LOWRY

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Esther R. Hukle Lowry, 99, of Boone Farm Road passed away Monday, July 2, 2001, at Autumn Care Nursing Facility. Mrs. Lowry was born Nov. 14, 1901, in Clark County, Ky., to the late Wallace and Elizabeth Everman Hukle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Taylor Lowry; a brother, Claude Hukle; and a sister, Ethel Roe. She worked as a bookkeeper and was a member of Jericho Church of Christ. Survivors include a son, Harding Lowry of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at Edgington, Mullins and Taylor Funeral Home in Winchester, Ky.

MOSER

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Guy M. Moser Jr., 65, died Saturday, June 30, 2001. Mr. Moser was born Dec. 7, 1935, in Charlotte, to Guy M. Moser Sr. and Ivy Elizabeth Black. He was a graduate of N.C. State University and was an electrical engineer. Surviving are his wife, April M. Moser of the home; a daughter, Jennifer Lorraine Moser of Raleigh; a son, Kevin M. Moser of New York, N.Y.; a grandson, Billy Joe Ennis; and a sister, Patricia "Sis" Seegars of Harrisburg. A memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Galloway Memorial Episcopal Church in Elkin by the Rev. Joan Vella. In lieu of floral or food tributes, the family requests memorials be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter or to the American Cancer Society.

SAWYER

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Daniel Webster Sawyer, 86, died July 1, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital. He was born Oct. 17, 1914, in Belhaven, the son of the late Daniel Webster and Almeda Patrick Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer was a Wake Forest College graduate, class of 1936, having attained his Juris Doctorate. He went on to become claim manager for Maryland Casualty Insurance Co., retiring in 1980 with 42 years of service. His membership included that with the Charlotte Managers Council, having served as their president. A decorated World War II veteran, Daniel served as an investigator and administrative specialist to the Provost Marshal's Office in the India-Burma Theater, achieving the rank of technical sergeant. He received the American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with a Bronze Service Star, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Daniel is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Florence Logan Harris Sawyer; his son, Charles Harris Sawyer and his wife Nina Elizabeth Smith Sawyer and grandson Daniel Lawrence Sawyer, all of Jefferson. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his son, Daniel Webster Sawyer Jr.; and four sisters, Hattie Mayo, Clara Ellison, Etta Summerlin and Almeda Ross. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Lisa Saunders officiating. The Sawyer family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Blue Room at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of one's choice. Harry & Bryant Co. is serving the family of Mr. Sawyer.

SWEENEY

Capt. John Richard Sweeney Sr., U.S. Navy, 85, a resident of 2740 Reynolds Drive, died Monday morning, July 2, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He was born in Keene, N.H., on Dec. 5, 1915, the son of Edward C. Sweeney and Olive Smith Sweeney. He was married in 1941 to Mary Frances Myers Sweeney of Winston-Salem, who survives him. He was a graduate of Keene High School in Keene, N.H.; the U.S. Naval Academy, where he earned his undergraduate degree with the class of 1938; and Georgetown University, where he received his LLB degree in 1946. He was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar. He was a career naval officer and aviator, having served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietname War when, before his retirement, he was in charge of carrier air strikes. He retired from the Navy in 1968 with the rank of captain. He was also a graduate of the Naval War College and received U.S. Naval jet transitional training in Kingsville, Texas; heavier-than-air training in Pensacola, Fla.; helicopter training in Pensacola; and employment of nuclear weapons training, NTC, in Norfolk, Va. His tours of duty included, USS Savannah, gunnery department; USS Santee, air-department assignments; USS Cape Esperance, air officer, commanding officer of Fighter Squadron 42; USS Lake Champ-lain, commander of Carrier Air Group Four in Korea; USS Forestal, chief of staff and aide, commander of Carrier Division Four; USS Okinawa, commanding officer; USS Tolovana, commanding officer; and the commander of Readiness Attack Air Wing 12 and Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Md. Capt. Sweeney was the recipient of several significant awards, Legion of Merit with Combat "V"; Air Medal with Combat "V"; Navy Commendation Ribbon; Presidential Unit Citation; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign (one star); Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (two stars); American Campaign; Korean Service; United Nation's Service; National Defense Service (one star); American Defense. After his naval career, Capt. Sweeney served as the director of the Aeronautics Commission of the state of New Hampshire for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988. For his accomplishments in the improvement of airports in New Hampshire, Capt. Sweeney was awarded the Federal Aviation Administrator Certificate of Commendation. Called "Honest John" by his Naval Academy classmates, Capt. Sweeney loyally served his country through three wars, flying combat missions off aircraft carriers and serving as a naval officer, and serving the cause of aviation in the state of New Hampshire. During his Navy career, Capt. Sweeney was in charge of the testing of the F-4 Phantom jet (the principal fighter jet bomber of the U.S. Navy) at Patuxent River, Md., and was the commanding officer of two future astronauts, Alan Shephard and Wally Sheraw, who after serving with Capt. Sweeney, began service to the space program. Capt. Sweeney also assisted in 1956 in the rescue effort of the passengers of the Andrea Doria. After his retirement as director of the New Hampshire Aeronautics Com-mission, he and his wife relocated to Winston-Salem. Capt. Sweeney was an avid, lifelong tennis player, after having been a member of the Naval Academy Tennis Team. He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va., and Forsyth Country Club. Capt. Sweeney was preceded in death by his brother, Edward C. Sweeney Jr. In addition to his wife, Nan Sweeney, Capt. Sweeney is survived by his two sisters, Margaret E. Sweeney and Dr. Christine M. Sweeney of Keene, N.H.; his four children, Mary Nan Sweeney Moser and her husband, Ken of Winston-Salem, Patricia Myers Foxwell and her husband, Steven of McLean, Va., Dr. John R. Sweeney Jr., Capt., USN Ret. of Suffolk, Va., and Martha Gaile Sweeney of Alexandria, Va.; and six grandchildren, Kelly Moser of Atlanta, Ga., Ashley Moser Veneziano and husband, Joseph of Valhalla, N.Y., John Kenneth Moser of Charlotte, John Christopher Sweeney of Suffolk, Va., Catherine Rachel Sweeney of Erie, Pa., and Richard Scott Sweeney of Suffolk, Va. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 4, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, followed by a military ceremony and burial at Arlington National cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Mary Nan and Kenneth A. Moser, 1931 Virginia Road, Winston-Salem, from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 3. MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Gladys Juanita Williams, 90, formerly of Cooleemee died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. The body is at Eaton Funeral Home pending completion of arrangements. The family will be at the home of her daughter, Ann Williams, 110 Needmore Road, Woodleaf.

ANDRADE

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Antonio Peter Andrade Jr., 49, of Milling Road passed away Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mr. Andrade was born Sept. 21, 1951, in New York City to Antonio P. Andrade Sr. and the late Altagragcia Garcia Andrade; and is preceded in death by a stepson, Brian Andrade. He worked for Crown Wood as a boiler operator and attended Hardison United Methodist Church. Survivors include his loving wife, Jill Taylor Andrade; a daughter, Erica M. Andrade of Mocksville; two sons, Drew A. and Dylan J. Andrade of Mocksville; and a stepson, Tommy Andrade of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Hardison United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Marshall officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. ARRINGTON

WESTFIELD -Mr. Phillip Ray Arrington, 56, the husband of Alice Bledsoe Arrington, of 4309 Brown Mountain Road passed away June 28, 2001, at his home. Phillip will be greatly missed by friends and family. He was a beloved member of the community and touched many lives with his unconditional kindness. He was born July 16, 1944, in Surry County to Ray Reece and Amanda Josephine Cook Arrington. Mr. Arrington served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam conflict, was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., was an avid fisherman and a member of Westfield Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Alice Faye Bledsoe Arrington of the home; two daughters and son-in-law, Phyllis Arrington of San Mateo, Calif., and Angela and Michael Marshall of King; a grandson, Keelan Marshall; his mother, Josephine C. Arrington of West-field; a sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia and Freddy Smith of Pilot Mountain; a brother and sister-in-law, Mickey and Betty Arrington of Pilot Mountain; six nephews, Scott Arrington, Ricky Arrington, Jonathan Hill, Clark Bledsoe, Justin Bledsoe and Dale Bledsoe; and seven nieces, Amanda Santolla, Dedra Poindexter, Lisa Carey, Tammy Culler, Tina Bledsoe, Debbie Bledsoe and Emily Walker. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray Reece Arrington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Westfield Baptist Church. BITTING

Mr. James Henry Bitting, 84, of 1228-A Foster St., passed away Tuesday morning, June 26, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Bitting, known as "Pete" to some and as "Bubba" to others, was a native of Winston-Salem and was of the Holiness faith. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 39 years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. Bud and Cora Bitting; two sisters, Rosetta Chavis and Lillie Mae Anderson; and his wife, Mae Frances Bitting. He leaves to cherish his memory a son, James Lowery of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Patricia Martin of Baltimore, Md., and Gilbertine Smith of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Lucinda Watlington, Cora Lee White, Gracie (Samuel) Stimpson, and Carrie Ellis, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Robert Bitting of Philadelphia, Pa., and Jesse Bitting of Tampa, Fla.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grand children; a devoted friend, Ester Bowell; and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home, 727 N. Patterson Ave., Winston-Salem. The Rev. ADVANCE - Mr. James "Jim" William Boles Jr., 71, died unexpectedly Wednesday, June 27, 2001, the at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. He was born April 19, 1930, in Davidson County to James William Boles Sr. and Helen Kimel Boles. Mr. Boles grew up in the Freidburg community and resided in Garden City, S.C., for 25 years until his retirement in 1999. Throughout Jim's life he enjoyed being surrounded by his family and friends. He was involved as a volunteer fireman, coached his sons and other youth in various little-league sports and was a former member of the Moravian band. Surviving are his wife, Wenoka Paris Boles of the home; a daughter, Debbie B. Lentz and husband Eddie of Clemmons; two sons, Bill Boles and wife Ann of Clemmons and Mark Boles and wife Paige of Denver, N.C.; five grandchildren, Jimmy and Billy Lentz and Elizabeth, Caroline and Peyton Boles; a brother, Donald R. Boles and wife Nancy of Advance; a sister, Mattie Gibson and husband Wayne of Monroe; and his faithful pets. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel, conducted by the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton and the Rev. Dr. Henry May. Mr. Harvey Harold East Jr., 73, of Winston-Salem passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. East was born in Forsyth County on May 22, 1928, to Harvey Harold Sr. and Ruth Lancaster East. Mr. East attended New Hope Baptist Church for many years, was a member of Salem Masonic Lodge and was a 32nd-degree Mason. He was retired from AT&T with many years of service. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Monteze Lentz and husband Allen; a brother, John W. East and wife Gay; a nephew, David W. East and wife Cindy; a great-nephew, Joseph W. East; an aunt, Mrs. Kathryn Hendrix, all of Winston Salem; a host of loving cousins; and a most caring friend, Jerry Cardwell of King. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, June 29, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. B.A. Carroll officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park.

HAYDEN

Mr. Forrest S. Hayden, 90, of Winston-Salem died June 26, 2001. He was the husband of Doris Fields Hayden; the father of Faith Foster, Joyce Smith, Sally Muskovin and Stan Hayden; the grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and a brother of Alice Zahnizer. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gerry Free Methodist Church, Gerry, N.Y.

HEAD

KELLER, Texas - Mr. Robert Daniel Head, 71, passed away Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at an Irving hospital. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 23, at Bluebonnet Hills Funeral Home. Burial was at Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. Bob was born Sept. 9, 1929, in Guilford County. He moved to Texas in 1950 where he remained. He served in the U.S. Air Force for four years and graduated from North Texas State University in 1959 with a BBA in accounting. Bob was an accountant and tax adviser for Mobil Oil Corp. for 31 years, retiring in 1990. He was preceded in death by a sister, Vera Thomas of Winston-Salem. Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Jane Head; a son and daughter-in-law, Dan and Bobbie Sue Head; daughters and a son-in-law Lisa Head and Sheri and John Speed; a grandson, Van Speed; grand-daughters Logan and Lauren Head; brothers Hubert Head of Winston-Salem and Norman Head of Roanoke, Texas; sisters Eva Bowman, Louise Sprinkle, Gladys Hine, Thelma Head of Oceanside, Calif., Alma Howell, Frances Head and Laura Head of Winston-Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Keller building fund.

HOLSTON

LEXINGTON - Mr. Raymond Alexander Holston Jr., 73, of Holston Road passed away June 27, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 31, 1927, in Forsyth County, a son of Raymond A. Holston Sr. and Fannie Lee Smith Holston. He attended Davis-Towsend School in Davidson County, served in the U.S. Army as a firefighter during the Korean conflict and was honorably discharged June 30, 1961. He retired from R.J. Reynolds To-bacco Co. in Winston-Salem with 35 years of service. Mr. Holston was a member of Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. He served as an usher for more than 35 years. He enjoyed travel, being outdoors and was an avid gardener. Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Eleanor Parrish Holston of the home; a son, David A. Holston of Lexington; a sister, Jean Holston Lynn and her husband Jack of Welcome; a brother, John R. Holston of Roseboro; and a large number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Home Moravian Church by Dr. Gerald Harris and the Rev. Scott Venable. Burial will be in God's Acre in the Moravian Graveyard in Old Salem. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be directed to the Book of Remembrance, Home Moravian Church, Drawer J, Salem Station, Winston-Salem, NC 27108.

JIMENEZ

DOBSON - Mr. Jose Angel Jimenez, 64, died unexpectedly Monday, June 25, 2001. He was born in San Antonio, Texas, on Jan. 27, 1937, to the late Estanislao Jimenez Sr. and Ildefonsa Ontiveros. He was a retired farmer and owner/operator of Lucky Joe's in Dobson. He was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church in Mount Airy. Surviving are his wife, Rosa Maria Alvarado Jimenez of the home; four daughters, Josefina Munoz of Mount Airy, Leticia Ann Arvizu and Rosa Maria Cabrera of Dobson and Angelica Tyler Jo Jimenez of the home; five sons, Ricardo C. Jimenez of Texas, Lewis C. Jimenez of Florida, Vicente C. Jimenez of Charlotte, Jose Alberto Alvarado of California, Jesus C. Jimenez of the home; 11 grandchildren; a step-child; three great-grandchildren; his mother of Texas; six sisters, Jovita Angulo, Juanita Urziales, Maria Luz, Cruz Garcia, Anna Zuniga, Cruz Conterea, all of Texas; a brother, Estanislado Jimenez Jr. of Texas; a sister-in-law, Candelaria Bustamante of Dobson; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, Jose was preceded in death by two brothers, Felipe Jimenez, and Soledad Jimenez; and a sister, Ulalia Batia. His body will be taken to the Holy Angels Catholic Church Sanctuary in Mount Airy where the wake will start at 7 p.m. Friday and continue through the night. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Angels Catholic Parish Hall in Mount Airy. Burial will be in the Fairview Baptist Church cemetery near Dobson. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made in his memory to the Holy Angels Catholic Church, 1208 N. Main St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson is serving the Jimenez family.

LEWIS

Mrs. Opal Upchurch Lewis, 88, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Lewis was born in Carroll County, Va., on April 19, 1913, to H. Floyd and Clara Stewart Upchurch. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 32 years of service. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Myrtle Coulter, Ethel Poe and Gladys Upchurch, and her brother, Burris Upchurch. She is survived by a sister, Lessie Upchurch of the Hospice Home; a sister-in-law, Imogene Upchurch of Winston-Salem; three nephews, Tony Upchurch and wife Loretta of Winston-Salem, Leon Poe and wife Betty of Winston-Salem and Odell Poe and wife MaryAnn of Rural Hall; two nieces, Marilyn U. Yates and husband Michael of Winston-Salem and Clara U. Lazenby and husband Sonny, of King; and a niece-in-law, Shirley Upchurch. The family respectfully requests that family visitation be at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home or from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Chestnut Grove Primitive Baptist Church in Lambsburg, Va., with Elder Arwood Edwards officiating. MILES

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Nathaniel Taylor Miles Sr., 87, of 4620 Pine Hall Road, affectionately known as "Pete," passed away Tuesday, June 26, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, after a brief period of illness. He was born Feb. 3, 1914, in Walkertown to the late Joe and Mary Taylor Miles. He attended the public schools of Walkertown. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 42 years of service. He was a faithful member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church, serving as a past chairman and treasurer of the deacon board. He was also a member of the Board of Christian Education. He was a lifetime member of Prince Hall Masons, Bivouac Lodge No. 503 in Winston-Salem. He was also a member of the Winston Lake Retired Men's Club. Seven brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of more than 60 years, Willie Deborah Fuller Miles; four sons, Nathaniel Jr. (Ennis), James (Ellen), Vernell (Vicki) and John Frank (Olyvia); a daughter, Jacquelyn E. Miles; a grand-daughter whom he raised, Arnita M. Miles; 13 other grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Ernest Miles (Itasca) of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mollie M. Harris of Walkertown, and Eliza F. Gilbert of Washington, D.C.; a brother-in-law; and six sisters-in-law. Special thanks to Meals on Wheels, Stitch Center staff and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Homegoing services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Walkertown, with the Rev. I.L. Anthony officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.
