TYNDALL

Mr. R. Winfred Tyndall, 80, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. Mr. Tyndall was born in Durham County on June 10, 1921, to Matthew Ovide and Myrtle Elmore Tilley Tyndall. He was executive director of Family Services Inc. for 25 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of Wake Forest Baptist Church, N.A.S.W., and a former member of the Kiwanis Club. Surviving are his wife, Esther Bodenhamer Tyndall; two daughters, Valinda T. Jones and husband Hayes, Jr., and Judy T. Vaught and husband Rick H.; a son, Rommie W. Tyndall Jr. and wife Sherry W.; five grandchildren, Ashley Brewer, Hayes Jones, Nic Tyndall, Kacee Vaught, and Lynnee Vaught; and a sister, Scenie Vestal. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel conducted by the Rev. Johnson Gupton. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Funeral Home on Reynolda Road, and requests memorials be made to Family Services Inc., 610 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-5325.

WADFORD

KING - Mrs. Georgia Childress Wadford, 83, of 649 W. Dalton Road, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Feb. 22, 1918, in Forsyth County to the late George and Stella Russell Childress. Mrs. Wadford retired from Western Electric after 23 years' service. She was of the Methodist faith. Her husband, Alvin Clarence Wadford, and a son, Tom Wadford, preceded her in death. She is survived by three sons, Gary Wadford Sr. of Advance, Ronald Wadford of Key West, Fla., and Jack Wadford of King. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 in Woodland cemetery with Mr. Bill Teague officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

WINTERS

JONESVILLE - Mr. Herbert Edison Winters, 72, of Simmons-Patton Road, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2001, at Hoots Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Yadkin County to the late Earl L. and Mary Lilly Wagoner Winters. Mr. Winters was retired from Unifi, Inc., was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy. He was preceded in death by his sister, Alma Cox, and by a brother, Dale Winters. Surviving are his wife of 45 years Katie Brown Winters, of the home; four children, Robin Edison (Cynthia) Winters, and Beverly (William) Eckard, all of Boonville, Karen (Scott) Spencer of State Road, and Sonya (Bobby) Renegar of Boonville; grand-children, Kimberly Eckard, Rebecca Eckard, Sierra Winters, Brendan Spencer, and Kadon Renegar; and two sisters, Georgie Bryant of Boonville, and Ezlee Harpe of Winston-Salem. His funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Shady Grove Baptist Church by the Revs. Paul Stewart, Kenny Pardue, and James Pulley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Little Mountain Road in Jonesville. WOODRUFF

GLADE VALLEY - Mr. Paul Woodruff, 88, of 394 Camp Butler Road, died Saturday morning, Aug. 4, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem. He was a resident of Meadowbrook Manor Nursing Home in Clemmons. Mr. Woodruff was born in Alleghany County, May 16, 1913, the youngest of nine children born to James Frank and Olivia Cockerham Woodruff. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife, Grace Gentry Woodruff of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Adron and Ruby Woodruff of Lewisville, and Franklin and Carol Woodruff of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Clara and Kenneth Pruitt of Winston-Salem, Norma and Clayton Brooks of Clemmons, and Pauline and Bruce Shepherd of Lewisville; seven grandchildren and spouses, Danny and Betty Woodruff of Kentucky, Steve Brooks of Durham, Catherine and Dale Stancil of Winston-Salem, Jennifer and Matthew Hagen of Morehead City, Janet and James Carnell of Raleigh, Jonathan Paul Shepherd of Chapel Hill, and Megan Shepherd of Chapel Hill; four great-grandchildren, Bruce and Melissa Woodruff, and Lawson and Paul Stancil. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Elder Don Richardson, Mrs. Peggy Woodruff and Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. Burial will follow in the Woodruff Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 5, at Grandview Memorial Funeral Home in Sparta. ADAMS

Mrs. Lillian Barksdale Adams, 103, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. Mrs. Adams was born July 21, 1898, in Leaksville, to James T. and Roxanna Haley Barksdale. On April 21, 1925, she was married to John F. Adams who passed away in 1992. Mrs. Adams worked in the office of Marshall-Field Co. for a number of years. She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary and also the American Legion and Veterans of World War I. In addition, she was a member of the Ardmore-Buena Vista Garden Club and the Golden Age Senior Citizens Club. Mrs. Adams was a member of First Christian Church for more than 60 years and was active until she was 90+ years old. Mrs. Adams is survived by three sons, J. Frank Adams of Roanoke, Va., James B. Adams of Winston-Salem and Robert T. Adams of Pinelas Park, Fla.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Marquerite B. Walker of Eden and Doris B. Tillman of Wilmington, Del. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road with the Rev. James Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. in Taylor Hall prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

BASKINS

GEORGETOWN, S.C. - Mr. Isaiah Baskins Jr., 74, of 611 Dawson St. departed this life Thursday, Aug. 2, 2001, at the Georgetown Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Isaiah Baskins and Precious Baldwin born May 29, 1924, in Lancaster, S.C. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Richard Jenkins, Robert Baskins and James Baskins, all of Winston-Salem; four daughters, Henretta Baskins of Lancaster, S.C., Thelma Brown (Eddie), Theressa Caesar (Carl) of Georgetown and Vondell Bryant of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren, Lorrienna Baskins, LaShae' Baskins, Javon Baskins, Bailey Virgil, Isaiah Baskins, Isaac Bryant Jr., Joshua Bryant and two very devoted grandchildren that he reared in the home, Antonia "Sunshine" Bryant and Timothy Washington; a sister, Ann Lee Baldwin of Winston-Salem; a brother, Samuel Baskins of Lancaster; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bernard Walker officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. DOBBINS

HAMPTONVILLE - Mr. Weldon Odean Dobbins, 61, of Somers Road passed away at his home. He was born Jan. 14, 1940, in Yadkin County to Nelson Eugene and Lydia Stokes Dobbins. Mr. Dobbins was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Germany from 1962 to 1966. He was preceded in death by his father, Nelson E. Dobbins. Surviving are his mother, Lydia Stokes Dobbins of Hamptonville; his three children, Johnny Q. Dobbins and Melissa D. Snow, both of State Road, and Ricky Dobbins of Hickory; a sister, Vickie Dobbins of Atlanta, Ga.; and three brothers, Jimmy R. Dobbins of Jonesville, Larry N. (Patty) Dobbins of Florida. and Benny (Carol) Dobbins of Jonesville. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednes-day at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Joe Souther. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service on Wednesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Veterans Administration.

FOSTER

Mrs. Ruby Groce Foster, 82, passed away at her home Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001. She was born July 4, 1919, in Yadkin County to Daniel Webster and Emma Rutledge Groce. She attended Yadkin County schools and was employed at Hanes Knitting and ARA Food Services. She was a faithful member of Woodland Baptist Church for 60 years. Mrs. Foster sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, member of the Men and Mothers Class, and Seniors for Christ. For many years, she visited patients and sang with the Woodland Group Singers at various rest homes, especially Knollwood Hall and Springwood Care Center. Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Howard Groce; and a sister, Marnie Groce Rhodes. She is survived by her husband of 62 years and 10 months, William F. "Bill" Foster; two sons, W. Eugene Foster and wife Barbara Jones Foster, and Robert L. Foster; two grandsons, Brandon and Dustin Foster; a granddaughter, Tiffany Foster; a sister, Adelene Groce Rhodes; two brothers, the Rev. R. Zeno Groce and wife Helen Hicks Groce, and Charles B. "Skeet" Groce and wife Kathleen VanHorn Groce; a sister-in-law, Clara Long Foster; and several nieces and nephews. She was dearly loved by everyone who knew her. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7 at Woodland Baptist Church with the Revs. R. Zeno Groce and Tim Gammons officiating. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. FULP

WESTFIELD - Mr. James Otis Fulp, 77, of 1676 Ray Loop Road, a sweet loving father, has gone home to be with the Lord Aug. 6, 2001, at this home. He was a hard-working, dedicated Christian who was loved by all those who knew him. Mr. Fulp will be greatly missed by his children and friends alike. He was born in Stokes County Feb. 25, 1924, to the late James Edgar and Cattie Bullins Fulp. Mr. Fulp served in the Army during World War II, was a deacon and a member of Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church and served on the board of directors of Old Belt Farmers Co-Op. Mr. Fulp is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Donnie and Susie Rogers and Donnie and Vickie Benge, all of Westfield, Kevin and Joan Saunders if Danbury and David and Helen Mitchell of Westfield; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Terry Fulp of King, Jimmy Fulp of Westfield and Junior and Jacqueline Fulp of King; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Hoover Whitt of Danbury; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John Carson and Carrie Fulp of Danbury, Allie Ray and Vernell Fulp of Lawsonville and William "Jabo" and Ardina Fulp of Danbury. In addition to his parents, Mr. Fulp was preceded in death by a son, Jackie Lane Fulp; and a brother Silas Fulp. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Howell Funeral Chapel in Pilot Mountain conducted by elder David Edwards and the Rev. Jack Anderson. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Big Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Viewing for Mr. Fulp will be Tuesday from noon to 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home in Pilot Mountain. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, NC 27016.

GATES

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. George Davis Gates Sr., 77, of 1804 Aimes Ave., husband of Judith A. Gates, passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Gates was born in Patrick County, Va., Sept. 6, 1923, to the late George Dodson and Genola Davis Gates. He was retired from the U.S. Army after 21 years of service, having served during World War II and the Korean Conflict with a rank of chief warrant officer third grade. Mr. Gates was also the youngest first sergeant in the South Pacific Command during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Judith A. Gates of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary C. and Dwight Coleman of Marietta, Ga.; three sons and daughters-in-law, George Jr. and Linda Gates of Marietta, Ga., Charles C and Ronda Gates of Lowgap and Raymond T. and Karen Gates of Yadkinville; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, John L. and Esther Gates of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the Holy Angels Catholic Church with services conducted by Father Eric Kowalski. Entombment will follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. Full military honors will be conducted by Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division stationed in Fort Bragg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday night at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where there will be a wake service conducted by Father Eric Kowalski at 7:15 p.m. The family will also receive friends at the Duncan Center behind Holy Angels Catholic Church after the entombment at Skyline Memory Gardens on Wednesday.

HARDWICKE

DARLINGTON, Md. - A funeral service for Mary Bunker Hardwicke, mother, grandmother and homemaker, who died at Maryland Shock Trauma Center after an automobile accident near Webster, Md., will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2001, at Darlington Grace Union Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at Darlington cemetery. Mary Bunker was born in the Panama Canal Zone Aug. 8, 1928. Her father was an engineer in the early days of the building of the Panama Canal. The family returned to their home in Winston-Salem in 1943, and in 1949 Mary married John Hardwicke who was then teaching high school in the public schools of North Carolina. The following year the Hardwickes moved to Washington, D.C. where Mr. Hardwicke entered law school and in 1954 the Hardwickes moved to Harford County, Md. where they raised their six children. They first lived in the Wilna area of the county, followed by 24 years in Webster, near Havre De Grace, and since 1989 they have resided in Darlington. Mary will be remembered by family and friends as the consummate mother and grandmother, a loving and deeply caring person who was the center of her extended family, friend to all, confidante to many. Her warmth drew even those who met her only briefly. Her friends will remember Mary as someone who loved children and who was loved by them. She always had hugs and presents for the children in the neighborhood and was everybody's nana. Her family will remember her as someone whose greatest joy was her 16 grandchildren and who was eagerly awaiting her 17th grandchild. She was the beloved nana to all of them as well as a beloved wife and mother. Survivors include her husband, John Hardwicke; her six children, Jill, Sandy, Christine, John, Heidi and Tim; her grandchildren; two sisters; two brothers and many nieces and nephews.

HENDRIX

CLEMMONS - Mr. Harry Francis Hendrix, 69, of Clemmons died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 22, 1932, in Davie County to Elmer and Margie Smith Hendrix. Mr. Hendrix was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Howard Hendrix of the home; two daughters, Sherry McCulloh and husband Lee of Mocksville and Lynn Thompson of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Stephan Thompson, Eric McCulloh and Matt McCulloh; a great-grandson, Ryan Thompson; a sister, Patsy Smith of Advance; and his mother of Advance. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel with the Rev. Glenn Sellers and Rev. Otis Clampitt officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. MULLER

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Henry Paul Muller, 45, died Tuesday, July 31, 2001. Mr. Muller was born in Jersey City, N.J., to Henryk and Stella Muller. He was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and a member of the U.S. Hang Gliders Association and the U.S. Ultra Light Association. Mr. Muller was a senior field-service engineer with Lumenis Ltd. His father preceded him in death. Survivors include his wife, Kim Shufran of Lewisville; a daughter, Erica Faith Muller of Lewisville; his mother, Stella Muller of Jersey City, N.J.; and his father and mother-in-law, Frank and Joan Shufran of Hobart, Ind. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church by the Rev. Conall McHugh. The family will receive friends immediately after the service at the church. The family requests that memorials be made to Our Lady of Mercy Building Fund, 1919 S. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home is serving the family.

SCOTT

Mr. Harry A. Scott Jr. passed away at Baptist Hospital Aug. 1, 2001. He was born March 24, 1945, to the late Harry and Emma Eldridge Scott. Surviving are two daughters, Keija and Tiffany Scott; two sons, Carlos Rice and Christopher Spaugh, all of Winston-Salem; a grandchild, Jaylin Scott; a brother, Carlton Eldridge; an aunt; several uncles; and cousins. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at the VA cemetery in Salisbury. A viewing will be held at 9 a.m. at Beasley's Chapel prior to the services. Professional services are implemented by Beasley's Funeral Service.

SHUMATE

Mr. Timothy Odell Shumate, 37, of 5760 Reynolda Road died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Shumate was born Dec. 1, 1963, in Winston-Salem to Travis Lee Shumate Sr. and Betty Cook Shumate who preceded him in death. He was a graduate of North Forsyth High School and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Shumate was employed as a security guard with Wackenhut Security. Surviving are a daughter, Jessica Shumate of Pfafftown; and three brothers, Michael Glenn Shumate of Lexington, Travis Lee Shumate of Winston-Salem and Johnny Rae Shumate of East Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Chapel with the Rev. Larry Walker officiating. Burial will follow in the Walnut Grove Baptist Church cemetery in North Wilkesboro at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

KING - Mr. Kenneth "Ken" Snow, a loving husband, father and grandfather, 63, of 665 W. Dalton Road, died Monday, Aug. 6, 2001. He was born Jan. 19, 1938, in Forsyth County, to John Orville and Janie Holland Snow. He was retired from the Westinghouse Corp. and had been an active member of Hope Community Church in Winston-Salem for more than 10 years, where he had touched the hearts of many, serving as an usher. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Betty Wilson Snow of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Joan Snow of Advance; a daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and Keith Fulk of Pinnacle; five grandchildren, Tara, Whitney and Tatum Snow, and Kenneth and Hannah Fulk; sisters and brothers-in-law Rachel (Raymond) McGee of Winston-Salem, Thelma (Bruce) Fulp, Ivey Smith, and Betty Thompson, all of Kernersville; brothers and sisters-in-law Raeford (Lucille) Snow, Willard (Loretta) Snow, Curtis (Dottie) Snow and David (Janice) Snow, all of Winston-Salem; a dear sister-in-law, Bonnie (Carl Ray) Rutledge of King; a brother-in-law, Bill Wilson of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a host of special nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, in the Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Mashburn, OSL, and Bishop Paul Lanier III officiating. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Annie Adams Speer, 86, of Sugartown Road passed away Sunday, Aug. 5, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center. She was born Oct. 20, 1914, in Yadkin County to the late Emmett Melton and Ora Dinkins Melton. Mrs. Speer was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Oben Adams on Jan. 22, 1974. Surviving are her husband, Luther Speer of Yadkinville; a son, Mr. Hugh (Gertrude) Adams of Yadkinville; a daughter, Mrs. Nellie (Granville) Blevins of Yadkinville; three granddaughters, Joy Adams (Jerome) Kay and Robin Blevins of Yadkinville and Karen Baker of Boonville; great-granddaughters, Jennifer Kay and Jordan Kay of Yadkinville and Brianne Baker of Boonville; two great-grandsons, Nicholas Martin and Blake Goins, both of Yadkinville; and two sisters, Ruth Frye and Etta Steelman, both of Yadkinville. Her funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. C.G. White. Burial will follow in the Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery.
