BALL

Dr. Marshall R. Ball, a distinguished radiologist on the faculty of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, died July 1, 2001, after a lengthy illness. He was 58. Dr. Ball was responsible for bringing the first computed tomography device (catscanner) to the School of Medicine and Baptist Hospital. The electromagnetic imagery scanner was a revolutionary diagnostic device when it was delivered to the hospital in 1975. It was the first catscanner to be installed at any institution in North Carolina. The catscanner is now used routinely around the world to photograph parts of the body. At the time, however, Dr. Ball traveled to England, Germany and parts of the United States to determine its usefulness to the medical community in Winston-Salem. Dr. Ball used the catscanner to diagnose illnesses related to the brain. For more than 20 years, he was chairman of the committee that selected radiology residents who studied at the School of Medicine. Dr. Douglas Maynard, chairman of the Radiology Department, said Dr. Ball was responsible for setting the high standard of medical students who were admitted to the advanced study of radiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Ball retired from his teaching and clinical duties in 1990 after suffering a debilitating stroke. Dr. Ball was valedictorian of the 1960 graduating class of New Bern High School. He won an Angier B. Duke Scholarship to attend Duke University and, after three years of undergraduate work, was admitted to Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He was tapped in his junior year of medical school to membership in Alpha Omega Alpha, the honorary medical fraternity. Having grown up in New Bern at the confluence of the Neuse and Trent rivers and close to the Atlantic Ocean, Dr. Ball loved the water and all of the activities related to it - fishing, crabbing, clamming and sailing. For a number of years, he maintained a second residence at Salter Path. During one period between his advanced studies, Dr. Ball, with the help of his brother-in-law, Samuel V. Long, now of Rice, Va., built a sailboat. Although he always excelled academically, his boat-building efforts were a flop. After almost a year of work on the sailboat in his garage in New Bern, the sailboat was christened the Phaedra and the day of the launch was set in June 1964. Dr. Ball and a lifelong friend, James W. Lewis, now of Washington, D.C., launched the Phaedra in the Trent River only to sink on the maiden voyage. Its passengers, Drs. Ball and Lewis, were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his graduation from medical school, Dr. Ball worked as an intern at Greenville General Hospital in Greenville, S.C., and then served in the U.S. Army in Richmond, Va., from 1969 to 1971. He was the chief medical examiner at the Army Induction Center in Richmond. He subsequently returned to the medical school where he did a three-year residency in radiology, and a one-year fellowship in neuroradiology. He then joined the faculty. Dr. Ball is survived by his wife Mrs. Laura Branch Ball of 715 Oaklawn Avenue in Winston-Salem; a son, Jonathan M. Ball of Cary; two daughters, Katherine B. Ball of Raleigh, and Elizabeth N. Ball of Chapel Hill; and a sister, Mrs. Saundra B. Long of Rice, Va. He was predeceased by his parents Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Ball of New Bern; and a brother, Jerry W. Ball of Miami Fla. A memorial service will be conducted at noon July 3 in the Davis Chapel at Baptist Hospital. Family will receive friends after the service. Contributions may be mailed to the Dr. Marshall R. Ball Scholarship Fund, Wake Forest University Medical School, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
