MOODY

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Roger Wesley Moody, 65, of 154 West Poplar St. in Mount Airy, husband of Sue Faw Moody, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Moody was born in Surry County June 18, 1936, the son of the late Roger Howard and Mary Elizabeth Kingsbury Moody. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the Medical Corps, and was employed with Pike Electric for 20 years. Mr. Moody was a former member of the Mount Airy Lions Club and a member of Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. Survivors include his wife, Sue Faw Moody, of the home; a son, Roger Wesley Moody Jr., of the home; a sister and brother-in-law, June and Jerry Franks, of Mount Airy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Gary and Deborah Moody, of Clover, SC., and Philip and Deborah Moody, of Pfafftown; a brother-in-law, the Rev. Arnold Faw, of Graham; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Peggy and James Martin, of Mount Airy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Moody was preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald Lee Moody; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Howard and Lillian Faw; and two sisters-in-law, Linda Faw and Faye Faw. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 22 at Haymore Memorial Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Robert McCrary, with burial in Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Haymore Memorial Baptist Church, P.O. PALMER

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Barbara Saunders Palmer, 69, of Stoney Point Road died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Palmer was born Oct. 29, 1931, the daughter of the late James D. and Mabel Farris Saunders. She was a member of Baux Mountain Baptist Church and was active in the church choir while health permitted. Mrs. Palmer was a member of the Walkertown Little League Boosters Club and had been a coach with the Walkertown Wolfpack Cheerleaders. She was a graduate of Mineral Springs High School. Mrs. Palmer was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Jack Laurence Palmer of the home; two sons, Gary Palmer of Walkertown, and Jack Palmer of King; and five grandchildren, Melissa Palmer, D. Palmer, Stacey Lynch, Tyler Palmer and Cassidy Palmer. Mrs. Palmer was preceded in death by a son, Mark Palmer; and a sister, Jimmie Lee Swain. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Baux Mountain Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Hutchings. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. SPILLMAN

EAST BEND - Mrs. Edith Speer Spillman, 90, of 3629 Baltimore Road died Sunday morning, Aug. 19, 2001, at her granddaughter Sharon Pendry's home. She was born in Yadkin County on Sept. 21, 1910, to Louis and Celie Lee Hunter Speer. She was a member of Stony Knoll United Methodist Church. Mrs. Spillman was a special wife, mother, grand-mother and sister. Mrs. Spillman was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Franklin Spillman. Surviving are two daughters, Laura (Richard) Davis of East Bend, and Treva Vestal of Yadkinville; a very special son, Rex Hobson of East Bend; a sister, Elvina Brann of East Bend; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ben Shepherd. Burial will follow in the Stony Knoll Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend and at other times at the home of Sharon Pendry (1717 Richmond Hill Church Road, Boonville, NC 27011).

STOKER

ELKIN - Mrs. Hallie Barker Stoker, 81, of Stoker Lane passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Stoker was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Wilkes County to Noah and Maude Cockerham Barker. Mrs. Stoker retired from Sunbeam Corp. and attended The Way, The Truth, and The Life Home Meetings. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harley Stoker, and a daughter, Jane Ann Stoker. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Barry Gray and Judy Stoker of Elkin; two daughters and a son-in-law, Phyllis Beach of Elkin, and Betsy and Roger Cockerham of State Road; three brothers, Harold Barker of Jonesville, George Barker of Elkin, and Milo Barker of Lexington; four sisters, Louise Tilley of Elkin, Grace Johnson of Jonesville, Betty Cockerham of Elkin, and Della Dimmette of Ronda; five grandchildren, Christel Wilmoth, Monica Norman, Cindy Beach, Kelly (Barry) Byrd, and Holly Stroud; and three great-grandchildren, Brandon Wilmoth, Stephen Wilmoth, and Jade Norman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by Tom Nussbaum, Slade Blend, and Charlie Kerr. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice of Surry County.

ABBOTT

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Isaac Mason Abbott, 76, died Friday at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Danbury. Mr. Abbott was born March 10, 1925, in Stokes County to the late Isaac F. and Susanna Martin Abbott. He was retired from Fieldcrest and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Abbott was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He enjoyed his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild very much. He is survived by three children, Carolyn Abbott Clemmons of Oak Ridge, Richard Abbott of Walnut Cove, and Rica Abbott of Rural Hall; three grandchildren, Jarrad Abbott, Brianna Clemmons, and Christopher Abbott; and a great-grandchild, Madison Abbott. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church. Pastor Keith Heitman will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Burroughs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church, 3035 NC Hwy. 8 South, Walnut Cove, NC 27052.

ALBEA

MOORESVILLE - Mrs. Doris "Dot" Elledge Albea, 84, a former resident of 121 East Memorial Highway in Harmony and of Eden Gardens in Mooresville, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Genesis Elder Center in Mooresville following a period of declining health. Mrs. Albea was born in Wilkes County July 1, 1917, a daughter of the late Elijah and Nancy Hayes Elledge. She was owner and operator of a beauty shop and worked in the office of Duke Power Co. in Harmony for a number of years. She was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church and of the Eastern Star. She was married to Fred Albea, who died Sept. 4, 1998. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Ruth Wagoner and husband C.J. of 530 Briarwood Drive in Mooresville, and two nephews, David Wagoner of Mooresville, and Derwin Wagoner of Mint Hill. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at Harmony cemetery. Officiating will be the Revs. Nick Rochester and Donnie Durham. The body will remain at Reavis Funeral Home in Statesville until the funeral hour. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to Harmony United Methodist Church, 136 West Memorial Highway, Harmony, NC 28634. Reavis Funeral Home in Statesville is serving the family of Mrs. Albea.

BYRD

RONDA - Mr. Charlie Arnie "Arn" Byrd, 94, of Luffman Road passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Britthaven of Wilkesboro. Mr. Byrd was born April 21, 1907, in Wilkes County to Sanford Merideth and Eunice Coetta Adams Byrd. Mr. Byrd was a sawmill operator and farmer, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Harvey Eugene Byrd, Ernest Lytle "Dick" Byrd, and Samuel Quintin Byrd; and a sister, Mallie Louise Byrd. Survivors include a sister, Mary Byrd Carter of Ronda; five special nieces and nephews, Terry Everette Carter and Garry Lee Carter, both of Ronda, Loretta Carter Cooper of Elkin, Marilyn Carter Calhoun of Walnut Cove, and Rosa Carter Davis of Jonesville, and several other nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at Macedonia Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Byrd will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.

DIXON

Mr. Woodrow Gilmer Dixon, 87, of 349 Strickland Ave. died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. He was born June 16, 1914, in Guilford County to John W. and Hattie Carroll Dixon. Mr. Dixon was a member of Unity Baptist Church and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel T. Dixon. Survivors include a son, James W. Dixon of the home; a granddaughter, Gina Hopkins of Lexington; a grandson, James Darren Dixon and wife Paula S. of Thomasville; two great-grandchildren, Nicole Ward and Matthew Bullock of Lexington; and a brother, Phillip Dixon and wife Irene of Summerfield. Mr. Dixon was looking forward to the birth of his third great-grandchild. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Nathan Parrish. There will be no formal visitation, however friends may call at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HEDGECOCK

NEW BERN - Mr. Delos Samuel "Sam" Hedgecock Jr., 71, of 805 Taberna Circle died Aug. 2, 2001, at Craven Regional Hospital. He was born June 26, 1930, in Guilford County, the son of Delos Samuel and Mary Lee Wood Hedgecock. He graduated from Oak Ridge military Academy and had been a resident of New London, N.C., before moving to New Bern. He retired as president and treasurer of Hedgecock Builders Supply of High Point on May 1, 1992, after 39 years of service. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and was a member of Riverdale United Methodist Church. He was an avid offshore fisherman and golfer. Some of his happiest moments were seeing the sunrise as he headed out to sea in search of the big one. He had a great love for his God and family. On May 31, 1957, he married the former Iris Ivey, who survives of the home. Also surviving are two daughters, Deborah Elaine Hedgecock of Denton and Pamela Dee Carter of High Point; a son, Delos Samuel Hedgecock III of Norwood; two sisters, Arlene H. Guy and Margaret H. Davis, both of High Point; two brothers, Robert W. Hedgecock of Lexington and Jasper L. Hedgecock of Walnut Cove; and four grandchildren, Uriel, Anna Marie, Morgan and Cassandra. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Sechrest Funeral Home Chapel in High Point by the Revs. Bill Sherman and Derald Smith. Burial will be at Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery in High Point. Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mr. Hedgecock's sister, Arlene H. Guy (934 Gallimore Dairy Road in High Point). A memorial service also will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10 at Riverdale United Methodist Church in New Bern. Memorials may be made to Riverdale United Methodist Church, 5195 U.S. 70 East. LAURENCE

ATLANTIC BEACH, Fla. - Fred Siewers "Pete" Laurence III passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, after a lengthy illness. Born Sept. 5, 1936, to the late Fred S. Laurence Jr. and Julia Cash Laurence, Pete grew up in Winston-Salem and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1955. In 1953, he was the starting guard on the R.J. Reynolds football team that won the first state championship in the school's history. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy and trained as a submariner in New London, Conn. He served aboard the USS Corporal stationed in Key West, Fla., for three years. He then attended the University of South Carolina and in 1960 began his career in the lumber industry with Georgia Pacific Corp. For the past 25 years, he has lived in the Jacksonville, Fla., area, working here as an independent lumber broker associated with Knight Lumber of Atlanta, Ga. An avid tennis player, fisherman and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Tarheel basketball fan, Pete approached life with enthusiasm and optimism. The challenges presented by health problems in recent years never dampened his indomitable spirit, and he was an inspiration to many. He is survived by his wife, Patricia Underwood Laurence of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; two children, Harriet L. (Steve) Brown of Greenville, Pa., and Fred S. Laurence IV of Boston, Mass.; sisters, Harriet Laurence of Highlands, and Julie L. (Jim) Wilson of Winston-Salem; brothers, Frank C. (Donna) Laurence of Victoria, Texas, and Louis E. Laurence of Augusta, Ga.; and two granddaughters, Hunter and Haley Brown of Greenville, Pa. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Quinn-Shalz Funeral Home in Jacksonville Beach, Fla. EDEN - Mr. Joe Alvis Lawson, 51, of 1016 Center Church Road, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at his home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Lawson Cabin. Mr. Lawson was born in Patrick County, Va. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Eden, a member of Union Local 317T BCTGM, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his father James Willie Lawson; a brother, Thomas Lawson; and his father-in-law, J. Harold Manuel. Mrs. Shirley Ann Lawson, 62, died Thursday, August 2, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice. She was born June 1, 1939, in Forsyth County to Clyde and Kathleen Sykes Dickey. Mrs. Lawson was a member of First Assembly of God in Winston-Salem. Surviving are her husband Tommy J. Lawson of Winston-Salem; her mother Kathleen Sykes of Winston-Salem; four daughters, Kathy Lewis and husband Gary, and Sharon Shelton and husband Jackie, all of Walkertown, Brenda Zrinski of Clemmons, and Vicki Whitaker and husband Darin of Kernersville; two sons, Rickey Lawson and wife Audrey of Wallburg, and Bruce Lawson of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Shelby Fulk and husband Jeep of Winston-Salem, Nancy Whitaker and husband Lacy of Winston-Salem, and Lisa Maddie and husband Cary of Florida; one brother, James Dickey and wife Judy of Florida, 10 grandchildren, Valeria Worley and husband Brian, Kimberly Shelton, Daniel Dockery, Christine Zrinski, Brittany Whitaker, Rachael Whitaker, Rickey Leigh Lawson, Jason Lawson, Tracy Lawson, and Jessica Lawson; and one great-grandson, Josh Worley. PATTERSON

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Mr. Thomas Alfred Patterson, 90, of 180 Davis Road, husband of the late Icie Alexander Patterson, died Saturday, Aug. 4, 2001, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center. Mr. Patterson as born Oct. 25, 1910, in Rockingham County, a son of the late Joe Patterson and Josephine Lester Patterson. He was retired from Pulaski Furniture Co., where he had worked for 46 years. He was a lifetime member of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Men's Bible Class. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Snead. He is survived by two daughters, Jean Moore of Martinsville, Va., and Linda Lineberry of Winston-Salem; two sons, Donald Patterson of Stanleytown, Va., and William "Bill" Patterson of Martinsville, Va.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6 at Collins Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Hannah Glisson will officiate. Interment will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Collins Funeral Chapel. MOUNT AIRY - Mr. James Garfield Simmons, 80, of 210 Shropshire Lane, husband of Opal Holder Simmons, died Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Howell Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

STEVENS

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Charlie Lawrence Stevens, 75, died Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born March 22, 1926, in Stokes County to Robert W. and Bezzie Nelson Stevens. Mr. Stevens attended Morris Chapel United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Robert West Sunday school class. He retired from Adams Millis Co. in 1993 after 45 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Grady, Harvey and Roosevelt Stevens. Surviving are his wife, Odessa Dillon Stevens of the home; a son, Johnny L. Stevens and wife Ann of Walkertown; a grandson, Dylan Stevens; and three sisters, Margaret Harris and Pauline Beck, both of Winston-Salem, and Beulah James and husband Rufus of Kernersville. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Monday at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Brian M. Crady and Mr. Don Whicker officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Stevens will lie in state at the church from 1:30 to 2 p.m. prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Chapel in Kernersville. JONESVILLE - Leona Redding Swaim, 99, of Swan Creek Road, passed away Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Yadkin Heritage Care Center. She was born August 5, 1901, in Wilkes County to the late Marcus and Dora Shore Redding. Mrs. Swaim was a homemaker and loved her flowers, garden, and strawberry patch, which she loved to share with her friends and neighbors. Mrs. Swaim was the oldest member of Swan Creek Baptist Church. Surviving are her two sons, Phelix (Pauline) Swaim of Jonesville, and Harvey Lee Swaim Jr. of Atlantic Beach; three grandchildren, Patsy Alene Swaim Flynn, Lee Swaim, and Nikki Whitley; four great-grandchildren, Audra Coleman, Joseph Rook, David Flynn, and Cynthia Williams; and a great-great-grandchild, Jacob Rook. Mrs. Swaim was preceded in death by her husband Harvey Lee Swaim; three brothers, Carl Redding, Letcher Redding and Marcus Redding; one half-sister, Ethel Money; and her half-brother, Clarence Money. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Swan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Nat Thompson. She will lie in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville.
