WHITE

GERMANTON - Mr. Paul Henry White, 84, of Mercer Street died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at his home after a period of declining health. Mr. White was born March 26, 1917, in Stokes County, the son of the late James and Mary Boles White. He was a member of Corinth Church of Christ in Germanton. Mr. White was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. He had a special place in his heart for Kure Beach. He was an avid fisherman and bowler, but most importantly he was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Mr. White is survived by three daughters, Ramona Bowers and husband David of Germanton, Barbara McGuire of Winston-Salem and Patricia "Patsy" Brannock of Germanton; a son, Chris White of Statesville, formerly of Germanton.; seven grandchildren, Sharon Bowers, Robin (Jim) Vaughn, Amy (Greg) Tuttle, Kelly Bowers, Heather McGuire (Curtis Pope), Ryan White and Josh Brannock; and six great-grandchildren, Chad, Anth-ony "A.J.," Kayla, Jesi, Jamie and Jaden. He is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews and two special friends, Sam and Zac McBride. Mr. White was preceded in death by his wife, Margie Tuttle White; two brothers; and two sisters. Funeral services for Mr. White will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday July 25, 2001, at Red Bank Baptist Church in German-ton with the Rev. Paul Dean officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The family will re-ceive friends at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel from 7 to 9 tonight. BALL

JONESVILLE - Master William Henry Ball, 2, son of Deana Ashley Ball and Scotty Ball, died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Master Ball was born March 1, 1999. He was preceded in death by his grandfather Ricky Ball. He is survived by his parents Deana Ashley Ball and Scotty Ball; his sister, Belinda Faith Ashley; and his grandparents, Robert D. Ashley of North Wilkesboro, Rita Ashley of Austin Traphill, and Elaine Ball, of North Wilkesboro. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 31 at Welcome Valley Baptist Church cemetery in Elkin. The Rev. Cecil Weatherholt will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 30 at Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home in Yadkinville. Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home of Yadkinville will be serving the family.

EVANS

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Robert A. "Bobby" Evans, 73, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at 7:55 p.m. Mr. Evans was born July 5, 1928, in Winston-Salem to Allie Russell and Lillian Hannah Evans. He had retired from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as a security guard. Mr. Evans was of the Apostolic faith. His parents and his youngest son, Ronald Lee Evans, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 55 wonderful years Helen Cates Evans of the home; five children, Danny Evans and wife Judy of Kernersville, Judy Harp of Walkertown, Darlene Grubbs and husband Allen of Thomasville, Terry Evans and wife Kay of Trinity, and Ronnie Evans and wife Jane of King; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Evelyn Cross of Winston-Salem; and two brothers, Michael Evans of Spokane, Wash., and Richard Evans of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 31 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The Revs. Danny Evans and Calvin Mabry will officiate. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

GRIST

Ann Traylor Grist, 78, passed away Saturday, July 28, 2001, at her daughter's home in Winston-Salem. She was born Oct. 27, 1922, to the late Charles Mumford and Kathlyn Jackson Kopp. She was a 1943 graduate of Women's College in Greensboro. Upon graduation, she taught school briefly in Portsmouth, Va., where she met and married her husband, Kermit Traylor, on July 22, 1944. Dr. Traylor preceded her in death Feb. 4, 1974. Mrs. Grist was a longtime member of First Christian Church, where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and held various offices. She was a member of the Child Study Club and worked for the Board of Elections in her precinct. In 1975, she moved to Washington, N.C., where she married Samuel Latham Grist Jr. in 1977. He also preceded her in death July 16, 1992. She was an active member of First Christian Church, where she was an elder and an active member of the Co-Workers' Sunday School Class. While living in Washington, N.C., she was a member of the Stratford Book Club, a volunteer with the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation, and a member of the PEO Sorority. Mrs. Grist is survived by two children, Dan Traylor and his wife Patsy, and Kathy Sink and her husband Mike; two stepchildren, Sam Grist III and his wife Lucy, and Randy Lassiter and husband Bernie; three granddaughters, Debbie Traylor, Rebecca Sink, and Emily Wilson; and five stepgrandchildren, Michelle Redinger, Elizabeth Martin, Hugh David Grist, Lydia Beth Grist, and Samuel Grist. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at First Christian Church in Winston-Salem with the Rev. James P. Cobb officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Oakdale cemetery in Washington, N.C. The family requests memorials be made to First Christian Church, 2320 West Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

HAIRSTON

Mr. Levar Antwain Hairston, 23, of 2365 Riley Forest Drive passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born March 15, 1978, to Stephen and Iona Bristow Hairston. Levar was a graduate of Robert Glenn High School, Class of 1996, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. Levar was a Crosby Scholar, a member of Who's Who of National High School Students, and was a senior at Wake Forest University. He was a member of the New Trinity Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board and the Youth Choir. Levar is survived by his loving parents, Stephen and Iona Bristow Hairston of the home; his sister, Stephanie Hairston, and his brother, Stephen Hairston, both of the home; his maternal grandmother, Margaret Bristow; his paternal grandmother, Virginia Hairston; and many devoted uncles, aunts, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30, at Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Samuels officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Zion Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of the Piedmont, 1225 East 25th Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. (RUSSELL)

HENDRICKS

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Emma Brown Hendricks, 73, of Stage Coach Road in Mocksville, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Autumn Care of Mocksville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eaton Funeral Chapel conducted by the Revs. George Troyer and Doug Smith. Interment will follow in Salem United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mocksville Wesleyan Church Building Fund, 826 Garner Street, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Hendricks was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Rowan County, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Rosie Harkey Brown. She was a nurse's aide with Davie Place in Mocksville and was a member of Mocksville Wesleyan Church. Survivors include her husband Jessie Glenn "Buster" Hendricks of the home; children, Betty Jean Witherspoon, and James G. Hendricks (Pamela) of Mocksville, Gary R. Hendricks of Winston-Salem, and Brenda Kulp Vena (Daniel) of Raleigh; brothers, Bobby Brown of Harmony, and Arthur Brown (Bonnie) of Cooleemee; sisters, Katherine Prevette of Cooleemee, Sadie Hilton (Mack) of Mocksville, and Dorothy Shumaker of South Carolina; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

KIGER

Mrs. Sue Whicker Kiger, 88, of 332 Walkertown-Guthrie Road, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at her residence. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Crews United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Kiger was born Dec. 3, 1912, the daughter of Emory and Rosa Crews Whicker, and a lifelong resident of Guthrie. She was a member of Crews United Methodist Church, which was founded by her grandfather Peace Crews. She sang in the choir and was a member of the Christian Fellowship Sunday School Class. Mrs. Kiger was a graduate of Kernersville High School and was a member of the state championship basketball team. She worked several years for Merle Norman Cosmetics. Mrs. Kiger was preceded in death by her hus-band William Woodrow "Woody"Kiger, three sisters and four brothers. She is survived by two sons, Bob Kiger and wife Eleanor of Winston-Salem, and Terry Kiger and wife Cheryl of Buford, Ga.; five grandchildren, Heather, Christa and Robert Kiger, Michelle Novakovich and husband Loren, and Brett Kiger; and a great-grandson, Nicholas Novakovich. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel in Kernersville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Crews United Methodist Church, 4150 Reidsville Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

McBRIDE

Mrs. Mildred Moore McBride, 92, died Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born October 11, 1908, in West Salem to Edmund Bryant and Lou Latisha Baity Moore. Mrs. McBride lived all her life in Winston-Salem. On June 14, 1930, she was married to Kenneth Gray McBride. He died August 23, 1973. For the last several years, Mrs. McBride had made her home with her daughter, Audrey Thomason and her husband Oscar, who survive. Also surviving are her grandson, Samuel Thomason and his wife Allison, and two great-grandchildren, Amy and Ashley Thomason; a sister, Alice Bates; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Moore; along with several nieces and nephews, all of Winston-Salem. In addition to her husband, Mrs. McBride was preceded in death by a sister, Ella Moore; and brothers Robert, Richard, Harry and Tom Moore. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Mrs. McBride was a member of Salem Baptist Church, where she had been a member longer than any now-living member. She attended Salem Baptist at its first organized location on Marshall Street. As a member of Salem, she sang in the choir and taught junior girls for many years. She loved to sing and sang in a ladies quartet on Dr. Charles Steven's radio program, The Happy Gospel Hour. In her later years, she enjoyed calling the absentees in her Sunday School Class. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 31 at Salem Baptist Church, with Dr. Howard Wilburn and the Rev. Floyd Boyles officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, July 30 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Salem Baptist Church, 429 South Broad Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

MILLER

Mrs. Luther Mae Miller of 2017 Lincoln Ave., the widow of the late Robert Miller, passed away Friday, July 27, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Lillington, where she was a 1934 graduate of Shawtown High School. Mrs. Miller received her nursing training in South Carolina and her cosmetology training in Winston-Salem. She was the first black woman to own her own business in downtown Winston-Salem. Mrs. Miller was a member of New Birth Worship Center in East Bend. She also was a member of the Kimberly Park Senior Citizens. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Camille Miller-Allen, and Mrs. Sandra Miller Jones (Lafayette), both of this city; three grandchildren, William Phillips Jr. (Tammy), Jon Derrick Miller (Charlene), and Bridgette Miller Jones, all of this city; five great-grandchildren; several cousins, among them a devoted cousin, William Murchison of this city; and a devoted family friend, William Phillips Sr. of this city. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 31, at New Birth Worship Center, Reynolda Road Extension/Highway 67 in East Bend. Pastor James L.E. Hunt will officiate and interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services, from 12:30 to 1 p.m., at the Worship Center. The remains may be viewed from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Monday at Clark S. Brown and Sons Funeral Home. The family may be contacted at the residence. MOORE

TOBACCOVILLE - Treva Merritt Rierson Moore, 86, of Tobaccoville Road, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Village Care of King. She was born Feb. 4, 1916, in Stokes County to James Wiley and Nellie Moser Merritt. She was a member of Jefferson Church of Christ and retired from Western Electric after 35 years of service. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Dallas M. "Dack" Rierson, in 1961; her second husband, A.V. "Bum" Moore, in 1988; a sister, Frances Merritt; and two brothers, Ralph and Truman Merritt. Surviving are a son, Donald Wayne Rierson of the home; a stepdaughter, Delphine Pegram and husband James of Rural Hall; four stepgrand-children; a sister, Margie Rominger of King; a brother, Bobby E. Merritt and wife Jane of Germanton; a sister-in-law, Roberta Merritt of Tobaccoville; and a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. Bill Teague officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service, and at other times at their respective homes. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Childrens Hospital, P.O. Box 1945, King, NC 27021.

SMITH

Mr. Henry Smith, 61, of 1401 Bethlehem Lane passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. He was a native of Belews Creek, born Nov. 29, 1939, to Irene Shepherd Smith and the late Banks Smith. Mr. Smith was of the Baptist faith, and an employee of Piedmont Natural Gas Co. with over 36 years of service. He is survived by three daughters, Melvina Brooks, Sheila Brooks, and Terri Brooks, all of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; his dear mother, Irene Shelf of Oak Ridge; sisters, Darlene Martin (William) of Winston-Salem, Maybelle Scott of Winston-Salem, Linda Scales of Jamestown, Dorothy Witherspoon of High Point, Barbara Siler (Renaldo) of High Point, Lorene Burns (Joseph) of Wallburg, Yvonne Vines (Glenn) of High Point, Margaret Shelf of High Point, and Josephine Thompson (Gary); brothers, L.C. Smith (Jean) of Winston-Salem, Banks Smith Jr. of Oak Ridge, Robert Shelf (Teresa) of High Point, Troy Shelf (Donna) of Greensboro, and James Elwood Shelf of Greensboro; his devoted friend, Betty Ree Commodore of the home; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 30 from the chapel of Russell Funeral Home with the Rev. William Alston officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Frances Ellen Stevens Warren, 86, died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Britthaven of Kernersville. Mrs. Warren was born in Lynchburg, Va., a daughter of the late William Henry and Annie Elizabeth Stevens, and attended the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind in Staunton, Va. She was a retiree of Burlington Industries and a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alton Loraine Warren; a daughter, Mary Ellen Warren; a brother, Louis Stevens; and a sister, Sarah Sayers. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Ronald Welborn of Kernersville; two grandchildren, Sharon (Mark) Apple of Kernersville, and Robin (Todd) Compton of Matthews; two great-granddaughters, August Compton and Jamie Apple; a sister, Mary Pauline Porter of Wilmington, Del.; a sister-in-law, Alene Crews of Kernersville; special friends, Sister Janis McQuade of Baltimore, Md., and Earlene and Alvin Crawford, and Phyllis Howell, all of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Roberson. Burial will follow in the Pine Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Dovie Nelson Bowman, 89, went home peacefully Wednesday, July 18, 2001, from the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Stokes County on June 14, 1912, to Eli and Carrie Nelson Nelson. She was a member of Rosebud Christian Church and a homemaker. Mrs. Bowman was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose talents included being a seamstress, crocheting, canning and taking care of her family. Preceding her in death were her husband, Broadus Bowman; a son, Wendell Bowman; three brothers, Manley, Emory and Swanson Nelson; two half sisters; and two half brothers. Surviving are three sons, Gray Bowman and wife Florence and Porter Bowman and wife Betty, all of Walnut Cove and Barlow Bowman and wife Iva of Germanton; five daughters, Diane Southern and husband Joe Lee of Walnut Cove, Jeanette Neal and husband Harvey of Walkertown, Connie Ring and husband Jessee of Winston-Salem, Nelda Goodman and husband Bud of Rutherford College, and Vicky Shore and husband Mark of Walnut Cove; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Bowman of Walnut Cove; a sister, Gracie Redmon of Oak Ridge; two half sisters, Pencie Parlati and husband Tommy of Greensboro and Lois Scism of High Point; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Nelson of Greensboro; 21 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and special friends J.D. and Bonnie Rierson. A 2 p.m. graveside service will be held Friday, July 20, 2001, at Rosebud Christian Church with visitation following at the church. SANDY RIDGE - Mrs. Margaret Reid Brown, 83, of 1145 Troy Brown Road died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Stokes-Reynolds Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Brown was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, was a member of Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church and was retired from Sandy Ridge School with 20 years service. She was a dedicated wife, loving mother, caring grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy William Brown; a grandson, Kevin Harris; her parents, Ruel and Bessie Gatewood Reid; brothers Nick and Odell Reid; and a sister, Audwilla R. Joyce. Survivors include a son, Kenith Allen Brown and wife Margo; daughters Kay B. Harris and husband Terry, Kathy B. Duncan and husband J.D. and Karol B. Mabe and husband Arnold, all of Sandy Ridge; a brother, J.B. Reid of Mayodan; a sister, Evelyn Thomas of Ridgeway, Va.; grandchildren Kris Harris, DeVonne Duncan, Davina Duncan Manuel, Kara Ann Mabe, Ann Brown Lash, Lynne Brown Parr and Troy A. Brown; great-grandchildren Dawson Andrew Manuel, Ray Joyce, Edward Lash and Kenith Lash; stepgreat-grandchildren, Jessica and Reggie Manuel; and a special friend, Heather Hodge. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church and other times at the home of Terry and Kay Harris, 1095 Troy Brown Road, Sandy Ridge. Mrs. Brown will lie in state at the church from 5 p.m. Friday until time of the service on Saturday. BRYANT

Mr. Billy Edward Bryant, 65, of Winston-Salem died Monday, July 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mizpah Moravian Church, con-ducted by the Rev. Jack Nance. Mr. Bryant was a native of Coffee County, Alabama, moved to Chicago, Ill., at a young age and lived in Winston-Salem for the past 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Lena A. Bryant of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Billy Edlena Bryant of Winston-Salem; nine sons, Gary and Rory Bryant of Winston-Salem, David Bryant, Gary Wayne Bryant, Scott Bryant, Jeff Bryant, all of Chicago, Ron Bryant of Walkertown and Jimmy Collins and Aaron Arnder of Winston-Salem; two stepdaugh-ters; his stepmother, Frances Bryant; 11 brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

BURROW

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Kevin Burrow died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 13, 1976. Mr. Burrow was employed by Lowes Hardware, Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Margaret Burrow. Surviving are his mother, Cindy Thompson and husband Eddie; his father, Leon Burrow and wife Shirley; a brother, Shawn Ray Burrow; two stepsisters, Darlene and Vanessa Pate; three stepbrothers, Allen Thompson and Jerome and James Pate; maternal grandparents Phil and Bonnie White; paternal grand-father James Ray Burrow; very special friends Michelle Mabe, Jason Locke, Chris York and many others.
