BLEVINS

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Sophia Warren Blevins, 82, the widow of Dempsey Blevins of Mountain View Road, formerly of Hamby Mountain Road, Purlear, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Blevins was born April 28, 1919, in Wilkes County to John and Myrtle Brooks Warren. Mrs. Blevins was a member of Bellview Baptist Church in Laurel Springs and had read the Bible through several times. Surviving are a son, Jerry Blevins and wife Geneva of Purlear; three daughters, Ada Hendrix of North Wilkesboro, Rachel Holloway and husband Don of Troy, Mich., and Myrtle Brown and husband Bill of Hamptonville; two sisters, Bessie Elledge and Arizona Warren, both of North Wilkesboro; two grand-daughters, Kathy Booe of Union Grove and Pam Holloway of Troy, Mich.; and two great-grand-daughters, Kristen Booe and Lori Booe, both of Union Grove. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, at Miller Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Wilcox and the Rev. Hunter Church officiating. Burial will be in the Cranberry Baptist Church cemetery in Laurel Springs. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday before the funeral and other times at the home of a sister, Arizona Warren, 1273 Mountain View Road, North Wilkesboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cranberry Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o David Taylor, 1036 Peach Bottom Road, Laurel Springs, NC 28644.

COLEMAN

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Helen Marie Carlson Coleman, 82, died Monday, July 23, 2001. Mrs. Coleman was born March 18, 1919, in Mitchell, S.D., to Francis William and Helen Bruitty Carlson. She was a homemaker and was of the Catholic faith. Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, William Howard Cole-man. Surviving are four children, Rickie (Shelia) Coleman of Pfaff-town, Frankie Coleman and Dixie (Roger) Hedrick of Hamptonville and Diana (Chester) Lambeth of Pilot Mountain; eight grand-children, Pati Miller, Sammy Sykes, Timmy Sykes, Chris Sykes, Junior Coleman, Tracy Hedrick, Travis Hedrick and Scott Hedrick; and 12 great-grandchildren, Devin Miller, Cameron Miller, Kayla Miller, Autumn Miller; D.J. Sykes, Jake Sykes, Sklylar Perkins, Kami Cecil, Mya Cecil, Chloe Cecil, Dustin Roberson and Brad Roberson. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Home Chapel, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville, by Pastor Ronnie Comer. Mrs. Coleman will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 25 at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Yadkinville.

COTHREN

ELKIN - Mr. Clyde Cothren, 85, of Elk Spur Street, died Tuesday morning, July 24, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Dr. Bill Johnson, the Rev. Joe Dell Rust and Mr. Phillip Thompson, Scout Executive, will conduct a graveside service at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Hollywood cemetery. The family will meet with friends after the service at the cemetery. Mr. Cothren was born in Wilkes County on Aug. 12, 1915, to Ford and Ethel Billings Cothren. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of the local VFW. He served as a multi-sports official for regional high schools and was a member of the N.C. High School Athletic Association for more than 30 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Elkin, retired from Chatham Manufact-uring Co. and was very active with the Boy Scouts of America as long as his health permitted. His daughter, Mary Margaret Cothren, preceded Mr. Cothren in death in 1999. Surviving are, his wife, Cloie Holcomb Cothren of the home; a son, Joseph Edward (Elizabeth) Cothren; and a granddaughter, Mary Victoria Cothren, all of Ithaca, N.Y. The family suggests that any memorials be made to Boy Scouts of America, Laurel District, c/o Old Hickory Council, 6600 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or to the charity of the donor's choice. CRESON

Mr. Irvin Theodore Creson, 82, of 430 Oak Summit Road, Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County to Cicero and Agenes Creson. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a loving father and grandfather. Surviving are his wife, Betty Weaver Creson; two sons and daughters-in-law Gregory (Tenia) and Leonard (Teresa); four grandchildren, Bryan, Brent (Rendy), Wesley and Tracy; and two great-grand-children, Zoe and Kelsey. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Brown Whittington. He has one living sister and brother-in-law, Francis Lorene and Conrad Flynt; and a brother, J.M. Creson. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Hayworth Miller Funeral Home, Rural Hall Chapel. Memorials may be made to the charity of donor's choice. A private committal service will be conducted Thursday.

FRYE

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Clarence Grady "Smiley" Frye, 68, of 378 Norman Road died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Surry County Sept. 13, 1932, to the late Edgar Roscoe and Elza Adkins Frye. Mr. Frye served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, was a member of the VFW and a retired traffic engineer for the City of Mount Airy. He was a member, a deacon and trustee of Slate Mountain Baptist Church in Mount Airy. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Jessup Frye of the home; brothers and sisters-in-law Thomas W. and Robbie Frye of Winter Park, Fla., Brockley and Mary Frances Frye and Gayle and Vicky Frye, all of Mount Airy; several nieces and nephews; several great-nieces and nephews; and two godchildren, Sarah Rogers of Walnut Cove and Nathan Frye of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Frye was preceded in death by a brother, James "Jimmy" Frye. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Howell Funeral Chapel of Pilot Mountain conducted by the Rev. Dewayne Sands and the Rev. Verlon Combs. Interment will be at Skyline Memory Gardens in Mount Airy. Full military honors will be conducted by VFW Post #2019 of Mount Airy and Post #9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials or donations may be made to Slate Mountain Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Sherri Harriman, 3644 E. Pine St., Mount Airy, NC 27030. HARDIN

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Rulene Greene Hardin died Monday, July 23, 2001, at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was born March 25, 1911, in Rutherford County and was formerly of Greensboro. She resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Pat and Wayne Whitaker, of Lynchburg, Va. Her husband, Boyd N. Hardin, preceded her in death. She is survived by her son, James K. Hardin and wife Betty Jo; daughters Jo Ann H. Markland and Shirley H. Black of Lady Lake, Fla., Patricia H. Whitaker and husband Wayne of Lynchburg, Va., and Debra H. Petersen and husband Thomas, of Winston-Salem; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Ada Mace Bergin of Shelby; and a number of nieces and nephews. The visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Street. The funeral will follow at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the funeral home. Burial will be immediately after the service in Forest Lawn cemetery, Greensboro. HARPER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Danny Lee Harper, 50, of Triple H. Trail died early Monday, July 23, 2001, from a tractor accident at his home. He is survived by a daughter Millissa Lucinda Harper of Palm Desert, Calif.; his mother and father, Jessie and Irene Harper of the home; a brother, Donald W. (Doret) Harper of Faulkville, Ala.; a sister, Vicky (Ray) Luper of Clemmons; four nieces, Terri (Doran) Perkins and children, Brandon, Taylor, Jesse, Austin and Owen, Angela (Alan) Harsey and Hannah and Cindy Luper, all of Clemmons, Misty (Chris) Mayo and Noah of Nashville, Tenn.; a nephew, Donald J. Harper of Cummings, Ga.; two close aunts and an uncle, Betty Harper and Ellon and Johnny Howard; cousin Jamie Harper of Mocksville; and several other aunts, uncles and cousins. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Otis Clampitt. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel and other times at 119 Triple H Trail off Spillman Road, Mocksville. JENKINS

EMERALD ISLE - Thomas Walter Jenkins, 80, died July 23, at Carteret General Hospital. He served in World War II as a pilot in the Air Force, obtaining the rank of first lieutenant. He graduated from Clemson University with a degree in industrial engineering. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the York Rite. He retired from Armtex Inc. in Pilot Mountain in 1985 and relocated to Emerald Isle in 1995. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lassie Bridges Jenkins of Henrietta; his first wife, Coleen Talbert Jenkins; and a brother, Bobby Joe Jenkins. He is survived by his wife, Ann Jenkins; a son, Thomas Walter Jenkins II and his wife Lacy of Emerald Isle; a daughter, Catherine Smith and her husband, Randy of King; a stepdaughter, Leigh Lawrence and her husband, David, of Piedmont, S.C.; a sister, Madge Jenkins of Henrietta; sister-in-law Deborah Robertson and her husband Alan, of Mount Airy; mother-in-law Josie Marsh of Mount Airy; four grandchildren, Ingle Jenkins of Raleigh, Benjamin Jenkins of Las Vegas and Cody and Casey Smith of King; also two pets, his faithful dog and companion, Peanut, and Higgins the cat; and the many feral cats that he fed on Emerald Isle. A memorial celebration in honor of Tom's life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Robert Oltman officiating. Me-morials may be made to Cape Carteret Presbyterian Church, 100 Yaupon Drive, Cape Carteret, NC 28584. Arrangements are by Munden Funeral Home in More-head City.

LUNSFORD

Mrs. Ethel Harrell Lunsford, 87, of Alspaugh St., died Tuesday, July 24, 2001, at Springwood Care of Forsyth. Mrs. Lunsford was born in Forsyth County July 18, 1914, to Andrew J. Harrell and Celia May Harrell. She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh Lunsford; and a daughter, Betty Jean Lunsford. She is survived by two sons, Harvey Lunsford and wife Jean of Lewisville and Percy Lunsford and wife Geraldine of Rural Hall; and three stepdaughters, Hazel Smith, Ruby Spainhour and Ann Kiser, all of Stokes County. In addition, Mrs. Lunsford is survived by four grandchildren, Ric Lunsford, Cherie Young, Randy and Britt Lunsford; 10 stepgrandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with the Rev. Zeno Groce officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. MOORE

TOBACCOVILLE - Mr. Homer Lee Moore, 83, of Creek Farm Road died Tuesday, July 24, 2001. He was born July 11, 1918, in Forsyth County to Samuel A. and Effie Lillian Spainhour Moore. He was preceded in death by his wife, Earlene Puckett Moore in 1976; two sisters, Irene Bray and Ruth Bennett; and a brother, Ray H. Moore. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Roger Dale and Teresa Moore of Tobaccoville; a granddaughter, Patricia Green and great-granddaughter Taylor Ann Mercier of Walkertown; and three sisters, Evelyn Moore, Clarice Smith and Nellie Moore, all of King. He was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, with the Rev. Harry Sammons officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

NEEDHAM

CRUMPLER - Mr. Joseph Allen Needham, 77, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Ashe Memorial Hospital. Mr. Needham was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Winston-Salem to William and Lillie Hudson Needham. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army in World War II, and worked as a postmaster with the U.S. Postal Service. Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Ballou officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at the funeral home. Mr. Needham is survived by his wife, Eula Massey Needham; daughters Sandra Haile of Germanton and Vivian Needham of the home; a brother, Virgil Needham of Winston-Salem; and a grandson, Travis Haile. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

PINNIX

ELKIN - Mrs. Mozelle E. Pinnix, 84, a residence of Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin, passed away Tuesday, July 24, 2001. Mrs. Pinnix was born in Yadkin County to the late William Nathan Freeman and Mary Armstrong Freeman on Dec. 6, 1916. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alb Pinnix, and two brothers. Surviving are two sisters, Lucille Freeman Church of Roaring River and Wilma Freeman of Lewisville; a son; and two grandsons. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel.

REDDING

CLEMMONS - Mr. Richard Hicks Redding, 59, died after a valiant fight with his illness at his home Monday, July 23, 2001. He was born Oct. 15, 1941, in Forsyth County to Donald Clyde and Barbra Hicks Redding. Surviving are his wife, JoAnn Redding of the home; a daughter, Kristina Furci and husband Robert of Rockledge, Fla.; a son, Brandon Redding of the home; a grandson, Richard Reece Furci of Rockledge, Fla.; a sister, Gail Conrad of Lewisville; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens conducted by Dr. Paul Mullen. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 3409-D W. SHOAF

Mr. Charles Franklin Shoaf went to be with the Lord Monday, July 23, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Shoaf was born Jan. 18, 1920, in Forsyth County. He served in the Medical Detachment at Fort Bragg during World War II. Mr. Shoaf was president and owner of Rexan Dental Industries for over 25 years. He was a member of Immanuel Moravian Church and the Moravian Band. His wife, Gladys, of 37 years, survives him. Also surviving are two sons, Kenneth Martin Shoaf (wife Donna) of Altoona, Fla., and Charles William Minton (wife Vera) of Concord; a daughter, Jane Minton Shelton (husband Paul) of Rural Hall; four grandchildren, David Payne (wife Laura), Chandler Conkin (husband Dean), Zachary Minton and Lauren Minton; two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Braxton; and a special nephew, David Shoaf. Mr. Shoaf was a loving husband and father and a special friend to all those who had the privilege of knowing him. The family expresses special thanks to Dr. Joe E. Gaddy Jr. and the nurses on 8th General at Forsyth Medical Center, especially Terri Williams. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Carter and the Rev. Bob Peek officiating. Entombment will follow. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. YARBROUGH

Mr. Donald Richard Yarbrough, 61, died unexpectedly July 22, 2001. Mr. Yarbrough was born in Forsyth County March 12, 1940, to Walter Richard and Zelda Kinney Yarbrough. He was a sales representative for Salem Distributing Co. Mr. Yarbrough was a member of Bethania Moravian Church where he served as both the band director and the choir director. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Patricia Anne Yarbrough; two sons, William M. Yarbrough and Brian R. Yarbrough; a daughter, Rachael S. Yarbrough; his mother, Zelda Kinney Yarbrough; and three grandchildren, Jonathan Yarbrough, Benjamin Yarbrough and Cameron Yarbrough. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 26, 2001, at Bethania Moravian Church with the Rev. Charles Fishel officiating. Please stop by and take the opportunity to say goodbye to Don, and for once get in the last word. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 332 N. ALLEN

Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Hicks Allen, 82, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Springwood Care after a brief illness. She was born Jan. 27, 1919, in Forsyth County to Wiley and Nena Timmons Hicks. Mrs. Allen was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and active in the Women's Circle. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jake Allen; and two sisters, Nena Crotts and Barbara Redding. Surviving are two sons, Bill Allen and wife Kay of Winston-Salem and Todd Allen and wife Sherri of Lexington; a daughter, Pat Gray and husband Kevin of Black Mountain; and four grandchildren, Emory, Travis, Julieann and Katie. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Forsyth Memorial Park with the Rev. Dewey Griffin officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 4700 Old Walkertown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

BROWN

SANDY RIDGE - Mrs. Margaret Reid Brown, 83, of 1145 Troy Brown Road died Thursday, July 19, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Arrangements by Colonial Funeral Home in Madison.
