RICHARDS

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Robert Richards, 86, of 141 Richards Road, the husband of Mrs. Lorraine Park Richards, passed away, Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County, Mount Airy. Mr. Richards was born in Surry County on March 1, 1915, the son of the late W.W. and Viola Golding Richards. Mr. Richards was a retired self-employed tobacco and dairy farmer and a member of the Beulah United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lorraine Park Richards of the home, a daughter, Mary Jane Stockton of Mount Airy; a grandchild and spouse, Kristi Key and husband Ken Key of Charlotte; three great-grand-children, Haley Key, Tyler Key and Grayson Key, all of Charlotte; a sister, Viola Pardue of Seattle, Wash.; a brother and sister-in-law, Swanson and Ruth Richards of Mount Airy; six nieces; and three great nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Richards was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ruth Richards and Livvie Rodgers; a brother, John Richards; and two nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Alton Bledsoe and the Rev. Dennis Bud Cameron. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday night at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. SHOUSE

Mrs. Helen Kiser Shouse, 80, of 4435 Gracemont Drive died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. A native of Winston-Salem, she was born Aug. 23, 1921, to the late Robert J. and Lessie Whicker Kiser. A member of Beck's Baptist Church for more than 60 years, Mrs. Shouse was a former Sunday-school teacher, a member of the Womans Missionary Union and sang in the church choir. She was a past president of the Old Town Woman's Club. Preceding her in death were a son, Tim Shouse; a grandson, Ed Shouse; and her sister, Edith Kiser Downs. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, O.E. Shouse Jr.; two sons, Robert E. Shouse and wife, Helen Carter of Fayetteville and A. Lynn Shouse and wife, Pat of Stuart, Va.; a daughter, Suzanne S. Montgomery of Kernersville; grandchildren Holly S. Williams and her husband Warren, Andrew Lynn Shouse and his wife Elaine, Lea Shouse and Alan Shouse, all of Stuart; James Holt of Knoxville, Tenn., Hunter Montgomery of Kernersville, Penny Shouse of Farmingdale, N.Y. and Justin Brozic and Jessica Brozic of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and four great-grand-children. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, conducted by Dr. Ray Hamilton. Burial will follow in Beck's Baptist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

SIMMONS

Mr. Thomas Lee Simmons of 921 Gillette St. passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born July 25, 1943, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Jonah Oscar Simmons and the late Clara Virginia Moore Simmons. He was of the Baptist faith and was a retired employee of National Linen Service Inc. He was also preceded in passing by a brother, George Simmons. He leaves to cherish his memory four sons, Christopher, Bryant, Timothy and Jason Simmons, all of Winston-Salem; his father, Jonah Oscar Simmons; brothers Johnny Simmons (Sylvia) and Donnie Simmons, all of Winston-Salem; sisters Marie Simmons and Annie May; a very devoted friend, Josephine King; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. L. S. Werts presiding. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. (Russell)

WILLIAMS

Mrs. Maggie Brown Williams, 80, of 850 Camel Ave. passed away Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at her residence unexpectedly. She was a native of Winston-Salem, born July 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Clarence Brown and Maggie Bradden Brown. Maggie was a faithful member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church, where she served on the senior choir and the pastor's aide for many years until her health began to decline. However she continued to serve on the nurse's board until her death. Maggie was also very active in the community. She was a member of the Camel Avenue, Temple Street and Rich Avenue Club, a member of the Bowen Park Co-Operative Community Club and was chaplain of the Mary Lee Comer Flower and Savings Club. She was preceded in death by a daughter; a brother; and five sisters. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, Howard Thomas Jr. (Alice), Richard E. Thomas and Willie Earl Green; two daughters, Jean Green and Saundra Green, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Willie Mae Barrow of Greensboro and Eloise B. Ford of Philadelphia, Pa.; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the Bethlehem Baptist Church with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Interment will be in the Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

BOWMAN

Mr. Dewey A. Bowman, 77, of 1244 Arbor Road, Apt. 309, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Arbor Acres. He was born Dec. 27, 1923, in Forsyth County to Arthur Alexander and Reba Newman Bowman. Mr. Bowman was a member of Love's United Methodist Church in Walkertown, where he was active in the Methodist Men, the Stephen Ministry and Meals on Wheels. He was also a member of the Walkertown Lions Club. He retired from Unique Furniture Co. 15 years ago after 30 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Charley (Billie) Bowman of the home; two daughters, Faye Bowman of Charlotte and Judy Sell and husband Calvin of Olin; three grandsons, Joshua Sell and wife Leigh Ann, Luke Sell and wife Ashley and Ben Sell; two great-grandsons, Peyton and Coleman Sell; two brothers, Joseph Bowman and wife Lois and Harvey Bowman and wife Kathy of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Delorea Yokely and husband Earl of Walkertown and Virginia Kirby of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Love's United Methodist Church by the Rev. James T. Webb Jr. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Love's United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. CLARK

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Douglas Logan Clark, 73, of 640 Carolina Ave. died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Hospital. He was born May 30, 1928, the son of Rowland and Helen Logan Clark. Mr. Clark was an electrical engineer and a veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corp. He was member of the National Wildlife Association and of the Baptist faith. Mr. Clark was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Althea Clark. Surviving are three daughters, Cindy Lincoln of Boston, Mass., Pamela Clark of Braintree, Mass., and Kimberly C. Brown of New Port Richey, Fla.; three sons, Craig L. Clark of South Weymouth, Mass., Donald Kolbe of Baltimore, Md., and Scott L. Clark of Yadkinville; 19 grand-children; and two great-grand-children. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Yadkin Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Stuart Rolen officiating. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Mackie-Reavis Fun-eral Home in Yadkinville. Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home of Yadkinville is serving the family.

HANES

Mr. Taree Tarn Hanes, 84, of 742 Morsinie St. died Monday, Sept. 10, 2001. He was born Sept. 15, 1916, in Gastonia to the late Frank and Mary Hanes. Mr. Hanes was educated in the Winston-Salem public-school system and was a retired employee of Salem College. He was a former member of Beview Gospel Singers; a deacon at First Waughtown Baptist Church; a former member of the Happy Hill Prayer Band; and a faithful member of the First Waughtown Gospel Choir until his health failed. Mr. Hanes was married to Ella Mae Reid, a union which lasted 63 years to which eight children were born. Two children preceded him in death, Syveria Hanes-Bishop and Aaron R. Hanes. He is survived by his wife, Ella Mae Reid Hanes; five sons, Taree of York, Pa., Cleotist (Johnnie Mae) of Winston-Salem, Robert and Melvin of Butner; and the Rev. Franklin O. (Billie) of Durham; a daughter, Annette B. Hanes of Durham; a son-n-law, the Rev. Dennis Bishop of Winston-Salem; 23 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends; and a devoted niece, Amy Swepson. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at First Waughtown Baptist Church, with the Rev. Franklin O. Hanes officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour before the services from noon to 1 p.m. at the church. The family can be contacted at the residence. MOCKSVILLE - Mr. James W. "Jimmy" Jones, died at his home Sept. 12, 2001. He was born Jan. 27, 1946, to John W. "Jay" and Arlene Shoaf Jones. He is survived by his parents; a sister, Jane J. Foster; and nephews Ryan (Mandy) Foster and Derick Foster. Special, loving caregivers are Monica Jordon, Joyce McClam-rock, Janet Blair, Deana Webb, and Barbara McDaniel; and a special friend is George Boger. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday Sept. 14, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, with the Rev. Bill Shoaf and the Rev. Bobby Swain officiating. NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Larry Edward "L.E." Love, 72, of Woodhaven Road died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at his home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Arbor Grove Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kenneth Anderson and the Rev. Hillery Wood officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Love was born Dec. 8, 1928, in Wilkes County to Rosevelt and Grace Call Love. He was owner and operator of Love Enterprises and was a member of Arbor Grove Baptist Church. Mr. Love was a member of the Elks Lodge in North Wilkesboro and Ruritan Club in Roaring River. He was active in the North Carolina Home Builders Association. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Ward Love of the home; two daughters, Sandra Waringen of Wilkesboro and Susan Holland of North Wilkes-boro; three sons, Larry Steve Love of North Wilkesboro Roger Lee Love of Salisbury and Randy Ward Love of Rockingham; four sisters, Mary Lucy Davis and Eloise Dimmette, both of Ronda, and Ethel Sparks and Louise Mathis, both of Roaring River; a brother, R.B. Love of Wilkesboro; and seven grandchildren. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Thursday night from 7 until 9. MOCKSVILLE - Mr. William Henry Patterson, 69, of N.C. Highway 801 N. died at his home Sept. 11, 2001, after an extended illness. A native of Davie County, he was a retired Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Mary Hatcher Patterson of the home; four sons, William H. Patterson I and Jonathon Patterson, both of the home, Gerald Patterson of Winston-Salem and Ronald Patterson of Killen, Texas; three daughters, Christal Busbee of Mocksville, April Patterson of Winston-Salem and Bonnie Busbee of Aiken, S.C.; his mother, Thelma Cain of Mocksville; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church in Davie County, with the Rev. S.F. Hairston officiating. Burial, with military rites, will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. at the church.

POOLE

ADVANCE - Mrs. Nell Potts Poole, 71, died Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be Friday (time announced later) at Advance United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. They request memorials be considered for Advance United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 2021, Advance, NC 27006 or to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Mrs. Poole was born Sept. 28, 1929, in Davie County to the late Archie Edward and Alice Woods Potts. She was a graduate of Shady Grove High School class of 1947 and was a homemaker. She was a member of Advance United Methodist Church and very active in the church and community. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gilbert Potts. Survivors include her husband, Albert Mitchell Poole; and a son, Danny (Darlene) Poole of Advance; a daughter, Janey Poole (Jim) Brooks of Mocksville; three grandchildren, Allison Linette Poole, Natalie Danielle Poole and Angela Marie Poole; three sisters, Wilma Phelps of Advance, Doris Gwyn of Lexington and Rosalie Allen of Florida; and two brothers, Virgil Potts, Joe Potts of Advance.

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Mabel Sparks Royal, 85, of Rena Road passed away, Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Royal was born June 20, 1916, in Yadkin County to Carl and Etta Dobbins Sparks. Mrs. Royal was a homemaker and a member of Swan Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Radie Royal; two brothers, Wade and Cullie Sparks; two sisters, Earlee Eller and Ruby Stroud; and a niece, Jan Key. Survivors include five nieces, Ella Mae Cheek of Jonesville, Lucy Lawrence of Winston-Salem, Carol Cheek of Jonesville and Linda Poplin and Brenda Pardue, both of Hamptonville; and six nephews, Bill Sparks of Winston-Salem, Don Stroud of Lone Hickory, Ted Sparks of Hampton-ville, David Sparks of State Road, Tony Sparks of Hampton-ville and Ronnie Sparks of Elkin. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Swan Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Nat Thompson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Royal will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. The family received friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. ADVANCE - Mr. DonaldO'Gene "Noody" Smith Sr., 61, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 28, 1940, in Davie County to Joseph and Geneva Howell Smith. Mr. Smith owned and operated Don Smith Tile Co. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother, Joseph Smith Jr. Surviving are his wife of the home, Mrs. Joyce Tucker Smith; a son, Donald O. Smith Jr. (wife Ginger) of Advance; a daughter, Cynthia S. Charest (husband Scott) of Charlotte; his mother, Mrs. Geneva Howell Smith of Mocksville; six grandchildren; and four sisters, Christine S. Craven, Claunette S. Gregory, Cherry S. Beaver, all of Advance, and Pamela S. Purvis of Lawsonville. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum Chapel, with Mr. Hubert Dunn and Mr. Marty Carter officiating. Entombment will follow. Mrs. Alice Broadway Tarrant, 60, formerly of 803 Utah Drive, Apt. A passed away Sunday, Sept. 9, 2001, at the Lutheran Services Inc. after a period of illness. She was a native of Winston-Salem born March 8, 1941, the daughter of the late Jones Kirby Broadway and Sadie Harley Broadway. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1958 and a graduate of Forsyth Technical College, School of Nursing. She is survived by her husband, James Tarrant; a very loving and devoted son, Jamey Tarrant; a grandson, Jamez Tarrant; two brothers, Jones K. Broadway Jr. and James R. Broadway (Gloria); five sisters, June Ragins, Sadie B. Williams, Ramona B. Wheeler, Eliza H. Broadway and Memoree Broadway; several nieces and nephews; two very devoted nieces, April M. Broadway and Jamaro J. Williams; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, in the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home. WALLACE

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Michael Dale Wallace, 46, of Leanne Lane, died unexpectedly Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Eaton Funeral Chapel with Dr. David Gilbreath officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately after the services Thursday night. A committal service will be held at 11 Friday morning in Eatons Baptist Church cemetery. The family requests memorials be considered for the Davie County ARC, c/o Kathy Erb, 1653 Jericho Church Road, Mocksville; or the Milling Manor, 253 Milling Road, Mocksville, NC. 27028. Mr. Wallace was born in Rowan County, April 4, 1955, to the late Ada Ann Atkinson Wallace and L.G. "Bud" Wallace of Mocksville, and had 29 years of service with Ingersol/Rand Corp. He was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Farmington Masonic Lodge, was a board member of Milling Manor and was a past president of the Davie County ARC. He was preceded in death by his mother, Ada A. Wallace in 1981; and a brother, Willie Gray Wallace in 1997. Surviving are his father and stepmother, Bud and Sara Walker Wallace of Mocksville; a daughter, Leanne Michelle Wallace of Mocksville; two nephews, Wilson Wallace, and Weston Wallace, both of Mocksville; former wife and mother of Leanne Michelle Wallace, Diane B. Wallace of Mocksville; his devoted girlfriend, Dawn Froelich of Mocksville; and his stepgrandmother, Mae Walker of Mocksville. Mr. Wallace was a most loving and dedicated father. Mike leaves behind many relatives and friends who shared his love for life.

WILSON

Ms. Frances Wilson, of 1679 Ashley Lane School Circle died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001. She was born in Pageland, S.C., on Sept. 9, 1944, to the late Leget Wilson and Lucille McBride Wilson. She moved to Winston-Salem 33 years ago. She was an employee at Johnson's Fabrics. Survivors include, seven children, Jimmy Taylor, Frances L. Davidson (the Rev. Willie) and Priscilla Taylor, all of Winston-Salem, George Taylor, Jeffrey Taylor, Reginald E. Taylor, and Timothy Taylor, all of the home; a special goddaughter, Donna Howell of Winston-Salem; six sisters, Bonnie Rhome, Thelma Wilson, Rosa W. Johnson (Ronnie), Pearlie W. McLaurin (Reginald), Mary W. Porter (Thomas) and Carol Ann Wilson, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Baby Ray Wilson, Freddie Wilson (Patricia) and LeVon Wilson, all of Winston-Salem, Roosevelt Wilson of Concord; 50 grand-children; 18 great-grand-children; a devoted grandchild, Charles McIntyre of Winston-Salem; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Bethlehem Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leonard Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday from 2:30 to 3 p.m., 30 minutes before the services. The procession will assemble and leave from the home, 1679 Ashley Lane School Circle en route to the church at 2:10 p.m. Friday. Johnson-Howard-Robin-son Home of Memory is in charge of all services and arrangements.
