DAVIS

Mrs. Wyliar Owen Hall Davis, 104, of Springwood Care Center of Forsyth County, Winston-Salem, formerly a resident of Hutton Street, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at her home. She was born July 25, 1897, in Stokes County to the late Anthony Dee and Mary Gordon Owen. Mrs. Davis was a member of Green Street United Methodist Church and volun-teered with the American Red Cross in Winston-Salem for 25 years. Mrs. Davis is survived by two sisters, Mary R. Moore of Pilot Mountain and Vora Bennett of Virginia Beach, Va.; and 12 nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her first husband, Jesse Hall; her second husband, Alex Davis; a brother, Codell Owen; and a sister, Doris Kiger. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park, Winston-Salem, conducted by the Rev. Kelly Carpenter. The family will receive friends at the graveside immediately after the service. The family is being served by Howell Funeral Service in Pilot Mountain. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the American Red Cross, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

ENNELS

BIRDSBORO, Pa. - Doretha A. Ennels, 57, of 226 S. Chestnut St. #107, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at 12:30 p.m. of natural causes at St. Joseph's Hospital where she had been a patient for one month. She was born in Winston-Salem the stepdaughter of the late Oscar Lewis and daughter of the late Catherine (Adams) Lewis. She was the daughter of William Winstead of Reading, Pa., and the wife of Williams Ennels Jr. of Reading. She was a member of Mount Zion Church of God in Christ, Reading. In addition to her husband and father, she is survived by two daughters, Jacqueline (Adams) Lipscomb of Reading and Sonetta Adams of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; five brothers, Oscar Lewis Jr. and Donald R. Lewis both of Reading and James M., Robert L., and Carl D. Lewis all, of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Eleanor (Lewis) Gibson of Winston-Salem. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Berks County Memorial Gardens, Fleetwood, Maidencreek Twp., Pa. Stokes Stitt Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

HOWARD

DURHAM - Mr. Billy "Bill" Jackson Howard, 59, of 4720 Heritage Drive, died Wednesday evening at Durham Regional Hospital. Mr. Howard was born in Durham, the son of Ada Rose Howard of Durham and the late Henry Jackson Howard. He was retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation. Mr. Howard was a member of First Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, Mr. Howard is survived by his wife, Kyle Howard; two daughters, Kimberly H. McKeel and husband Chris of Durham and Amy H. Outlaw and husband Jeff of Bahama; two sisters, Rosemary Doty and husband Coy of Clemmons and Ginny Spell and husband Barry of Rougemont; and five grandchildren, Brice McKeel, Kyle McKeel and Zachary McKeel, all of Durham, and Jackson Outlaw and Sydney Outlaw, both of Bahama. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham, with Dr. Andrew M. Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Child Evangelism Fellowship, P.O. Box 1288, Durham, NC 27702.

JAMES

KING - Mr. William Monroe James Jr., 75, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. James was born July 9, 1926, in Winston-Salem to William Monroe James Sr. and Bessie Brown James. He was a retired bookkeeper and was a renowned military historian. Mr. James was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are a son, William Monroe James and wife Nancy of Hamptonville; three grandchildren, Donna Marie James, Kayla Renee James and Sara Nicole Younts; a sister, Vera Hall and husband Bill of Winston-Salem; a brother, Lenue James and wife Lola of Troy; three nieces, Anna Hollander and husband Steve of Atlanta, Ga., Martha Brown and husband Gregory of Norfolk, Va. and Caroline Hall of Charlotte; and two nephews, Chris James of Troy and Andy James and wife Mary of Raleigh. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday July 28, at Gentry Family Funeral Home by the Rev. Freddie Braswell. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 27, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

JOLLY

KING - Mr. Carl Toliver Jolly, 89, of Village Care of King died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem after a brief illness. Mr. Jolly was born in Iredell County on June 14, 1912, the son of the late William Arthur and Ada Swaim Jolly. Mr. Jolly was of the Baptist faith. He was a woodworking craftsman and had skillfully repaired numerous antiques. He also enjoyed creative writing, penning numerous writings and poetry. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Mrs. Margie Royal Jolly of King; four daughters, Sarah Kiger and husband Lester of Winston-Salem, Gayle Holloway of Elkin, Phyllis Swaim and husband Jackie and Mary Smith and husband Bob, all of King; two sons, Issiac C. Jolly and wife Carol of Salisbury and Tommy Jolly of Jefferson; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Ruth Lee Jolly of Harmony. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Woodland cemetery in Winston-Salem by Brother Don Collins. The Jolly family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall.

KING

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Harold James "Doub" King, 68, died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center. Mr. King was born April 11, 1933, in Yadkin County to Miles and Nelia Porter King. He was a retired tobacco farmer and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. Mr. King was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Miles King Jr., Leo King, Isom King and Dewey King; and two half sisters, Mary Nelson and Lucy Tucker. Surviving are two daughters, Lisa (Billy) Corder of Elkin and Gail (Benny) Swaim of Jonesville; a son, Junior Beck of High Point; a very special friend, Marie Rogers of Hamptonville; four sisters, Hazel Royall of Yadkinville, Minnie (Charles) Hemric of Boonville, Shirley Casstevens and Angeline (Clarence) Mook, both of Jonesville; three half sisters, Marie (Ray) Higgins of High Point, Ruth Ashley of Boonville and Grace Boyd of Elkin; three brothers, Fred (Dorothy) King of Yadkinville, Wayne (Jennie) King of Jonesville and the Rev. Spencer (Ruth) King of Boonville; three grandchildren, Sylvia (Keith) Weaver, Lavonna Corder and Melanie Swaim; and two great-grandchildren, Lakken and Keith Weaver II. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday July 28, at Victory Baptist Church by the Rev. Spencer King, the Rev. Gorrell Inscore and the Rev. Junior Royall. Mr. King will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, and other times at the home of a daughter, Lisa Corder, 143 Joe Home Mill Road, Elkin.

LINDSAY

Mr. Jerome F. Lindsay, 230 Craver Drive, Midway Community, passed away Sunday, July 22, 2001, at the Wake Forest Uni-versity-Baptist Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem. He is survived by two daughters, Yolanda Lindsay of Durham and Sokya Lindsay of Charlotte; a son, Chris; two sisters, Flora and Nacy Lindsay, both of Midway; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001,at Righteous Church of God, where the Rev. Leak will officiate. Interment will follow in Saints Delight cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the services from 2 to 2:30 p.m. at the church. The remains may be viewed today from 2:30 to 7 p.m. at Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. Mr. Aldean Martin of 1625 E. Third St., Apt. 206 passed away July 25, 2001, at Baptist Hospital. Visitation will begin at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Beasley's Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Professional services are implemented by Beasley's Funeral Service.

REAVIS

KING - Mrs. Ethel K. Reavis, 89, wife of C. Thad Reavis, of 302 Winchester Drive, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, after an extended illness. She was born June 22, 1912, in Surry County to the Rev. Emmanuel Grant and Lula Boles Key. Mrs. Key died at an early age and Mrs. Reavis was raised by a stepmother, the Rev. Perchie Wagoner Key. Mrs. Reavis was a housewife and currently a member of the First Christian Church in King. She and Thad previously attended Centenary Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are her husband of the home; a daughter, Judy Calloway Watts of King; a granddaughter, Wendy Watts Frye and husband Gary; a great-granddaughter, Kristin Lee-Ann Frye, all of King; and a special niece, Patti Purgason and husband, Wayne of Bethania. Mrs. Reavis was preceded in death by her first husband, David Thomas Calloway; and a grandson, Christopher (Kris) Grant Watts. Funeral services will be held this evening at 7 p.m. in the First Christian Church in King with ministers Gene Thompson, Bill Truitt and Lamar Tillman officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Graveside services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the church cemetery. DURHAM - Mrs. Catherine W. Ruffin, the mother of Benjamin S. Ruffin, passed away Monday, July 23, 2001. The visitation will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Scarborough & Hargett Memorial Chapel located at 306 S. Roxboro St., Durham. Funeral services will be held at noon Saturday, July 28, at the Community Baptist Church, 4821 Barbee St., Durham, (919) 544-1319, where the officiating minister will be Pastor Andrew Singletary. Immediately after the funeral service the family will receive friends at the residence of Mr. Fred Ruffin, 527 Tuggle St., Durham. COLFAX - Mrs. Maxine Idol Stack, 72, of 8930 Bending Road died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospice Unit. She was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Jeneer and Mary Idol. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Benjamin Dale Stack of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce Ann and Robert Nelson of Winston-Salem; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Dale and Jeanne Stack and Ronnie Glen and Rhonda Stack of Colfax; a brother, Wayne Idol of Kernersville; three grandchildren, Ashley Stack, Robby Nelson and Kim Wood; and three great-grandchildren, Hunter Nelson, Courtney Nelson and Danielle Wood. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville by the Rev. Corey Miller. Burial will follow in Bunker Hill cemetery. SURRATT

MAX MEADOWS, Va. - Mr. Oscar Ray Surratt, 93, of Fort Chiswell Road died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. He was born in Wythe County, the son of the late David Anderson Surratt and Ludie Scott Surratt Sutphin. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served in Africa and Europe and was a member of Grover King Post #1115 VFW. Mr. Surratt was preceded in death by his wife, Alma White Surratt; a sister, Clara Rogers; and three brothers, Sherman, Clarence and Noah Sutphin. He was of the Protestant faith. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and George Manuel of Tobaccoville; three grandchildren, Mrs. Amiel (Judi) Rossabi of Greensboro, Lisa Manuel of Belmont and Karen Manuel of Tobaccoville; two great-grandchildren, Rachel Caroline Rossabi and Joseph Amiel Rossabi; a brother, James and Terry Sutphin of Wytheville, Va.; a niece, Terry S. Nelson; and two nephews, Ronald Rogers and Russell Rogers. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Don Scott and the Revs. Hampton and Betty Atkinson officiating. Interment will follow in the West End cemetery. Grover King Post #1115 VFW will conduct graveside military rites. TUTTLE

Mrs. Ethel "Granny" Duggins Tuttle, 91, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Tuttle was born in Stokes County on June 5, 1910, to Hayes Duggins Sr. and Cora Bullins Duggins. She had been a member of Marshall Baptist Church for more than 60 years. Mrs. Tuttle was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Rufus, J.C., Harry, Hayes Jr. and Andrew Duggins. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Polly Layman of Asheville and Mrs. Nancy Holland and husband Don of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Robin Johnson, Kaye Roberts and Cindy Smith; and eight great-grandchildren, Kelly, Colby and Kirby Clark, Seth, Noah and Shelley Roberts and Erica and Kaylee Smith. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Marshall Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ryland Rock and the Rev. James Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Joy Ranch, P.O. Box 727, Hillsville, VA 24343. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

WALL

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Billy Gray "Bill" Wall, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after being ill for a week. He was born July 2, 1929, in Forsyth County to Thurmond F. "Jake" and Cleo Whiten Wall. He served in the North Carolina National Guard. He was a businessman who started out in the financial industry where he ultimately became a regional manager in North Carolina and Tennessee. He owned several used-car lots. Most of his career was spent owning and partnering in tobacco warehouses. For many years, he traveled and worked on the tobacco market from Florida to Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Helen Louise Wall; and a brother, Thomas "Tommy" Wall. Surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy W. and Jimmy Garland of Walkertown, and Barbara W. and Ronnie Lauten of Winston-Salem; two nephews and their wives, Gary and Deborah Garland of Walkertown, and Eric and Dawn Lauten of Winston-Salem; a great-niece, Chloe Lauten; a special aunt and uncle, Christine and Rufus Needham of Winston-Salem; and several cousins. He also leaves many friends, neighbors, business associates and all of the Hanes Mall walkers with whom he spent his mornings. A graveside service, to be conducted by the Rev. Tom Southern, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the family.

ALLRED

Mr. Claude Stevenson Allred Sr., 82, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. He was born Feb. 4, 1919, in Surry County to Sam and Minnie Stimpson Allred. Mr. Allred was a former employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a member of Griffith Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a first class petty officer. He was preceded in death by 12 brothers and sisters. Surviving are his wife, Nellie Vaughn Allred of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Karen Hess and husband Randy of Newton and Ruth Ellen Allred of Pilot Mountain; two sons, Claude Stevenson "Steve" Allred Jr. and wife Anne of Winston-Salem and Dwight Allred and wife Tammy of East Bend; three sisters, Kate Allred of Winston-Salem, Mabel Cook of Westfield and Esther Taylor of Redding, Mass.; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Griffith Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

ATKINSON

Mrs. Rosa Belle Atkinson, 89, died Monday morning, July 23, 2001, at Village Care of King, after a period of declining health. She was born on Nov. 13, 1911, in Chesterfield, S.C., the daughter of the late Hudson and Mae Davis. While she will be missed, those who love her are comforted that her struggles in life are over and she is finally at home with Jesus. Mrs. Atkinson was the beloved wife of the late Mr. Jesse Ellis Atkinson. Surviving are her two daughters, Toni Brewer (Avery) of Winston-Salem and Dorothy Naylor (Watson) of Tobaccoville who cared for her faithfully during her 10 years in nursing-home care; a sister, Elizabeth Smith (Jule) of Cheraw, S.C. Mrs. Atkinson was blessed with 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at New Friendship Baptist Church where Mrs. Atkinson was a member for 36 years. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Pastor Chris Byrne of New Friendship Baptist Church and Pastor Ken Eller of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and also at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Avery Brewer and Mr. and Mrs. Watson Naylor. Memorials may be made to New Friendship Baptist Church, 4258 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107 or Village Care of King, 440 Ingram Road, King, NC 27021.

KING - Graveside services for Carter Gene Ayers, the infant son of Randy Dale and Sandra Lynn Salmon Ayers of Logan Court in King, will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 23, 2001, at the Cornerstone Baptist Church cemetery on Newsome Road in King. The Rev. Daniel Salmon and the Rev. Forrest Evans will officiate. Along with his parents, surviving are maternal grandparents, the Rev. Daniel and Judith Salmon of King; paternal grandparents Ronnie and Verlie Ayers of King; paternal great-grandparents Ray and Minnie Lee Ayers of East Bend; and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Memorials may be made to Harvest Temple Church of God, P.O. Box 633, King, NC 27021. Randy and Sandra wish to give a special "thank you" to Dr. Catherine Arnaud of the Brookview Women's Center and to the 4th Floor Nursing Staff of Forsyth Medical Center.
