HAMMOND

WALNUT COVE - The Rev. Frederick C. Hammond, 86, made his transition into eternal life on Thursday, June 28, 2001. He was born on Aug. 14, 1914, in Manitoba, Canada, to the late Rev. Stephen R. Hammond and Mrs. Hattie W. Reid Hammond. He was an Episcopal priest for 55 years and served 21 years in Stokes County, having served Christ Church in Walnut Cove, St. Elizabeth's Church in King and other churches in the area as a supply priest. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Calef Hammond of the home; four sons, Stephen R. Hammond and wife Cathy, Michael Hammond and wife Rita, both of California, W. Weston Hammond of Spain, and John C. Hammond and wife Lisa of Washington; siblings, the Rt. Rev. H. Reginald Hammond of California, the Rev. Murray Hammond of California, a sister, Helen Biggers of Washington; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer Hammond, Michelle Hammond, Sage Hammond, Caleb Hammond, Clay Hammond, Galen Hammond, Jesse Hammond, Jeremiah Hammond, Bob Hammond, Megan Hammond; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem. The Rt. Rev. Michael Curry, the Rev. Howard Backus and the Rev. Sealy Cross will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Christ Church, P.O. Box 476, Walnut Cove, NC 27052; St. Elizabeth's Church, P.O. Box 2153, King, NC 27021 or to a charity of choice. The family will greet friends after the service at the church. Arrangements are being handled by Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove.

HANSEL

Mrs. Eva Combs Hansel, 84, of 100 S. Spruce St. died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 14, 1916, in Sparta to Roby and Lettie Caudill Combs. Mrs. Hansel attended Calvary Mor-avian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Hansel. Survivors include a daughter, Edith Perry of Jacksonville, Fla.; a son, Robert Law Jr. and wife Kim of Morriston, Fla.; seven grand-children; and five great-grand-children. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thurs-day at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Don Anderson. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon until time for the service.

HOLDEN

Late in the afternoon of June 26, 2001, our Lord and Savior called home Margrat J. Holden. She was the dear sister of Ruby (Chester) Keaton of Southfield, Mich. and William Johnson of Onemo, Va.; the aunt of Charles G. Mabry and Mary Addison of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces and nephews, Robert Reins of Ronks, Pa., Betty Barksdale of Atlanta, Ga. and Milinda Harris of Virginia Beach, Va.

JOYNER

Mrs. Sarah Eunice Doub Joyner, 79, formerly of 2139 Olivet Church Road, died Sunday afternoon at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. In recent years Mrs. Joyner had been a resident of the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was born Sept. 10, 1921, in Winston-Salem to Ira E. Doub and Sellie Sink Doub. She dearly loved her family and devoted much of her life to them. Mrs. Joyner had worked at the Moravian Cookie Shop. She was an avid gardener and was a longtime member of Lewisville United Methodist Church and was a member of the United Methodist Women. Preceding her in death was her husband, Walter Ray Joyner, in 1999. Surviving are her five daughters, Wanda Alexander and husband Archie of Winston-Salem, Frances Gough and husband Tony of Lewisville, Dorcas Garretson and husband Walter of Winston-Salem, Rhonda Joyner of Pfafftown and Karen Hayes and husband Joseph of Advance; her two sons, Travis Joyner and wife Sheree of Lewisville and Gene Joyner and wife Susan of Pfafftown; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Treva Robbins of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 4, at Lewisville United Methodist Church conducted by the Rev. Donald W. Routh, the Rev. Ronnie Comer and the Rev. Tom Albert. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Lewisville United Methodist Church, 6290 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC 27023; Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. MILLER

JEFFERSON - Mr. Tom Miller, 92, died Monday, July 2, 2001, at the Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Miller was born June 9, 1909, in Ashe County to Calvin and Alice Powers Miller. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, at the Midway Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Me-morial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2001, at Badger Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Ashe Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Fund, 200 Hospital Lane, Jefferson, NC 28640. Mr. Miller is survived by a son, the Rev. Jack Miller; daughters Patsy Beaver of Winston-Salem and Alice Spach of Lexington; a brother, Carl Miller of Kannapolis; eight grand-children; 12 great-grand-children; and a great-great-grandchild. MOSLEY

RALEIGH - Elizabeth Eaton Rouse Mosley, 37, of 111 E. Aycock St. died Monday. Ms. Mosley was born July 19, 1963, in Charlotte to Frank A. Rouse and the late Faye Euline Eaton. She was a practicing attorney in Raleigh. Ms. Mosley is survived by her father, Frank A. Rouse and wife Jane; a brother, Franklin A. Rouse Jr.; and a sister, Mary Catherine Rouse, all of Morehead City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Episcopal Church. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wake County SPCA, 219B Garner Business Court, Garner, NC 27529-4067. PORTER

Mr. John Louis Porter Sr., 73, of 4794 Leinbach Drive died at home Tuesday morning after a period of serious illness. He was born Oct. 1, 1927, in Durham County to Seth and Tiny Porter. He received a bachelor's degree in 1953 and a master's degree in 1957 from UNC Chapel Hill. He served in the U.S. Army 1954-56 in the Signal Corps, taught high-school chemistry and physics in Kings Mountain, Riverside military Academy in Gainesville, Ga., and Southern Pines. He was employed with Western Electric as a senior training engineer and retired from AT&T after 28 years of service. Mr. Porter was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and Sunday-school teacher for many years. He was a member of the Old Town Lions Club for 25 years and served as an officer at the local and district levels. He organized the first "Beep Ball" program in Forsyth County (a form of baseball for the blind). He was awarded "Citizen of the Year" by WGHP-TV in 1978. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Cornelia Jane McGirt Porter of the home; three sons, John L. Porter Jr. of Winston-Salem, Charles O. Porter of Casbaic, Calif., and Chris A. Porter and his wife Betsy of King; two grandchildren, Kate and Elizabeth Porter of King; and three sisters, Alma Grimsley of Wake Forest, Kathleen Mayse of Chapel Hill and Shirley Spalding of Durham. A private graveside service will be held Friday morning at Forsyth Memorial Park followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church, conducted by the Rev. Alan Wright and the Rev. Richard Little. The family will remain at the church to receive friends after the service. Mr. Porter will lie in state at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel after noon on Wednesday and friends may pay their respects there until 9 a.m. Friday. SCOTT

Deacon Hilton Scott, 65, known to family and friends as "Scott," of 1011 Charles St. passed away Saturday, June 30, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. He was a native of Marietta in Robeson County and had lived in Winston-Salem for nearly all of his life. He was a member of the Beulah Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, on the senior choir, the trustee board, the male chorus, the Sunday school, the Soul Winning Evangelism Team and was a van driver. He was a retired employee of the Thomasville Furniture Co. and was preceded in passing by a son, Hilton Lee Scott. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Adams Scott of the home; five daughters, Pat Jenkins (Daniel), Betty Adams, Angela Adams, Jacqueline Adams, all of Winston-Salem, and Jennifer Jordan (Edward) of Greensboro; a son, Donald McKinney of Lexington; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Bea-trice Ford of Winston-Salem and Leola Oates of Fairmont; two brothers, Billy Ray Scott of Richmond, Va., and Pendleton Scott of Fairmont; a special nephew, the Rev. Bruce Lindsay Ford of Winston-Salem; and many other nephews, nieces, relatives, and dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 6, 2001, at Beulah Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bernard Adams officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 5, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home. SMITH

Mrs. Jessie Adams Smith, 83, of 1845 S. Hawthorne Road died Tuesday morning at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Forsyth County to Robert Nelson and Sara Elizabeth Gordon Adams. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Bethesda Moravian Church. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Kathleen Mark-ward, Mrs. Virginia A. Smith and Mrs. Mary Frances Bodford and a brother-in-law, William Edward Bodford, all of Winston-Salem. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at the Moravian Graveyard by the Rev. Keith White. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thurs-day at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and requests that memorials be made to Bethesda Moravian Church.

SWEENEY

Capt. John Richard Sweeney Sr., U.S. Navy, 85, a resident of 2740 Reynolds Drive, died Monday morning, July 2, 2001, at North Carolina Baptist Hospital. He was born in Keene, N.H., on Dec. 5, 1915, the son of Edward C. Sweeney and Olive Smith Sweeney. He was married in 1941 to Mary Frances Myers Sweeney of Winston-Salem, who survives him. He was a graduate of Keene High School in Keene, N.H.; the U.S. Naval Academy, where he earned his undergraduate degree with the class of 1938; and Georgetown University, where he received his LLB degree in 1946. He was admitted to the District of Columbia Bar. He was a career naval officer and aviator, having served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietname War when, before his retirement, he was in charge of carrier air strikes. He retired from the Navy in 1968 with the rank of captain. He was also a graduate of the Naval War College and received U.S. Naval jet transitional training in Kingsville, Texas; heavier-than-air training in Pensacola, Fla.; helicopter training in Pensacola; and employment of nuclear weapons training, NTC, in Norfolk, Va. His tours of duty included, USS Savannah, gunnery department; USS Santee, air-department assignments; USS Cape Esperance, air officer, commanding officer of Fighter Squadron 42; USS Lake Champ-lain, commander of Carrier Air Group Four in Korea; USS Forestal, chief of staff and aide, commander of Carrier Division Four; USS Okinawa, commanding officer; USS Tolovana, com-manding officer; and the commander of Readiness Attack Air Wing 12 and Naval Air Test Center in Patuxent River, Md. Capt. Sweeney was the recipient of several significant awards, Legion of Merit with Combat "V"; Air Medal with Combat "V"; Navy Commendation Ribbon; Presi-dential Unit Citation; European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign (one star); Asiatic-Pacific Cam-paign Medal (two stars); American Campaign; Korean Service; United Nation's Service; National Defense Service (one star); American Defense. After his naval career, Capt. Sweeney served as the director of the Aeronautics Commission of the state of New Hampshire for 20 years, from 1968 to 1988. For his accomplishments in the improvement of airports in New Hampshire, Capt. Sweeney was awarded the Federal Aviation Administrator Certificate of Commendation. Called "Honest John" by his Naval Academy classmates, Capt. Sweeney loyally served his country through three wars, flying combat missions off aircraft carriers and serving as a naval officer, and serving the cause of aviation in the state of New Hampshire. During his Navy career, Capt. Sweeney was in charge of the testing of the F-4 Phantom jet (the principal fighter jet bomber of the U.S. Navy) at Patuxent River, Md., and was the commanding officer of two future astronauts, Alan Shephard and Wally Schirra, who after serving with Capt. Sweeney, began service to the space program. Capt. Sweeney also assisted in 1956 in the rescue effort of the passengers of the Andrea Doria. After his retirement as director of the New Hampshire Aeronautics Com-mission, he and his wife relocated to Winston-Salem. Capt. Sweeney was an avid, lifelong tennis player, after having been a member of the Naval Academy Tennis Team. He was a member of the Army-Navy Country Club in Arlington, Va., and Forsyth Country Club. Capt. Sweeney was preceded in death by his brother, Edward C. Sweeney Jr. In addition to his wife, Nan Sweeney, Capt. Sweeney is survived by his two sisters, Margaret E. Sweeney and Dr. Christine M. Sweeney of Keene, N.H.; his four children, Mary Nan Sweeney Moser and her husband, Ken of Winston-Salem, Patricia Myers Foxwell and her husband, Steven of McLean, Va., Dr. John R. Sweeney Jr., Capt., USN Ret. of Suffolk, Va., and Martha Sweeney Welch of Alexandria, Va.; and six grandchildren, Kelly Moser of Atlanta, Ga., Ashley Moser Veneziano and husband, Joseph of Valhalla, N.Y., John Kenneth Moser of Charlotte, John Christopher Sweeney of Suffolk, Va., Catherine Rachel Sweeney of Erie, Pa., and Richard Scott Sweeney of Suffolk, Va. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 4, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, followed by a military ceremony and burial at Arlington National cemetery. TAYLOR

Mrs. Mary Mildred Shoaf Taylor, 91, of The Oaks at Forsyth, died Tuesday morning, July 3, 2001. Mrs. Taylor was born March 3, 1910, in Davidson County to William Lee and Fannie Giles Shoaf. She married Jesse Winstead Taylor Jr. on Aug. 4, 1928, and they made their home in Winston-Salem. Mildred was active in her community, always willing to help her family and friends. A caregiver, homemaker and grandmother, "Mama T." was a faithful member of Augsburg Lutheran Church. Her husband died in 1986. Also preceding her in death were a son, Alan Kent Taylor, in 1996; a sister, Wilma Shoaf Michael; and two brothers, Roy F. Shoaf and Floyd H. Shoaf. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Peggy R. Taylor of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Alan Kent Taylor Jr. (wife Arlene) of California; two granddaughters, Teresa T. Bodford (husband Terry) of Winston-Salem and Mary L. Taylor of Lewisville; and two great-granddaughters, Jennifer C. and Morgan L. Bodford. Visitation will be Thursday, July 5, 2001 at 10 a.m. followed by 11 a.m. funeral services at Hayworth Miller Chapel, Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem. Burial will be at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be made to the Augsburg Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 845 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

ANDERSON

Mrs. Doris Ingram Anderson of 635 W. Sixth St., Apt. 7Q, passed away Friday, July 6, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of illness. She was a native of Winston-Salem, where she resided most of her life. She was a graduate of Atkins High School and the Kate B. Reynolds School of Nursing. Mrs. Anderson was a faithful and active member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, where she served on many auxiliaries. She is survived by a brother, Fred (Barbara) Ingram of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Dallie M. Crosby of Newark, N.J., Helen (John) Brown of Palmer Park, Md., Annie M. Searcy of Inglewood, Calif. and Willie J. (Clarence) Simpson of Los Bonas, Calif.; two aunts, Kathleen Little and Willa Little, both of Wadesboro; a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends of Crystal Towers; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Second Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Stowe officiating. Inter-ment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Mary L. Banner, 2313 K. Court Ave., passed away Saturday, July 7, 2001, at Britt Haven of Forsyth. She was a native of Atlanta, Ga., and a retired employee of Rose's. Mrs. Banner was a member of Union Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Bart O., and Roger Banner, both of the home; three grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001 from Union Baptist Church, where the Rev. Dr. Sir Walter Mack Jr. will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cem-etery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the services from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. The remains may be viewed at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Chapel from 2:30 to 7:30 p.m. today. GREENSBORO - Mrs. Illis Tucker Boyles, 87, of 2004 Albatross St. died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday July 11, at Hanes-Lineberrry Vanstory Street Chapel. Interment will be at Westminster Gardens. She was a member of Tower Drive Baptist Church. Surviving are her sons, Don Boyles of Germanton and Nelson Boyles of Greensboro; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the funeral home.

CATHEY

Mr. Jerry Franklin Cathey, 70, formerly of the Manorhouse on Polo Road, died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Fulton County, Ga., to William Ebert and Sadie Gant Cathey. Mr. Cathey was of the Lutheran faith and served in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Cathey was retired from AT&T. Surviving are two daughters, Claudia Cathey Evans and husband Michael of Winston-Salem and Gerri C. Shank of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Michael Joe Evans II, Christopher M. Smith and Ashley and Kimberly (Rudy) Shank; a very special brother, Richard Grubbs of East Bend, a sister, Betty Newsome of Salisbury; a niece, Cathey Raymond Sale of Anderson, S.C.; three nephews, Greg Newsome and wife Donna of Raleigh, Bo Newsome and wife Gaye of Faith, N.C. and Mike Newsome of Charlotte; and a great-nephew, Spencer Newsome of Faith. A funeral service will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Deacon Joe Shumaker officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Manorhouse Retirement Centers Inc. Computer Fund, c/o Elissa M. Miss Mary Louise Flippin, 83, of 2818 Frank St. died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Oak Summit Nursing Center. She was born Sept. 8, 1916, in Forsyth County the daughter of David and Virginia Venable Flippin. She had worked with R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for several years. She was a member of Sprague Street Baptist Church. Surviving are a brother-in-law, Kenneth H. Shelton of 268 Robbins Road; a niece, Ms. Kathy S. Wooten of 311 Salisbury St. Unit 52, Kernersville; two nephews, Keith Shelton of Kernersville and Richard Laws of Wilkesboro; and several other nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Clint Branch and the Rev. Ottis Hurst. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 N. NC Highway 109, is in charge of arrangements.

GLENN

Mr. Curtis Lemont Glenn, 43, affectionately known to family and friends as "Frog," of 108 Inverness St., unexpectedly passed away Friday, July 6, 2001, at his residence. He was born April 4, 1958, in Winston-Salem. He was of the Baptist faith, and occasionally attended Freedom Baptist Church. He was a graduate of West Forsyth High School, Class of 1976, and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Curtis was a chef by profession, but a dedicated employee of the Russell Funeral Home. He is survived by his mother, Mattie Glenn of Winston-Salem; three sons, Sgt. Adrian Glenn (Lacreaca) of Fayetteville, and Alex Glenn and Aaryn Glenn, both of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Gaynell Cooper, Ethel Crockett, and Wanda Rhodes, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Greg Glenn of Orlando, Fla., Kenny Glenn of Winston-Salem, Gordon McRae Glenn of Fort Worth, Texas, and William Glenn of Albemarle; a very devoted friend, Constance Nelson; and many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, the Russell Funeral Home staff and family, and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery.
