KING - Mr. Spotwood "Spot" Boyd Bowers, 79, of Mountain View Road and formerly of Hamlet, died unexpectedly Friday, July 20, 2001. He was born May 12, 1922, in Littleton to Wiley Powell and Indie Robinson Bowers. Mr. Bowers had served as administrator for Roanoke Rapids Hospital for 20 years, Laurens District Hospital for two years, and Hamlet Hospital for eight years retiring in 1981. Surviving are his wife Martha Bryte Lane Bowers of the home; two daughters, Deborah Bowers (Neal) Oliver of Pilot Mountain; and Martha Bryte Bowers of Winston-Salem; two sons, Spotswood "Boyd" (Cathy) Bowers Jr. of Rockingham, and Parker Anderson Bowers of Raleigh; two grandchildren, Joey and Lane Oliver of Pilot Mountain; a sister, Indie (Julian) Parks of Rocky Mount; three brothers, Fred (Ida) Bowers of Roanoke Rapids, Wiley (Elaine) Bowers Jr. of Bothell, Wash., and Frank (Dorothy) Bowers of Eden; and a number of nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 23, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. Mark Mashburn, OSL, officiating. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Betty Marie Atkins Carpenter, 73, of 1982 Red Brush Road, wife of Luther Lee Carpenter, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Carpenter was born in Surry County on July 6, 1928, the daughter of the late Brower and Esther Simpson Atkins. She was a retired teacher's assistant from Beulah Elementary School, and was of the Primitive Baptist faith. Survivors include her husband of 57 years Luther Lee Carpenter of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Jane and David Bean of Mount Airy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roger and Patty Carpenter, Dewey and Clair Carpenter, and Johnny and Jan Carpenter, all of Mount Airy; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one stepgrandchild. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Carpenter was preceded in death by two sisters, Josephine Jones and Ocie Coalson; and a brother, Jack Atkins. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 23, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Jessup and Elder Alan Terry. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Wilma Putnam Collins, 69, of 506 Lake Drive, died unexpectedly Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was the widow of Lloyd Collins, who preceded her in death in 1994. Mrs. Collins was of the Baptist faith. She had retired from Warren Drycleaners in Kernersville with more than 20 years of service. Surviving are a daughter, Renee Alexander and husband Robert of the home; two sons, James Oliver and David Oliver, both of Thomasville; a sister, Mrs. Leta Cranfield of Julian; and a brother, Billy Putnam of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, July 23 at Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall by the Rev. R. Zeno Groce. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. Mrs. Nancy Fisher Deal, 80, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 26, 1921, in Forsyth County, the eighth of nine children, to O.H. and Mittie Yokley Fisher. She graduated from South High School in 1937 at the age of 15. She was very active in sports and cheerleading. Mrs. Deal's work included legal secretary, credit manager at Montaldo's, secretary to the Director of Nursing at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and homemaker. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines for several years, and a lifelong member of Trinity Moravian Church. Preceding her in death were her husband of 50 years J.D. Deal; a granddaughter, Robin Russell; brothers, William and O.H. Fisher Jr.; and sisters, Grace Medearis, Alberta Waggoner and Margaret Anderson. Surviving are two daughters, Patsy Morris and husband Toby of Raleigh, and Bonnie Russell and husband Pat of Winston-Salem; four grand-children, Skip Morris of Golds-boro, Michael Morris of Raleigh, Angie Heath of Advance, and Patrick Russell of Greensboro; five great-grandchildren, Jordan, Curran and Jamie Morris of Golds-boro, and Brooke Padgett and Ryan Heath of Advance; two sisters, Dixie Houston and Cleve Peelle of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jack Fisher of Winston-Salem; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Moravian Church with the Revs. Patricia F. Garner and John G. Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. Mrs. Jeanette Jackson Ellerbe, 57, of 435 Corbin St., went home peacefully Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Society Hill, S.C., Nov. 10, 1943, to the late Bell Jackson and Curly Richardson. She attended Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, and was a retired employee of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in New York, N.Y., with 17 years of service. She was a devoted member of Pilgrim Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served on the Nurses Board. She returned to Winston-Salem after living in New York for 40 years. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Robert and Charles Jackson. She is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years Nealie Lee Ellerbe; two daughters, Patricia and Cynthia Ellerbe; four grandsons, Donielle, Antonio, Charles and Clarence Neal of Winston-Salem; a brother, Toy Jackson (Joyce), and four sisters, Fannie Bradley, Careen Williams, and Lydia and Mattie Jackson, all of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece, Lisa Jackson of Georgia; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 from the Spencer Memorial Christian Church (1410 Douglas St.) with Pastor Johnny Scott officiating. Mr. Clay Maurice Goodson, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, 69, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Dec. 20, 1931, in Forsyth County to Henry M. and Carrie Kiser Goodson. Mr. Goodson was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and High Point University. He was owner of Clay Goodson Accounting Service and a member of Konnoak Baptist Church. Mr. Goodson was an avid sports fan and was heavily involved in South Little League and Mariners A.A.U. Baseball where his grandchildren participated. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Parks Goodson of the home; three daughters and their husbands, Cindy Goodson Alexander and Paul of Hampton, Ga., Mindy Goodson Leonard and Craig of Tyro, and Kathy F. Beck and Keith of Winston-Salem; two sons and their wives, Mark Henry Goodson and Anne of Charlotte, and Joseph D. Mrs. Sadie Elizabeth McCarrell Grier, 75, of 2428 Greenway Ave., daughter of the late Frank and Lizzie McCarrell, departed this life Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born April 18, 1926, in Greenville County, S.C., and came to Winston-Salem at an early age. She was a faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church. Mrs. Grier leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted daughter, Lynda McCarrell Venable, granddaughter, Kimberly Venable Hickman (Marty), and two great-grandchildren, Keya Glenn and Ronda Hickman, all of Winston-Salem; a devoted son-in-law, Ronald S. Venable of Winston-Salem; a sister, Elsie Mae King of the home; a host of devoted nieces and nephews; and special friends, Mrs. Alberta Rynes, Mrs. Hazel Bailey, Mrs. Leola Fowler, and Mrs. Willa Shelton. CLEMMONS - Mrs. Mary Frances Whitehurst Griffith, 82, died Friday, July 20, after an extended illness in the J. Paul Sticht Center on Aging. Mrs. Griffith was born March 13, 1919, in Bethel. During her illness, she fought with the same independence, courage and strength that had exemplified her life. While she will be missed, those who love her are comforted that her struggles in life are over and she is finally at home. Mrs. Griffith's life was founded on her love of the Lord, her family and her many friends. Her warm smile endeared her to everyone she met. Her love of children was demonstrated in her 20 years of public school teaching. During her retirement years, she was an active member of Clemmons United Methodist Church, the Annie Alspaugh Circle, and the Trim and Tone Lunch Bunch. Mrs. Griffith was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years William Grant Griffith on April 8, 2001. Surviving are her three daughters, Marsha Faye Griffith of Greenville, Daisy G. Fowler and husband Thomas H. Fowler of Lewisville, and Patsy G. Little and husband Godfrey G. Little of Clemmons; her grandsons, William G. Fowler of Los Angeles, Calif., Michael G. Little and wife Angie of Atlanta, Ga., Roger T. Fowler and wife Kim of Lewisville, and Michael and Thomas Fowler of Lewisville; three great-grandchildren, Christine Anne Little, Eleanor Joan Fowler, and Zachary Grey Little; two sisters, three nieces and three nephews. CLEMMONS - Mr. Joe Edgar "Ed" Hepler Jr., 93, of Harper Road, beloved father, husband and friend to many who knew him, died Thursday July 19, 2001, at Clemmons Village. He was born May 19, 1908, in Forsyth County to Joe Edgar Hepler and Coral Catherine Ragland Hepler. He retired from Hanes Knitting after 47 years of service as a supervisor. Mr. Hepler was a longtime member of Warners Chapel Church of Christ. He loved to sing, eat and entertain his friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence P. Hepler and Fred A. Hepler. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Evola Harper Hepler; two daughters, Grace Hepler of Clemmons and Mary H. Keiger of Midway; a grandson, Gene Keiger; and two great-grandchildren. HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Stoney Gray Johnson, 60, of Asbury Church Road, passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 14, 1940, in Yadkin County to the late Richard Finley Johnson and Ozelle Hutchens Ball. In addition to his parents, Mr. Johnson was preceded in death by a son, Stoney Gray Johnson Jr.; a daughter, Jean Charpentier; and by a sister, Betty Johnson Allen. Surviving are his wife of 28 years Karen Ruth Adkins Johnson of the home; a daughter, Denise Johnson (Danny) Bledsoe of Hamptonville; four grandchildren, Kourtney Lynn Johnson, Joseph Lowrance Jr., Junior Bledsoe, and Logan Bledsoe; and a brother, Rondal "Ron" (Drema) Johnson of Boonville. WINSTON-SALEM - Mr. Willis Jones Motsinger, 76, of 118 Townsend Drive died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 19, 1924, in Forsyth County, a son of the late Ira L. and Dora Jones Motsinger. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a very active member of Sedge Garden United Methodist Church, where he served as chairman of the trustees and various other committees. He retired from and was the former owner of Willis J. Motsinger Real Estate Co. Surviving are his wife, Emma June Hiatt Motsinger of the home: three daughters, Willann Motsinger Baker and husband Lowell of Clemmons, Lorilynn Egan and husband Christopher of Virginia Beach, Va., and Alisa Motsinger Stevens of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Edna Wooten and Frances Spach of Winston-Salem, Nancy Idol of Greensboro, and Linda Harlan of Raleigh; five brothers, A.C. DOBSON - Mr. Joseph Lynwood Poore, 63, of 7852 Highway 601, husband of Norma Lee Marion Poore, passed away Friday, July 20, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Poore was born Jan. 6, 1938, in Henry County, Va., to the late Lacy and Lela White Poore. Mr. Poore retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, and was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. Survivors include his wife Norma Lee Marion Poore of the home; a daughter, Tracey Poore of Mount Airy; a stepdaughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Randy Bledsoe of Dobson; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Chad and Jeana Lewis of Ararat, and Jaime and Myra Lewis of Dobson; a granddaughter, Amber Poore of Mount Airy; six stepgrandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Pete Simmons of Claremont; and two brothers and sisters-in-law, Lester and Willie Poore, and James and Doris Poore, all of Mount Airy. KING - Mr. Thomas Glenn Wall, 51, husband of Hope Brim Wall, of 207 Kirby Road, passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 8, 1950, in Forsyth County to Raleigh Thomas and Nellie Mae Burrow Wall. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam Conflict and served in Operation Desert Storm. Mr. Wall was of the Moravian faith. He is survived by his wife of 11 years Hope Brim Wall of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Glenn Wall Jr. and wife Christy of Lexington; three grandchildren, Christian Lee Wall, Lauren Michelle Wall, and Kenneth Scott Wall; two stepchildren, Kelly and Steven Martin of Mount Airy, and Kevin Shawn and Samantha Scott of Pinnacle; three stepgrandchildren, Abbey Martin, Ryan Martin, and Lindsay Scott; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and Rex Baker, and Bettie and Billy Long, all of King, and Patricia and Herb Williams of Clemmons; a stepmother, Helen Wall of King; a stepbrother, Dennis Joyner of Bowie, Md.; and a stepsister, Amy Parnell of King. KING - Claude Ray Webster, 86, of Mountain View Church Road, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 12, 1914, in Stokes County. He was preceded in death by his wife Vada Mae Gordon Webster in 1986; and a son, Ray Gordon Webster in 1998. Surviving are a sister-in-law, Mae (Reggie) Spainhour of Rural Hall; a number of nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Charles (Josie) Spainhour of King; and special friends, Rex and JoAnn Lawson of King. Claude was a member of Quaker Gap Baptist Church where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 23. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. JONESVILLE - Mr. Luther Gordon "L.G." Welborn, 67, of 5009 Haynes Road, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Welborn was born in Wilkes County Sept. 5, 1933, to Luther C. and Nanny Myers Welborn. He was a self-employed brick mason, and a member of Temple Hill Methodist Church and the Elkin Masonic Lodge. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Welborn Dec. 24, 1979. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Irene Ethel Baker Blevins, 71, died Tuesday, July 24, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Blevins was born April 2, 1930, in Surry County to David and Ethel Davis Baker Dezern. She was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, William Hardin Blevins.
