GRIFFIN

UNION GROVE - Mrs. Mattie Lee Wishon Griffin, 73, died Sunday at Iredell Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Surry County born June 16, 1928. Mrs. Griffin was a homemaker and member of Zion Baptist Church. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister Zeola McCann. She was married to William Leroy Griffin, who preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1960. Surviving are three daughters, Mary Alice Hayes of Turnersburg, Sandra J. Goodin of Union Grove and Joyce C. Schultz of Pfafftown; a sister, Nola Mitchell of Hamptonville; five grand-children, Donna Church of Olin, Michael Hayes of Stony Point, Cindy Wood of Yadkinville, Jessica Cockerham of Pfafftown and Jason Goodin of Union Grove; and seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. Griffin was also a foster parent to 10 children. For those who prefer, memorials may be given to Zion Baptist Church cemetery Fund, Union Grove, NC 28689 or the Statesville Dialysis Center, 627 Signal Hill Drive Extension, Statesville, NC 28677. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) in the Westmoreland Chapel of Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home conducted by the Rev. Jeff Williamson. Interment will follow in the Zion Baptist Church cemetery in Union Grove. Condolences may be made to the family by e-mail at www.legacy.com. HOMIER

Elizabeth O'Shea Homier, 88, died July 6, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Homier was born Nov. 8, 1912, in New York City, to the late Marcella and Patrick O'Shea. She attended Smith College in Northampton, Mass. Mrs. Homier served as a registered nurse in the U.S. Navy during World War II. She retired from nursing to become a homemaker. She was also a volunteer for the Red Cross. She came out of retirement in 1968 and was instrumental in opening the pediatric wing of the Langdale Memorial Hospital in Langdale, Ala. Mrs. Homier was a member of St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Paul A. Homier; two children, Margo H. Cox and her husband, Robert M. of Winston-Salem, and Paul A. Homier Jr. and his wife Catherine of Lutz, Fla.; five grandchildren, Robert and Stephanie Cox, Tony, Ryan and Kelly Homier. A funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church. The family will receive friends, immediately after the service in the church activity center. Memorials may be made to Food for the Poor, 550 S.W. 12th Ave., Dept. 9662, Deerfield, FL 33442. Arrangements by Memorial Funeral Chapel.

HUFFMAN

Mrs. Minnie Lorena Davis Pharr Huffman, 85, wife of Buren Huffman of The Manorhouse, Polo Road, Winston-Salem, died Monday, July 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mountlawn Memorial Park with the ministers Claude Pharr, David Pharr, Brett Pharr and James Pharr officiating. Mrs. Huffman was born in Surry County, April 1, 1916, to Claude and Blanche Eidson Davis. She was a member of South Fork Church of Christ. Mrs. Huffman was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard N. Pharr; a daughter, Minnie Ruth Pharr Wellborn; and a granddaughter, Claudia Jo Pharr. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Huffman is survived by two sons, David Pharr of Rock Hill, S.C., and Claude Pharr of Winston-Salem; a sister, Ruth Edwards of Elkin; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday night. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to South Fork Church of Christ, 205 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

HUGHES

Mr. Kenneth Hughes, 44, of Winston-Salem died at his home Sunday, July 8, 2001. He was a member of Green Street United Methodist Church and he served in the U.S. Navy for three years. He was owner of T&H Renovation. Survivors include his wife, Tammy Gough Hughes, and a son, Joey Hughes of the home. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Memorial Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. JEFFERSON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Roscoe Jackson Jefferson Sr., 89, of 1781 Bryant Road, widower of Irene Mae Reynolds Jefferson, passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Walnut Cove Healthcare Center. Mr. Jefferson was born in Surry County Oct. 12, 1911, the son of the late Daniel and Mecie Bolen Jefferson. He was a retired tobacco farmer, a member of Ivy Green Baptist Church, and a member of Round Peak Masonic Lodge #616 AF & AM. Survivors include eight daughters and three sons-in-law, Pansy Pedigo of King, Mecie and James Williams and Sarah Redman, all of Kernersville, Barbara Evans of Walnut Cove, Shirley Jones and Gaynell Hawks, both of Mount Airy, and Doris and James Bullin and Josie and Sherman Widener, all of Dobson; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kermit Jefferson and Wayne and Pam Jefferson, all of Mount Airy and Roscoe Jefferson Jr. and Brenda Jefferson of Lewisville; 16 grandchildren; 23 great- grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Jefferson was preceded in death by a daughter, Debrah Lynn Jefferson; a son, Roy Jarvis Jefferson; two grandchildren; four brothers; and a sister. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dale Bass. Burial will follow in Ivy Green Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday night at the funeral home where his body will remain until the hour of the service.

LOCKABY

TRAPHILL - Mr. James Marion Lockaby Sr., 52, of Long Pine Lane passed away Sunday, July 8, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Lockaby was born Feb. 12, 1949, in Surry County to William Cameron and Grace Marion Baker Lockaby. Mr. Lockaby was retired from the Boonville Police Department. Survivors include his wife, Christine J. Lockaby of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Matthew James (Amy Johnson) Lockaby of Ronda; three daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn Christine Hardin of East Bend, Wendy Michelle (Terry) Triplett of Jonesville and Angela (William) Roberts of Jonesville; his mother, Grace Marion Baker Lockaby of Florida; a brother and sister-in-law, William Cameron (Daisy) Lockaby II of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Patricia Lockaby of Orlando, Fla.; and nine grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Johnny Casstevens. Burial will follow in the Lockaby family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday evening at the funeral home in Elkin.

MILLER

FORT MILL, S.C. - Hall Crews Miller Sr., 76, died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel, 727 E. More-head St., Charlotte, (704) 334-6421, with the Rev. Steve Wilson of the Little Church on the Lane Moravian Church officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn East cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. Mr. Miller was born Oct. 23, 1924, in Winston-Salem, a son of the late Paul Felix Miller and Florence Summers Crews Miller. He was a graduate of Gray High School in Winston-Salem and Wake Forest College at Wake Forest, and a member of Fappa Sigma Fraternity while at Wake Forest. Mr. Miller retired from the Du Pont Co. after 27 years of service as a chemist, and he later retired from the Pharr Yarns. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dawson Harris Miller, and a sister, Betty Miller Daly. Surviving are his wife, Joyce Mathews Miller of Fort Mill; children, Margaret Miller Nunez and husband, Max of Charlotte, Hall Crews Miller Jr. and wife, Lucinda, also of Charlotte, Paul Felix Miller II and wife, Debbie of Raleigh, and Ann Miller Calandro and husband, James of Waxhaw; stepchildren, Douglas M. Clark and wife, Patricia of Charlotte, Teresa C. Hensley and husband, Raleigh of Lancaster, S.C., and Sandra Lynn Clark and husband, Luther of Charlotte; grandchildren, Paul, Matthew and Nicolas Nunex, Jake, Mary, Lindsey, Johnny and Nancy Miller, Liann, Abrams, Jaime, Anthony and Jodi Calandro, Justin, Jennifer and Jordan Clark, Daniel and Christopher Hensley, and Matthew and Adam Clark; a sister, Jean Messick of Lewisville; a brother-in-law, Dr. R. REAVIS

GREENSBORO - Neva Jane Reavis died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill after a long-term illness. Miss Reavis was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Rhuama Reavis. She is survived by her only sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Clifton Campbell of Knoxville, Tenn.; two nephews, Scott and Douglas Campbell; a number of faithful friends; and her two loving and loyal English setters. At Miss Reavis' request, there will be no formal service or visitation. However, friends may contact her sister or friends through Neva's home. Memorials may be made to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of the Triad; the Humane Society of Guilford County; the American Liver Foundation; or the charity of your choice.

REEVES

Mrs. Rosemary Tesh Griffin Reeves, 71, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Feb. 21, 1930, in Forsyth County to the late Herbert Stanley and Mildred Yokley Tesh. Mrs. Reeves worked for Hanes Knitting for a number of years. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Beecher Griffin, in 1974; her second husband, Herman Reeves, in 1999; and a brother, Herbert Stanley Tesh Jr. Surviving are a son, Charles Beecher Griffin Jr. of Winston-Salem; a grand-daughter; two sisters, Monzelle Hilton and husband Sam of Winston-Salem and Patricia Williard and husband Richard of Winston-Salem; a brother, Charles Franklin Tesh of Wins-ton-Salem; a sister-in-law, Ruth B. Tesh of Huntersville; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oak-lawn Memorial Gardens by Mr. James Percival. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. RITTER

The Rev. Boyd Edward Ritter was born in Kingsport, Tenn., Dec. 19, 1932, to the late Boyd Edward and Emma Lucile Starnes Ritter. He graduated from Dobyns Bennett High School, where among other interests, he was the drum major for the band. He attended Emory and Henry College, and graduated from East Tennessee State University with a bachelor's degree. He also attained a Master of Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta, Ga. He was an ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church. He served churches in Chattanooga, Tenn., Augusta, Ga., Charlotte, and Winston-Salem. He married Constance Cecile Finch in June of 1961. The Ritters moved from Augusta to Charlotte, and then to Winston-Salem in 1965 where he served Centenary United Methodist Church until his death on Monday morning, July 9, 2001, after a long battle with cancer. At Centenary, he has served as youth minister, minister of Christian education, and director of Adult Ministries. The Rev. Ritter served as the chair of two national conferences of the Christian Educators Fellowship of the United Methodist Church; founder of the Western North Carolina Conference chapter of the Christian Educators Fellowship; and chair of the Southeastern Leisure/Recreation Workshop. In Winston-Salem, he served on the board of the AIDS Care Service and was a member of the Holly Haven Family Care Home Building Committee. He was also the principal speaker at the dedication of Holly Haven; was a member of Leadership Winston-Salem; and a longtime volunteer for the Vantage Championship Golf Tournament. The Rev. Ritter is survived by his wife of 40 years, Constance Cecile Finch Ritter (Connie); a daughter, Deborah Cecile Ritter Brancato and her husband Anthony John Brancato of Spring, Texas; a son, Charles Edward Ritter and his wife Jennifer Ann Thompson Ritter; and two grandsons, Thompson Edward Ritter and Charles Fitzgerald Ritter of Acworth, Ga. A memorial service will be held in Winston-Salem at Centenary United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 11, at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the AIDS Care Service, P.O. Box 21373, Winston-Salem, NC 27120 or Centenary United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 658, Winston-Salem, NC 27102. ROBINSON

MACON, Ga. - Mr. Riley Lee Robinson, 61, died Sunday at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Macon Memorial Park Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Macon Memorial Park. Mr. Robinson, the son of Vera Robinson and the late Homer L. Robinson, had been a resident of Macon for most of his life. He was retired from Inland Container Corp., was a member of Avondale Baptist Church and attended Victory Baptist Church. Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his son, Riley Lee Robinson Jr. Survivors include his daughter, Vera Marie Robinson of Winston-Salem; his mother, Vera Marie Robinson of Macon; brothers James Henry Robinson of New Orleans, La., and Homer Lee Robinson Jr. of Macon; sisters Lenora Ann Selph of Bonaire, Nuby R. Robinson of Columbus, Ga., and Judy Ann Robinson of Macon; a half sister, Clara Lint of Nampa, Idaho; and grandchildren Justin, Lucas and Adam Robinson. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

SHEEK

Mrs. Bertha Flinchum Sheek, 96, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 8, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home in Kernersville. She was born May 20, 1905, in Winston-Salem to Samuel Adam and Martha Cooper Flinchum. Mrs. Sheek was a charter member of Memorial United Church of Christ. She was retired from P.H. Hanes Knitting Co. Preceding Mrs. Sheek in death was her husband, Mr. Robert William Sheek Sr. Survivors include sons Robert W. Sheek Jr. and wife Carolyn of Greensboro and Thomas S. Sheek and wife Clara of Boiling Springs, S.C.; grandchildren Pam S. Willis (John) of Kernersville, Robin Sheek of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Martha S. Moore (Jerry) of Holly Springs, Lynn S. Palmer of Gastonia, Debbie S. Morris (Richard) of Westerly, R.I., Bill Sheek of Bozrah, Conn. and Jennifer S. Rosa and husband Larry of Johnston, R.I.; eight great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. Her sister, Minnie Ford, lives in Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, 2001, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Memorial United Church of Christ at 236 W. STINSON

Mr. Whitfield Stinson of Crystal Towers, 625 W. Sixth St., passed away Friday night as a result of a fall. He was born in Winston-Salem where he lived all of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. George Stinson Sr. and Mrs. Mary Beyers Stinson; two sisters, Rachel Lee Stinson and Elizabeth Stinson; and two brothers, Herbert Stinson and James Stinson. Surviving are three sisters, Betty S. Foster and Evelyn S. Code of Winston-Salem and Mary Ann S. Boone of Chicago, Ill.; three brothers, George Stinson Jr., Robert Stinson and Lemuel Stinson, all of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The body is at Johnson-Howard-Robinson Home of Memory pending completion of burial arrange-ments. Johnson-Howard-Robin-son Home of Memory is in charge of all services and arrangements.

TATUM

MADISON - Mr. Harry Marshall Tatum, 69, of 915-A Fern St. died July 8, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at Perry-Spencer Funeral Home Chapel in Madison. Burial will be in Withers Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Belews Creek. He was a native of Stokes County and a retired employee of Burlington Indus-tries. He is survived by a son, Harry T. Tatum of Columbus, Ga.; a daughter, Debra Calloway of Walnut Cove; a brother, Samuel "George" Tatum of Wal-nut Cove; three sisters, Olivia T. Fields of Winston-Salem, Emma L. Moore and Ola Bell Hairston, both of Walnut Cove; and five grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times may be con-tacted at 819 Highway 65 E., Walnut Cove. (Perry-Spencer)

WESTERBERG

KING - Mr. Albert William Westerberg, 79, of Scenic Drive, died unexpectedly while vacationing in Pennsylvania on Sunday, July 8, 2001. He was born June 26, 1922 in Darby, Pa., to Albert O. and Edna Westerberg. He is preceded in death by his wife Joan P. of 53 years. Albert served in the U.S. Airforce and was a veteran of World War II. He retired as an acting plant manager from Westinghouse after 42 years of service. He is survived by his two sons, Robert William Westerberg and wife Liz of Pfafftown, and Kenneth Albert Westerberg and wife Patty of Rural Hall; four grandchildren, Bobby Westerberg and wife Dianna of Winston-Salem, Stacey Hamilton and husband Charlie of Pfafftown, Michael Westerberg of Winston-Salem, Joshua Terpstra and wife Allyson of Mebane; a sister Elise Honer and husband Charlie of Pennsylvania; and five great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be conducted Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at 6 p.m. in the Good Shepherd Catholic Church in King with father Larry Hunt officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407, in memory of Al's beloved wife Joan Westerberg. "Al has gone home to be at peace once again with Joan, the love of his life."

WILLIAMS

HIGH POINT - Mr. Bill W. Williams, 74, a resident of Rotary Drive died Saturday, July 7, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital following an illness. Bill was born in Moore County July 1, 1927, the son of Charles and Tressie Bailey Williams. He grew up in High Point and graduated from High Point High School in 1945 and from Elon College in 1950. Bill began a long-spanning newspaper career in the mid-40s with the High Point Enterprise where he worked as a reporter and sports writer. He then worked for newspapers in Gastonia and Lumberton before retiring from the Winston-Salem Journal after 30 years as a reporter, editor and special writer. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was an unaffiliated Baptist moderate. He was also president of the Winston-Salem Shrine Club and was a Mason. On April 28, 1987, he married Betty Rousey who survives of the home. Surviving in addition to his wife of the home are two daughters, Mickey Johnson and her husband Rob of Winston-Salem and Mary Ann Johnson and her husband Kyle of Clemmons; a stepdaughter, Sandy Markham of High Point; two stepsons, Dale Lackey and David Lackey of High Point; a sister, Jacquelyn Millaway of Boone; four grandchildren, Drew, Dale, Abbey and Meredith Johnson, all of Clemmons; and four stepgrandchildren, Kevin and Kathryn Markham of High Point and Ray and Felicia Lackey of Seagrove. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Harold C. Davis Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Jim Summey. Burial with military honors conducted by the Randolph County Honor Guard will be in Floral Garden Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and all other times at the home. The family requests memorials be made to English Road Baptist Church or to a charity of one's choice.

WISHON

Mr. Dalton Davis Wishon, 77, of 4731 Seminole Court died Thursday, July 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 15, 1923, in Forsyth County to Fonzo James and Mary Jane Byrd Wishon. Mr. Wishon was retired from the U.S. Army and the City of Winston-Salem. He was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Pamela Ervin of Fayetteville; and a son, Dalton Davis Wishon II of San Francisco. Survivors include his wife, Vickie Kates Davis Wishon of the home; a daughter, Nancy White and husband Paul of Salisbury; three sons, Timothy Wishon and wife Gayle of Charlotte and Steve Wishon and Kenneth Davis, both of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Also surviving are a special niece, Joyce Lynn Williams; a sister, Mrs. Zelpha Lee Joyner of Winston-Salem; and a special caregiver, Phyllis Walker. Mr. Wishon's body was an anatomical gift to Bowman Gray School of Medicine. A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Center Grove Baptist Church by Dr. Jim Reimer, the Rev. Richard Hicks and the Rev. Glenn Davis. The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. Memorials may be made to Center Grove Baptist Church, Building Fund, 8200 Center Grove Church Road, Clemmons.
