BOYLES

Mr. Posey Garvin Boyles, 83, died at the Forsyth Medical Center Sunday morning, Sept. 30, 2001, after a lengthy period of declining health. Born March 24, 1918, in Stokes County, he was the son of the late Johnny Alexander and Lula Darnell Boyles. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters. Mr. Boyles was a longtime member of Trinity Christian Church-Disciples of Christ, and served in many positions in the church including chairman of the board, Sunday school teacher and elder. Mr. Boyles was retired from Kentucky Central Insurance Co. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army 262nd Signal Corps in the European Theatre. He served in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland and the Ardennes. He was awarded the EAMET Campaign Medal, and four Bronze Service Stars. Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Ercelle Stanley Boyles, of the home; a daughter, Peggy B. Jessup and husband, Donald, of North Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, Kenneth Wayne Boyles and wife, Jeannie, of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Ryan Alexander Boyles and wife, Kimberly, Shannon Nicole Jessup, Jennifer Anne Boyles, Donald Nash Jessup II, Richard Alan Jessup and Benjamin Aaron Boyles; and a great-grandson, Ian Alexander Boyles. Also surviving is a sister, Piney Boyles Slate, of King. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Trinity Christian Church, officiated by the Rev. Keith Marsden and the Rev. Ben Gerardy. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends and relatives from 7 to 9 this evening at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Trinity Christian Church, 4510 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

BRADHAM

Mrs. Cora Lee Curlee Bradham, 80, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at her home. She was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Anson County to William Frank and Cora Hinson Curlee. Mrs. Bradham was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. Surviving are her husband of 56 years, Walter O. Bradham, of the home; two daughters, Sue Bradham Choate and husband, Marlon "Kelly," of Mocksville and Pat Bradham Bennett of Pfafftown; three grandchildren, Kelli Choate Spaugh and husband, Christopher, of Clemmons, Matthew Todd Bennett of Clarksville, Tenn., and Mark Alan Choate of Lewisville; and a great-grandson, Zachary William Spaugh. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at North Wadesboro Baptist Church in Wadesboro with Dr. Gary Chatman officiating. Burial will follow in Anson Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and also from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at North Wadesboro Baptist Church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or to the American Red Cross for the September 11 Memorial Fund, 690 Coliseum Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106-5395. BROWN

EAST BEND - Mrs. Betty Bennett Brown, 66, of 3125 Shady Grove Road, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Sept. 9, 1935, in Stokes County to Edd and Kate Dodson Bennett. Mrs. Brown was an active member of Prospect United Methodist Church and was a member of the Yadkin Chapter 233 Order of the Eastern Star. She was retired from the Sara Lee Corp. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Uba G. Brown; and a sister, Virginia Hruska. Surviving are three daughters, Debbie and husband, Richard Newsome, of Charleston, S.C., Tammy and husband, John Cleary, of Madison and Ginger and husband, Jimmy Hailey, of East Bend; a sister, Dolly Moore, of Lawsonville; and a special grandson, Tyler Hailey, of East Bend. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Prospect United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl McArn, the Rev. Sarah Kalish and the Rev. Ben Shepherd. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. BURGESS

Mr. Albert Lee Burgess, 67, of 5320 Sunrise Terrace, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 6, 1934, to Frances and Solomon Burgess. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. where he worked as a machine operator. He was a member of Union Bethel AME Church. Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by two sisters, Lola Zimmerman, of Charlotte, and Ina Clair Brogdon, of Sumter, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Eloise Capers of Winston-Salem, and Eartha Hilliard and Julia Abraham, both of South Norwalk, Conn., and Maggie Fogler; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel with Brother Alan Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the chapel, and at other times at 1744 Lincoln Ave. The family will assemble at and leave from 1744 Lincoln Ave. Arrangements entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. KING - Peggy Thomas Cox, 66, of Ingram Drive died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, after being in declining health for two years. She was born April 9, 1935, in Stokes County to Clarence and Lora Smith Thomas. Preceding her in death was her husband, James Wayne Cox; a daughter, Barbara Jean Cox; a granddaughter, Melissa Lunsford Casey; and a sister, Wilma Brown. Surviving are five daughters, Judy (Ronald) Lunsford, of Winston-Salem, Betty (Keith) Brown and Myra Cox Hauser, both of King, Wanda Cox Kirby, of Pinnacle, and Christine (Eddie) Pabon of Thomasville; a son, Robert Wayne Cox Sr., of Shoals; 15 grandchildren, Rhonda, Tess, Bobby, Christopher, Misty, Stephanie, Joshua, Tiffany, Trinity, Donald, Teresa, Robert Jr., April, Regina and Barry Jr.; 13 great-grandchildren; her mother, Lora Smith Thomas, of King; a sister, Lillian Culler, of King; four brothers, Fred, Rupert and William Thomas, all of King and John Thomas, of Kernersville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King with Brother Don Collins officiating. Burial will follow in the Trinity United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home and other times at her home at Carolina Christian Village, Apt. 1-B, Ingram Drive, King.

GRUBBS

Mr. Obah Dallas Grubbs, 84, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Anderson Medical Center in Anderson, SC. Mr. Grubbs was born April 20, 1917, to the late Robert Henry Grubbs and Addie Hauser Grubbs. He lived all of his life in Forsyth County and was a lifetime member of New Hope United Methodist Church. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothea M. Grubbs, Nov. 27, 1995. Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and James Morrison, of Anderson, S.C.; his two grandsons, Britt A. Morrison, and Jason L. Morrison and wife, Holli, and a great-grandson, Elijah James Morrison, all of Anderson, S.C.; a sister, Mrs. Carmell Long, of Winston-Salem; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. William C. Currie. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to New Hope United Methodist Church, 5125 Shattalon Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

KEARNS

Mrs. Elizabeth Stokes Lambeth Kearns, 90, of Winston-Salem died Monday morning, Oct. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. Mrs. Kearns was born March 16, 1911, in Nemourn, W.Va., to John F. and Sallie Leona Swaim Stokes. Mrs. Kearns was a member of Hopewell Moravian Church and had retired from P.H. Hanes with 42 years service. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Ray Lambeth, in 1949 and second husband, Clyde Kearns, in 1998; also her parents; seven brothers; and two sisters. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Roger Sides; a son and daughter-in-law, G. Leon and Ann Lambeth; a granddaughter, Terri Little; a great-grandson, Ryan Little; two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hopewell Moravian Church by the Rev. Jeff Carter and the Rev. Jack Nance. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Hopewell Moravian Church, 715 Hopewell Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. LONG

ADVANCE - Mrs. Cleo Anderson Long, 84, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at her home. She was born Feb. 14, 1917, in Alleghany County to the late Donley Vance and Venie Brinegar Anderson. Mrs. Long was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and was a member of Trinity Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Thomas Long, in June 1975. She is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Carpenter, of Advance, Marie Templeton, of Winston-Salem and Margie Feimster of Pfafftown; a son, Thomas A. Long, of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lura Keene, of Quarryville, Pa., and Ruby Barnes, of Ridgeway, Va.; and a brother, Rudy Anderson, of Eden. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Patricia F. Garner and the Rev. John Rights. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

MARTIN

Mrs. Dorothy L. "Deedee" Martin of Winston-Salem, widow of Richard Martin, died at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit Sept. 22, 2001. She was born June 9, 1907. Mrs. Martin retired from the New York office of Cone Mills after 40 years of service. She was a member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, the senior group of O.W.L.S., the Shepherd's Center and at one time was secretary of the AARP Winston-Salem Chapter. She served as a volunteer at the Wake University Baptist Medical Center as long as her health permitted. Survivors include her devoted sister and best friend, Ruth L. Erickson of Winston-Salem; her devoted nieces, the Rev. Gail Cafferata and her husband Robert of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Barbara Haynes and her husband John of Mount Airy; grandnieces Lisa Zurn and her husband Derek of Irving, Texas, Beth Etringer of Charlotte and Heather Cafferata of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and grandnephews James Etringer and Belton Haynes, both of Mount Airy. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Howard Backus, the Rev. Sealy Cross and the Rev. Gail Cafferata officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, 2575 Parkway Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. McAFEE

BOONVILLE - Mr. Edwin Stanley McAfee Sr., 73, of Johnson Street passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at his home. He was born April 22, 1928, in Greenville, Maine, to the late John and Amanda Dahlen McAfee. Mr. McAfee worked with Sara Lee Corp. and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II. Surviving are his loving wife of 50 years, Joan McAfee, of the home; a son, Edwin S. (Mary) McAfee Jr., of Bangor, Maine; a daughter, Deborah (Ronnie) Call, of Hamptonville; two grandchildren, Angela (Roger) Call, of Hamptonville, and Timothy McCann Jr., of Bangor, Maine; four great-grandchildren, Chelsey McCann, Taylor McCann and Chance Sapp, all of Hamptonville, and Mandy Jo McCann, of Bangor, Maine; a brother, Freddy; two sisters, Esther and Dorothy; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. McAfee was preceded in death by four brothers. His funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Gentry Family Chapel by the Rev. Stewart Roten. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville.

MOORE

Walter Lyn Moore Jr., was called home Sept. 30, 2001, at his home. He was born Jan. 5, 1912, in Danville, Va. He was the youngest of four children born to the late Walter Lyn Moore Sr. and Rosa Garner Moore. Walter moved to Winston-Salem at an early age. He attended the public schools in Winston-Salem. He accepted Christ at an early age. He joined the First Baptist Church in the late '50s. Mr. Moore was married for 59 years to Georgia Gwyn Moore, who preceded him in death. Those touched by this loss are a sister-in-law, Mrs. Lois G. Moore; a nephew, Lennie Moore; godchildren Mr. and Mrs. K. C. Dobbins, of Pfafftown, and Josephine Flousnoy, of Baltimore, Md.; caregiver Marian Vera Scales; and a host of friends. Walter was a dedicated worker at Hedgepeth Dry Cleaners where he retired. He was a member of the Men's Ministry of First Baptist Church and Just Us Neighbors Club. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Wendell Johnson officiating. The family will meet with friends from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the First Baptist Church Kitchen Fund, 700 Highland Ave., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. PARRISH

Mrs. Emmy Lou Hart Parrish, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Orange, Va., the daughter of Joel Cecil Hart and Polly Shellhorse Hart. Mrs. Parrish spent her childhood in Santa Cruz, Brazil. She attended St. Margaret's School and Hollins College. She served in the Waves in World War II. She was active in the Democratic Party, the Children's Little Theater, the Winston-Salem Junior League, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Salem cemetery officiated by the Rev. Donald Goodheart. Mrs. Parrish was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hewes Parrish, in 1987, and her son, Joseph Hewes Parrish Jr. in 1983. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cecily Parrish Murray and Mrs. Ellen Parrish Jackson, both of Winston-Salem; six grand-children, Brookes Hart Parrish Unguris, Joseph Hewes Parrish III, Amy McIlvain Powell, Ellen Dodge McIlvain, Emily Allen Jackson, and William Logan Jackson III; and two sisters, Mrs. Bettie Hart Miles of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mrs. Virginia Hart Reid of Charlottesville, Va. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who for the last 30 years has been affectionately called "Memaw." Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes. Research Foundation, 1401-B Old Mill Circle, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or to the charity of the donor's choice.

PORTER

EAST BEND - Mr. John Lee Porter, of 5316 Macedonia Church Road passed away Friday, Sept. 28, 2001, at Yadkin Nursing Care. He was a native of Yadkin County and was a member of Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church. He is survived by five daughters, Hallie Marie Callands, Vester (Herbert) Allen and Virginia Lola (Larry) Glenn, all of Winston-Salem, Mamie (Rickie) Miller, of Bethania and Shelia (Michael) Sales, of Boonville; four sons, Billy Lee (Mildred, and James Allen Porter, both of Winston-Salem, Ollie (Susan) Porter, of Jonesville and Harrison (Stephanie) Porter, of Pfafftown; 34 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the East Bend Baptist Church where the Rev. Dr. James L.E. Hunt will officiate. Interment will follow in the Benbow Chapel AME Zion Church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 8 at East Bend Baptist Church. SHULER

Mrs. Alice Lee Peddycord Shuler, 82, formerly of South Main Street, widow of Lester Olon "Brub" Shuler Sr., died at the home of her daughter Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Home Moravian Church by the Rev. Lehoma Bain Goode and Dr. D. Wayne Burkette. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. Mrs. Shuler was born in Forsyth County June 12, 1919, a daughter of Azile Kimball and Austin Carl Peddycord. She lived all her life in Winston-Salem and was a lifelong member of Home Moravian Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Raymond Hege, of Richmond, Va., and Linda and Kent Davis, and Beverly and Bennett Davis, all of Clemmons; a son and daughter-in-law, Olon and Sydney Shuler, of Pfafftown; four grandchildren, Paul (Deidre) Davis, Chris (Dana) Davis, Robin (Barry) Newland, and Lisa (Robert) Watson; two great-grandchildren, Cole Jackson Davis and Rebekah Ann Davis; and a brother, Andrew Jackson (Louise) Peddycord, of South Charlestown, W.Va. The family would like to thank Mrs. Shuler's loving and faithful caregivers, Carolyn Bright and Debbie Sheek. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel and at other times at the home of Beverly Davis. TILLEY

Mrs. Peggy Louise Woods Tilley, 71, of Winston-Salem died Monday morning, Oct. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 23, 1930, in Stokes County to William Olie and Hartie Pearl Woods. Mrs. Tilley was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and worked for Hanes Knitting, Sears Catalog Center in Greensboro and Catherine's in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Olin Tilley Sr. Surviving are a daughter, Vicki K. Tilley, of the home; two sons, Jim Tilley, of Graham, and Tony (Susan) Tilley, of Wilson; two loving granddaughters, Katy and Megan Tilley; two sisters, Annie Sheppard, of Pleasant Garden, and Pansy Mabe, of Sandy Ridge; several nieces and nephews; and many special friends. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sanctuary Refurbishing program, c/o Fellowship Baptist Church, 1075 Teague Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107. WAUGH

PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. Grace Sprinkle Waugh, 83, of 3620 Grandview Club Road died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Springwood Care Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Forsyth County to the late Clinton E. Sprinkle and Mary Mock Sprinkle. A graduate of Old Richmond High School and Davis Hospital School of Nursing in Statesville, she was a very devoted and caring nurse. On Feb. 7, 1943, she married the Rev. R. Paschal Waugh and was a deeply supportive and loving wife, sharing actively in Paschal's ministry for over 40 years in several United Methodist churches in the Greensboro, Asheville, Charlotte and Winston-Salem areas. Grace and Paschal shared 53 wonderful years of marriage until his death Sept. 8, 1996. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, David Paschal Waugh; and a brother, C. Elwood Sprinkle. Survivors are a daughter, Gloria W. Griggs, of Thomasville; a son, Dr. Randolph P. Waugh and wife, Brenda, of Lewisville; three grandchildren, Brian Waugh, Mark Waugh and Kathryn Waugh, all of Lewisville; four sisters, Virginia Sprinkle and Martha Conrad of Pfafftown, Alma Rose Sink, of Kernersville and Allene Hutchinson of Greensboro; a brother, H. Vance Sprinkle, of Pfafftown; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Maple Springs United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Symanski and Dr. Randolph P. Waugh officiating. Interment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. At other times, friends are welcome to visit the home of Randy and Brenda Waugh in Lewisville.
