WILCOX
ELKIN - Mrs. Bessie Irene Wilcox, 81, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wilcox was born May 29, 1920, in Surry County to Fletcher and Sena Marie Mickle Wall. Mrs. Wilcox was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She was also a homemaker and a loving mother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Warner Wilcox; and three sisters, Dorothy Wall, Louise Bell and Elsie Makas. Survivors include two daughters, Linda Wilmoth, of Elkin and Diane Myers, of Lexington; a brother, Fletcher "Sonny" Walls Jr., of Elkin; a sister, Mary Lee Talley of Hamptonville; three grand-children, Ronnie Wilmoth, Travis Myers and Brandon Myers; and two great-grandchildren, Amber and Bailey Wilmoth. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Don Stephens. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Wilcox will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin.
WILLIAMS
Mrs. Dicy Simmons Williams, 81, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Williams was born May 18, 1920, in Elkin to the late Walter G. Simmons and Lelia Woodruff Simmons. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Williams had been employed by Southern Bell Telephone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Harrison Williams. Surviving are her two sons, John L. Williams and wife, Carol, and Barry D. Williams, all of Winston-Salem; her grandson, Anthony Williams, and her great-granddaughter, Tiffany Williams, both of Wallpole, Mass. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel with the Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
WOOTEN
STONEVILLE - Emma Hill Wooten, 88, of 380 Valleyfield Road died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Reidsville Rehabilitation Center. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. She was born in Walnut Cove. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters, Martha Hazelwood of Stoneville and Lola Smith of Mayodan; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home. HANES
Mr. Taree Tarn Hanes, 84, of 742 Morsinie St. died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001. He was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Gastonia to the late Frank and Mary Hanes. Mr. Hanes was educated in the Winston-Salem public-school system and was a retired employee of Salem College. He was a former member of Beview Gospel Singers; a deacon at First Waughtown Baptist Church; a former member of the Happy Hill Prayer Band; and a faithful member of the First Waughtown Gospel Choir until his health failed. Mr. Hanes was married to Ella Mae Reid, a union which lasted 63 years to which eight children were born. Two children preceded him in death, Syveria Hanes-Bishop and Aaron R. Hanes. He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Reid Hanes; five sons, Taree of York, Pa., Cleotist (Johnnie Mae) of Winston-Salem, Robert and Melvin of Butner; and the Rev. Franklin O. (Billie) of Durham; a daughter, Annette B. Hanes of Durham; a son-n-law, the Rev. Dennis Bishop of Winston-Salem; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends; and a devoted niece, Amy Swepson. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at First Waughtown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Franklin O. Hanes officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour before the services from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. The family can be contacted at the residence. HATCHER
Mr. James "Dad" Hatcher, 77, died at his residence. Mr. Hatcher was born June 15, 1924, in Surry County to James Melvin and Hadie Johnson Hatcher. He was an auto-body repairman and a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Hatcher was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1134. Surviving are a brother, Gray Hatcher of Winston-Salem, and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Stoney Knoll United Methodist Church cemetery, East Bend. Mr. Bill Teague will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
HILLIARD
Mr. Omari Azim Bomani Hilliard, 20, of 2323 Gerald St. passed away Sept. 10, 2001, in Winston-Salem. He was born March 4, 1981, in Denver, Colo., to McKinley Morgan and Shakirah J. Shabazz. He attended the local public schools of Forsyth County. He was employed by McKinney Drilling Co. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Luella M. Hilliard, and his grandfather, Jerry Hilliard. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Shakirah J. Shabazz; his father, McKinley Morgan; a daughter, Ajanile M. Hilliard; two brothers, Decarl A. Hilliard and Khaleel A. Hilliard; a sister, Okimbe Hilliard; an uncle, Anwar Bomani; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Frances S. & Jerry C. Gilmore Memorial Chapel. MOCKSVILLE - Mr. James W. "Jimmy" Jones, died at his home Sept. 12, 2001. He was born Jan. 27, 1946, to John W. "Jay" and Alene Shoaf Jones. He is survived by his parents; a sister, Jane J. Foster; and nephews Ryan (Mandy) Foster and Derek Foster. Special, loving caregivers are Monica Jordon, Joyce McClam-rock, Janet Blair, Deana Webb, and Barbara McDaniel; and a special friend is George Boger. KURTH
KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Michael Allen Kurth Jr., 37, of 1857 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001. Mr. Kurth was born in Washtenaw County, Mich., a son of Michael A. Kurth Sr. and the late Patricia Barber Kurth. Mr. Kurth was vice president of the AAR of North Carolina Inc. and was the field-operations manager for the company. He raced car No. 49 in the late-model stock-car series for Kurth Racing of Kernersville. Surviving are his wife, Sandra Steele Kurth; two sons, Eric Michael Kurth and Holden Anthony Kurth, all of the home; his father and stepmother, Michael A. and Brenda B. Kurth of Belews Creek; a sister, Michelle Kurth Strickland of Kernersville; a brother, Bradley Lewis Kurth of Kernersville; and his paternal grandmother, Mavis Kurth of Benzonia Mich. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. Mrs. Mary Ramsey Mills, 73, of Winston-Salem died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at her home. She was born Aug. 16, 1928, in Sumter, S.C., to Robert B. and Lucille Brabham Ramsey. Mrs. Mills was of the Baptist faith and was co-owner and operator of Mills Decorating. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Richard Mills; and a sister, Mildred Foxworth of Florence, S.C. Surviving are a son, Mike Mills and wife Glenda; a daughter, Patricia M. Martin, all of Winston-Salem; six grandchildren, Ricky S. Martin, Kevin N. Martin, Angie Hicks, Raymond W. Martin and Glenn and Bobby Mills, all of Winston-Salem; and eight great grandchildren. Mrs. Sarah Thompson Mungo of 1445 Brookwood Court, Apt. A., departed this life Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 12, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Mungo was a native and lifelong resident of Winston-Salem, where she attended the public schools. She was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, where she formerly served on the nurse's, missionary board and Sunday-school department. In the community, Mrs. Mungo was formerly a member of the Patterson Avenue Flower Club. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at New Bethel Baptist Church, with Dr. Jerry Drayton officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Virginia Loflin Parks, 77, of 1120 Barclay Terrace, Winston-Salem, passed away Sept. 12, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born May 22, 1924, in Randolph County to Alva E. and Ethel Davis Loflin. She retired in 1975 from the N.C. School of the Arts as a bookkeeper. She was an active member of Ardmore United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the sanctuary choir for 35 years. She taught in the children's division for many years and assisted with the children's choir. She served as treasurer of the United Methodist Women for several years and was active in the Christian Fellowship Class. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Mack B. Parks of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol P. Young and Roy A. Young of Matthews and Gloria P. Marcus and Joel Marcus of Durham; three grandchildren, Benjamin F. Young and Samuel A. Young of Matthews and Rachel Marcus of Durham; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne Loflin and Louise Loflin of Sophia; a sister and brother-in-law, Eddith L. Wagoner and John R. Wagoner of High Point; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Treva L. Pearman and Iris L. Cashatt. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Ardmore United Methodist Church, Winston-Salem, with Dr. Frank Grice and the Rev. Lisa Wishon officiating. MOCKSVILLE - Mr. William Henry Patterson, 69, of N.C. Highway 801 N. died at his home Sept. 11, 2001, after an extended illness. A native of Davie County, he was a retired Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Mary Hatcher Patterson of the home; four sons, William H. Patterson I and Jonathon Patterson, both of the home, Gerald Patterson of Winston-Salem and Ronald Patterson of Killen, Texas; three daughters, Christal Busbee of Mocksville, April Patterson of Winston-Salem and Bonnie Busbee of Aiken, S.C.; his mother, Thelma Cain of Mocksville; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church in Davie County, with the Rev. S.F. Hairston officiating. Mr. Gene P. Peeler, 79, formerly of 625 Sixth St., passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mr. Peeler was a resident of Oak Summit Nursing Home. Born June 20, 1921, in Gaffney, S.C., to the late Mr. Jasper Peeler and Mrs. Luvenia Littlejohn Peeler Smith, Mr. Peeler attended the local public schools there. Mr. Peeler was a World War II veteran, having received two Bronze Stars and the Victory Medal. He was preceded in death by his six brothers, Hollin, Jasper, Rob, Jimmy "HotShot" and a set of twins; and four sisters, Minnie, Grace, Verlene and Eunice. He leaves to cherish his memory five daughters, Eunice McLeod, Tracy McLeod, Wanda Thompson, Cheryl McLeod and Denise Dyson; two sisters, Mrs. Laura Rankins and Mrs. Sarah Davidson, both of Gaffney, S.C.; a host of nieces, including four special nieces, Mary Douglas, Brenda Pratt, Patricia Dickey, and Terri Green, all of High Point; and nephews, cousins and friends. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home. ADVANCE - Mrs. Nell Potts Poole, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Advance United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Childers, the Rev. Dennis Marshall and the Rev. Danny Poole officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family request memorials be considered for Advance United Methodist Church, P.O. Mrs. Poole was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Davie County to the late Archie Edward and Alice Wood Potts. She was a graduate of Shady Grove High School class of 1947 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Advance United Methodist Church and very active in the church and community. Survivors include her husband, Albert Mitchell Poole of the home; a son, Danny (Darlene) Poole of Advance; a daughter, Janey Poole (Jim) Brooks of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Allison Linette Poole, Natalie Danielle Poole and Angela Marie Poole; three sisters, Wilma Phelps of Advance, Doris Gwyn of Lexington and Rosalie Allen of Florida; and two brothers, Virgil Potts and Joe Potts of Advance. She was preceded in death by a brother, Gilbert Potts. Eaton Funeral Home is serving the family.
REID
Mr. William McKinley Reid, 82, of Highway 109, Davidson County, died Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 12, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Jan. 22, 1919, in Surry County to Joseph Vernon and Letha Atkins Reid. Mr. Reid was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign and was awarded four Bronze Stars, Distinguished Unit Badge and Good Conduct Medal. He was a farmer and also retired from Thomasville Furniture Co. with 31 years of service. After his retirement, he was employed with Lowe's in High Point for several years. Mr. Reid was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Griffin Reid; and a son, Jerry Wayne Reid. Surviving are a son, Howard Reid and wife Phyllis of Denver; two daughters, Donna Davis and husband John of Mocksville and Alice Reid Stuckey and husband Ken of Nebo; two sisters, Josephine Stoltz of Winston-Salem and Sally Johnson of High Point; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Shady Grove United Methodist Church by the Rev. Michael Goode. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
