NORTH WILKESBORO - Miss Bessie Lee Call, 70, of Aaron Call Road died Friday, Sept. 7, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Miss Call was born April 27, 1931, in Wilkes County to Harrison and Lula Swaim Call. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church, North Wilkesboro. Surviving are her father, Harrison Call, of North Wilkesboro; four brothers, W.H. Call Jr., James Call and Gary Call, all of North Wilkesboro and Andrew Call, of Ronda; and three sisters, Sylvia Brown and Callie Chatham, both of North Wilkesboro, and Willie Miller, of Wilkesboro. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Flint Hill Baptist Church cemetery, North Wilkesboro with the Rev. Jackie Richardson officiating. The family will be at Miller Funeral Service, 180 Sparta Road, North Wilkesboro, from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight. The family has requested no food.

CARR

MOUNT OLIVE - Mildred Highsmith Carr, 73, of 214 Henry Carr Lane, died Thursday at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Southerland-Wells cemetery with the Rev. Archie Chapman officiating. Mrs. Carr was born in Wayne County to the late Edward Elector Highsmith and Nancy James Highsmith, and was married to the late John Henry Carr Sr. She was reared at the Odd Fellows Home where she returned for numerous activities and reunions over the years. She was a member of Mount Olive Presbyterian Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, John Henry Jr. and Shing Carr, of Mount Olive; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean C. Eastwood, of Lewisville, Patricia Ann C. and Alan Michael, of Juneau, Alaska, and Mary C. and Alan Smith, of Kernersville; a sister, Eunice H. Chapman, of Lawndale; five grandchildren, Brittany Carr, Justin Carr, Christopher Eastwood, Jonathan Eastwood and Laurel Anna Carr-Michael; and a great-grandchild, Kyah Eastwood. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home and Saturday at the home following the graveside service. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Odd Fellows Scholarship Fund, c/o Harold Caudill, 1025 Coulwood Drive, Charlotte, NC, 28214.

CARTER

MADISON - Mr. William Fletcher Carter, 89, of Walnut Cove Health Care Center died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Carter was a lifelong resident of Stokes County, was retired from Burlington Industries Inc. and was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Della Marie Knight Carter; his parents, William and Bettie Francis Carter; two sisters, Lillie Bell Carter Bostic and Lolene Amos; and a brother, James Grover Carter. Survivors include a son, Jimmy Carter, and wife, Martha, of Madison; daughters Treva Etchison, and husband, John, of Maryland and Mildred Martin, and husband, Larry, of Mayodan; grandchildren Mark Carter and wife Sara of Madison and Lisa Hill and husband Robert of Mayodan; and a great-grandson, Bobby Hill. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home and other times at 1135 Troy Joyce Road, Madison.

CHILDRESS

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Elbert Eugene Childress, 77, of 497 Fireside Lane, the husband of Patty Sechrist Childress, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Childress was born in Surry County Jan. 22, 1924, the son of the late George and Alice Goins Childress. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II, and was retired from Quality Mills after 38 years of service. Mr. Childress was also a member of Laurel Bluff Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Patty Sechrist Childress, of the home; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Faye and Jim Smolder, of Kernersville, Susan and John Arnett, of Mount Airy, April Childress, of the home and Rita Childress, of Dobson; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Linda Childress, of Mount Airy; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Johnny Clifford Childress, of Mount Airy; a "special daughter", Eileen Pyles, of Mount Airy; and a special nephew, Brad Sechrist, of Siloam. In addition to his parents, Mr. Childress was preceded in death by two brothers, Buford Childress and Charlie Houston Childress. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy conducted by the Rev. Roger Miller, the Rev. Doug Butcher and the Rev. Bill Tucker. Burial will be in the Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery, with full military honors conducted by VFW Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

COOMBS

Our beloved Yvonne Coombs passed away at 12:15 a.m. Sept. 4, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was the mother of Franka Ahyee-Edwards and adopted mother of Shirland Joseph; her sisters are Cynthia, Angela, Thelma, Inez Coombs and Monica Balthazar; brothers are the Rev. J. Fredrick Coombs, and Cecil, Ashley, Ernest and Hubert Coombs; she was the aunt of Anne-Marie Cropper, Karlene Coombs and Mark and Cecil Coombs and many more; grandmother of Nicholas Parris; friend of Virginia Hardesty Sandra Hooper, Fred and Glenda Leeks, Thomas and Shirley Bailey and Sister Jane Wiles; and many more friends. A service of thanksgiving will be 3 p.m. Satur-day, Sept. 8, 2001, at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Seth O. Lartey presiding. The family will meet with friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the church. (Russell)

GREENSBORO - Mr. Isaac Dillard Cox, 82, of 2029 Pleasant Ridge Road died Sept. 6, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Tony Thomas and the Rev. Terry McKoin. Burial will be in Westminister Gardens. A native of Stokes County, Mr. Cox was born May 21, 1919, to Sandy Lee Cox and Mary Elizabeth Essick Cox. Mr. Cox was one of 13 children and was a farmer all of his life. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mattie Smith; and a daughter, Rebecca Hudson. Surviving are five daughters, Sadie Frazier, of Colfax and Etta Lee Isaacs, Elizabeth Parrish, Marie Casteen and Ellen Peric, all of Greensboro; a brother, Charlie Cox, of Colfax; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

FLYNT

PORTLAND, Texas - Mrs. Carolyn Wallin Flynt, 50, died unexpectedly this week. She was born on July 18, 1951, to Frank Albert Wallin and Virginia Wallin. She graduated in 1969 from East Forsyth High School, where she was an Eaglette, a member of the National Honor Society and president of the Future Homemakers of America. Mrs. Flynt graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Nursing in 1974 and entered the U.S. Army. She was a nurse and also a Sharpshooter Instructor. She retired from the U.S. Army Reserve with the rank of major. She is survived by her husband, James M. Flynt Jr. of Kernersville; her two daughters, Catherine Marie Walsh of Greensboro and Amy Melinda Walsh of Kernersville; and her father, Frank Albert Wallin of Walkertown. She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Wallin. Mrs. Flynt loved and cared for her family very much. Her daughters loved her with all their hearts. She enjoyed wildlife in general and her dogs in particular. A memorial service and funeral arrangements have not been finalized at this time. A memorial service will be held at the Limbaugh Funeral Home in Portland, Texas. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

LAKEY

FARMINGTON - Mr. Bobby Gene Lakey, 75, of Farmington Road died Friday morning at his home. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Farmington Community cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 Saturday evening. Memorials can be directed to the Farmington Community cemetery, c/o Mrs. J.T. Green, 2563 Farmington Road, Mocksville. Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Leroy (Lou L.) Tollison Jr. of Farmington; and a grandson, Christopher W. Tollison. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Jean Riddle Lakey; and a son, Roland Lakey II.

LANDERS

Mr. Moral Clyde Landers, 77, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 21, 1924, in Kanawha County, W.Va., to Okey Malcolm Landers Sr. and Omega Mae Bailey Landers. Mr. Landers retired from Gravely Tractors in Clemmons after more than 30 years and was most recently associated with Golding Farms. He was a devoted and active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Surviving are his wife, Emma Lea Hoffman Landers, of the home; two daughters, Barbara Miller and husband Craig of Warrenton, Va., and Brenda Chilton of Winston-Salem; a son, Brian Landers of Beverly Hills, Calif.; a grandson, Stephen Miller of Warrenton, Va., and a brother, Okey Landers Jr. and wife Carol of Monroe. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Gary Chapman and Dr. Guy Hipp officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church Building Fund, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

McMANUS

Mr. Cummings W. McManus Jr., 80, died Thursday in the Prince Nursing Care Center at the Brookridge Retirement Com-munity, Winston-Salem. He was born in Sanford on May 17, 1921, to Cummings W. and Bessie Councilman McManus and lived there until 1989 when he moved to Winston-Salem. He graduated from Sanford High School and attended N.C. State College. He married Eloise Garriss on March 11, 1944. Mr. McManus was the founder and president of Mac's Business Machines Inc. for 36 years from 1948 to 1984, and in his semiretirement worked part time for four years for Jones Printing Co. During his 68 years in Sanford, he was an active and dedicated participant in various community organizations, serving First Baptist Church as Sunday-school director, church training director, chairman of the board of deacons, and on numerous committees. He was moderator of the Sandy Creek Association from 1977 to 1979. Mr. McManus joined the Sanford Lions Club in 1952 and held several offices in the local club, as well as District 31F. He was treasurer, secretary and president of the local club and was named Lion of the Year twice. He won the District 31F best secretary award and several as district White Cane chairman and District 31F Cabinet secretary. He had perfect attendance for 45 years. Mr. McManus served many years on the board of directors of Lee County Industries and was a volunteer for the Lee Co. Emergency Food Pantry and the Road to Recovery Cancer Program. Mr. and Mrs. McManus moved to the Brookridge Retirement Community in Wins-ton-Salem in September 1989 and joined the Knollwood Baptist Church. After this move, Mr. McManus joined the Twin City Lions Club, from which he was awarded a lifetime membership and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor conferred by the Lions Club International Foundation. He was active in all phases of the Brookridge community, serving on the worship committee for many years. Mr. McManus is survived by his wife of 57 years, Eloise; a daughter, Frances LeRoy and her husband Chip of Sanford; a son, David Cummings McManus and wife Laura of Clayton; three grandchildren, Forrest LeRoy, and wife Kim of East Hampton, Long Island, N.Y. and David and Meredith LeRoy of Sanford; a sister, Bess Vaughn and husband Earl of Darlington, S.C.; a brother, Charles McManus and wife Kitty of Catawba; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Sanford by the Rev. Eric Porterfield and the Rev. Dave Early. Burial will follow at Lee Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Rogers-Pickard Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to the Knollwood Baptist Church, 330 Knollwood St., Winston Salem, NC 27104; Brookridge Retirement Community, 1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston Salem, NC 27103. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Brookridge Retirement Center.

NANCE

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Molly Virginia Vestal Nance, 75, formerly of Boonville died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor, Clemmons after several years of declining health. Molly is the widow of the late Raymond Nance who died July 7, 1979. They shared 31 years of happiness together. Molly was born to Mary Elizabeth (Mamie) Kitrell Vestal and Tandy B. Vestal on Sept. 14, 1925. She spent most of her life in Yadkin County and is a member of Boonville Baptist Church, Boonville. She had a life that enriched her family and friends by her caring and sharing of herself and especially the love she had for children. She had a "smile" and "hugs" that everyone will remember her by. Her parents and husband along with a brother, Howard Taft Vestal, and; her sister, Nina Eads, are deceased. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Lynn Nance Shropshire and husband Kent; and her son, Raymond Dale Nance of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six sisters, Mrs. Lillian (Clyde) Jester and Mrs. Shirley (James) Holsclaw of Boonville, Mrs. Lou Brown of Germanton, Mrs. Katie (Frank) Stanley-Naples, Mrs. Viola (Dwight) Martin and Mrs. Martha Newsome, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Troy M. (Rose) Vestal of Winston-Salem and Tula W. (Bonnie) Vestal of Boonville: a special sister-in-law, Mrs. Zettie Vestal of Moravian Falls; and a special brother-in-law, Archie D. Hobson of Boonville, along with several nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly. A graveside service for her family and close friends will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, by the Rev. W. L. Pearson Jr. in the Boonville Baptist Church cemetery, Boonville. The family received friends from 7 to 9 Thursday, Sept. 6, at Gentry Family Funeral Services, Highway 601 N., Yadkin-ville. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Share-A-Home of Yadkin County, 2800 Woodruff Road, Boonville, NC 27011; the Boonville cemetery, P.O. Box 166, Boonville, NC 27011; or the charity of the donor's choice. Her children wish to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Paul Gulley and staff of Elkin, Dr. Mounir Ibrahim, Dr. Roger McCauley and Dr. Larry C. Dekle, the Behavioral Health Resources-Second Annex, and the Ninth Floor West staff of Forsyth Medical Center, Dr. Susan Auffinger, Dr. Rick Cornwall, Clemmons and Hospice of Forsyth County for their professionalism and sincere caring of the quality of life for their Mom. A loving appreciation to Mrs. Phyllis Stroud, the Share-A-Home staff, Boonville; the Rose Tara Plantation staff, King, the Reynolda Park staff, Winston-Salem, and the Meadowbrook Manor, Unit 111 staff, Clemmons, who have all been her "earthly" angels. KERNERSVILLE - Mr. John Worley Nichols, 72, of 1251 Old Salem Road died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Nichols was born June 4, 1929, in Johnson County, Tenn., a son of the late William Arthur and Bonnie Dickens Nichols. He was of the Baptist faith and a U.S. Army Korean War veteran. He was a retired auto technician. Surviving are his wife, Charlotte Cornett Nichols of the home; a daughter, Mary E. Berrier of Southmont; five sons, Thomas W. Nichols of Chardon, Ohio, Michael J. Nichols of Winston-Salem, Steven W. Nichols of Atlanta, Ga., Edward A. Nichols of Kernersville and Jeff L. Nichols of Willoughby, Ohio; four sisters, Edna Osborne of Creston; Ruth Jardin of Downingtown, Pa., Lois Hagans of Coatesville, Pa., and Mildred Graybeal of Mountain City, Tenn.; two brothers, Bill Nichols of Longview, Wash., and Junior Nichols of Mountain City, Tenn; a half sister, Mae Shoun of Mountain City, Tenn.; a half brother, Ray Nichols of Johnson City, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, John E. Nichols, Josh L. Nichols, Joseph A. Nichols, Catie C. Nichols and Thomas John Nichols. A graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Mountain City, Tenn., by the Rev. Tim Duncan and the Rev. Bill Brown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville.

POSEY

Mr. Phillip W. Posey passed away Sept. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 16, 1947, in Forsyth County to Russell and Ruby Wilkins Posey. Mr. Posey was a veteran and served for the National Guard. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two sisters, Frances Fox and Betty Hawes. He is survived by two brothers, Robert M. Posey (Kathleen) of Winston-Salem and Charles Posey of Clemmons. A memorial service will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, P.O. Box 5216, Glen Allen, VA 23058-5216.

SPEER

YADKINVILLE - Mr. William Luther Speer, 92, of Sugartown Road passed away Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Center. He was born June 22, 1909, in Yadkin County to the late William A. and Sarah E. Hunter Speer. Mr. Speer was a retired farmer and was a member of Pilot View Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Luria Mae Hobson Speer; his second wife, Annie Adams Speer, on Aug. 5, 2001; and by eight brothers and sisters. Surviving are his stepson, Mr. Hugh (Gertrude) Adams of Yadkinville; stepdaughter Mrs. Nellie (Granville) Blevins of Yadkinville; stepgranddaughters Joy Adams-Kay and husband Jerome Kay of Yadkinville, Robin Blevins of Yadkinville and Karen Baker of Boonville; great-granddaughters Jennifer and Jordan Kay of Yadkinville and Brianne Baker of Boonville; stepgreat-grandsons Nicholas Martin and Blake Goins, both of Yadkinville. His funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. C.G. White. Burial will follow in Pilot View Friends Meeting. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, U.S. Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. WALL

Mrs. Doris Campbell Wall, 75, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Sept. 7, 2001, at the Brian Center in Lexington. She was born April 24, 1926, in Forsyth County to Andrew Charles and Cora Faye Reed Campbell. She was a member of Freeman Street Baptist Church. Mrs. Wall was employed with Hanes Knitting, and was a home health care worker for 15 years. She was also employed with Mother & Daughter store for two years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Grant Wall; two sisters, Edith Campbell Earl and Nancy Campbell Hester; and a brother, Andrew Charles Campbell. Surviving are two sons, Michael Wall and John Wall, both of Advance; two grandchildren, Matt and Mandy Wall; and a brother, Roy Mac Campbell of Clemmons. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with the Rev. Bob Whitaker and the Rev. Clint Branch officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or ALS Foundation, WFU/BMC, Department of Neurology, Attention: Laura Smith, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157.

WEATHERMAN

ELKIN - Mrs. Grace Blackburn Weatherman, 87, of 203 Edwards Center St. died Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, at the West Elkin Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. J.T. Sizemore officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunrise cemetery in Jonesville. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services to lie in state. Mrs. Weatherman was born Aug. 2, 1914, in Surry County to Ira and Adelaide Harris Blackburn. She was a housewife. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Faye Evans; and two brothers, Clay Blackburn and Harvey Blackburn. She is survived by her husband, Harold Weatherman, of the home; four sons and daughters-in-law, Devon and Patricia Weatherman of Jonesville, Ricky and Cindy Weatherman of Matthews, Bobby and Brenda Weatherman of Taylorsville and Harold and Tony Weatherman of Charleston, S.C.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jerry and Harley Duncan and Vonda Lewis, all of Elkin; a brother, Paul Blackburn, of Elkin; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Saturday evening at the Grandview's Tri-County Funeral Home in Elkin.
