Twin infant brother Thomas and Tabias Bush passed away July 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Surviving are their mother, Mckole Jennete Friend, and father, Thomas Bush Jr. Arrange-ments are incomplete. Beasley's Services is in charge of services and arrangements.

GARDNER

Mrs. Helen Whitworth Gardner, 67, of Ogburn Avenue, Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist-Medical Center after a extended period of declining health. Mrs. Gardner was the widow of the late Fred W. Gardner. She was born Feb. 17, 1934, in Lowell, Mass., the daughter of the late John and Racheal Hand Whitworth. Mrs. Gardner is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mary Ellen Stupakewicz and Ms. Andrea Gardner, both of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Joann Ruszczyk of New Hampshire; a son, Mr. Stephen Ruszczyk of Massachusetts; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. A memorial ser-vice will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at St. Leo the Great Catholic Church in Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Mr. Jonathan Hanic officiating. The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the service.

HEGE

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Martha Jeannette Whitman Hege, 92, died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born in Forsyth County on May 5, 1909, to Jacob Robert and Martha Jane Pfaff Whitman. She was a graduate Draughon's Business College and was a secretary for B.F. Goodrich and Dalton Hege. Mrs. Hege was a member of Lewisville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allie Lee Hege; three sisters, Ruth Whitman Fraser, Ethel W. Doub and Myrtle Middleton; a brother, Eugene Whitman; and a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. Oscar F. and Annie B. Hege. She is survived by a brother-in-law, Wilf Fraser of Orlando, Fla.; five nieces, Marcelle Doub Duncan, Nancy Middleton Surratt and Anne Middleton Fain, all of Winston-Salem, Peggy Doub Scales of Lewisville and Martha Fraser Maeda of Florida; seven nephews, Douglas Fraser of Australia, Woodford R. Middleton of Raleigh, Robert Middleton of Clemmons, Richard Whitman of Calabash, Keith B. Hege of Mocksville, O. Kendall Hege of Miami, Fla., and George Hege of Charlotte; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Don Routh. Burial will follow at Lewisville United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service at the graveside. The family would like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Lowe and the staff of Vienna Village for all the love and attention given to Mrs. Hege. HICKS

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Robah "Little Man" Edward Hicks Sr., 76, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home. He was born April 26, 1925, in Forsyth County to the Rev. Albert Mathew and Jettie Ragsdale Hicks. Mr. Hicks served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 30 years of service. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and a former member of the Lewisville Volunteer Fire Department. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Vance, David and A.M. Surviving are his wife, Katherine Warden Hicks of the home; two daughters, Doris Beckerdite of the home, and Bonnie Smith and husband Ken of Yadkinville; a son, Robah Hicks Jr. and fiancée Pam Sparks of Stokesdale; a special great-granddaughter, Stephanie Boose; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a former daughter-in-law, Ann Hicks. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bud Owen officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. HOLLIS

Mr. Vincent Joseph Hollis, 49, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Cen-ter. He was born Aug. 16, 1951, in New York to Robert and Rose Hollis. He was preceded in death by his father. Surviving are his mother of the home; and four sisters, Louise Wooten of Salis-bury, Linda Boggs of Winston-Salem, Patricia Stone of Wilming-ton and Joanne Hall of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel. Memorials may be made in care of Mrs. Rose Hollis, 165 Luzelle Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103, for the charity of choice. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrange-ments.

JACOBS

Mother Celia B. Jacobs, of 1400 Williamson St., was born in Seneca, S.C. to the late Pink and Asia Brownlee Dendy. For most of her life, she was a resident of Winston-Salem, where she was a retiree of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the senior choir, former youth department head, Sunday school teacher, and former supper supervisor of the Good News Club. In the community, Mother Jacobs was active in the Friendly Twelve Flower Club and the Morning Star Senior Citizens until experiencing declining health. She was predeceased by her spouse, Ivory Jacobs. Mother Jacobs' earthly pilgrimage ended Tuesday afternoon, July 17, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a period of illness. Left to cherish fond memories are a son, James Benson; two daughters, Overseer Sharon (Ralph) Turner of Winston-Salem and Maria Rutherford of the home; nine grandchildren, including devoted grandchildren Corey and Brandon Rutherford, both of the home; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geneva Jeffrey of Clemmons and Arizona B. Kindle of the home; four brothers, James W. (Geneva) Dendy, Thomas E. (Lena) Benson, Joseph (Mary) Dendy and Clifton Junior Benson, all of Winston-Salem; her godmother, Eva Goodine; goddaughters Deborah E. Smith and Angela Haney; a brother-in-law, Milton Vaughn Sr., all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Morning Star Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Salley officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at the church, and at other times they may be contacted at the residence. (Hooper)

JONES

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Mr. Durward Spencer Jones died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. A highly respected and admired tax professor, Mr. Jones served on the University of Tennessee law faculty for 28 years before his retirement in 1993. He was known as a defender of excellence in the classroom, who had little patience for those who were content with mediocrity. Before joining the faculty at UT, Mr. Jones served his country as a judge advocate for the U.S. Army, taught at the University of North Carolina's Institute of Government, and practiced law with the firm of Adams, Kleemeier and Hagan in Greensboro. While in Knoxville, he also served as counsel with both the Baker Worthington and Baker Donelson law firms. Mr. Jones received both his bachelor of arts and law degree's from UNC at Chapel Hill. An aficionado of Spain, Mr. Jones ran with the bulls in Pamplona for 20 years. He was also an admirer of cool jazz, baroque, classical, chamber and sacred music, and was a member of the East Tennessee Jazz Society. A committed communicant of St. John's Cathedral, Mr. Jones served both as a trainer of lay readers and as a lay reader himself, as well as chalice bearer, and adult Sunday-school teacher. Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, Annie Kelly Jones and Spencer Taylor Jones. Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Virginia Haynes Jones; sons and daughters-in-law the Rev. Gary Durward Jones and wife Cherry Hill Jones of Charlotte and Stephen Hendrix Jones and wife Heidi Zhu Jones of Gaithersburg, Md.; daughter and son-in-law Paisley Jones Townsend and husband Matthew R. Townsend of Flower Mound, Texas; grandchildren Garrison S. Jones, Graham S. Jones, Caroline P. Jones, Olivia C. Jones, Brooks M. Townsend and Melea K. Townsend; and former wife Nancy Hendrix Jones of Knoxville. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. John's Cathedral, with the Rev. Canon Thomas Rasnick, the Rev. Canon Richard Brown and the Rev. Gary D. Jones officiating. Memorial donations may be sent to UT College of Law, 1505 W. JOYNER

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Ila Mae Melton Joyner, 90, of Ray T. Moore Road passed away Thursday, July 19, 2001, at the Yadkin Heritage Care Center She was born Aug. 12, 1910, in Yadkin County to the late Frank and Colie Elizabeth Melton. Mrs. Joyner was more than just a housewife or homemaker, she was active in the day-to-day operations on a farm. She was a member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, where she served as a Sunday-school teacher for more than 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall T. Joyner, and by her twin sisters, Ada Hobson and Ida Hobson. Surviving are a special friend, Judy S. Zachary; her niece, Dorothy Choplin of East Bend; nephew, J.W. Hobson of Maggie Valley; and a great-niece, Clara Hines. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Deep Creek Baptist Church by Dr. Ron Davis. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family would like to give a special thank you for all the love, care, and support given to Mrs. Ila Mae from the staff of Yadkin Heritage Care Center and by Dr. Todd Strickland. KIRBY

KING - The Rev. Lee Roy "Red" Kirby, 80, died Thursday, July 19, 2001. He was born July 1, 1921, in Stokes County to Arthur Lee and Ellen Hauser Kirby. Mr. Kirby served with the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving several medals including two Purple Hearts. He was the founder and pastor of Thru-Way Baptist Church in King and retired in 1985 after 15 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Viola "Jo" Welborn Kirby of the home; a daughter, Sharon (Jerry) Lawson of King; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Bowman of Rural Hall, Julie (Mark) Barnes of Youngsville, and Jeffrey (Joelle) Lawson and Christa (Dwayne) Broyhill, both of King; and five great-granddaughters, Maddison, Brea, Allison, India and Olyvia. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters, Ceyo, Pete, Howard, George "Bud" and Harry Kirby, and Colleen Boles and Lucille Wall. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church on Spainhour Road in King with Brother Roger Baker and Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Cornerstone Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King and other times at his home on Red Kirby Road in King. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. LAMBERT

Gregory Karl Lambert Jr., 30, died July 18, 2001. He was employed at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center as a registered nurse and nursing consultant. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm. Survivors include his wife Karla S. Lambert; his parents, Gregory K. Sr. and Jennie Lambert of Pfafftown; two sisters, Joy Bloxham of Winston-Salem, and Rene Futch of Lake City, Fla.; grandparents Karl and Rose Lambert of Orlando, Fla., and Carmine and Connie Raneri of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; and two nephews, Brandon and Wesley Boxham. After a private ceremony and cremation, a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ardmore Moravian Church at Academy Street and Hawthorne Road. Memorials may be made in Gregory's name to the Make a Wish Foundation of Winston-Salem. "The tremendous out-pouring of sympathy and support is testimony to the impact you had on all you touched." Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

LATHAM

Mrs. Sarah West Latham, 87, the widow of Paul Marvin Latham, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born in Davie County on Aug. 7, 1913, to George Levin and Laura Ward West. She was a longtime member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, in the chapel at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons by the Rev. Karla Farabow. LOVE

MARIETTA, Ga. - Mrs. Louise Holleman Love, 88, of 840 Lecroy Drive, formerly of Benton Road, Winston-Salem died unexpectedly Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Ga. She was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Yadkin County to the late Willie Sanford and Martha Brown Holleman. Mrs. Love was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church since 1944 and was a member of the Willing Workers Sunday school class. She was a member of Jonestown Senior Citizens Club and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 44 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie H. Love Sr. Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Love Oechsle and husband Tony of Venice, Fla.; a son, Charles H. Love Jr. and wife Dorcas of Marietta, Ga.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Martha Powers of Virginia, Elizabeth Bietz, Etta Maynard and Julia Hudspeth, all of Winston-Salem, and Sally Mannis of Greensboro. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Tolbert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. MACKIN

Louis Franklin "Unk" Mackin Sr., of 5171 Horn Drive in Winston-Salem died Wednesday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was a native and lifelong resident of Forsyth County. Mr. Mackin attended the local public schools and was a 1964 graduate of Paisley High School. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church and was a retiree of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Survivors include his loving wife of 36 years Mrs. Gloria Bess Mackin of the home; a son, Louis F. Mackin Jr. of Winston-Salem; a special grandson, Nicholas F. Mackin of the home; six sisters, Ms. Edna Knight, Ms. Frances Steele, Mrs. Roberta Cohn and spouse John, Mrs. Merita Staten and spouse Robert, Mrs. Joan Little and spouse Alvin, and Mrs. Remona Banner and spouse James, all of Winston-Salem; a devoted friend, Julius Goodson of Winston-Salem; a host of sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and a multitude of friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday from the Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church, 795 Crawford Place. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. PIKE

Silently and peacefully, the earthly life of Michael Alan Pike, of 240 Ridge Forest Court, Winston-Salem, came to a close as he slipped into the arms of the almighty God to rest in peace with no more pain on his 51st birthday, July 16, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Medical Center. Michael was born in Washington D.C., July 16, 1950, the youngest child of the late Louise Watts (Pike) Williamson and the late Clyde E. Pike Sr. He lived most of his life in High Point where he attended High Point Central High School. He was known as "Big Mike Pike" on the football team, which he helped win many victories. He was also well known for his home runs on the softball field. At the time of his death, he was residing with his youngest daughter, Terra LaVette Pike, a daughter of Frankie Bivens Pike. Michael was employed by the City of Winston-Salem in Parks and Recreation. Michael was a former member of First Emmanuel Baptist Church in High Point, and after moving to Winston-Salem he rededicated his life to Christ and joined Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Sadie Tensley Watts, John Watts, and Flossie Pike Ballard. He leaves to cherish his joyous memories his wife, Lillie Clark Pike of Fort Irwin, Calif.; and four loving and devoted children, Terra Pike of the home, Wendy (Dwayne) Harbison of Fort Irwin, Calif., Sonji (Timothy) Martin of Fort Campbell, Ky., and Christopher Clark of Carrboro. There are three grandchildren, Dwayne Harbison, Aubrey Martin and Alan Martin. He will also be greatly missed by his devoted and caring siblings, Clyde (Michelle) Pike Jr. of Temple Hills, Md., Judy (Michael) Murray of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Sadie Pike Nelson of Winchester, Va., where he resided for six months. There are also a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, where Pastor Sheldon McCarter will officiate. Interment will follow in Oakwood cemetery, High Point. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the services from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church. There will be a visitation in High Point today from 7 to 8 p.m. at First Emmanuel Baptist Church, 831 Leonard St. The remains may be viewed at Douthit Visitation Center from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The family may be contacted at the residence. SISK

Mr. Danny Miller Sisk, 44, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Lexington Memorial Hospital. He was born May 18, 1957, in Rockingham County to John Miller and Joan Bement Sisk. Mr. Sisk was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. He was an award winning participant at the March of Dimes Chili Championship, well-known for his "Dangerous Dan's Blackhills Chili and Hot Sauce." In addition to his family and many friends, his passions included woodworking, fishing and his dogs. Surviving are his wife, Sandy Sisk of the home; his parents of Winston-Salem; a brother, Gregory J. Sisk of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Melinda Granger and husband Gary of Winston-Salem and Andrea Sasser and husband Robert of Cary; two nieces, Emily and Nicole; a nephew, Patrick; his father-in-law, Charles Dillon and wife Judy of Clemmons; his mother-in-law, Carolyn McGee and husband John T. of Yadkinville; and three loving companions, Chili, Elvis and Tallulah. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, with Deacon Gerard Schumacher officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to March of Dimes Foundation, 500 W. DAVIDSON - Rosemary Bird Stevens died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. She was a graduate of Trinity High School and attended East Carolina University. Survivors include sons Joseph Bird Stevens and wife Jennifer of Cornelius and Ronald Wallace Stevens Jr., Lester Alex Stevens and Antony Brian Stevens, all of High Point; sisters Emily Corneliuson and husband How-ard, and Norma N. Bundy and husband Jerry, all of Trinity, and Ann Bird Adams of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Kaitlyn and Jess Stevens, both of High Point; numerous nieces and nephews; and her former husband, Ronald W. Stephens Sr. of Oklahoma. Her first husband Joseph Exton Bird Jr. preceded her in death. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21 at Raymer Funeral Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Raymer Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 500 E.
