GODFREY

Mrs. Dorothy Rebekah Cope Godfrey, 92, died Monday, July 16, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was born Dec. 18, 1908, in Davidson County to Robert Frank and Ellen King Cope. She lived in Lexington for many years before moving to Winston-Salem. She was married to the late William Ray Godfrey of Lexington. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Rebecca Godfrey Goforth and husband Mack M. Goforth of Winston-Salem; sisters Sophie Isley, Edna Brogdon, Selby Kinney and Pauline Ackerson; and brothers Glenn, Clyde, Robert Frank and Arthur Branson Cope. She is survived by a son, William Ray Godfrey II; a grandson, William Ray Godfrey III of Hope Mills; a granddaughter, Cathy Godfrey Noonkester and husband, Kenny; a granddaughter, Leah Noon-kester, all of Forest Hill, Md.; a sister, Ruby Cope Calloway of Asheboro; and a number of nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 22, 2001, in the chapel of Highland Presbyterian Church, Magnolia Street entrance, with Dr. Albert C. Winn officiating. Me-morials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Wins-ton-Salem, NC 27103. GRINDSTAFF

Mr. Bobby Joe Grindstaff, 63, passed away Tuesday July 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended period of illness. He was born Feb. 15, 1938, to the late Johnny Mack and Clarice Mabe Grindstaff in Henry County, Va. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps and later retired from the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office. Mr. Grindstaff was a member both of the Forsyth Masonic Lodge, AF&AM No. 707 and Oak Grove Moravian Church. He was very active in the church as long as his health permitted. He served on the board of elders, was a Sunday-school teacher, was active in the church choir and band, and led a young choral ensemble for two years in the mid-1970s. Mr. Grindstaff is survived by his wife, Sandra Gerrey Grindstaff, and a son and daughter-in-law, Baron and Alison Grindstaff, all of Winston-Salem; a sister, Betty G. Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many friends. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Oak Grove Moravian Church, with the Rev. Charles Fishel and the Rev. Jimmy Newsom Sr. officiating. Burial will be in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Oak Grove Moravian Church's Choir Fund, 120 Hammock Farm Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

GWYN

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Garfield B. Gwyn, 66, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a courageous 21/2 year battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Mr. Gwyn was born Aug. 23, 1934, in Surry County the son of Shafer E. and Daisy G. Gwyn. He served in the U.S. Army and was the owner and president of Gwyn Electrical & Plumbing Co. Inc. for 31 years. He was also an active member of Faith United Methodist Church, formerly Ogburn Memorial UMC, where he served in numerous leadership positions over the years and worked diligently in the planning and the building of the new church. He was an active member in the Exchange Club since 1977, serving as its president in 1985-86. He also was active in local, state and national electrical contractors associations, was a member of the Winston-Salem Heating and Air Conditioning Association, and was a member of the SCAN board of directors in the 1980s and the State Board of Examiners of Electrical Contractors from 1988 to 1995. At the time of his death he was serving on one of the NFPA national electrical code-making panels and on the board of directors of Arbor Acres Retire-ment Community. Mr. Gwyn was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Carol Welch Gwyn, in 1991. Surviving are his wife, Martha T. Gwyn of the home; a brother, Ralph J. Gwyn (Bea) of Pilot Mountain; three sisters, Hazel G. Tolbert (Buddy) and Rachel GH. Kirkman (Raymond), all of Mount Airy, and Shirley G. Gwyn (Clyde) of Brown Summit; father and mother-in-law Ralph and Juanita Tomlinson of Winston-Salem; stepmother Mary S. Gwyn of Mount Airy; stepbrother Don Starling (Shirley) of Cherryville; two stepsisters, Kay Hiatt (Leon) of Mount Airy and Linda Allred (Wayne) of Rural Hall; brother-in-law Harold Welch (Geraldine) of Winston-Salem; sister-in-law Mary Lou Snow (Ed) of Mount Airy; former mother-in-law Thelma Welch of Pilot Mountain; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Faith United Methodist Church, 1723 Old Griffin Road, Rural Hall, by the Rev. Gene Richardson. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel and request that any memorials be made to Faith United Methodist Church Building Fund, 1723 Old Griffin Road, Rural Hall, NC 27045; or to Exchange SCAN, 500 W. Northwest Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

PROSSER

Mrs. Florence Mable Prosser, 77, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Prosser was born Nov. 24, 1923, in Gloucester County, N.J., to Robert and Anna Harrington Peschko. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Golden Prosser Sr. in 1975. Surviving are a daughter, Christine Baker of Clemmons; three sons, Harry G. Prosser Jr. of California, John Prosser of New York and David Prosser of California; nine grand-children; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harry Peschko of California; three sisters, Mary Steinhauer and Helene Chatary of New Jersey, May Smolinski of Pennsylvania. A funeral service for Mrs. Prosser was held 2 p.m. Wednesday at Draper Memorial Chapel in Ontario, Calif. Interment followed in Bellevue cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Lung Association, 3409-D W. Wendover Ave. Greensboro, NC 27407.

SMITH

FLEETWOOD - The Rev. Marvin Crawford "Billy" Smith, 83, died Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Grassy Creek by the Rev. William S. Helms, the Rev. Rick Corneigo and the Rev. David Testerman. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Boone Family Funeral Home. The Rev. Smith was born in Columbia, S.C., on Nov. 26, 1917, to Crawford W. Smith and Anna Belle Frick Smith. He was a pastor for 491/2 years at different churches, including Landmark Baptist Church in Charlotte. He also pastored in Avery County, Watauga County and in Ashe County. His last church was Pleasant Home Baptist Church in Grassy Creek. His parents, a daughter, Tonya; and a son, Larry J. Smith, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Viola Groves Smith of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Crawford W. Smith and Warrenton of Virginia and Paul A. Smith of Fleetwood; two daughters, Gwen Chadwell, of Kingsport, Tenn. and Nancy Smith of Deep Gap; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Smith, of Asheboro; 12 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. CLEMMONS - Mr. Lester Foil Whicker, 73, died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. He was born April 29, 1928, in Forsyth County to the late Russel and Pearl Foil Whicker. Mr. Whicker was retired from Goody's Manufacturing Co. Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Beeson of Walkertown; three stepdaughters; several grandchildren, nieces and nephews; a special niece, Sharon Pulliam of Thomasville; a special nephew, Johnny Holmes of Lexington; and a special friend, Kay Keller of Clemmons. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens, with Brother Tommy Noah officiating. WILLIAMS

Mrs. Phyllis Brandon Williams, 63, of 4475 Kinnamon Road died Tuesday, July 17, 2001. She was born Dec. 17, 1938, in Yadkinville to James and Helen Brown Brandon. Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Poteat Campbell and husband Jack of Lexington; a son, Ralph Samuel Poteat Jr.; grandson Zane Grey; granddaughter Carmella Michael; and stepgrandson Roman Shay Campbell. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 20, 2001, at Flat Rock Baptist Church cemetery, Yadkinville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

YOUNG

BURLINGTON - The Rev. Irving W. Young, 90, of 1611 Ridgecrest Ave. died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center. A native of Stokes County, he was the husband of Mrs. Jane Hackney Young, who survives, and the son of Joshua N. Young and Mary Della Martin Young, both deceased. He retired as a minister from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Survivors, other than his wife of the home, include a son, Dr. Irving "Ben" Young of Pownal, Maine; a daughter, Mrs. Marilyn Y. Amick of Longwood, Fla.; a stepson, Mr. Paul L. Young of Bellevue, Mich.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Kathy Parks of Greensboro and Mrs. Lisa Varano of Endwell, N.Y.; a sister, Mrs. W.E. Bach of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Rich and Thompson Chapel by the Rev. Michael Steen-hoven. Burial was in Alamance Memorial Park. BENNETT

Mrs. Elna Marie Chitty Bennett, 82, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Salemtowne/The Moravian Retirement Community. She was born Sept. 17, 1918, in Winston-Salem to Carl N. and Pearl Rothrock Chitty. Mrs. Bennett lived all her life in the Ardmore Community at 832 Brent St. before moving to Salemtowne. She was an active member of Christ Moravian Church where she sang in the church choir and taught Sunday School. She also was a member of the Senior Friends at the church. In the late 1940s, she was a member of the Vesper Singers, a quartet featured on WAIR Radio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Morrison E. Bennett, and a sister, Georgia L. Chitty. Survivors include two daughters, Suzi B. Coram and husband, Jackie, of Winston-Salem, and Kay B. Butner and husband, Stephen, of Clemmons; two sons, John M. Bennett and wife, Judy, of Downingtown, Penn., and Carl E. Bennett and wife, Karen, of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild, and a sister, Lottie V. Chitty, of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Christ Moravian Church by Dr. Samuel B. Marks. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. BRADSHAW

Mr. John Bradshaw, 69, formerly of Riverside, Calif., died July 21, 2001, at the home of a daughter in Winston-Salem. Survivors include his mother Estelle Davis; two daughters, Aurrellia Bradshaw-Clark and her husband Henry G. Clark Jr, and Dorothy Bradshaw; a son, John Bradshaw; two sisters, Dorothy and Corenne Bradshaw; a grandson, Henry D. Clark III; and a host of friends in Riverside, Calif. A private service will be held. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

CATES

Mr. Cornelius Oscar Cates, 76, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday evening, July 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Patrick County, Va., to Homer Gray and Callie Branch Cates. Mr. Cates was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Fowler Cates. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ralph and Deborah Cates, of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Todd Cates and wife, Anna, and Marci Blake, all of Winston-Salem; a great-grandson, Zachary Cates; and a brother, Otha Cates, and a sister, Earlene Hampton, both of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown by Dr. Steve E. Craver. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

CHILDRESS

Mr. Grover Houston Childress, 75, of 2710 Melinda Drive, died Saturday evening at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Greenville, S.C., Feb. 24, 1926, to Grover Cleveland Childress and Enoree Albertson Childress. Mr. Childress served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. In 1954, he was transferred from Greenville to Winston-Salem where he had a long career with Bahnson Service Co., retiring as a road supervisor. After his retirement, he bought and sold automobiles and dealt in real estate. Preceding him in death in 1971 was his wife, Martha Kellett Childress. Surviving are his son, Daniel Houston Childress, of Lewisville; his granddaughter, Martha Annette Childress, of Mocksville; a grandson, David Houston Childress II; and a great-grandson, Austin Payne Lowery; two brothers, Lee Childress of Mocksville, and Charles Childress of Greenville, S.C.; and a sister, Alma Davis of Summerfield, S.C. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tom Wolff. Interment will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in Greenville Memorial Gardens in Greenville, S.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Miracle Hill Children's Home in Greenville, S.C.

CLODFELTER

Mrs. Selma Crews Clodfelter, 93, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, July 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Clodfelter was born Dec. 11, 1907, in Winston-Salem to Joseph Wilber and Cora Phillips Crews. She was a member of Home Moravian Church where she was active in Sunday School and the Women's Fellowship for many years. She also served as a Diener. She was a graduate of Salem Academy and Salem College. Mrs. Clodfelter taught in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Most of her teaching career was at Forest Park Elementary School. During the early 1940s and 1950s, she was a member of the Winston-Salem City School Board. She was a Girl Scout Leader for many years for Troops #1 and #12. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry B. Clodfelter, and a daughter-in-law, Sandra A. Clodfelter. Survivors include a son, H. Brown Clodfelter Jr. of Clemmons; a daughter, Diana Clodfelter Graham and husband, Maynard, of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Matt Graham and wife, Jennifer, of Winston-Salem, Molly Rucker and husband, David, of Winston-Salem, Ben Graham and wife, Jessica, of Asheville, and John Z. Clodfelter of Clemmons; and two sisters-in-law, Norrine Clodfelter of Union Cross, and Ruth Patterson and husband, Tom, of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Moravian Graveyard by Bishop J.C. Hughes and the Rev. C. Scott Venable III. The family will receive friends following the service in the Women's Parlor of Home Moravian Church. ELLERBE

Mrs. Jeanette Jackson Ellerbe, 57, of 435 Corbin St., went home peacefully Wednesday, July 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Society Hill, S.C., Nov. 10, 1943, to the late Bell Jackson and Curly Richardson. She attended Atkins High School in Winston-Salem, and was a retired employee of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in New York, N.Y., with 17 years of service. She was a devoted member of Pilgrim Church of Brooklyn, N.Y., where she served on the Nurses Board. She returned to Winston-Salem after living in New York for 40 years. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Robert and Charles Jackson. She is survived by her devoted husband of 40 years Nealie Lee Ellerbe; two daughters, Patricia and Cynthia Ellerbe; four grandsons, Donielle, Antonio, Charles and Clarence Neal of Winston-Salem; a brother, Toy Jackson (Joyce), and four sisters, Fannie Bradley, Careen Williams, and Lydia and Mattie Jackson, all of Winston-Salem; a devoted niece, Lisa Jackson of Georgia; her mother-in-law, Annie F. Ellerbe of Latta, S.C.; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 24 from the Spencer Memorial Christian Church (1410 Douglas St.) with Pastor Johnny Scott officiating. Funeral services for Mrs. Sadie Elizabeth McCarrell Grier, of 2824 Greenway Ave., will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 23, from the First Calvary Baptist church with the Rev. Samuel J. Cornelius officiating. Interment will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. (RUSSELL)

HAYDEN

Mrs. Willie Mae Dargan Hayden, 74, known to family and friends as "Cookie," of 2800 Raleigh Ave., slipped peacefully from this life into the loving arms of the Lord Thursday, July 19, 2001, at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of declining health. She was born July 6, 1927, in Darlington, S.C., the daughter of the late Fred and Flossie Dargan. She was a former employee of Reynolds Health Center for 25 years retiring in 1989. Mrs. Hayden was a faithful member of First Baptist Church and active as a member of the Deaconess Board, Ruth Missionary, Senior Citizens Group, and Couple's Ministry, and was a volunteer during the years of the Summer Adventure Camp Program. She was vice president of the Teresa Avenue Community Flower Club. Mrs. Hayden was always willing to help others when needed. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her devoted husband of 52 years Wilburn Hayden; six sons, Wilburn Hayden Jr. (Patricia) of Pittsburg, Penn., Ronald L. Hayden of Greensboro, Charles L. Hayden of Brooklyn, N.Y., Gerald Ray Hayden (Christy) of Virginia Beach, Va., and Douglas Van Hayden and Craig Kent Hayden, both of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; two sisters, Roberta (John) Thomas of Philadelphia, Penn., and Benzena Purvis of Winston-Salem; a brother, Junius Dargan of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Earlene Thomas of Newark, N.J.; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services will be held at noon Tuesday, July 24, at the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wendell A. Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. The family is grateful for the loving care provided to "Cookie" by a number of caregivers during her declining health. ELKIN - Mr. Woodrow Western Wiley Hooper, 87, our precious Dad and Poppie, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 21, 2001. Mr. Hooper was born Feb. 4, 1914, in Jackson County to Walter and Mabel Hooper. Mr. Hooper retired from Chatham Manufacturing and Elkin City Schools. He was a member and deacon of Macedonia Baptist Church. Mr. Hooper was an avid farmer and beekeeper. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hooper was preceded in death by his first wife of 42 years, Ruth Buelin Hooper, eight sisters and three brothers. Survivors include his wife Stella Cothern Hooper of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila Gayle (Frank) Hinson of State Road; a son and daughter-in-law, Ronald Dale (Patricia) Hooper of Greensboro; four grandchildren and spouses, Melissa (Larry) Culler, Bryan Hinson, Heath (Carly) Hooper, and Clay Hooper; three great-grandchildren, Dylan Culler, and Christy and Cole Hinson; a brother, Truman Hooper; three sisters, Lillian Aldridge, Mozelle Jones, and Edna McClure; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, at Macedonia Baptist Church with the Revs. Joel Blevins, Michael Darnell, and Jim Holbrook officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hugh Chatham Memorial Foundation, or to Hospice of Surry County.
