BOYD

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Joy Flynn Boyd, 86, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born Aug. 30, 1915, in Surry County to Blanche Kiser Flynn and Sidney Monroe Flynn. Mrs. Boyd was a lifelong member of the former Muddy Creek Church of Christ, now known as First Christian Church of Clemmons. She was employed with Hanes Knitting Co. for 40 years. Surviving are a son, James G. Boyd (wife Linda R.), of Clemmons; a granddaughter, Diane B. Pitts, and husband, Dwayne, of Clemmons; two great-grandchildren, Matthew D. Pitts and Colten J. Pitts; and a sister, Ann Gough, of Winston-Salem. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at First Christian Church of Clemmons (formerly Muddy Creek Church of Christ), 6143 Frye Bridge Road in Clemmons, with Ollis Baggett, minister, officiating. Entombment will follow in the Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church, and following the committal service at Westlawn. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BURGESS

Mr. Albert Lee Burgess, 67, of 5320 Sunrise Terrace, died Thursday, Sept. 27, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 6, 1934, to Frances and Solomon Burgess. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. where he worked as a machine operator. He was a member of Union Bethel A.M.E. Church. Mr. Burgess was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. He is survived by two sisters, Lola Zimmerman, of Charlotte, and Ina Clair Brogdon, of Sumter, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Eloise Capers, of Winston-Salem, and Eartha Hilliard and Julia Abraham, both of South Norwalk, Conn.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Frances S. and Jerry C. Gilmore Jr. Memorial Chapel with Brother Alan Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service, from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the chapel, and at other times at 1744 Lincoln Ave. The family will assemble at and leave from 5320 Sunrise Terrace. LANCASTER

Mr. Frank Newton Lancaster of Westfield Avenue died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Sept. 16, 1924, to the late Pallie D. and N. Moir Lancaster. He was a 1941 graduate of Hanes High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of Home Moravian Church and served there in many capacities. He was an employee of AT&T for 36 years and American Greetings for 10 years. Frank was a member of the Elks Club #449 and the Piedmont Boat Club. A recipient of Order of the Arrow, he served as a Boy Scout leader for many years. Frank also served as Democratic judge of voting at Miller Park Recreation Center for 30 years. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Alece Parker Lancaster; three sons, Harry Clifton Lancaster and wife, Ann, of Jamestown, Charles Frank Lancaster and wife, Marie, of Hamptonville, and William Moir Lancaster of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Nell Hart Lancaster Shaffer and husband, Brad, of Huntersville; a sister, Betty Lancaster Williard and husband, David; sister-in-law, Charlotte Parker Inabinet; brother-in-law, Kenneth L. Brady; grandchildren, Craig Lancaster and wife, Sherry, Jimmy Wallace, Sally Lancaster, and Nathan and Erin Shafer; a great-granddaughter, Caitlin Lancaster; stepgranddaughter, Lynn Shore and husband, Wayne; stepgrandson, Tony Wood and wife, Melissa; and eight great-stepgrandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Home Moravian Church with burial in God's Acre. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler's Main Street. Memorials may be made to the Home Moravian Church Book of Remembrance.

LANKFORD

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Effie Lillian Aaron Lankford, 93, of Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons, died Saturday, Sept. 29. She was born July 15, 1908, in Stokes County to Columbus and Lucy Smith Aaron. Mrs. Lankford was a charter member of Faith Chapel on Motor Road in Winston-Salem, remaining a member for 71 years. She was a retired inspector for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 431/2 years of service. She will be forever loved and missed by her family and friends, but now abides with her Lord and her first child, France Mae Lankford. Preceding her in death were her husband, Milton Lankford, and other family members. Surviving are two daughters, Harriett Stewart and Bobbie Dull; two sons, Timothy C. Lankford and Wayne Aaron; a kind and loving daughter-in-law, Brenda, wife of Timothy Lankford; a brother, Earl Aaron; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Nellie Crews Ball and Maude Hughes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel conducted by the Rev. Elmer Flynt and the Rev. Ramey Craig. Burial will follow at Woodland cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Voglers Reynolda Road Chapel.

MEADOWS

Mrs. Dorothy "Dot" Landingham Meadows, 74, of Winston-Salem, a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001. She was born Dec. 30, 1926, in Forsyth County to the late Fred G. and Ina Blakely Landingham. Mrs. Meadows was a charter member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, T. L. Meadows Jr., of the home; two daughters, Beverly Bennett and husband, Gerry, of Winston-Salem, and Debbie Meadows of Charlotte; a granddaughter, Hillary Blevins, of Charlotte; a grandson, Beau Blevins, of Charlotte; and a sister, Bet Robertson, of King. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Kaser-Odor officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. NELSON

SANDY RIDGE - Mrs. Luezettie Ashby Nelson, 88, of 2530 Ralph Joyce Road in Sandy Ridge, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at her home. She was born in Stokes County Jan. 26, 1913, a daughter of the late Thomas Levi and Mary Elizabeth Mabe Ashby. She was retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Lake View Baptist Church. Mrs. Nelson is survived by two daughters, Betty Ann (Thurman) Mabe of Sandy Ridge, and Margie G. Nelson of Madison; two sons, the Rev. Billy Edgar (Zella) Nelson of Madison, and James Thomas (Hazel B.) Nelson of Madison; a sister, Lillie Taylor of Danbury; 12 grand-children, 24 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grand-children; and two special caregivers, Lorraine and Joyce. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Nelson, the Rev. Bobby Wilmoth and the Rev. Rayton Puckett officiating. Burial will be in the North View Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 1 at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, and other times at the home.

PARRISH

Mrs. Emmy Lou Hart Parrish, of Winston-Salem, died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 23, 1921, in Orange, Va., the daughter of Joel Cecil Hart and Polly Shellhorse Hart. Mrs. Parrish spent her childhood in Santa Cruz, Brazil. She attended St. Margaret's School and Hollins College. She served in the Waves in World War II. She was active in the Democratic Party, the Children's Little Theater, the Winston-Salem Junior League, and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2 at Salem cemetery officiated by the Rev. Donald Goodheart. Mrs. Parrish was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hewes Parrish, in 1987, and her son, Joseph Hewes Parrish Jr. in 1983. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Cecily Parrish Murray and Mrs. Ellen Parrish Jackson, both of Winston-Salem; six grand-children, Brookes Hart Parrish Unguris, Joseph Hewes Parrish III, Amy McIlvain Powell, Ellen Dodge McIlvain, Emily Allen Jackson, and William Logan Jackson III; and two sisters, Mrs. Bettie Hart Miles of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mrs. Virginia Hart Reid of Charlottesville, Va. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who for the last 30 years has been affectionately called "Memaw." The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ellen P. Jackson (14 Kent Park Circle), from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday Oct. 1. Memorials may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Velna Frances Hull Pegram, 79, of 1980 Highway 66 South, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Pegram was born in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Cornelius and Dora Dillon Hull. She was a retiree of the Kayser-Roth Hosiery Co. Surviving are her husband, James L. Pegram, of the home; two sons, Jimmie Pegram and wife, Brenda, of High Point, and Sammy Pegram and friend, Mary Anne Donawho, of King; a sister, Mamie Bennett, of Belews Creek; grandchildren Justin Pegram, Amanda Johnson, Michelle Pegram, and Marcus Pegram and wife, Heather; stepgrandchildren, Amy Everhart, Amanda Clendenon and Christy Wyatt; great-stepgrandchild, Dessie Everhart; and special neighbors, Ina Amos, and Johnny and Linda Amos. A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday at Kernersville Wesleyan Church by Pastor Phil Hulen and Dr. David Patterson. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. PHILLIPS

ADVANCE - Mr. William VanDyke Phillips, 67, died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born June 4, 1934, in Forsyth County to VanDyke and Ella Mae Lee Phillips. Mr. Phillips was a member of Center Grove Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He was retired from Coca-Cola Bottling Co. after 35 years of service. Mr. Phillips was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Cornell University. Surviving are his wife, Jo Ann Owen Phillips, of the home; a son, Mike Phillips, and wife, Julie, of Roanoke, Va.; two daughters, Kim Hedges and husband, Scott, of Advance, and Debbie Frezell and husband, John, of Jamestown; and four grandchildren, Valerie Cain, Matt Phillips, John Michael Phillips, and Taylor Hedges. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Center Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Hicks and the Rev. Denny Sinclair officiating. Entombment will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel. Mrs. Alice Lee Peddycord Shuler, 82, formerly of South Main Street, widow of Lester Olon "Brub" Shuler Sr., died at the home of her daughter Sunday morning. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Home Moravian Church. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. Mrs. Shuler was born in Forsyth County June 12, 1919, a daughter of Azile Kimball and Austin Carl Peddycord. She lived all her life in Winston-Salem and was a lifelong member of Home Moravian Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Raymond Hege, of Richmond, Va., and Linda and Kent Davis, and Beverly and Bennett Davis, all of Clemmons; a son and daughter-in-law, Olon and Sydney Shuler, of Pfafftown; four grandchildren, Paul (Deidre) Davis, Chris (Dana) Davis, Robin (Barry) Newland, and Lisa (Robert) Watson; two great-grandchildren, Cole Jackson Davis and Rebekah Ann Davis; and a brother, Andrew Jackson Peddycord, of South Charlestown, W.Va. The family would like to thank Mrs. Shuler's loving and faithful caregivers, Carolyn Bright and Debbie Sheek. TOWE

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Nettie Jackson Towe, 90, of 539 West Virginia St. Extension in Mount Airy, passed away Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mrs. Towe was born in Surry County June 21, 1911, the daughter of the late Samuel P. and Rosie Childress Griffin. She was retired from the hosiery mill industry and was a member of Midway Baptist Church. Survivors include a son and two daughters-in-law, Jim and Judy Jackson, of Ararat, Va., and Sarah Jo Jackson, of Mount Airy; six granddaughters and spouses, Linda and Donald Lee, and Peggy and Ricky Hall, all of Mount Airy, and Lisa Thompson, Teresa Jackson, Janie and Chris Easter, and Deborah and Carl Hawks, all of Ararat, Va.; seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Towe was preceded in death by her first husband, James W. Jackson; her second husband, J. Fulton Towe; a daughter, Peggy Jackson; a son, Billy Gray Jackson; and 16 brothers and sisters. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 2, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Junior Easter and the Rev. Tony Griffin with burial in the Salem United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy.

VICKERY

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Samuel Stevenson Vickery died Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001, at his home near North Wilkesboro following an extended illness. A native of Wilkes County, he was born Aug. 23, 1919, to the late Gertrude Stikeleather and Milus Augustus Vickery. Mr. Vickery was active in many civic and charitable organizations throughout his life, and took a special interest in the Wilkes Art Gallery, Lees-MacRae College, and North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. He helped found the Wilkes Art Gallery, where he served as volunteer director and trustee for many years. At Lees-MacRae, Mr. Vickery was a trustee and was involved in various developmental work, including service as the college alumni director on a volunteer basis in 1983-1984. Additionally, Mr. Vickery held several posts within North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, serving as a deacon and an elder for numerous terms and also working as a youth adviser. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years and received the Silver Beaver Award from the Old Hickory Council in 1962. A graduate of Davidson College (1941) and of Lees-MacRae (1939), he worked briefly in the textile industry following college. Mr. Vickery served with the U.S. Army Air Corps Air Transport Command from 1942 to 1946, spending most of his assignment during World War II on Ascension Island. Following his military service, he joined the postal service, from which he retired as a superintendent in 1972. An accomplished artist, he spent many productive years in retirement with his watercolor artwork and sculpture. He was committed to his tree farm, where he lived for over 50 years, and to civic affairs. Mr. Vickery's Knollwood Tree Farm for many years attained the steward level of management as recognized by the American Forestry Association. Among his other civic credits are the Wilkes Jaycees, where he was a founding member and served as president, and Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Vickery is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Louise Hudson Vickery; a daughter, Mary Martha Smoak, and husband, Sam, of Winston-Salem; a son, Robert W. Vickery, and wife, Linda, of North Wilkesboro; and two grandchildren, Amanda N. Smoak, of Chapel Hill, and William S. Smoak, of Davidson. The family will receive friends following a memorial service to be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorials be considered for North Wilkesboro Presbyterian Church, Lees-MacRae College, Wilkes Art Gallery, or to a charity of the donor's choice.

BROWN

EAST BEND - Mrs. Betty Bennett Brown, 66, of 3125 Shady Grove Road, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Sept. 9, 1935, in Stokes County to the late Edd and Kate Dodson Bennett. Mrs. Brown was an active member of New Home United Methodist Church and was a member of the Yadkin Chapter 233 Order of the Eastern Star. She was retired from the Sara Lee Corp. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Uba G. Brown; two sisters, Virginia Hruska and Bessie Bennett; and two brothers, Paul Bennett and Moir Bennett. Surviving are three daughters, Debbie and husband, Richard Newsome, of Charleston, S.C., Tammy and husband, John Cleary, of Madison and Ginger and husband, Jimmy Hailey, of East Bend; a sister, Dolly Moore, of Lawsonville; and a special grandson, Tyler Hailey, of East Bend. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the New Home United Methodist Church by the Rev. Carl McArn, the Rev. Sarah Kalish and the Rev. Ben Shepherd. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Lynn Holt Brown, 41, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Dec. 21, 1959, in Pittsylvania County to Wallace Warren and Lee Kahle Holt. Mrs. Brown was a member of Reynolda Pres--by-terian Church. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Brown, and three children, Chelsea, Emily and Kahle Brown, all of the home; parents Wallace and Lee Holt, of Danville, Va.; a sister, Vickie Grimes, and husband, Larry, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Michael Holt, and wife, Karen, of Danville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Alan Wright. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. JONESVILLE - Mrs. Gracie V. Collins, 83, passed away Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Mrs. Collins was born April 13, 1918, in Yadkin County to James and Flora Haynes Vestal. She was a homemaker and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. Those preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Robert H. "Bob" Collins; and three sisters, Miner V. Marshall, Lillian V. Groce and Myrtle V. Cass. Surviving are seven children, James A. (Kathy) Collins, of Chattanooga., Tenn., Geneva Ann (Freddie) Minton, of Concord, Carole C. (Harold) Prevette, of Jonesville, Mary C. (Gray) Macy, of Greer, S.C., Linda C. (Howard) Biggers, of Charlotte, Steve O. (Donna) Collins, of Jonesville and Thomas L. Collins of Hamptonville; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; three sisters, Mallie V. Weatherman, Angie V. Groce and Jessie Chappell; and a brother, James (Odessa) Vestal Jr. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Fall Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Thompson, the Rev. Everette Carter and Dr. Leon Mikles. Mrs. Collins will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow at Elkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Share-A-Home, 2800 Woodruff Road, Boonville, NC 27011. GALAX, Va. - Velva Winesett Cox, 92, the widow of Arthur Clarence Cox, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Waddell Nursing Home. She was born in Alamogordo, N.M., to Alec and Mattie Felts Winesett. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Snow Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Ernie Smith and the Rev. Eddie Beck officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Loree and Ed Large, of Hillsville, Va., Dorothy and L.D. Davis, of Galax, Sherry Harless, of Cherry Valley, Calif., Virginia and Odie Bowers, of Galax, Pat and Brad Hough of LaPine, Ore., and Betty Cox of Galax; her sons and daughters-in-law, Sonny and Sylvia Cox, of Sweet Home, Ore., Bill and Shelby Cox, of Galax, Jim and Joan Cox, of Ennice, Clarence Lee and Barbara Cox, of West Jefferson, and Arthur and Faye Cox, of Galax; a sister, Betty Lou Payne, of Mount Airy; a brother, Franklin Pierce Winesett, of San Andreas, Calif., a half-brother, Franklin D.
