BRYANT

Mr. Billy Edward Bryant, 65, of Winston-Salem died Monday, July 16, 2001. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mizpah Moravian Church, con-ducted by the Rev. Jack Nance. Mr. Bryant was a native of Coffee County, Alabama, moved to Chicago, Ill., at a young age and lived in Winston-Salem for the past 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Lena A. Bryant of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Billy Edlena Bryant of Winston-Salem; nine sons, Gary Collins of Winston-Salem, Rory Bryant, David Bryant, Gary Wayne Bryant, Scott Bryant, Jeff Bryant, all of Chicago, Ron Bryant of Walkertown and Jimmy Collins and Aaron Arnder of Winston-Salem; two stepdaugh-ters; his stepmother, Frances Bryant; 11 brothers and sisters; and numerous nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

BURROW

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Kevin Burrow died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home. He was born Nov. 13, 1976, in Forsyth County. He was a graduate of South Stokes High School and employed by Lowe's Hardware, Winston-Salem. Kevin was a member of Rosebud Christian Church where he enjoyed playing all positions on their baseball team. He also enjoyed golf and Saturday night racing at 311 Race Track. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Margaret Burrow. Surviving are his mother, Cindy Thompson and husband Eddie; his father, Leon Burrow and wife Shirley; a brother, Shawn Ray Burrow; two stepsisters, Darlene and Vanessa Pate; three stepbrothers, Allen Thompson and Jerome and James Pate; maternal grandparents Phil and Bonnie White; paternal grand-father James Ray Burrow; very special friends Michelle Mabe, Jason Locke, Chris York and many others. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Bur-roughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Louis Locke officiating. Burial will follow in Corinth Church of Christ cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home and other times at his maternal grandparent's home in Germanton.

CULLER

ARARAT, Va. - Mr. Allen Benton Culler, 85, of 6557 Ararat Highway, husband of Mrs. Margie Epperson Culler, passed away on Thursday, July 19, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County in Mount Airy. Mr. Culler was born in Patrick County on March 25, 1916, son of the late Henderson Dalton Culler and Valeria Stanley Culler. Mr. Culler was retired from the City of Danville, Va., Electrical Department, Pinnacles of Dan, and was a veteran of the U. S. Army having served during World War II. He was a member of Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Margie Epperson Culler of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Angelie and Roy Cassell of Meadows of Dan, Va.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Micheal Allen and Bonnie Culler of Winston Salem, and Benton Alton and Katrina Culler of Ararat, Va.; five grandchildren, Jana Kaye Bush, Dewayne Cassell, Kimberly Ann Culler, Susan Culler Norman and Michael Dalton Culler, two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Bush and Kyle Bush; three sisters, Mecie Terry of Meadows of Dan, Va., Reva Painter of Hillsville, Va., and Mary Jessup of Meadows of Dan, Va. In addition to his parents, Mr. Culler was preceded in death by a son, Stanford Dalton Culler, and by a sister, Wavie Kimble. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at Red Bank Primitive Baptist Church with services conducted by Elders Alan Terry and John Calhoun, and the Rev. Roland McCraw. Burial will follow in the Culler Family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where his body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

DEAL

Mrs. Nancy Fisher Deal, 80, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born June 26, 1921, in Forsyth County, the eighth of nine children, to O.H. and Mittie Yokley Fisher. She graduated from South High School in 1937 at the age of 15. She was very active in sports and cheerleading. Mrs. Deal's work included legal secretary, credit manager at Montaldo's, secretary to the Director of Nursing at North Carolina Baptist Hospital, and homemaker. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines for several years, and a lifelong member of Trinity Moravian Church. Preceding her in death were her husband of 50 years J.D. Deal; a granddaughter, Robin Russell; brothers, William and O.H. Fisher Jr.; and sisters, Grace Medearis, Alberta Waggoner and Margaret Anderson. Surviving are two daughters, Patsy Morris and husband Toby of Raleigh, and Bonnie Russell and husband Pat of Winston-Salem; four grand-children, Skip Morris of Golds-boro, Michael Morris of Raleigh, Angie Heath of Advance, and Patrick Russell of Greensboro; five great-grandchildren, Jordan, Curran and Jamie Morris of Golds-boro, and Brooke Padgett and Ryan Heath of Advance; two sisters, Dixie Houston and Cleve Peelle of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jack Fisher of Winston-Salem; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Moravian Church with the Revs. Patricia F. Garner and John G. Rights officiating. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Donations may be made to Trinity Moravian Church/Building Fund, 220 E. HAGY

George L. Hagy Jr., 73, passed away July 19, 2001. He was born Jan. 5, 1928, in San Antonio, Texas, and attended Alamo Heights High School and Principia University. He lived most of the life in San Antonio until 1995, when he relocated to Winston-Salem to be near one of his sons. Mr. Hagy owned a swimming-pool contracting and maintenance company, and was a wonderful and devoted father to his four children. He had many interests in life, among them fishing, building and renovating, auto racing, boating and movies. He was quite a colorful character and relished being unique in personality, which made him very popular with friends and strangers alike. Mr. Hagy is survived by his four children, Larry Hagy of San Antonio; Holly Hagy of Los Angeles; Rick Hagy of Abbeville, La.; and George Hagy III of Winston-Salem. He is loved very much and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center in Winston-Salem, or to the charity of the donor's choice. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Memorial Funeral Chapel, 5980 Kinney Road.

HEPLER

CLEMMONS - Mr. Joe Edgar "Ed" Hepler Jr., 93, of Harper Road, beloved father, husband and friend to many who knew him, died Thursday July 19, 2001, at Clemmons Village. He was born May 19, 1908, in Forsyth County to Joe Edgar Hepler and Coral Catherine Ragland Hepler. He retired from Hanes Knitting after 47 years of service as a supervisor. Mr. Hepler was a longtime member of Warners Chapel Church of Christ. He loved to sing, eat and entertain his friends. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Clarence P. Hepler and Fred A. Hepler. Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Evola Harper Hepler; two daughters, Grace Hepler of Clemmons and Mary H. Keiger of Midway; a grandson, Gene Keiger; and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Warners Chapel Church of Christ with Denton Landon officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. JACOBS

Mother Celia B. Jacobs, affectionately known as "Candy Lady" and "Alligator," of 1400 Williamson St. was born in Seneca, S.C., to the late Pink and Asia Brownlee Dendy. She was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of her life, where she was a retiree of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where she was a former member of the senior choir, former youth department head, Sunday school teacher, and former supper supervisor of the Good News Club. In the community Mother Jacobs was active in the Friendly Twelve Flower Club and the Morning Star Senior Citizens until experiencing declining health. She was predeceased by her spouse, Ivory Jacobs. Mother Jacobs' earthly pilgrimage ended Tuesday afternoon, July 17, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following a lengthy illness. Left to cherish fond memories are a son, James Benson; two daughters, Overseer Sharon (Ralph) Turner, all of Winston-Salem and Maria Rutherford of the home; nine grandchildren including devoted grandchildren Corey and Brandon Rutherford, both of the home; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Geneva Jeffrey of Clemmons and Arizona B. Kindle of the home; four brothers, James W. (Geneva) Dendy, Thomas E. (Lena) Benson, Joseph (Mary) Dendy, and Clifton Junior Benson, all of Winston-Salem; her godmother, Eva Goodine; goddaughters Deborah E. Smith and Angela Haney; a brother-in-law, Milton Vaughn Sr., all of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, at Morning Star Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Salley officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. (Hooper)

JOYCE

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Joseph Otis Joyce, 68, of 600 Broad St. died July 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, at New London Progressive Primitive Baptist Church in Walnut Cove with elder R.A. Hairston officiating. Burial will be in Fairview cemetery. He was a native of Stokes County, and a member and deacon of New London Progressive Primitive Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the Korean War, a graduate of N.C. A&T State University, and a retired employee of Westinghouse. He is survived by his devoted wife, Martha Pearl Joyce of the home; daughter, Carlotta J. Smith (David) of Walnut Cove; three grandchildren, Ambreyia Smith, Dorinda Joyce, and David D'Shawn Smith; two sisters, Elnora J. Hairston and Wilma J. Lindsay of Walnut Cove; goddaughter Infiniti Penn; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the church. KIRBY

KING - The Rev. Lee Roy "Red" Kirby, 80, died Thursday, July 19, 2001. He was born July 1, 1921, in Stokes County to Arthur Lee and Ellen Hauser Kirby. Mr. Kirby served with the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving several medals including two Purple Hearts. He was the founder and pastor of Thru-Way Baptist Church in King and retired in 1985 after 15 years of service. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Viola "Jo" Welborn Kirby of the home; a daughter, Sharon (Jerry) Lawson of King; four grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Bowman of Rural Hall, Julie (Mark) Barnes of Youngsville, and Jeffrey (Joelle) Lawson and Christa (Dwayne) Broyhill, both of King; and five great-granddaughters, Maddison, Brea, Allison, India and Olyvia. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters, Ceyo, Pete, Howard, George "Bud" and Harry Kirby, and Colleen Boles and Lucille Wall. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church on Spainhour Road in King with Brother Roger Baker and Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Cornerstone Baptist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P.O. Box 136, King, NC 27021, or to the Kate B. KIRBY

KING - Mr. Willard Earl Kirby, 86, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001. He was born May 15, 1915, in Alexandria, Va., to Lee and Lula Elizabeth Coonse Kirby. Mr. Kirby served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He had been employed by Western Electric in Winston-Salem and left there to start his own business, Forsyth Welding Co. He was a member of New Hope Methodist Church. Preceding him in death was his wife, Velver Mae Creeson Kirby, in 1992; and a son, Willard E. Kirby Jr., in 1989. Surviving are his daughter, Betty Martin of King; a granddaughter, Michelle Martin (Randy) Marshall; and a great-granddaughter, Kirby Breyana' Marshall of Pilot Mountain. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King with the Rev. Bill Curry officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

LAMBERT

Gregory Karl Lambert Jr., 30, died July 18, 2001. He was employed at Wake Forest University-Baptist Medical Center as a registered nurse and nursing consultant. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served in the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm. Survivors include his wife Karla S. Lambert; his parents, Gregory K. Sr. and Jennie Lambert of Pfafftown; two sisters, Joy Bloxham of Winston-Salem, and Rene Futch of Lake City, Fla.; grandparents Karl and Rose Lambert of Orlando, Fla., and Carmine and Connie Raneri of Fort Lauderdale, Fla; and two nephews, Brandon and Wesley Boxham. After a private ceremony and cremation, a memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ardmore Moravian Church at Academy Street and Hawthorne Road. Memorials may be made in Gregory's name to the Make a Wish Foundation of Winston-Salem. "The tremendous out-pouring of sympathy and support is testimony to the impact you had on all you touched." Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

MORETZ

Gary Steve Moretz, 51, of 944 Shady Grove Church Road, died Friday, July 20, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 10, 1950, in Boone, a son of Russell and Ella Pilkington Moretz. He was employed with Milwaukee Delivery Service Inc. He was a member of Little White Baptist Church. He was married June 10, 1972, to Diana Lynn Nifong. Surviving are his wife of the home; two daughters, Mrs. Heidi Shannon Moretz Mathis and her husband Ray of Fryies Drive, Winston-Salem, and Gretchen Camille Moretz of the home; mother and stepfather Ella and Dolan Batten of Thomasville; a brother, Timmy Lewis Moretz of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Melony Dawn Batten Davis and her husband Tim and their daughter Hannah of Charlotte; a grandson, Tyler Gray Mathis; and a stepgranddaughter, Caitlin Mathis. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday in Little White Baptist Church by the Rev. Robert Walker. Graveside services will be held at 4 p.m. in Mabel United Methodist Church cemetery in Zionville. The body will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home, 10301 North N.C. Highway 109 in the Wallburg Community, until placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday. An honorary truck procession, involving Milwaukee Delivery Service, Carolina Southern Inc., D & L Construction, Hub Trucking Co. and K & R Trucking, will escort Mr. Moretz to the church. ALLEN

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Clarence R. "Weasel" Allen, 71, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Allen was born Dec. 28, 1929, in Davie County to Brack and Rena Williams Allen. He was retired from Lexington Furniture and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hubert Sam Allen; and a sister, Bobbie Robbins. Surviving are his wife, Fannie Comer Allen of the home; a son, Richard Comer and wife Kathy of North Dakota; a grandson, Briar Comer; two sisters, Faye Comer of Yadkinville and Carolyn McQuerry of Coolee-mee; a brother, Edgar Allen of Mocksville; and 14 nephews and six nieces. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, at Gentry Family Chapel, Yadkinville by the Rev. Chris Hauser and the Rev. David Maynard. Mr. Allen will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow the service in the South Oak Ridge Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, July 19, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, Highway 601 N., Yadkin-ville.

BLUM

Mrs. Sara Mitchell Blum, 96, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. The daughter of the late Jerry Luther Mitchell and Susie Moorefield Mitchell, Mrs. Blum was born April 2, 1905, in Stokes County. She was a member of Calvary Moravian Church and a former member of the Winston-Salem Women's Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph D. Blum; several sisters; and a brother. Mrs. Blum is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Alfred (Peggy) Hill of Hickory and Nancy B. Wood of High Point; a brother, Stedman Mitchell of Cullowhee; two sisters, Evelyn M. Ross of Walnut Cove and Ruth M. Sherrod of Raleigh; six grand-children; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service in God's Acre (Moravian Graveyard in Old Salem), will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Lane Sapp. Memorials may be made to Calvary Moravian Church, 600 Holly Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

BOYTE

Mrs. Roxie Drucilla Rothrock Boyte, 80, of 989 Hutton St. died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Winston-Salem, to Thomas Samuel and Elsie Peddycord Rothrock. Mrs. Boyte grew up at Christ Moravian Church, where she was very active in young people's work including the Deb's Girls Club and the YWCA. In December of 1946, she joined Green Street United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school and was a treasurer of the Women's Society. She was presently a member of Ardmore United Methodist Church. She was a 1937 graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School, where she had the highest scholastic average her senior year and was awarded the Montague Medal. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; four brothers, Tommy Rothrock, Howard Wesley "Skinny" Rothrock, Robert Rothrock and Kenneth Rothrock; and three sisters, Mae Readinger, Catherine Vickers, and Mozelle Lancaster. Survivors include her husband, A.F. Boyte of the home; two sons, Sam Boyte and wife Linda of Atlanta and Fred Boyte and wife Beth of Mooresville; a daughter, Joanna Nache and husband David of Asheville; a granddaughter, Megan Boyte of Mooresville; a brother, Elmo Rothrock and wife Reva of Raleigh; a sister, Julia Ann Dula and husband Robert of Richmond, Va.; a sister-in-law, Ruth Rothrock of Martinsville, Va.; and a host of nieces and nephews. Roxie was the matriarch of the very extended Rothrock family. She always delighted in the yearly reunion and amazed us with her family recollections. Her leadership and smiles will be missed, but we will always have the memories. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by Dr. Frank Grice. BROWN

Oliver Richard Brown, 82, of 3305 Parrish Road departed this life in the early morning hours of July 17, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born to the late Dorsey and Henrietta Mack Brown in Banks County, Georgia, and received his education in Davie County. Mr. Brown retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 38 years of service and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 48 years, Julia Page Brown; a daughter, Belinda B. Williams of Winston-Salem; and two sons, Richard D. Brown (Sandra) of Winston-Salem and Chris L. Brown of the home; a granddaughter, Tomeka Williams-Campbell (Keith) of Lawrenceville, Ga.; grandsons Travis and Torie Brown of Knoxville, Tenn; an aunt, Flora Mack of Mocksville; a niece, Brenda Ingram of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Martina Page of Oklahoma City, Okla.; brothers-in-law James Page of New York, N.Y., William Page, George Page (Odessa), the Rev. Gary N. Page (Georgeanna), the Rev. Sylvester Moser, all of Winston-Salem and Kenneth Page (Lolita) and Martin Page, both of Greensboro; and several grand-nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Gary N. Page officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. EDEN - Ruby Irene Shelton Crane, 93, of Greenwood Street died Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Eden. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens. She was born in High Point, was a member of First Presbyterian Church, was a volunteer for Brown Lung Association, and was employed by the VISTA Program and by Karastan Rug Mills for many years. She also was the owner of the Angel Beauty Salon on the Boulevard. Surviving are two daughters, Margaret Schwarz and husband Frank Schwarz of Manassas, Va., and Marie Kyle and husband Jerry Kyle of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law Janis Booth Crane of Greenville; sister-in-law Mrs. Eunice Shelton of Sandy Ridge; five grand-children; two great-grand-children; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raleigh T. Crane; a son; a grandson; her parents; three brothers; four stepbrothers; and a stepsister. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 432 Bridge St., Eden, NC 27288; or Rockingham County Library, Eden Branch, 598 S. Pierce St., Eden, NC 27288.
