JONESVILLE - Mrs. Ida Hobson Vestal, 92, of 108 Triplett St. died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Elkin Healthcare Center. She was born Feb. 6, 1909, in Yadkin County to Emett and Bertha Collins Hobson. She was a faithful member of Charity Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She was devoted to her family and friends. Mrs. Vestal was preceded in death by her husband Travis E. Vestal; two sisters, Ada Caudle and Zettie Brown; and her brothers, Winfield, Oliver, Troy, Bob, and Early Hobson. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Jean (Bobby) Matthews of East Bend, Mrs. Bertha Isaccs of Jonesville, and Mrs. Kate (David) Billings of Jonesville; a son, Frank (Judy) Vestal of Kernersville; a sister, Pauline H. Matthews of Yadkinville; three grandchildren, Tonya (Craig) McNeill of Cincinnati, Ohio, Todd (Renee) Billings of Jonesville, and Jennifer Vestal of Kernersville; and three great-grandchildren, Kyle and Austin McNeill, and Samantha Billings. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday Sept. 7 at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Charles Lethcoe and the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt. Burial will follow in Charity Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. Memorials may be made to Charity Baptist Church cemetery Fund, Boonville, N.C.; or to Hospice of Surry/Yadkin County, Mount Airy, N.C.

AMAKER

Mrs. Constance Willette Amaker, "Connie B," 49, of 1220 E. 17th St. passed Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at her residence. She was born May 2, 1952, in Winston-Salem to the late Willie Black and Mattie Brady (stepfather Robert Brady). She was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Sheepfold Ministries #5 and 6. She also was a member of the American Legion Post #128 Ladies Auxiliary, and the Fantastic Ten Social Club. She leaves to cherish loving memories her devoted husband, Larry Amaker, of the home; her sister, Jackie Frazier; her grandmother, Christine "Ma-Chris" Burton; her sister-in-law, Jessie Amaker; two stepdaughters and three stepgrandchildren; four sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law; and many cousins, aunts and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, from Shiloh Baptist Church, where Dr. Paul A. Lowe will give the eulogy. Burial will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assemble at and leave from the residence. Arrangements entrusted to and services will be conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home.

BARKER

Mrs. Carolyn Francis Barker, 58, died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Barker was born March 3, 1943, in Bristol, Tenn., to Emmett Ray and Bonnie Curtis Perry. She was preceded in death by a brother, D.E. Perry. Surviving are a daughter, Vonda Phillips of Greensboro; a son, Billy Phillips of Virginia Beach, Va.; a grandson, Bryan Phillips of Virginia Beach, Va.; a brother, James Perry of Harmony; two sisters, Kay Faust and husband Ernie of Winston-Salem, and Shelby Steelman and husband J.W. of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Bill Teague officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.

BLACKBURN

ROARING RIVER - Mrs. Sally Blackburn, 52, wife of Travis Blackburn, of Ruritan Road, died Saturday, Sept. 8, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Blackburn was born June 4, 1949, in Iredell County to Clarence and Rebecca Johnson Dickens. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church and a supervisor for Lowe's Cos. Surviving are two daughters, Tandy Blackburn and Tamara Ann Blackburn, both of the home; three stepsons, Bobby Blackburn of Roaring River, Hal Blackburn of North Wilkesboro, and Tracy Blackburn of Wilkesboro; a sister, Daisy Shoemaker of North Wilkesboro; a half-brother, Thurman Dickens, of Old Fort; a half-sister, Carolyn James, of Millers Creek; and seven grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Burl Faw, the Rev. Olin Barker, and the Rev. William Souther officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight.

DOWDY

COLFAX - Mr. Roger Dale Dowdy, 36, of 8619 Bull Road died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at his home. Mr. Dowdy was born April 17, 1965, in Mecklenburg County, a son of Frank Lee and Hazel Shaw Dowdy of the home. Surviving in addition to his parents are three sisters, Peggy and husband, John Craven, of Greensboro, Carol Wombaugh, of Brown Summit, and Sharon and husband, Frank Linker, of Concord; four brothers, Raymond Dowdy and Jerry Dowdy, of the home, Herbert Dowdy, of Greensboro, and Mike and his wife, Terry Dowdy, of Colfax; and nine nieces and six nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel by the Rev. Andrew Shank, the Rev. Tony Dowdy and Mike Dowdy. Burial will follow in Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

DUGGINS

ADVANCE - Mrs. Thelma Weavil Duggins, 77, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Jan. 19, 1924, in Danbury to Reid and Hattie Manuel Flinchum. She was retired from the Salem Co. She was a member of Isom Baptist Church in Walnut Cove, and a member of the Mocksville Women's Club. Mrs. Duggins was preceded in death by two husbands, Raymond Weavil and Jack Duggins. Surviving are three daughters, Linda Smith and husband, Sidney, Pam Holcomb and husband, Mike, and Michelle Mitchell and husband, Pat, all of Advance; seven grandchildren, Andrea Winters, Allison Buckner, Alisa Allen, Mike Holcomb, Marc Holcomb, Lauren Mitchell and Alex Mitchell; four great-grandchildren; an aunt, Lula Maynard; a sister-in-law, Luvenia Flinchum; and special friends, Henry "Swede" and Eva Jurgensen, Ruth Duggins, and Sherry Haldeman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Lanny Atkins and the Rev. Chester Montgomery. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel, and at other times at Mrs. Duggins' home. JAMES

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Eloise Hartman James, 74, of Sunset Road died Sept. 9, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor of Davie. She was born in Davidson County on June 9, 1927, to Lonnie and Dora Hartman. Mrs. James was a member of Arcadia United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis James, and a brother, James Hartman. Surviving are her daughter, Donna Wood, and her husband, Keith, of Clemmons; a son, Steve James, and his wife, Teresa, of Clemmons; four grandchildren, Michael, Josh, Chad and Lyndsi; a sister, Edith Ketner; and a brother, C.A. Hartman. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Arcadia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tommy Robertson officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Arcadia United Methodist Church, 117 Boulevard Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.

JOHNSON

Sallie C. Johnson, of Winston-Salem, died peacefully at her home Saturday after 105 wonderful years with her family and friends. She was born May 28, 1896, in Yadkin County to Nancy and Joseph Cook. She was educated in the public schools of Yadkin County and attended Meisenheimer Boarding School, now Pfeiffer College. She was predeceased by her husband, G. Hobart Johnson, in 1992; her brothers, J. Corbett Cook and Willie J. Cook; and her great-granddaughter, Caroline J. Westmoreland. She and Hobart were married for 77 years and were active members of Waughtown Baptist Church. She was devoted to her family and is survived by her daughter, Lessie J. Dunn; her son, Albert H. Johnson; as well as four grandchildren, Judy K. Marion, Nan K. Currie, Jane K. Bumgarner, and Joseph F. Kimel; and five great-grandchildren, Kimberly Marion, Sally Sheppard, Andrew Bumgarner, Lauren Kimel, and Adam Westmoreland. The family sincerely appreciates the quality care provided by her faithful caregivers. A funeral service will be held at Vogler's Main Street Chapel Tuesday at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A private graveside service will follow at Oaklawn cemetery. Memorials may be made to Waughtown Baptist Church, 1538 Waughtown St., Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

KIRBY

PINNACLE - Mr. Nelson Blease Kirby Jr., 67, of the Shoals Community in Surry County, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 28, 1934, in Durham County to Nelson Blease and Corenna McClenney Kirby. Mr. Kirby served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was a member and past president of the Board of Directors of the Forsyth Rescue Squad, and a member of Enterprise Lodge #752. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Craver Kirby, of the home, and his beloved golden retriever, Daisy Lu. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Norwood Green. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the donor's choice.

KOONTS

LEXINGTON - Mr. Roy Clifton "R.C." Koonts Jr., 71, of Happy Hill Road in Lexington died at 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, in Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a sudden illness. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Reeds Baptist Church, where he was a member. Dr. Dan R. Hutchins will officiate. Burial will be in the Reeds Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Koonts was born in Davidson County on Feb. 15, 1930, to Roy Clifton Koonts and Mary Myers Koonts. He was the founder of R.C. Koonts and Sons Masonry Inc. He was a member of the Lexington Lapidary Club, the North Carolina Masonry Contractors Association, the American Rifleman's Association, and American Legion Post 13. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was preceded in death by a son, Danny Glenn Koonts, who died Aug. 13, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Edith Leonard Koonts of the home; two sons, Cliff Koonts and wife Donna, and Craig Koonts and wife Cathy, all of Lexington; his mother, Mary Myers Koonts Littler of Lexington; seven grandchildren, Jaime Koonts Davis and husband Wesley, Matthew Koonts, Kristen Koonts, Jessica Koonts, Kelli Koonts, Jason Koonts, and Joshua Koonts, all of Lexington; and a brother, Harry Koonts and wife Audrey Jo of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davidson Funeral Home, and at other times at the home on Happy Hill Road. NELSON

Mr. James Edward "Ed" Nelson Jr., of 3403 Scarsborough Drive, died Sept. 6, 2001. Mr. Nelson was born April 13, 1935, in Lenoir, the son of James Edward Nelson Sr. and Wilma Mae Nelson. He graduated from Lenoir Rhyne College and served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Nelson worked with several insurance companies before he and his wife Jo Nelson bought Triad Insurance Agency Inc. He was a member of the Independent Insurance Association of North Carolina, Quail Unlimited, and St. Leos the Great Catholic Church. A Holy Mass will be held at St. Leos the Great Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10 with interment to follow at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery. A short prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Vogler's Reynolda Chapel with a family visitation to follow. He is survived by his wife Jo of the home, three daughters, Mrs. Lori Cunningham and husband "Chip" of Chesapeake, Va., Miss Carri Nelson of Winston-Salem, and Mrs. Billi Jo Butler and husband Todd of Lewisville; and a son, Mr. Lee Nelson and wife Karen of Tampa, Fla. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Kailee and Claire Cunningham, Maigan and Jack Butler, and Ryan Nelson; and a sister, Mrs. Joan Triplett of Lenoir. Any memorials may be given to the charity of the donor's choice.

PHILLIPS

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Hazel Baldwin Phillips, 59, of Main Church Road, died Saturday at Forsyth Medical Center. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Gospel Baptist Church with the Rev. Kevin Hobson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Eaton Funeral Home in Mocksville. Mrs. Phillips was born Nov. 25, 1941, in Wilkes County to the late Noah and Juanita Wood Baldwin. She had worked as a seamstress at Southeastern Sewing in Mocksville, and was a member of Gospel Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Buster Phillips, of the home; two daughters, Karen Kimrey and Tammy Hutchins; a son, Jeff (Sandy) Hutchins; and a stepdaughter, Betty Jo (Gray) Laymon, all of Mocksville. She also is survived by three sisters, Gladys (Roy) Minton, of Statesville, Kathleen (Don) Johnson, of North Wilkesboro, and Patricia (Kenneth) Russell of Ronda; five brothers, Henry (Pat) Baldwin, of Harmony, Robert (Judy) Baldwin, of Elkin, Tim (Sharon) Baldwin, of Elkin, Glenn (Kathy) Baldwin, of Booneville, and Bill Baldwin of Elkin; and three grandchildren, Chastity Spry, Joshua Hutchins, and Ashley Hutchins, all of Mocksville.

READER-CAMPBELL

Sister Deborah Reader-Campbell departed this earthly life unexpectedly at 6:05 p.m. Sept. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Hospital with her loving family by her side. Deborah was an active member of the Apostolic Church of Christ, were her pastor, Bishop Johnnie Draft, and co-pastor, Elder Lillie Bell Draft, preside. She was the founder of the Family and Friend's Annual Day, secretary of the Pastor's Aide, and secretary of the Senior Missionary Department. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary Department, Spiritual Apostolites and the Pioneer Singing Group - the Spiritual Chorus. She was considered the Elder Draft's personal secretary. In her community, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and the Alzheimer's Association of Winston-Salem. She was a 15-year employee of the Winston-Salem Journal, where she worked as a district manager in the Circulation Department. Her mother Thelma B. Moore preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters and a son, Vocile (Marcus) Wilson, Treva L. Reader, Sebrina J. Reader, and Bobby Lee Reader Jr., all of the city; nine grandchildren, Dominique, Charavina, Krystal, Deannea, Desiree, Brittany, Tiffani, Matthew, and Dej-a; her husband Larry Campbell; two sisters, Carsandra Koger and Lurline (A.J.) Jackson, both of the city; two brothers, Ricardo Moore of the city, and Rodney Moore of Charlotte; an uncle, Paul Barksdale of the home; her spiritual mother, Elder Viola H. Sterling; a loving and devoted cousin, Minister Johnnie Mae Barksdale; three close friends, Charles "Sandy" Young, Mike Williams, and Carolyn Sheppard-Hall; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many friends. Arrangements in care of Douthit Funeral Services, 8066 North Point Blvd. The body will lie in state for public viewing from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11 at the Apostolic Church of Christ, 2044 Martin Luther King Drive. STANLEY

ELKIN - Mr. Thomas Spencer Stanley, 73, of Spencers Trail in Elkin, passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at his residence. He was born March 29, 1928, in Surry County to the late John Alvin and Cora Francis Reese Stanley. Mr. Stanley was retired from Chatham Industries after 45 years, and was a member of New Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Junior Stanley, and a sister, Carrie Mae "Teenie" Scott. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary Ann Phillips Stanley, of the home; three sons, Tommy (Mary) Stanley, and Phil Stanley, of Elkin, and Ricky (Janice) Stanley of Jonesville; four brothers, Clyde (Shelby) Stanley, Jack (Lucy) Stanley, Dennis (Mildred) Stanley, and Bobby (Kathy) Stanley, all of Elkin; three sisters, Georgia (Blaine) Barnes, of Elkin, and Helen (Thomas) Pratt and Nellie (Donnie) Hemric, of Jonesville; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, and three great-stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at New Hope Pentecostal Holiness Church conducted by the Rev. Joe Pyles, the Rev. Gary Sawyers, and the Rev. Othel Haynes. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hodges Funeral Home. Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Surry County.

SWAIM

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mary Cope Swaim, 79, of 703 Engleman Ave. in Burlington passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001. She was born in Cooleemee on Dec. 2, 1921, to the late Thomas Ray and Myrtle Jordan Cope. Survivors include her husband of 62 years, Fair L. Swaim, of the home; a daughter, Lynn Swaim Johnston, of Mooresville; a son, Dr. J. Craig Swaim, and his wife, Terry, of Raleigh; five grandchildren, Kimberly Brooks, and her husband, Sam, of Birmingham, Ala., Rob Johnston, and his wife, Caroline, of Troutman, Katie Smith, and her husband, Travis, of Mooresville, and Andrew and Bradley Swaim of Raleigh; a great-grandchild, Jarrett Smith, of Mooresville; a sister, Carolyn Woodham, of Wilmington; and a brother, William Cope, and his wife, Leona, of Baltimore, Md. Mrs. Swaim was a graduate of Cooleemee High School and attended business school in Winston-Salem. She was employed at Wake Forest University and later was financial secretary at First Baptist Church in Burlington until she became disabled. She also was a member of First Baptist Church, where she was active in teaching adult Sunday school classes and was a member of the W.M.U. Funeral services for Mrs. Swaim will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at First Baptist Church of Burlington. Officiating will be Dr. Craig McMahan and the Rev. Phillip Hughes. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at Rich & Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday. Other times they will be at the residence.

TOMLINSON

Mr. Raymond E. "Shine" Tomlinson, 82, of 5612 Germanton Road, died unexpectedly at his home Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001. Mr. Tomlinson was born Dec. 5, 1918, in Wilson to Wiley W. and Bessie Baynes Tomlinson. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10 at Oak Summit United Methodist Church by the Rev. Patrick Hamrick and the Rev. H. Samuel Carter. Mr. Tomlinson will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Tomlinson was a member of Oak Summit United Methodist Church. He was retired from Winston Leaf Tobacco Co., which lately became Universal Tobacco Co. He was a member of Senior Citizens Club #66. Mr. Tomlinson was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and seven brothers. Survivors include his wife Elizabeth "Lib" Grubbs Tomlinson of the home; a son, Ray Tomlinson Jr. and wife Cindy of Winston-Salem; a brother, Ralph A. Tomlinson and wife Juanita of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. The family ask that memorials be made to Oak Summit United Methodist Church, 732 Oak Summit Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105.

ABSHER

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Vinia Absher, 80, widow of Russell Absher of Elkin Highway, died Sunday, Sept. 9, at her home. Mrs. Absher was born Sept. 2, 1921, in Wilkes County to James Isaac and Annie Shumate Roland. She was a member of Flint Hill Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mary Taylor, of North Wilkesboro; two brothers, Clay Roland, of Hays and Hayden Roland, of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Lola Blackburn, of Wilkesboro; three grandchildren, Dennis Absher Taylor, of Lexington, Shawn Taylor, of North Wilkesboro and Staci Sosa of Florida; and six great-grandchildren, Dennis A. Taylor Jr., of Denver, Colo., Allyssa Sosa and Abby Wilson, both of Cocoa, Fla., Ethan Taylor, of Spartanburg, S.C., and Cari Hall and Adam Hall, both of Lexington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Flint Hill Baptist Church in North Wilkesboro with the Rev. Jackie Richardson officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Miller Funeral Service in North Wilkesboro. Pallbearers will be Absher Taylor Jr., Ronnie Foster, Benny Roland, Adam Hall, Lonnie Parsons and Larry Wyatt.
