TUTTLE

Mrs. Ethel "Granny" Duggins Tuttle, 91, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Tuttle was born in Stokes County on June 5, 1910, to Hayes Duggins Sr. and Cora Bullins Duggins. She had been a member of Marshall Baptist Church for more than 60 years. Mrs. Tuttle was preceded in death by her parents, and brothers Rufus, J.C., Harry, Hayes Jr. and Andrew Duggins. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Polly Layman of Asheville and Mrs. Nancy Holland and husband Don of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Robin Johnson, Kaye Roberts and Cindy Smith; and eight great-grandchildren, Kelly, Colby and Kirby Clark, Seth, Noah and Shelley Roberts and Erica and Kaylee Smith. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Marshall Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ryland Rock and the Rev. James Wright officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Joy Ranch, P.O. Box 727, Hillsville, VA 24343.

WALL

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Billy Gray "Bill" Wall, 72, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after being ill for a week. He was born July 2, 1929, in Forsyth County to Thurmond F. "Jake" and Cleo Whiten Wall. He served in the North Carolina National Guard. He was a businessman who started out in the financial industry where he ultimately became a regional manager in North Carolina and Tennessee. He owned several used-car lots. Most of his career was spent owning and partnering in tobacco warehouses. For many years, he traveled and worked on the tobacco market from Florida to Kentucky. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Helen Louise Wall; and a brother, Thomas "Tommy" Wall. Surviving are two sisters and brothers-in-law, Peggy W. and Jimmy Garland of Walkertown, and Barbara W. and Ronnie Lauten of Winston-Salem; two nephews and their wives, Gary and Deborah Garland of Walkertown, and Eric and Dawn Lauten of Winston-Salem; a great-niece, Chloe Lauten; a special aunt and uncle, Christine and Rufus Needham of Winston-Salem; and several cousins. He also leaves many friends, neighbors, business associates and all of the Hanes Mall walkers with whom he spent his mornings. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A graveside service, to be conducted by the Rev. Tom Southern, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 27, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park.

DAVIS

CLEMMONS - Miss Jewell F. Davis died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Clemmons Village Nursing Home at the age of 95. She was born Dec. 1, 1905, to the late A.W. "Dock" Davis and Jennie Cornish Davis. She was a graduate of Woman's College in Greensboro and did graduate work in library science at Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She was employed for several years in government agencies. When she retired, Dec. 31, 1969, as chief of technical services in the library of the office of the secretary of commerce, she received the Bronze Medal award for outstanding service. She was a member of Centenary Methodist Church in Davidson County, the Clemmons Homemakers Club, the Senior Citizens Club and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She also served as church librarian for several years. Surviving are a sister, Dorothy Taylor of Clemmons; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Fannie Davis and Lily Tesh; and four brothers, Allen Davis, Charlie Davis, Woodrow Davis and Kenneth Davis, who was killed in World War II. A brief graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Centenary Methodist Church in Davidson County by the Rev. Barry Lemons. The family will receive friends after the service in the narthex. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Centenary Church in Davidson County or to a charity of choice.

DOSS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Dessie Virginia Kirkman Doss, 78, of 550 Poteat Road, the wife of Mr. Roy Doss passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Doss was born in Surry County, May 5, 1923, to the late Arthur Washington and Pearl Gammons Kirkman. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was a wonderful homemaker. Survivors include her husband, Mr. Roy Doss of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pansy Craddock Wheeling and husband Cecil of Mount Airy; four sons and two daughters-in-law, Artis and Carol Doss, Wayne Doss, Ronnie Doss and Gary and Linda Doss, all of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; three stepgreat-great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Nina and John Murphy of Mount Holly; a brother and sister-in-law, Benston and Treva Kirkman of Mount Airy; and a foster brother and sister-in-law Lawrence and Joan Simmons of Belmont. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Doss was preceded in death by an infant son, Bobby Gene Doss; and two brothers, Gurney Kirkman and Paul Kirkman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Pastor Randall Smith, Pastor Brad Atkins and the Rev. Lee Boyette. Burial will follow at Skyline Memory Gardens.

FULP

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Harvey Alexander Fulp, 78, died Thursday at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. Mr. Fulp was born Nov. 22, 1922, to the late Hughie A. and Lula Corns Fulp. He was a longtime member of Bethel Baptist Church and served as a deacon there for many years. He was a World War II veteran and was retired from Hanes Dye and Finishing Co. Mr. Fulp was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Rupert and Vester Fulp. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Geneva Fulp of the home; three sons, James H. Fulp and wife Patsy, David H. Fulp and wife Linda and Paul T. Fulp; and two daughters, Nellie Bobbit and Bonnie Clemens and husband Robert. He had nine grandchildren, Lisa Brown (Terry), Sherri Wicker (Lee), Daniel Fulp (Devara), Michael Bobbit, Marie Brown (Donnie), John Clemens (Betty), Angela Weiner (James), Joshua Fulp and Kristin Fulp. There are eight great-grandchildren, Jarek Brown, Whitney Wicker, Elizabeth Wicker, Carlene Garrison, Jessica Garrison, Dakota Brown, Abigail Clemens and Nathan Clemens; a brother, Roscoe Fulp; and two sisters, Virginia Bennett and Addie Galloway. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church. Pastor Keith Heitman will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Saturday evening at Burroughs Funeral Home and other times at the home of his daughter, Bonnie Clemens.

GREENWOOD

Mr. Corbett Andrew Greenwood, 81, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 7, 1919, in Surry County to Will and Fannie Perdew Greenwood. Mr. Greenwood was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was a lifelong member of the VFW Post #9010 and belonged to the Jonestown Senior Citizens. Mr. Greenwood was preceded in death by his parents; a son, James Greenwood; and a brother, Raymond Greenwood. Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Mrs. Kathleen Greenwood of the home; a son, Randy Greenwood (wife Kaye) of Lewisville; a granddaughter, Morgan Greenwood of Lewisville; a brother, Howard Greenwood of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Tolbert officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

IRELAND

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Hattie Wooten Ireland, 91, died Thursday, July 26, 2001, at the Yadkin Nursing Center. Mrs. Ireland was born Sept. 12, 1909, in Yadkin County to Johnnie and Nancy Weatherman Wooten. She was a homemaker and a member of Branon Friends Meeting. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Lee Ireland. Surviving are three children, Johnnie Lee (Barbara) Ireland of Yadkinville, Sylvia (Richard) Porter of Peachtree City, Ga., and Peggy (Duane) Long of Yadkinville; nine grandchildren, Donna Ireland, Carol Reynolds, Kelly Reinhardt, Melissa Bruce, Andrea Thorpe, Kimberly Porter, Michael Long, Becky Sherrill and Patrick Long; and 13 great-grandchildren, Richard Cranfill, Chelsea Williams, Molly Reynolds, Jason Reinhardt, Stephanie Bruce, Hannah Bruce, Amber Thorpe, Christina Thorpe, Chris Bowles, Zachary Long, Bailey Sherrill, Vada Sherrill and Darby Sherrill. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at Branon Friends Meeting by the Rev. Joe Reece. Mrs. Ireland will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 28, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

LEMONS

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Dorothy Baker Lemons, 76, passed away Friday, July 27, 2001. She was born to George T. and Viola Feldmeyer Baker on Dec. 14, 1924, in Erie County, N.Y. She married Paul E. Lemons on April 22, 1943, in Buffalo, N.Y. He preceded her in death Sept. 30, 1978. Mrs. Lemons was a longtime member of Woodland Baptist Church and a member of its Faithful Followers Sunday school class for more than 32 years. She was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. She is survived by six children, Paul M. Lemons and his wife Barbara, Kathryn Lemons, Diane Tucker and her husband Harold, Michele Pennell and her husband Gary, Jo Ann Mendenhall and her husband J.B., and Beverly Riddle and her husband David; 12 grandchildren, Theresa Brown, Deirdre Stevens, Mark Tucker, Danielle Peddycord, Shelly Redmond, Donald Brown, Derek Lemons, Jimmy Mendenhall, Melissa Earnhardt, Amanda Abbott, Jeremy Mendenhall and Jason Redmond; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Milton Baker. Her children will rise up and call her blessed. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, 2001, at Woodland Baptist Church. Mrs. Lemons will lie in state at the church an hour prior to the service. The Rev. R. Zeno Groce and the Rev. Tim Gammons will officiate. Interment will follow at Waughtown cemetery. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Son's Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Woodland Baptist Church, 3665 Patterson Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

McMICHAEL

MADISON - Mr. Dalton L. McMichael, 87, of 505 W. Murphy St. died Friday, July 27, 2001, at the Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at Ray Funeral Home in Madison.

PARKER

Kati Jean Parker, the infant daughter of Kristy and David Parker, died Thursday evening, July 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Taylor Parker of the home. A private funeral service for close friends and family will be held at Maple Springs United Methodist Church on Sunday, July 29, at 2 p.m., officiated by the Rev. Randy Waugh. The family will receive friends for 30 minutes prior to the service. A private burial will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park.

PEELER

Mr. Thomas L. Peeler, 60, of Winston-Salem died Friday, July 27, 2001, at his home. Mr. Peeler was born Jan. 26, 1941, in Salisbury to Bernard K. and Margaret Albright Peeler. He was a member of Olivet Moravian Church. He served in the U.S. Air Force and retired from AT&T-Lucent Technologies as an associate engineer. After retirement, he was employed by Salem Technologies Inc. as manufacturing manager. Mr. Peeler was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Ned Peeler. Surviving are his wife, Roslyn Arthur Peeler of the home; a daughter, Jill Dillon and husband Johnnie of Pfafftown; a son, Brad Peeler of California; three grandchildren, Zachary Dillon, Amy Dillon and Sarah Dillon; and his mother, Margaret Albright Peeler of the Lutheran Home in Salisbury. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Olivet Moravian Church with the Rev. Douglas Rights and the Rev. Donald R. Winters officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Memorials may be made to Olivet Moravian Church, 2205 Olivet Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or to Cancer Services Inc., 3175 Maplewood Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road is serving the family.

TATUM

PINNACLE - Mr. William Howard Tatum, 87, of 1019 Stoney Ridge Road, died Wednesday night at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was born in Pinnacle, Aug. 12, 1913, to the late Mr. William Price Tatum and Mrs. Nicy Revels Tatum. He was a deacon of Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church and retired from the Pinnacle and Shoals Elementary Schools after 24 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 70 years, Mrs. Elizabeth Manns Tatum of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Evelyn T. Anthony of Pfafftown and Mrs. Christine Porter of Pinnacle; three sons and three daughters-in-law, William (the Rev. Juanita B.) Tatum of Winston-Salem, Eugene (Juanita A.) Tatum of Pfafftown and the Rev. James (Ollie) Tatum of East Bend; 13 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a brother, Albert (Jessie) Tatum of Winston-Salem; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and devoted friends. He was preceded in death by a grandson. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, Perch Road, Pinnacle, the Rev. Juanita B. Tatum will officiate and the Rev. Benjamin Mittman Sr. will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 Saturday evening at the church and other times, the family may be contacted at the home. Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WARDEN

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Hal Franklin Warden, 82, a loving husband, father, and grandfather died Friday, July 27, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Warden was born Jan. 2, 1919, in Yadkin County to Wesley and Effie Steelman Warden. He was a retired carpenter and a member of Pilot View Friends Meeting. Mr. Warden is survived by his wife, Annie Pearl Collins Warden of the home; a daughter, Linda (Doc) Dixon of Yadkinville; a grandson, Michael (Shelia) Hawks of Mount Airy; two great-grandsons, Justen and Tyler Hawks; two stepgrandchildren, Cathy Wright of East Bend and the Rev. Robin Dixon of Yadkinville; four stepgreat-grandchildren; a stepgreat-great-grandchild; a sister, Kate Miller of Statesville; and two brothers, John (Genevieve) Warden and Guy (Elsie) Warden, all of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2001, at Pilot View Friends Meeting by the Rev. C.G. White, the Rev. Don Lewellyn and the Rev. Robin Dixon. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 28 at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 North, Yadkinville. The family requests that memorials be made to Pilot View Friends Meeting, 3225 Pilot View Church Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055.

ADKINS

Mrs. Katherine Elliott Adkins, 74, died Saturday morning at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of declining health. She was born in Pittsylvania County, Va., Feb. 12, 1927, to Ernest C. Elliott and Hattie Lee E. Elliott. Mrs. Adkins moved from Danville, Va., to Winston-Salem in the mid-1960s. She had worked at Forsyth Memorial Hospital as a licensed practical nurse and retired from Knollwood Hall in 1991. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was very gracious to everyone. She was dearly loved by her family and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Edward Adkins in 1972. Surviving are her son, Michael Adkins and wife Jeanne of Winston-Salem; a granddaughter, Jackie Geiger, and a great-grandson, Allan Geiger III, both of Clemmons; and two sisters, Berda Lawrence and Alse Owen, both of Danville. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Highland Burial Park in Danville with the Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating. There will be no formal visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of North Carolina, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 550, Charlotte, NC 28210. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel is serving the Adkins family.

BARNHARDT

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Edith Wooten Barnhardt, 77, of U.S. Highway 64 West, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Rowan Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Center United Methodist Church with the Revs. Mary Carnes and Clyde Settle officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday. They request memorials be considered for Center United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 376 U.S. Hwy. 64 West, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Barnhardt was born Sept. 21, 1923, in Rowan County to the late William H. and Ollie Mae Pence Wooten, and was owner and manager of American Café and owner of Swicegood Paper Corp. in Salisbury. She was a member of Center United Methodist Church and an active participant in Relay for Life. She was preceded in death by her husband Charlie Barnhardt in 1993. Survivors include two children, Deena (Tim) Abee of Mocksville, and Jeff Barnhardt of Raleigh; three grandchildren, Tabitha, Amber and Sarah Barnhardt; a sister, Dorothy Golnick (Walter) of Rockville, Md.; sisters-in-law, Jean Wooten of Woodleaf, Sadie Barnhardt of Cooleemee, and Minnie Lee Barnhardt of Mocksville; and several nieces and nephews.

BILLIG

Mrs. Patricia Ann Bush Billig, 48, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Billig was born July 10, 1953, in York, Penn., to Harold M. and Dorothy Zimmerman Bush. She was a former employee of U.S. Airways and was a member of Friedberg Moravian Church. Mrs. Billig was preceded in death by her father. Surviving are her husband, David Billig of the residence; three daughters, Cynthia Elaine, Kimberly Anne and Sarah Leanne, all of the residence; her mother, Dorothy Z. Bush of Winston-Salem; and a brother, Richard M. Bush of Columbia, S.C. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 23 at Friedberg Moravian Church. The Rev. G. Thomas Shelton will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405; or to a church of the donor's choice.
