EAST BEND - Mrs. Velma McKnight Slater Doub, 88, 5912 Old Highway 421, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 13, 1913, in Forsyth County to Henry and Carrie Warden McKnight. Mrs. Doub was preceded in death by her husbands, Enoch Ray Slater and John Doub; six sisters, Ruth, Sally, Alta, Alice, Etta and Evelyn; four brothers, Wess, Wiley, John and Elcie; two daughters, Carrie Louise and Baby Slater; a baby son, Enoch Eugene; and Alma Slater. She was a member of Enon Baptist Church and was a homemaker. She loved making quilts and working with her hands. She is survived by her children, Betty (Thomas) Saunders, of Scottsdale, Ariz., Thomas Walter (Mozelle) Slater, of Cosby, Tenn., and John Henry (Velma) Slater, Alice (Dwain) Carter and Della (C.A. "Bud") Hobson, all of East Bend; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; six stepgreat-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Enon Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark Elmore. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Enon Baptist Church Building Fund, 6321 Old Highway 421, East Bend, NC 27018.

DUNCAN

DANBURY - Mr. James Hubert Duncan, 65, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Memorial Hospital. He was born in Stokes County Jan. 24, 1936, to Hardie and Lula Nelson Duncan and was a farmer. He is survived by his wife, Mozelle Mabe Duncan; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kay and Ed Kalb, of Orlando, Fla., Susan and Mark Lancaster, of Critz, Va., and Tina and Thomas Lawson, of Lawsonville; three sisters, Peggy Bullins, of Danbury, Dorothy Hutchens, of Lawsonville and Hazel Watson of Walkertown; a brother, Buddy Duncan, of Walnut Cove; and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Nelson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Chester Montgomery and the Rev. Arthur Reid officiating. Burial will be in the Snow Creek Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home and other times at the home.

HAAS

ADVANCE - Mrs. Mildred Hibner Haas, 94, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Meadowbrook of Davie. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, conducted by Father Michael Butner. Mrs. Haas was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Haas. She is survived by a son, Kenneth J. Haas, and his wife, Marilyn, of Advance; four grandchildren, Greg Haas, Mike Haas, Mary Spangenberg and Suzanne Haas; and three great-grandchildren, Sydney Haas and Daniel and Suzanne Spangenberg. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel is serving the Haas family.

KIRK

LEXINGTON - Lucy Kathleen Smith "Kat" Kirk, 84, of Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation for Lexington, formerly of Bethesda Road, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at 5:40 a.m. at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation for Lexington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, where she was a member, conducted by the Rev. Roger Weisner. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Kirk will remain at Piedmont Funeral Home until taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. She was born July 3, 1917, in Davidson County, daughter of William David and Gertrude Surratt Smith and was a lifelong resident of Davidson County. She was a retired hairdresser. She served as a church organist until Sept. 18, 1988, at Ebenezer United Methodist Church and was a member of the Women's Chapel Class at her church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Kirk; four sisters; and five brothers. Surviving are daughters Iris K. Hyatt and husband C.L. of Winston-Salem and Carolyn K. Smith and husband Terry of Lexington; grandchildren Abby Fedor and husband J.D. of Roanoke, Va., Andria Smith of Lexington and Zachary Smith of Kernersville; and a great-granddaughter, Maty Kathleen Fedor of Roanoke, Va. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times will see friends at their respective homes. Also the family will see friends in the church fellowship hall following the committal service. The family requests memorials are directed to the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Building Fund, c/o Danny Byerly, 227 Huntingdon Road, Lexington, NC 27295.

SHULER

Mrs. Alice Lee Peddycord Shuler, 82, formerly of South Main Street, widow of Lester Olon "Brub" Shuler Sr., died at the home of her daughter Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Home Moravian Church by the Rev. Lehoma Bain Goode and Dr. D. Wayne Burkette. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. Mrs. Shuler was born in Forsyth County June 12, 1919, a daughter of Azile Kimball and Austin Carl Peddycord. She lived all her life in Winston-Salem and was a lifelong member of Home Moravian Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Alice and Raymond Hege, of Richmond, Va., and Linda and Kent Davis, and Beverly and Bennett Davis, all of Clemmons; a son and daughter-in-law, Olon and Sydney Shuler, of Pfafftown; four grandchildren, Paul (Deidre) Davis, Chris (Dana) Davis, Robin (Barry) Newland, and Lisa (Robert) Watson; two great-grandchildren, Cole Jackson Davis and Rebekah Ann Davis; and a brother, Andrew Jackson (Louise) Peddycord, of South Charlestown, W.Va. The family would like to thank Mrs. Shuler's loving and faithful caregivers, Carolyn Bright and Debbie Sheek. Memorials may be made to the Book of Remembrance at Home Moravian Church. Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel is serving the family.

SISK

SHERRILLS FORD - Mr. Howard Clifton "Curly Howard" Sisk, 71, of 7023 Tallent Court, formerly of Forsyth County, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at his home. A native of Cleveland County, he was born Feb. 1, 1930. He was an announcer and account executive at KTC Broadcasting "The Net" consisting of WCSL, WGNC, WLON and WOHS, and did the Curly Howard Swap-Shop show. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Winston-Salem and an honorary member of New Bethel Church of the Nazarene. Curly Howard was an advocate of children doing many fund-raisers. He was the chairman of the March of Dimes participating in many events such as the retardation funds and wheelchair foundation and numerous fund-raising marathons, one, for example, he pulled a young boy in a wagon from Kernersville to Winston-Salem for charity. He was also a civic leader for many organizations. He worked in the Winston-Salem area from 1964 to 1982 and received the Disc Jockey of the Year Award for two years. He was also employed at WKTE Radio in King, WKBX Radio in Winston-Salem and was a co-owner of WSMX Radio in Winston-Salem. He was the promoter and emcee of many country music shows for the Winston-Salem and Greensboro Coliseums. Prior to radio, Curly worked as a country-music entertainer as guitarist and vocalist. He was affiliated with the "Grand Ole Opry" with such artists as Ray Price, Clyde Moody, Don Reno, Red Smily, Smily & Kitty, Jim Eanes and Don Gibson (who he began his career at WOHS Radio in Shelby). In 1945, Curly joined Don Gibson, Jim Barber, Ned Costner and Milton Scarborough singing together as "Sons of the Soil". He was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Nettie Sisk; and six brothers, Lee, Paul, Earl, Ireland, Ostelle and Guynell Sisk. He is survived by his wife, Gerri Butler Sisk of the home; four sons, Gregory Bryan Sisk of Greenville, Gary Sisk, Ricky Sisk and Butch Sisk, all of Danville, Va.; a daughter, Vickie Sisk Budder of Danville; two sisters, Syble Sisk Patterson and Shirley Sisk Stinchcomb, both of Shelby; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Jeff Beckett, Dr. Don McSwain and Calvin Hastings officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Clay-Barnette Funeral Home and other times at the home of Shirley Stinchcomb, 700 W. Warrant St. Memorials may be made to New Bethel Church of the Nazarene, 706 Hamrick St., Shelby, NC 28150.

SPRINKLE

Mrs. Margaret Ricketts Sprinkle, 80, formerly of 4416 Carrie Ave., died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001. She was born Nov. 22, 1920, in Anson County to Bunyan D. and Mary Hudson Ricketts. Mrs. Sprinkle was a member of Woodland Baptist Church and married to the late Seabert Brown Sprinkle, Sr. Surviving are two daughters; a son; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister; and two brothers. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Woodland cemetery by the Rev. Tim Gammons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

TONEY

Mr. Joseph Toney, 78, of 324 E. 14th St. passed away on Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born July 16, 1923, in Lee County, S.C., to the late Charles and Liza Toney. Joseph was of the Baptist faith and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds-Archer, Plant #40. He is survived by his wife, Mary Clark Toney, of Winston-Salem; two sons, Joseph Toney Jr., of Winston-Salem and Lee Toney, of Bronx, N.Y.; a daughter, Hortense P. Nelson; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two stepsons, Johnny Black, of Winston-Salem, and Gregory Clark, of Durham; a brother, Golden Toney, of Bronx, N.Y.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Rosetta Clark; two sisters-in-law, Betty and Alberta Clark; two brothers-in-law, Fredrick Clark and Donald Clark (Ladonna); and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. WEST JEFFERSON - Mr. John Henry Watson, 69, died Tuesday morning at Watauga Medical Center, Boone. He was a native of Ashe County and a member of West Jefferson First Baptist Church. He was instrumental in the Blue Ridge Cable Vision coming into Ashe County and was the maintenance supervisor for the Public Works for the Town of West Jefferson. He is survived by his wife, Joan Phillips Watson; two sons, John W. Watson, of Duncansville, Pa. and Brett Watson, of Copenhagen, Denmark; five sisters, Kitty South, of West Jefferson, Shirley Stone, of North Wilkesboro, Shelby Watson, of West Jefferson, Nancy Miller, of Crumpler and Lola Stanley of Winston-Salem; and six grandchildren. The family will be receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 Thursday evening at the Boone Family Funeral Home, West Jefferson. A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the West Jefferson First Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the West Jefferson City cemetery. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Thelma Swaim West, 81, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001. She was born Sept. 19, 1920, in Forsyth County. She married William R. West in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1992. She was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Kernersville. Along with her husband, her parents, Ruth Swaim and Edgar Pitts, preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Donna West Purcell, and her husband, Wade, of Belews Creek, and Jeannie West May of Kernersville; a son, Chris West, of Kernersville; a sister, Kaye Nance, of Greensboro; and four grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel with Dr. Charles Carver officiating. Interment will follow at the Gardens of Memory cemetery in Walkertown. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. STONEVILLE - Emma Hill Wooten, 88, of 380 Valleyfield Road died Sunday, Sept. 30, 2001, at Reidsville Rehabilitation Center. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Fair Funeral Home Chapel. She was born in Walnut Cove. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters, Martha Hazelwood of Stoneville and Lola Smith of Mayodan; a son, Sam Wooten of Eden; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Fair Funeral Home and other times at the home. BROWN

Mrs. Lynn Holt Brown, 41, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Dec. 21, 1959, in Pittsylvania County, Va. to Wallace Warren and Lee Kahle Holt. Mrs. Brown was a member of Reynolda Presbyterian Church. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Brown, and three children, Chelsea, Emily and Kahle Brown, all of the home; parents Wallace and Lee Holt, of Danville, Va.; a sister, Vickie Grimes, and husband, Larry, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother, Michael Holt, and wife, Karen, of Danville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. at Reynolda Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Alan Wright. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. DAMON

Mr. Walter Henry Damon, 70, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mr. Damon was born Oct. 10, 1930, in Schenectady County, N.Y. to Frederick Hollis and Edna Johnson Henry Damon. He was a graduate of Nottingham High School in Syracuse N.Y. and N.Y. State College of Forestry. Mr. Damon was a U.S. Army veteran and a computer systems analyst for General Electric. Surviving are his wife, Carrie Wright Damon of the residence; two daughters, Joanna Lee Forrest and Amelia Colette Damon of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Brittany Leanne Forrest and Johnathon Marcel Carrazco of Winston-Salem; a sister, Joanna Lee Damon of Portland Maine; and two brothers, Arthur Hollis Damon of New York, N.Y. and Robert Bruce Damon of Syracuse, N.Y. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, in the Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel, by the Rev. Steve Sigmon. Entombment will follow in the Parklawn Mausoleum. MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Crystal Dawn White Easter, 32, of 130 Cardigan Lane passed away at her home Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001. Mrs. Easter was born in Surry County May 26, 1969, the daughter of Benton Elmer White and the late Maxine Puckett White and was a homemaker. Surviving are her husband, Arville Ray Easter II of Melbourne, Fla.; three daughters, Elizabeth Easter, Amanda Easter and Iris Easter, all of Mount Airy; her father, Benton Elmer White of Mount Airy; and a brother, Craig White of Mount Airy. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at the Little Mountain Baptist Church, with services conducted by the Rev. Billy Watson and the Rev. Craig Edwards. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday night at the Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy, where her body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

FOGLEMAN

Miss Ruth Ellen Fogleman, 91, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Springwood Care Center of Forsyth. Miss Fogleman was born Oct. 23, 1909, in Gibsonville to William Floyd and Alice Gardner Fogleman. She lived most of her life in Winston-Salem, residing on Everett Street until 1960 when she moved to 2233 Westfield Ave. She lived there until Jan. 15, 2001 at which time she entered Vienna Village Assisted Living Facility in Pfafftown. Miss Fogleman graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School "Latin Course" in 1927 and from Salem College in 1931. She was one of four to attend the 1931 Class Reunion held last spring. Miss Fogleman was an active member of Ardmore Baptist Church. She served in the church media center for 43 years and was active in both the adult and senior adult church choirs. She also played the piano for the toddlers' Sunday school class. Miss Fogleman was employed by Brown & Ruffin, which later became Wachovia Insurance Co. She held several offices, including President of the Winston-Salem Association of Insurance Women. Miss Fogleman was predeceased by a great-niece, Leonore Pownall. She is survived by two nieces, Phyllis Pownall, of White Post, Va., and Wilma Myers, of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Floyd F. Fogleman, of Marietta, Ga.; a great-niece, Deborah Pownall Nunez; and a great-nephew, Harry Pownall. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Ardmore Baptist Church with the Rev. Ty Talton. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service. A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at the Fairmont cemetery in Fairmont. Memorials may be made to either the Ardmore Baptist Church Music Ministry, 539 Irving St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or the Special Ministers Fund of Ardmore Baptist Church. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

GWYN

ALEXANDRIA, Va. - Mr. Owen Gwyn Sr., 72, a longtime resident of Vienna, Va., and formerly of Elkin, passed away after a short illness Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Northern Virginia Community Hospital. Mr. Gwyn was born Jan. 3, 1929, in Surry County to Paul Perkins and Alice Harris Gwyn. Mr. Gwyn was retired from AT&T and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elkin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ann Gwyn. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Owen and Roxane Gwyn Jr. of Chapel Hill and John Gwyn and Debbie Beach of Vienna, Va.; a stepson, Michael Rogers of Springfield, Va.; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul and Nancy Gwyn of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Evan and Gareth Gwyn and Ryan Beach; a nephew, David Gwyn; and two nieces, Marya Upchurch and Kelley Diamond. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, at Hollywood cemetery by the Rev. Sandy Giles. The family will receive friends from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin prior to the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Elkin Fire Department, 226 N. Bridge St., Elkin, NC 28621.
