EAST BEND - Mr. Roy Lester Brown, 86, of 4432 Mt. Bethel Church Road, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Yadkin County to Winfield and Mary Wooten Brown. Mr. Brown was a lifelong member of Forbush Friends Meeting. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Hicks Brown; and by his second wife, Gladys Snow Brown; four brothers, Buford Brown, Marm Brown, Conard Brown, and Curtis Brown; and three sisters, Cora Webb, Rosa Davis, and Neva Davis. Surviving are a son, Lester V. "Sonny" Brown of Kernersville; five step-children, Shirley (Earl) Bryant of Winston-Salem, Shelbie (C.L.) McKnight of Boonville, Freddie (Ed) Masencup of Pfafftown, Jimmy (Nancy) Snow of Fredricksburg, Va., and David (Brenda) Snow of Walkertown; two sisters, Nina Morris of East Bend and Carolyn Groce of Winston-Salem; a brother, Joe W. Brown of Dunnellon, Fla.; 18 step-grandchildren; 26 step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2 at the Forbush Friends Meeting by the Rev. Jake Penley. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 to lie instate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. CLODFELTER

HIGH POINT - Mr. John D. Clodfelter, 83, a resident of 203 Nubbin Ridge Road, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. He was born in Davidson County July 24, 1917, a son of John William Clodfelter and Dora Wyre Clodfelter, and was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II, and the recipient of three Purple Hearts. He was a hog farmer and a tobacco farmer. He was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. On April 13, 1941, he was married to Miss Virginia Troxler, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Richard (Brenda) Pulliam of High Point; two sons, Donald Wayne Clodfelter and wife Joyce Ann, and John Dee Clodfelter and wife Sherre, both of High Point; a brother, Jay Clodfelter of High Point, four grandchildren, Dean Pulliam, Jamie Pulliam, Warren Schucker, and Don Clodfelter; and two great-grandchildren, Caytie Pulliam and Bailey Schucker. He was preceded in death by a son, Bobby John Clodfelter. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Monday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mike Goode and William Crummett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will remain at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Wallburg until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, and at other times at the residence.

COMBS

SPARTA - Mrs. Mary Johnson Combs, 89, of 431 North Main Street in Sparta, died Friday evening, June 29, at Alleghany Memorial Hospital in Sparta. She was the widow of Lester Combs. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Wayne Cleary, and Betty Combs Hines and William A. Hines, all of Sparta; two grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Martha Cleary of Winston-Salem, and Waynna and Greg Wyatt of Sparta; a brother-in-law, Clay Combs of Kansas; and a sister-in-law, Tavie Hines of Maryland. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Grandview Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in the Sparta cemetery. The Revs. Rawley W. Amburn and Russell Mabe will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta, and at other times at the homeplace (431 North Main Street in Sparta). ELDER

The life of Margaret Martin Elder began March 13, 1922, as the daughter of the late Richard Martin and Trudie Martin in Stokes County. She expired Friday, June 29, 2001, after an extended period of illness. She was married to the Rev. William Elder for 60 years. They have a daughter, Carolyn M.L. Glenn of Houston, Texas, and a goddaughter, Miss Shawn Duncan of Washington, D.C. She was a very faithful member of Middle Fork Christian Church, where she served as a member of the senior choir, the Christian Women's Fellowship, the usher board, past church treasurer, the Sunday school, church building fund, benevolent fund and Minister's Mates of the Piedmont District. She is survived by her husband William Elder of Winston-Salem; daughter Carolyn Glenn (Shelton) of Houston, Texas; goddaughter Shawn Duncan of Washington, D.C.; three grandchildren, Shelton William Glenn (Angela) of Los Angeles, Calif., Kevin Glenn of Houston, Texas, and Kimberly Glenn of Houston Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Anna Jane Blackstock (Billy) of Stoneville, and Mrs. Overa Kellum of Madison; a brother, Howard Scales (Geraldine) of Madison; and a host of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 3 from Middle Fork Christian Church where the Rev. Dennis Peachtree will officiate. Burial will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The remains will be placed in the church at noon to lie in state until the service hour. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home.

FINNEY

JONESVILLE - Mr. James Daniel "J.D." Finney, 71 of 4825 Loff Street, passed away Saturday morning, June 30, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem after a brief period of illness. He was born to the late Ernest R. and Marie Colbert Finney March 20, 1930, in Yadkin County. He was retired from Ronda Wear Textiles after 33 years service. He served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. Mr. Finney was preceded in death by a special beloved grandson, Seth Seagraves; and a sister, Mozelle Johnson. He is survived by his wife Virginia Billings Finney of the home; a daughter, Deborah Seagraves of Statesville; two granddaughters, Jennifer Lane and Kayla Seagraves; two great-granddaughters, Victoria White and Katelyn Swaim; four brothers, Fred (Lorene) Finney, and Paul (Ann) Finney, both of Jonesville, and Ernest Lee Finney, Jr. and wife Peggy, and Grady (Olene) Finney, both of Elkin; and a sister, Bonnie (Braxter) Gentry of Elkin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 2 at Gentry Family Chapel in Jonesville with the Revs. Roger Groce and Don Hudson officiating. He will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 1 at Gentry Family Funeral Home (4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville). FRYE

ELKIN - The Rev. Hassell Aubrey "Hack" Frye Sr., 84, left to be with his heavenly father on Friday, June 29, 2001, at the Wake Forest Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife of 57 years Betty Ray Loflen Frye of the home; and a son and daughter-in-law, Hassell Aubrey Frye Jr. and Cathy of Westfield, Mass. He also leaves two granddaughters and their husbands, Caroline Margaret Babinski and Jason, and Cynthia Rae Crichton and David; and four great-grandchildren, David Dennis and Adrian Aubrey Crichton, and Cory Michael and Kayce Ann Babinski, all of Westfield, Mass.; as well as many nieces and nephews in North Carolina and Virginia. Rev. Hassell was a direct descendant of John Fry of Albemarle County, Va., who fought in the Revolutionary War. He was born in Pilot Mountain May 19, 1917, and was the last living of nine children of Samuel Jesse Fry and Mattie Mae Thor Fry. He grew up in Pilot Mountain and graduated from Pilot Mountain High School where he was an All-State baseball and basketball player. After high school, he worked for the A and Y Railroad until being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1941. He attained the rank of Technical Sergeant and was honorably discharged in 1945. He was married on Nov. 25, 1943, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and after his tour of service, moved to Elkin with his family to play semi-pro baseball and basketball with The Blanketeers of Chatham Manufacturing Co. He remained employed at Chatham's until his retirement in 1972. In the early 1950s, he was one of the founders of the Elkin Little League and coached the Dodgers and many all-star and championship teams. He also helped start the Elkin YMCA Church Youth Basketball League and was a longtime ham radio operator whose call sign was K4NTZ. In 1962, he was ordained a Baptist minister and pastored numerous churches in Surry and Yadkin counties, including Fairview Baptist, Shiloh Baptist, Huntsville Baptist, and East Bend Baptist. Hack will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was a beloved member of the community and touched many lives with his kindness and strong religious beliefs and principles. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Dobson, with the Revs. Tommy Johnson and Larry Lefler officiating. Burial will follow in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in Elkin with full military honors conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2019 of Mount Airy and VFW Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. FRYE

The Rev. Norman Sanford Frye, 65, of Winston-Salem, entered into his eternal rest at his residence on June 30, 2001, surrounded by his loving wife and loving children. Rev. Frye was born on March 11, 1936, in Forsyth County to Lawrence William and Mary Magdeline Dorsett Frye. He was called to the ministries in 1957 and began his ministries at Yadkin College Baptist Church. Rev. Frye has been the minister at Fellowship Baptist Church since 1994. Rev. Frye was an avid outdoorsman and talented woodworking craftsman, leaving his children and grandchildren to carry on his legacy. Rev. Frye is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Mrs. Mary Nifong Frye of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Sherry Smith and husband Manard of Winston-Salem, and Ms. Deborah Guthrie of Winston-Salem; a son, Norman E. Frye of Winston-Salem; five granddaughters and three great grandsons. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 2 at Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Aaron Carter officiating. HAYES

James Madison Hayes Jr., a retired local attorney, World War II Veteran, and former state legislator, died Saturday, June 30. Mr. Hayes, the son of the Rev. James M. and Aline Pace Hayes, was born April 5, 1919, in Chattanooga, Tenn. He was married to Thomasine Herring of Kinston, who survives him. He graduated from Beckley (W. Va.) High School and from Wake Forest University, where he completed his undergraduate and LLB degrees in four years. Admitted to both federal and state bars in 1940, Mr. Hayes served briefly with the Federal Bureau of Investigations before enlisting in the Marine Corps in January 1941. During World War II he served as an infantry officer on Guadalcanal and, after contracting malaria, as judge advocate and chief legal officer at Camp Lejeune. He attained the rank of major before receiving his discharge and returning to Winston-Salem, where he practiced law for more than 50 years. Mr. Hayes continued to serve his country with the 120th Infantry Unit of the N.C. National Guard as Lt. Colonel. He was a leader in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, becoming state commander and national junior commander. Under his direction, Armed Forces Day became a major local event during the 1950s, featuring parades and nationally known celebrities. In 1946, he was elected to the North Carolina State Legislature, where he was instrumental in passing legislation that established the North Carolina Museum of Art. He was active in the Forsyth County Bar Association and served as a deacon of the Wake Forest Baptist Church. Mr. Hayes will be remembered as a committed and articulate advocate for his clients and as a colorful member of the bar. He had a passion for collecting, be it animals or works of art. Mr. Hayes was preceded in death by his younger brother, Harold Thomas Pace Hayes, writer and former editor of Esquire magazine, who died in 1989. In addition to his wife, Mr. Hayes is survived by a sister, Phyllis Hayes Johnson of Tega Cay, S.C.; two nieces, Virginia Johnson Cummings of Burlington, and Carrie Hayes O'Brien of Luxembourg; two nephews, Thomas Pace Hayes of New York City, and Robert Edward Johnson of Atlanta; a great-niece, Olivia O'Brien; and two great-nephews, Bejamin McRae Cummings and Thomas Hayes Cummings. HERNDON

DURHAM - Mrs. Mary Ellen Rhew Herndon, 72, of 303 E. Carver St. died at Northwood Manor Thursday, June 28, 2001, after three years of declining health. Mrs. Herndon was a native of Chatham County and had lived in Durham most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Ervin Winston Rhew and Bessie Ashley Rhew. Mrs. Herndon was a faithful member of Liberty Baptist Church until her illness prevented her from attending. She was a retired switchboard operator with IBM. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry C. Herndon in 1993. She is survived by two brothers, Earl Rhew of Durham and Ervin Rhew of Charlotte; and four sisters, Myrtle Atkins, Frances Bowden and Mae Roycroft, all of Durham, and Catherine Kennedy of Kernersville. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in Woodlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Jack Cox officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home of her brother, Earl Rhew, 2809 Pleasant Green Road. Flowers are acceptable.

HUNTER

Mrs. Ruth Martin Hunter, 88, of Birchwood Drive, died Saturday morning at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hunter was born in Stokes County on Oct. 4, 1912, to William Percy and Dora Foley Martin. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and was retired from Prudential Life Insurance Co. A longtime member of Ardmore United Methodist Church, she was a member of the Alma Nunn Sunday School Class. Mrs. Hunter was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel D. Hunter; a brother, Maurice Martin; and a sister, Louise Martin. She is survived by two brothers, Aubrey Martin and wife Grace of Stuart, Va., and Charlie Martin and wife Myra of Patrick Springs, Va.; and 26 nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ardmore United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lisa Wishon officiating. Mrs. Hunter will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. MILLER

HIGH POINT - Felix Franklin Miller Jr., 72, of 3831 North Main Street, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. He had been critically ill for six weeks. Mr. Miller was born April 28, 1929, in Davie County, a son of Felix F. Miller and Sue Dean Foster Miller. A resident of High Point all his life, he graduated from High Point High School in the Class of 1947. He was founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Miller Desk, Inc. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, a mason member of Numa F. Reid Lodge #344 A.F. & A.M., a Shriner member of Oasia Temple A.A. O. N.M.S. in Charlotte, and a member of the High Point York Rite Bodies, A member of Hatteras Marlin Club, Clark Creek Hunting Club, and the String and Splinter Club. On Oct. 29, 1949, he married Maxine Farlow, who survives of the home. Also surviving are a daughter, Ms. Molly Miller Keuhn of Raleigh; five sons, Felix Franklin Miller III and wife Kay, Frederick Max Miller and wife Manuela, David Craig Miller and wife Robin, John Lindsay Miller and wife Michele, and Robert Thomas Miller and wife Susan, all of High Point; his mother Mrs. Sue Dean Miller of High Point; 10 grandchildren, Franklin, Morgan, Marcella, Chelsie, Logan, Caroline, Austin, Mat, and Will Miller, and Skyla Keuhn; and a sister, Mrs. Sara Ledford of High Point. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Presbyterian Church with the Revs. Harry Cole and Lisa M. Mullen officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park cemetery. The body will remain at Sechrest Funeral Home on E. Lexington Ave. until placed in the church 30 minutes before the funeral. YADKINVILLE - Mr. Keith S. Moser, 55, died Friday, June 29, 2001, at his home, He was born May 8, 1946, in Forsyth County to Buford S. and Mildred Brown Moser. He was a member of the Redland Pentecostal Holiness Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 33 1/2 years in the Research and Development Department. Surviving are his wife of 35 years Mrs. Elaine Welch Moser of the home; a daughter, Kimberly M. Blalock (and husband Gary) of Mocksville; a son, Brian Keith Moser (and Dayna McFarlane) of Courtney; four grandchildren, Brittany Moser of Murrayville, Ga. Lyndsey A., Brooks A. and Nathan A. Blalock, all of Mocksville; his father-in-law and mother-in-law Ralph Welch Sr. and Marjorie Welch of Hamptonville; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Pardue, and Trish (and husband Bobby) Todd; brother-in-law, Ralph Welch Jr.; sister-in-law, Marie Foster; special cousins, Jerry Moser and Terry Jolly, both of Winston-Salem; special friends, the Hubert Dunn family, and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Fritz; four brothers, an uncle; and nieces and nephews, Terri Coffman, Sherri Miller, Brent Pardue, Bradley Foster, Jonathan Welch, Jamie Welch and Suzanne Welch. POWER

KING - Joyce Marion Cook Power was born July 4, 1919, in Twickenham, London, England, to Prudence Marion Ann Cook (nee Dear) and Arthur Frederick Cook. Joy died peacefully June 26, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant siblings Stewart and Clare; beloved husbands Frederick Charles Edward Cowlin in 1950 and Reginald John Power in 1988; and a sister, Audrey Prudence Bird. She leaves behind her sister, Jean Ann Lewis of Cambridgeshire, England; her brother, Donald Arthur Vernon Cook of Peterborough, England; a son and daughter-in-law, Roderick and Tanya Cowlin of Javea, Spain; daughters and sons-in-law Pat and Andrew Bird and Julia and Sam Simmons of King; grandchildren Hannah Mc-Sawley, Jason Cowlin, Helen Bird, Daniel Simmons and Michael Sim-mons; and great-granddaughter Chloe Eden Sim-mons. As a young wife, she accompanied Freddie Cowlin to Wales and Scotland, but then stayed with her parents in war-torn London as his Army service took him to India. After Freddie died, she and Reg Power operated a busy guesthouse at the Rectory in Folksworth, England, as well as living in Javea, Spain. During her 22 years in North Carolina, Joy had been an active member of King Moravian Church. She took pleasure and pride in making candy with Reba Elliott at the Sweet Tooth Candy Store and in managing the King Community Center. During her retirement years, Joy wrote two novels, created a beautiful garden, and crocheted and knitted for her family and for premature babies Baptist Medical Center. All those who knew her will remember her for her great spiritual strength and ability to impart love and peace to those around her. She is now celebrating her life with those who have gone on before and is reaping the much-deserved legacy of her name: Joy. A memorial service in celebration of Joy's life will be held at King Moravian Church at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 3. A time of fellowship will be held in the church fellowship hall from 6 the same evening. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Kate B. REID

Early Tuesday morning, June 26, 2001, Prophetess Linda Eileen Watson Reid, 45, of 625 W. Sixth St., Apt. 8G, completed her work and was given peace at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center following a period of illness. She was born in North Philadelphia, Pa., to Robert and Reecie Watson on Aug. 28, 1955, and lived most of her life in Winston-Salem. She was a licensed nurse at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center before becoming ill. She was of the Apostolic faith and a patient at Piedmont Dialysis Center. She leaves to cherish her memory a daughter, Aquilla Reid, and a grandson, Jeremiah Reid; her parents Apostle R.T. and Reecie Watson; three brothers, Tommy Watson, Timothy (Karen) Watson, and Joseph (Robin) Watson; two sisters, Phebe (Randall) Cooper, and Marian (Stephan) Morris; a devoted mother-in-law, Jessie Thompson; a devoted sister-in-law, Maggie Cauldwell Watson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services for Prophetess Reid will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 2, from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. Kacie O. Moore officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Monday at the Russell Funeral Home. Mr. Ray Anthony Robinson, of 1159 East 15th Street, passed away Tuesday at his home. He was born in Winston-Salem where he attended the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County schools. He was the son of Barbara Robinson Goddin and the late Abner Goddin. He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Surviving are his mother Mrs. Barbara Robinson Goddin of Winston-Salem; his son, Ray Anthony Robinson Jr. of the home; two sisters, Darlene Robinson and Shelia Robinson, both of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Don (Gwendolyn) Robinson and Barry (Cynthia) Robinson, both of Winston-Salem; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends; and his grandfather Mr. Clyde Jefferson of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the National cemetery in Salisbury. The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, 30 minutes prior to the services. The procession will assemble and leave from the home of Mrs. Barbara Goddin (3608 Carver Road) enroute to the church at 10:40 a.m. Monday. (Johnson-Howard-Robinson)
