AVERY

Elder Robert James Avery, the son of Addie Sykes and Henry Avery, passed away at 2:47 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at the Presbyterian Home after a long illness. He was employed at the First Presbyterian Church as a sexton and retired after 32 years of loyal service. He was an associate elder of Saint Peter's Holiness Church in Ellerbee, where he was faithful and loved his church. Elder Avery loved the Lord as well as the church. He always spent time doing a lot of labor for the church to beautify God's house. He leaves to mourn his loss his loving and devoted wife, Elease Avery of the home; a loving daughter, Gladys Avery of Winston-Salem; a foster son, Bobbie Jeter of Erie, Pa.; four grandchildren, Kenneth L. Garris, Saundra (Michael) Scott and Christopher (Angela) Garris, all of Winston-Salem, and Cheryl Garris of Edison, N.J.; 14 great-grand-children; a great-great-grand-child; two brothers-in-law, Willie Quick and Emory Webster of High Point; a devoted niece and a nephew, Mary Andrews (Bob) Blakeney of High Point; a devoted friend, Ernest Scott Sr.; a caretaker, Ms. Evelyn Townsend of Walkertown; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a foster son, Johnnie Andrews of Washington, D.C. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at King's Chapel Church, 500 Saunders Place, High Point with Bishop J.R. Terry officiating. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 Tuesday night at the church. The family may be reached other times at the home. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Service. (Gilmore)

ELLINGTON

Mr. Bill Ellington, 71, of Charleston, S.C., died Friday, Sept. 6, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Oct. 9, 1929, in Pittsboro to Edgar Worth Ellington and Ethel Wright Ellington. Mr. Ellington served in the Korean War as a hospital corpsman and attended The Citadel. He retired after many years in the electrical supply business. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gilmore Wright Ellington. He is survived by his brother, Edgar Worth Ellington, of Kingsport, Tenn.; his twin brother, James Roland Ellington, of Vacaville, Calif.; his sister, Mary Ethel Tatum, of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at the home of his sister, Mary Ethel Tatum, from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11. Burial will be Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Brown's Chapel Methodist Church, Pittsboro. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Charleston, S.C. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. FOUST

WELCOME - Mr. William Adam Foust Jr., 79, of 580 Craver Road died at 3 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at his home after being in declining health since 1998. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Good Hope United Methodist Church, where he was a member. The Rev. Arthur Holland and the Rev. Tommy Robertson will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military Rites by Arcadia VFW Post #10485. Mr. Foust was born in Guilford County Dec. 6, 1921, to William Adam Foust Sr. and Gertie Mae Kinney Foust. He was owner and operator of Welcome Exxon and was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Air Force in England during World War II. He was a member of the Methodist Men and the Senior Friends at Good Hope United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Violet Dale Hanes Foust, of the home; a daughter, Janice Foust Moore, and husband, Lee S. Moore, of Craver Road, Welcome; two grandchildren, Haley Foust Moore and William Cramer Moore; a brother, Donald G. Foust, of Pinnacle; and three sisters, Willie Maie Stone, of Thomasville, Charlotte Wagner, and her husband, Jack, of Lexington and Annie Sowers and her husband, Marion, of Welcome. The family will see friends from 6 to 8 Tuesday night at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home on Craver Road in Welcome. GREEN

Mr. James Laverne Green, 47, of 2920 New Walkertown Road, Apt. K, departed this life Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem and a graduate of West Forsyth High School. He was employed with Merita Bakery until closing and also worked for Holsum Bakery until his health declined. He leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Kevarius Thomas, James Albright and Ronald Barr; a daughter, Kesha Barr; his mother, Shirley Chavis; two sisters, Veronica (the Rev. Jesse Jr.) Jones and Melinda (Elder Timothy) Quattlebaum; a brother, Edward Green, all of Winston-Salem; a host of uncles, aunts including a devoted uncle, Matthew (Julia) Greene of Raleigh; three nephews, Anthony Green, Reginald Green and Michael Greene, all of Winston-Salem; a niece, Eurika Green; a great-niece; a great-nephew; devoted friend, Sharon Barr of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at St. Matthew Apostolic Church with Bishop Joseph Lowery officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. HENDERSON

UNION GROVE - Mrs. Gracie Lee Rash Henderson, 91, of 156 Angus Hill Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 9, at Davis Regional Medical Center. Born in Iredell County on April 16, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Jonah Wilson Rash Sr. and Mary Templeton Rash. On Aug. 27, 1926, she married Romie Henderson who preceded her in death in 1968. She was retired from the cafeteria at Union Grove School. She was a member of Union Grove United Methodist Church, where for many years she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the United Methodist Women. In 2000, she was the Grand Marshall for the Union Grove Ruritan Club parade. Mrs. Henderson is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Edith H. and Glenn Boger of Union Grove; four grandchildren, Doug Cole (Sarah) of Austin, Texas, Elizabeth Smith of Mocksville, William Glenn Boger Jr. of Granite Quarry and Katie Bowie (Wendell Jr.) of Statesville; six great-grandchildren, Renee Galliher, Wendy June Boger, Wendell P. Bowie II, Maria Kay Bowie, Zachary Hellard and Stephen Cole; two great-great-grandchildren, Amanda Lynn Galliher and Morgan Michelle Galliher; a brother and sister-in-law, Bristol and Bessie Rash of Olin; a sister, Novella "Nell" R. Jordan of Statesville; and a former son-in-law and wife, Don and Linda Cole of Candler. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Henderson was preceded in death by a daughter, Foda H. Cole; two brothers, J.W. Rash Jr. and Roger Rash; and three sisters, Dallas R. Siceloff, Sallie R. Shaver and Virgie R. Barnette. Funeral services for Mrs. Henderson will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Union Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Steve Kirby and the Rev. G. Carroll Jordan officiating. Mrs. Henderson will lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral hour. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Felix Campbell, Tom Henderson, David Jones, Jack Mayberry, William White and Derick Osborne. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening (Tuesday) at Bunch-Johnson Funeral Home. At other times they will be at the residence of Edith and Glenn Boger at 134 Angus Hill Drive, Union Grove. Mrs. Evelyn Allen Crews Jones, 83, of 901 Bethesda Road, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at The Oaks of Forsyth. She was born on July 20, 1918, in Harnett County, a daughter of the late Arthur and Margaret Allen. She was a member of Linville Forest Church of Christ for 50 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvin Jones, in 1980. Surviving are four daughters, Pat Hancock, of San Antonio, Texas, Rachel Solomon, of Kernersville, Brenda Pool, of Mocksville and Bobby Jean Beard of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Margaret Hollar and Flannie Thompson, both of Sanford; eight grandchildren, Rena Hancock Taylor, of Dallas Texas, Mark Hancock, of Mito, Japan, Holly Solomon Barrett, of Greensboro, Carla Ann Hancock Holbrook, of San Antonio, Texas, Damon Lee Solomon, of Cary, Jason Beard and Jimmy Beard of Winston-Salem and Nicole Pool Isley of Clemmons; and 18 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted 12 noon Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel, Kernersville. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

LEVAN

GREENSBORO - Mr. Edward Hall Levan, 81, died Sept. 10, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital after a brief illness. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith. Mr. Levan was born in Alexander County on Sept. 15, 1919. He retired from Piedmont Natural Gas after 29 years of service. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Hanes-Lineberry, North Elm Chapel. Burial will follow at Westminster Gardens cemetery. Mr. Levan is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Beatrice Priddy Levan; sons Jimmy Edward Levan Sr. and wife Ann, Robert Donald Levan Sr. and wife Lauralee and Richard Hall Levan and wife Nancy, all of Greensboro; a daughter, Elizabeth Pierce and husband Gene of Julian; a brother, Williams Ben Levan of Greensboro; five sisters, Eva Willard, Louise Wells and Mary Young, all of Greensboro, Eloise Gaines of Climax and Jackie Ratliffe of Summerfield; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. POOLE

Mrs. Audrey Flynn Poole, 69, died at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home Saturday evening, Sept. 8, 2001, following a lengthy period of illness. A native of Binghamton, N.Y., she was born Sept. 29, 1931, to the late James and Mildred Kail Flynn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and Kerlin Flynn. Audrey was of the Catholic faith. She loved nature, traveling, and the Atlanta Braves. She was especially fond of Pilot Mountain and going to the beach. A devoted wife, she is survived by her husband of more than 48 years, Leon T. Poole, of the home; a daughter, Karen Clifton, of King; three sons, Kelly Poole, of Greenville, S.C., and David Poole, and Scott Poole and wife, Cathy, all of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, James Collins, Joey Roselli, Christina Roselli, Caitlyn Poole, and Audrenna Poole; a sister, Iris Flemming, of New Mexico; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church (Kirby Road) in King with Father Larry Hunt officiating. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Rural Hall. QUINN

Mr. James L. Quinn died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Quinn was born Jan. 17, 1927, in Blacksburg, S.C., to the late Luther and Jenny Whitesides Quinn and was preceded in death by his wife, the former Anita Byers Quinn, in 1959. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Mr. Quinn graduated from King's College in Charlotte. He had made his home in Winston-Salem for the past 41 years and was retired from Pfaff's Paint and Glass. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Rose Quinn Hagins, of Lancaster, S.C.; a brother, William Quinn, of Clyde, Texas; a number of nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Donald King, of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held in Grover, S.C., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be directed to Crisis Control Ministry of Winston-Salem or the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

SEAWELL

BENNETTSVILLE, S.C. - Mrs. Lula Pate Seawell, 77, died Sept. 9, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Mount Elam Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Tuesday night at Rogers Funeral Home in McColl, S.C. Born in Marlboro County, she was a daughter of the late Boyd and Hassie Goins Pate. She was a member of Mount Elam Baptist Church and a homemaker. Surviving are two sons, Wayne Seawell, of Bennettsville, S.C., and Donald Seawell, of King; two sisters, Kathleen Perkins, of Bennettsville and Joyce Long of Charlotte; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Louvene S. Evans.

STEELE

Mrs. Edna Grace Oram Steele, 92, died Sunday evening at the Brian Center. She was born in Boston, Mass., Feb. 5, 1909, to William H. Oram and Elizabeth Scully Oram. Mrs. Steele moved to Winston-Salem in 1960. She developed a close relationship with a circle of friends in Ohio, San Francisco and here in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Steele was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church. Preceding her in death were her husband, Marcus G. Steele, in 1981; and her son, W. Gerard Francis, in 1993. Surviving are her daughter-in-law, Patricia Francis; her five grandsons, Marc G. Francis, and wife, Rebecca, Scott R. Francis, and wife, Deidre, Kirk D. Francis, Todd J. Francis, and wife, Beth, and Douglas J. Francis and wife, Tammy; three great-granddaughters, Nicole, Casey and Kaitlin Francis; four great-grandsons, Kyle, Cameron, Dylan and Ryan Francis; and a very special friend, Arlene Currier. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Leo's Catholic Church with Father Joseph Kelleher officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or to the donor's choice. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

HAMPTONVILLE - Angel Briana Stone, infant daughter of Eddie Michael and Cynthia Anne Baity Stone, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Also surviving are a sister, Michaela Anne Stone of the home; paternal grandparents Eddie Russell Stone of Hamptonville and Dorothy Jean Shore Stone, also of Hamptonville; maternal grandparents Tommy and Charlotte Baity of Yadkinville; and maternal great-grandparents Charles and Melba Miller of Yadkinville. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Courtney Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Tim Tucker. THOMAS

CLEMMONS - Mr. Paul Robert Thomas, 73, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at The Elms at Tanglewood. He was born Oct. 12, 1927, in Forsyth County to Charlie F. and Sallie Chapel Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a member of Samaritan Baptist Church. He was a self-employed mobile home dealer and previously drove for Hennis Freight Line. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances M. Thomas; and a son, Paul Allen Thomas. Surviving are three daughters, Shirley Wood, and husband, Daniel, of Kernersville, Becky Slate, of Winston-Salem and Nancy Byerly and husband, Dolan, of Winston-Salem; a son, Charlie Thomas, and wife, Cindy, of Montevallo, Ala.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Cecil Thomas, of Pilot Mountain; and two sisters, Lillian Smith, of Wallburg and Bronnie Thomas, of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Danny Smith and the Rev. L.C. Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with military rites by District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. CLEMMONS - Mr. Roy F. Wrights, 66, died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Clemmons to William H. Wrights Sr. and Parale Moser Wrights. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Wrights served in the U.S. Air Force and was retired from the U.S. Postal Service. Surviving are his wife, Joann McClamrock Wrights of the home; four sisters, Lucille W. Wood, Onie Virginia Mcvay, Nancy Faye W. Morgan and Judith Leigh Wrights; five brothers, William Henry Wrights Jr., Harry Lee Wrights, Loyd Wrights, Allen Lorenzo Wrights and Ronald Eugene Wrights; a special aunt, Edith Smith; and a special friend, David Hauser. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory by the Rev. David Baxter. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Tuesday evening at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel and other times at the home of Lucille Wood, 2170 Lewisville-Clemmons Road. BELTON

Mrs. Thelma Joyce Belton, 79, of 4728 Southwin Drive, Winston-Salem, widow of the late Porter G. Belton, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Belton was born May 24, 1922, in Stokes County to the late Jessie and Nannie Joyce and was a retired nursing supervisor at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ronney G. Belton and Kimberly R. Harding; two granddaughters, Angela Fanelli and Christa Barnett; three great-grandchildren, Isabella Nicoletta Fanelli, Chloe Jean Fanelli and Zachary Nicolas Barnett; seven sisters, Catherine Jessup, Ruth Flynt, Shirley Mabe, Barbara Hand, Nancy Branch, Brenda Wall and Arlene Joyce; two brothers, Leonard Joyce and Harold Lee Joyce; and the oldest living member of the Porter Belton family, Ada Belton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday Oct. 3, 2001, at the Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, with services conducted by the Rev. Joe Maye. Burial will follow in the Belton family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday night at the funeral home. BONAPARTE

Infant Myah S. Bonaparte of 2001 Locust Ave. passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Winston-Salem. She is survived by her mother, Shinel Bonaparte, of the home; her father, Tyrone Eldridge, of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Imani Odom, of the home and Tyiesha Qua, of Winston-Salem; maternal grandparents, Deborah Bonaparte and Michael Bonaparte, of Winston-Salem; paternal grandparents, Margie Eldridge and Tyrone Walker, both of Winston-Salem; maternal great-grandmother, Lucille Bonaparte, of Winston-Salem; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Myah will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Burning Flame Christian Church with the Rev. Napoleon Crowell officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Garden. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. The remains may be viewed at Douthit Visitation Center, 2920 Greenway Ave., from 1 to 6 p.m. today. Arrangements in the care of Douthit Funeral Services (896-0061).
