Mr. William Joel Wilson, 74, of Winston-Salem died Thursday Sept. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Jan. 7, 1927, in Robinsville to the late Arnold L. and Elizabeth Rucker Wilson. Mr. Wilson served in the U.S. Navy during World War ll and was retired from Southern Bell with 36 years service. He was a member of Mineral Springs Baptist Church and also a member of The Telephone Pioneers of America. Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by a son, William Joel Wilson Jr.; a sister, Helen Nathey; and a brother, Arnold Wilson. He is survived by his wife, Jeanette Goforth Wilson, of the home; a daughter, Christina Gail Wilson, of Asheville; two grandchildren, Jennifer Stewart, of Winston-Salem and Joel D. Wilson and wife, Brooke, of Oklahoma City, Okla.; a great-grandson, Tyler William Wilson; a daughter-in-law, Judy Wilson, of Lewisville; two sisters, Clara Everhart, of Winston-Salem and Mary Shaw, of California; two brothers, Gene Wilson, of California and Keith Wilson, of Massachusetts; and a number of loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Mineral Springs Baptist Church by Dr. James A. (Gus) Thomas and Dr. Cecil Cave. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

BINKLEY

Miss Doris Gertrude Binkley, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons. She was born Aug. 28, 1916, in Forsyth County to Willie Lee Binkley and Lena Boger Binkley. Miss Binkley was a member of Ardmore Moravian Church, and retired from Bank of America. Preceding Miss Binkley in death are two sisters, Louise Parks and Stella Weatherman; and two brothers, William and Richard Binkley. Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Sue B. Hughes and husband, Reuben, of Winston-Salem, Evelyn Spainhour and husband, Alton, of Winston-Salem, and Ruby Pope and husband, Bobby, of Clemmons; two brothers, Glenn Binkley and wife, Hilma, of Winston-Salem, and Kenneth Binkley and wife, Catherine, of Hickory; and two sisters-in-law, Edith and Hazel Binkley, both of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, in the Moravian Graveyard with the Rev. Kevin Frack officiating. ECCLES

ADVANCE - Mrs. Ethel Studevent Eccles, 77, of 4209 U.S. Highway 158 in Advance, died Sept. 14 in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center following a brief illness. She was born in Davie County, a daughter of the late Shirley and Lottie Campbell Studevent. She was educated in the Davie County public schools, and attended North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and Winston-Salem State University. For many years, she was a medical laboratory technician at Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospital. Later she taught public school in Forsyth County as a reading specialist, from which she retired. She was a member of Capernaum Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alexander Eccles, and a son, Charles Eccles. She is survived by a son, Melvin (Lucille) Eccles of Advance; a brother, Perry (Mickie) Studevent of Advance; a sister, Ruth S. (Eugene) Dalton of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, in the chapel of Graham Funeral Home in Mocksville with Brother Bernard Revels officiating. Burial will follow in Redland Church of Christ cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. (GRAHAM)

WESTFIELD - Mr. Samuel "Mack" McDonald Hughes, 52, of 5082 Highway 89 West in Westfield, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Simmons Chapel Church in Westfield. The family is being served by Howell Funeral Service of Pilot Mountain.

KING

Mr. Urchel Lanier King, 72, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at his home. Mr. King was born July 28, 1929, in Orange County to the late Elliott Carlton and Ethel Allen King. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. King was a retired automobile sales manager and an avid golfer. He had made four holes-in-one in his lifetime. He is survived by his wife of the home, Patsy C. King; a daughter, Tami K. Morrell, and a son, Zachary King, both of Yadkinville; a stepson, David Coltrane, of Charlotte; three grandchildren; two brothers, Mallonee W. King, of Winston-Salem, and Allan A. King, of Concord; and four sisters, Saphera K. Anthony, of King, Nancy K. Gordon, of Winston-Salem, Earline K. Quesinberry, of Winston-Salem, and Linda K. Reeves of Lake Norman. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Hayworth-Miller Chapel by Dr. Ken Carter and the Rev. Susan Hubbard. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, 1386-A Westgate Center Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

LAWSON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Wiley Jackson Lawson, 81, of 162 Salisbury Lane in Mount Airy, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Scenic View Health Center in King. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, at Howell Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy.

MAURICE

RURAL HALL - Mrs. Susan Shaw Maurice, 46, died unexpectedly at her home on Saturday. She was born in Winston-Salem on July 8, 1955, to Wilbur Buren Shaw and Mary Parker Shaw. She had lived most of her life in Winston-Salem and was employed by Joyce-Munden Co. She had formerly served as a Girl Scout leader. She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in King. Mrs. Maurice was preceded in death by her mother, and a brother, William Shaw. Surviving are her husband of 24 years, Gary Mark Maurice of the home; a daughter, Jessica Elizabeth Maurice of Cincinnati, Ohio; her father Wilbur Shaw and her stepmother Viola, of Winston-Salem; a brother, Mark Shaw of Norfolk, Va.; her mother-in-law, Jacqueline Maurice of Rural Hall; and a number of cousins, nieces and nephews. A funeral Mass will be held at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Father Larry Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Monday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel from 7 to 9 p.m.

MORRIS

DENTON - Mrs. Edith Penry Morris, 80, of North Main Street in Denton, died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Mountain Vista Health Park. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 18, at the Denton Town cemetery with the Rev. Vern Peterson and the Rev. Joe Collins officiating. Mrs. Morris was born Feb. 1, 1921, in Orange County to Robert Lee Penry and Cordelia Leonard Penry. She was a lifelong resident of Denton and was a homemaker, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Garland Morris, of the home; a son, Dale Morris, and wife, Jane, of Tyro; daughters Kay Stroupe and husband, Bill, of Winston-Salem, Jan Gallimore and husband, Dick, of High Point, and Judy Williams and husband, Chip, of Wilmington; nine grandchildren, Tonya Compton and Dale Morris Jr., both of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Penny Yates of Linwood, Beau Stroupe, of Winston-Salem, Sloan Bishop, of Greensboro, Rick Gallimore, of Birmingham, Ala., Brian Gallimore, of Raleigh, and Tyler and Connor Williams, of Wilmington; two great-grandchildren, Nathan and Caleb Yates, of Linwood; and a brother, Larry Penry, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz. The family will see friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton. Memorials may be made to Mountain Vista Health Park, P.O. Box 1547, Denton, NC 27239.

SHANAHAN

FIELDALE, Va. - Teresa Meeks Shanahan, 46, of #5 Churchill Road in Fieldale, Va., died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at her home. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses (1001 Mineral Springs Road, Madison, N.C.). Burial will be in Overlook cemetery in Eden. Mrs. Shanahan was born in Rockingham County, and was a homemaker. She had graduated from Winston-Salem State University with a bachelor of science degree in nursing. She is survived by her husband, John Shanahan, of the home; a daughter, Courtney Paulson, and husband, Thomas, of Martinsburg, W.Va.; her mother, Barbara Meeks, of Ridgeway, Va.; three brothers, Ray Meeks, of Martinsville, Va., James Meeks, of Hillsboro, and Joel Meeks of Ridgeway, Va.; three sisters, Donna Bray, of Fieldale, Va., Vicky Burch, of Crestview, Ky., and Tanya Law of Hillsboro; and numerous nieces and nephews. Teresa lost a hard-fought battle of over six years to cancer. No visitation is planned at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Society, 1100 Wilkens Street, Mayodan, NC 27027.

WILSON

PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. Elizabeth "Lib" Rose Wood Wilson, 71, of Sweetbriar Road in Pfafftown, died at Forsyth Medical Center Saturday afternoon. She was born Jan. 5, 1930, to John Calvin Wood and Maggie Johnson Wood. She was retired from Hanes Knitting Co. and had been a cosmetologist. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church for over 40 years, where she had been a Sunday school teacher, a G.A. Leader, and had sung in the church choir. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Johnie McKinley Rose in 1980, and Norwood Gary Wilson in 1991; and a brother, John Francis Wood. Surviving are her daughter, Teresa Rose Everhart and husband Dennis of Pfafftown; her granddaughter, Kathryn Celeste Everhart and friend, Jesse Carr; two grandsons, Max Dietrich Everhart of Asheville, and John Raynond Everhart of Pfafftown; a sister, Helen Trunick of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Mary Ruth Wood of Hamptonville; and stepchildren, Jan Wilson and husband Harold of Okalahoma City, Okla., Angie Bates of Linwood, Rodney Wilson and wife Sheila of Germanton, and Beverly Hoots and husband Tom of Winston-Salem. The funeral will be Tuesday at 2 p.m. at her church, Macedonia Baptist Church in Tobaccoville, with the Rev. Paul Norman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels of Asheville, 146 Victoria Rd., Asheville, NC, 28801; or to the donor's choice.

BROWN

Mr. Eddie B. Brown of 579 Kinard Drive was born Jan. 10, 1932, in Lewisville, S.C., to Mary M. Brown and the late John Henry Brown. He was a resident of Winston-Salem for most of his life and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Brown was a retiree of Thomasville Furniture Co., and was of the Baptist faith. He departed this life Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center following a period of illness. Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, Sept. 7 from John Wesley AME Zion Church, with the Rev. James Gaskins officiating. Interment with military rites will follow in the Salisbury National cemetery in Salisbury. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour (11:30 a.m. to noon) at the church. He leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Sheila Redd; his mother, Mary M. Brown; three grandchildren, Lakesha Payne, Marcus Redd and Markita Redd, all of Winston-Salem; four aunts, Martha (Haywood) Ratchford of Charlotte, and Millie Massey, Jessie Steward and Marie McCullough, both of Baltimore, Md.; two uncles, Leon Moffitt and Sammy (Mary) Moffitt, both of Rock Hill, S.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends including a devoted cousin, Rosa Harrell of Winston-Salem. GATES

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Goldie Vera Smith Hawkins Gates died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001. She was born in Floyd County, Va., to the late Lee Davis Smith and Lizena Alice Sumpter Smith on July 6, 1905. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Erwin Gates, four sisters and two brothers. Surviving are three children and their spouses, Chester Hawkins Jr. and Norma of Oceanside, Calif., Gayle Gates Horrell and Jason of Walnut Cove, with whom Mrs. Gates lived, and Ronald M. Gates and Lucy of Norfolk, Va.; four grandchildren, Randall Hawkins, Bruce Hawkins, and Ron Hawkins and wife Sonia, all of California, and James Erwin Gates of Norfolk, Va.; three great-grandchildren, Christina, David and Tara Hawkins of California; and four nieces, Charlotte Wharton and husband Jim of Black Mountain, Mary Lou Cheek and husband Charles of Richmond, Va., Patricia Kelly and Colleen Kelly of Southbury, Conn. Mrs. Gates lived in Newport News, Va., from 1940 to 1970. After her husband's death in 1958, she became successful in real estate and continued to raise and educate her children. She moved to Roanoke, Va., in 1970, where she joined First Baptist Church and was an active member for many years. She belonged to the Fidelis Sunday School Class, the XYZ's, and the Women's Missionary Union. Her faith was strong. In 1999, she moved with her daughter and son-in-law to North Carolina, where her church family has been Salem Chapel United Church of Christ and Pastor Larry Williams. Mrs. Gates was a loving mother, community volunteer, friend to many, and a faithful Christian. She will be missed by all who knew her. The family will receive friends at Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Oakley's Downtown Chapel in Roanoke, Va., with visitation 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in Peninsula Memorial Park in Newport News, Va. GOOGE

Mrs. Vivian Hoots Googe, 80, of Clovelly Road, died Sept. 4, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Yadkin County Dec. 11, 1920, to Coleman and Anna Hennings Hoots. Mrs. Googe was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church and a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School. She attended Appalachian State University for two years and graduated from High Point College. Mrs. Googe taught kindergarten at Ardmore Baptist Church and previously taught in the Forsyth County School System and the Mocksville City Schools. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bill Googe; a son, Stephen Lee Googe, and his wife, Susan, of Arcadia; a daughter, Ann Nusbaum, and her husband, Alan, of Norfolk, Va.; and five grandchildren, Jordan Googe, Bill Googe, Andrew Nusbaum, Lindsay Nusbaum and Matthew Nusbaum. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Ardmore Baptist Church with Dr. Bill Ireland and the Rev. Ty Talton officiating. Burial will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund, 530 Irving St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HARMAN

KING - Mildred Virginia Farmer Harman, 75, of High Valley Road, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001. She was born May 17, 1926, in Wyoming County, W.Va., to Arthur and Ora Tilley Farmer. Her husband, James Franklin Harman, preceded her in death last December. She was a member of Quaker Gap Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Sandra Harman and husband Michael Burnette of King, and Lois Pratt of Florida; two sons, James Harman of King, and Michael Harman and wife Michelle of Florida; five grandchildren, Tina and Tanya Harman, Kevin Motsinger, Krystal Weida, and Michael James Harman; two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ruby and Elsie Shumate of West Virginia, and Maxine Bowman of Georgia; and a brother, Ernest Farmer of Indiana. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7 at Slate Funeral Home in King. Dr. James Baldwin will officiate. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, in the Tom Lilly Family cemetery in Ghent, W.Va. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at Slate Funeral Home in King. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to King Outreach Ministry, P.O. Box 1450, King, NC 27021.

KIRSCHHOCH

RALEIGH - Dorothy Louise Kirschhoch, 83, of Apt. 353, 3113 Charles B. Root Wynd, Raleigh, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001. Mrs. Kirschhoch was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1917, to the late Arthur and Edith Roberts Wolf. Surviving are a son, Frederick Kirschhoch of Morristown, N.J.; a daughter, Judy Jaenicke of Raleigh; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ferdinand Kirschhoch, and a brother, Charles Wolf. Mrs. Kirschhoch was a very active member of the Moravian Church her whole life. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Saturday in Oak-wood cemetery. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m. at Raleigh Moravian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contri-butions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's Street, Raleigh, NC 27605; or to Raleigh Moravian Church, 1816 Ridge Road, Raleigh, NC 27607. ORR

Mrs. Cheryl Yvonne McCray Orr, 48, formerly of 422 Corona Street, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at the home of her brother, the Rev. Charles McCray (3980 Logan Lane) following an extended illness. She was a native and resident of Winston-Salem, and was a member of Word of Life World Outreach Center, where she served with the Pastor's Aid. Cheryl was a graduate of Parkland High School, Class of 1971, and was employed with Winston-Salem Dental Care. She was preceded in passing by her husband, Thomas Orr. She is survived by a son, Kevin Watlington; a daughter, Nikki Orr; and a special granddaughter, Keisha Jones, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Ernestine Oglesby of Raleigh, and Margie Dodd of Winston-Salem; two brothers, the Rev. Charles McCray (Bridget) and Howard McCray (Debbie), all of Winston-Salem; and many other relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, from the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Friday, from noon to 1 p.m., at the funeral home. (RUSSELL)
