HAAS

ADVANCE - Mrs. Mildred Hibner Haas, 94, died Friday, Sept. 21, 2001, at Meadowbrook of Davie. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Friday, Oct. 5, 2001, conducted by Father Michael Butner. Mrs. Haas was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Haas. She is survived by a son, Kenneth J. Haas, and his wife, Marilyn, of Advance; four grandchildren, Greg Haas, Mike Haas, Mary Spangenberg and Suzanne Haas; and three great-grandchildren, Sydney Haas and Daniel and Suzanne Spangenberg. There will be no visitation at the funeral home. Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel is serving the Haas family.

LAWSON

KING - Mr. Ben Thomas Lawson Sr., 74, of 145 Cobblestone Lane died Monday afternoon at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Ridgeview Memorial Gardens. Mr. Lawson was born in Spray, was a Shriner, a Mason with Leaksville Lodge #136 and a World War II Navy veteran. He was a salesman of manufactured home for 35 years. Surviving are a son, Ben T. Lawson Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; two aunts, Pauline Price Lawson of Martinsville, Va., and Kate Jefferson Lawson of Rising Sun, Md.; special friends, Frank Williams of East Bend, Johnny Dodson of King and Terry Landingham and Chester Landingham of Winston-Salem; and numerous cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Sam Lawson; his mother, Pearl Lawson; his stepmother, Hortense Lawson; a brother, Nathan Lawson; and two sisters, Louise Lawson Bennett and Alma Lawson East. The visitation was held from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Fair Funeral Home.

MOSER

Mr. Billy Wayne Moser, 51, of Winston-Salem, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001. He was born Jan. 27, 1950, in Forsyth County to John Calvin and Frances Gantt Moser. Mr. Moser was a member of the VFW on South Main Street and AmVets Post #777. He loved NASCAR racing, fishing and was an avid golfer. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle and was loved by his many friends. Surviving are a daughter, Angie Moser French and husband Rick of Winston-Salem; a son, John Allen Moser of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Danielle and Hailey French; a grandson, Jacob Evan Moser, all of Winston-Salem; a sister, Jackie Moser Garner of Winston-Salem; a brother, Ronald Jeffrey Moser and wife Susan of Rural Hall; and two nieces, Kim Peacock and husband Andy of Germanton, and Tracy Gray and husband Tony of Woodbridge, Va. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Agape Faith Church, with Pastor J.B. Whitfield officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

PENLAND

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Rachel Kimball Penland, 96, of Clemmons Village II, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Dec. 15, 1904, in Iredell County to Thomas Lafayette and Annie Evans Kimball. Mrs. Penland was a member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted M. Penland in September 2000; seven brothers; and three sisters. Surviving are a daughter, India Mabe of Clemmons; three granddaughters, Glenda Jordan Talley, Amy Jordan Kincaid and Penny Jordan McCarter; four great-grandchildren, Lillian Kincaid, Jordan Kincaid, Michael Kincaid and Rosemary McCarter; and a sister, Emma Allen of Arbor Acres. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Maple Springs United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Randy Waugh officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. Mrs. Penland will lie in state at the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to Maple Springs United Methodist Church Building Fund, 2569 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106.

RUMLEY

Mr. Robert "Bob" Walter Rumley, 89, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. He was born Nov. 5, 1911, in Forsyth County to Eugene and Carrie Parrish Rumley. He was retired from Briggs-Shaffner Co. and was a member of First Assembly of God. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was wounded in North Africa. He was a member of VFW Post 1134 and the DAV, Chapter 9. He was preceded in death by a son, Dale Rumley; a daughter, Martha Jean; his first wife, Lucy Haley Rumley; three brothers, Joe, Charles and John Rumley; and a sister, Elizabeth Anderson. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth W. Rumley; two brothers, E.W. Rumley of Rural Hall and Richard Rumley and wife Violet of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Ruth Weavil of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory, by the Rev. Paul Riggs Sr. military rites will be by VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

SCHAEFER

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Blanche Mae Schaefer, 92, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at White Oak Manor. Services will be held at Forsyth Memorial Park in Winston-Salem at a later date. Mrs. Schaefer was born March 25, 1909, in Forsyth County to the late Frank and Rose Cooper. Blanche was an interior decorator with Sears who enjoyed gardening during her retirement. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Her survivors include her son, Gary Long of Charlotte; her sister, Kathleen Sapp of Winston-Salem; and grandchildren David Long, Cooper Long, Mark Joyce and Amanda Long. Arrangements are in the care of Heritage Funeral Home of Indian Trail.

SHIRLEY

Mrs. Almeda Vernon Shirley, 92, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Meadowbrook Terrace of Winston-Salem. She was born March 29, 1909, in Surry County to Abner Joseph and Mary Durham Vernon. Mrs. Shirley was a member of Salem Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerney Baxter Shirley Sr.; and her son, Gerney Baxter Shirley Jr. Survivors include a son, Thomas Macon Shirley Sr. and wife Mary of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Mary Catherine Martinez and husband George of Gardenia, Calif.; two grandsons, Macon Shirley and Scott Shirley of Winston-Salem; and six great-grandchildren, Christopher, Ellen, Salem, Taylor, Devin and Sara Shirley. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, by the Rev. Curtis Whaley. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel.

ASHBEY

Mrs. Ocia Ashbey, 72, of Reynolda Park Assisted Living died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born May 14, 1929, in Forsyth County to David Columbus and Daisy Margaret Edwards Whit. Mrs. Ashbey was preceded in death by her husband, William Troy Ashbey; and a grandson, Wayne Myers. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Ernie and Evelyn Ashbey of Columbia, S.C.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Joyce and Michael Billings and Kay and Wayne Myers, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruby and Howard Letcho of Hampstead, and Pansy Crews of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Tammy (Richie) Marion, Wendy (Rick) Levan, Tim Myers, Lyn (Norman) Ashbey, Julie (Ben) Byerly, Melissa (Paul) Wagoner, and Sharon Myers and husband Donnie; seven great-grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Pastor Ed Sears. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. BURNS

Mrs. Ella Lee Dixon Burns, 93, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Springwood Care. Mrs. Burns was born June 15, 1908, in Yadkin County to Abraham and Nancy Shore Dixon. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and a retired employee of Camel City Dry Cleaners. Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by her husband, John Shelton Burns Sr.; two brothers, J.L. Dixon Sr. and Goughfrey Dixon; and two sisters, Gertie Driver and Cloie Groce. Surviving are a daughter, Carolyn B. Gentry (Bill) of Winston-Salem, a son; J.S. Burns (Selwyn) of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Karen Burns of New Mexico, Robert Gentry of Winston-Salem and Gary Gentry (Tracy) of Durham; three great-grandchildren, Tracy Joyce, Adam Crenshaw and Dana Gentry; and a sister-in-law, Pearl Dixon. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. BURWELL

Mr. Danny Edward Burwell Sr., of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Aug. 19, 1922, in Big Creek, W.Va., to Ora and Lottie Lucas Burwell. Mr. Burwell was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Helen Burwell of the home; four daughters, Nita Saylor of Winston-Salem, Jean Daum and husband Conrad of Roanoke, Va., Barbara Seemar and husband Kurt of Cumming, Ga., and Pam Burwell of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sons, Danny Burwell Jr. and wife Phyllis of Laurel Springs, and Jim Burwell and wife Cindy of Columbia, S.C.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Margaret Bostic and husband Claude of Conyers, Ga., Lena Hobbs and husband Norman of Winston-Salem, Juanita Lusk and husband Harold of Burnesville, and Bernice Hauth of Black Mountain. He was preceded in death by two brothers. Funeral services will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Tony Brown officiating. A graveside service will held be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. DIETZ

Mrs. Jeanne Davis Dietz passed away Wednesday, Oct, 10, 2001. Born Feb. 13, 1922, in Bridgeport, Conn., she was the loving wife of Robert William Dietz for 55 years; the mother of Robert William Dietz Jr., of Columbia, S.C. and George L. Dietz, of Kent, Ohio. She is survived by her husband; sons; daughters-in-law Linda and Julie; and grandchildren Amy, Rebecca, Kathryn, Eric, Michael and Meghan. She was an active member of St. Timothy's Episcopal Church and a volunteer at Crisis Control Ministry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Crisis Control Ministry at 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101. The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church Chapel.

FULLER

Mrs. Betty Adair Atwood Fuller, 73, of Winston-Salem passed away Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 22, 1928, in Jacksonville, Fla., to Thomas E. and Felice Morgan Atwood. Mrs. Fuller was a 1950 graduate of Montreat College, a retiree of the Employment Security Commission as well as an elder in the Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Fuller loved gardening, being the pastor's wife and was an exceptional mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her son, Thomas A. Fuller. Surviving are her husband, Dr. Harold E. Fuller, Pastor Emeritus at Parkway Presbyterian Church; three children, E. Scott Fuller (wife Andrea), of Georgia, John M. Fuller (wife Anike), of Mocksville, and Mary Beth Gray (husband Fred), of Charlotte; a daughter-in-law, Martha Phillips, of Richmond, Va.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and two brother-in-laws, Rodger Herndon (wife Sandra), of Florida, and Munford Fuller (wife Judy), of Florence, S.C. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Parkway Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dan Wilkers officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. HAIRSTON

Mrs. Jessie Mae Alston Hairston, 76, of 101 Median Court, Winston-Salem, formerly of 1722 Whites Mill Road, High Point died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Hairston was born Sept. 9, 1925, in Chatham County, Pittsboro, a daughter of the late Elijah Colester and Louise Scurlock Alston. She was a homemaker and a member of Turner's Chapel AME Church, Florence Community, where she served as the president of the Jackson Lindsey Missionary Society, the president of the steward board, communion stewardess, a member of mixed choir and a member of senior choir. Her husband, Mr. James L. Hairston Sr.; a daughter, Margie Louise Hairston; and a sister, Catherine Alston, known to many as Aunt Pink, all predeceased Mrs. Hairston. Surviving relatives are seven sons, James (Naomi) Hairston Jr. of Trinity, Julius C. Hairston, Robert S. Hairston and Rodney E. (Rhonda) Hairston of High Point, Elder Jesse K. (Elder Diann) of Clemmons, Bishop F.D. Hairston (Evangelist Sally) of Virginia, and Elder Johnnie R. (Minister Dianna) of Greensboro; three daughters, Betty H. (Thomas) Brown, Beulah H. (Shawn) Waden of High Point, and Evangelist Bonnie H. Scott of Winston-Salem; 22 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a half sister, Pearl Margaret Edwards of High Point; two brothers-in-law, Samuel (Omega) Hairston of Jamestown and Robert Webster of Greensboro; and two aunts, Margie Hairston of Jamestown and Maude Chandler of Greensboro. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Turner's Chapel AME Church in the Florence Community, High Point, conducted by the Rev. W.E. Diggs and Bishop F.D. Hairston. Burial will follow in Lakeview cemetery, Greensboro. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Turner's Chapel AME Church. Public viewing will begin at 3 p.m. at the church. At other times the family may be contacted at the homes of Evangelist Bonnie H. Scott, 101 Median Court, Winston-Salem and Mrs. Betty H. Brown, 2017 Whites Mill Road, High Point. HARRIS

ELKIN - Mr. Samuel R. Harris, 81, of Twin Oak Road, widower of Mrs. Leanna S. Harris, died Oct. 11, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Mr. Harris was born June 20, 1920, in Surry County to the late John and Leavie McCann Harris. He was a veteran of World War II. He was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. and was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters and sons in law, Leavie and Rick Freeman, of Lewisville, and Regina and Trent Seiber, of Elkin; three grandchildren, Ricky Freeman, of Burlington, and Angie Seiber and Nathan Seiber, both of Elkin; eight sisters, Ila Cockerham, of State Road, Myrtle McGrady, of Elkin, Ruby Gaines, of Bear Creek, Carol Harris, of Sanford, Mary Lee Lanley, of Greensboro, Peggy Perry, of Oxford, Ann Spicher, of Raleigh and Savannah Stout of Siler City; and four brothers, Raymond Harris, of Traphill, John Wesley Harris, of Salina, Kan., Boyd Harris, of Bear Creek, and Buddy Harris of Sanford. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Harris was preceded in death by Jamie Poplin and Jarrett Freeman. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday morning, Oct. 13, 2001, at the Mount Herman Baptist Church with services conducted by the Rev. Larry Stone, the Rev. Tim Burton and the Rev. Don Ball. Burial will follow in the Union Cross Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday night at Moody Funeral Home in Dobson, where his body will remain until time to be taken to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the service.

HODGIN

KERNERSVILLE - Saloma Reid Hodgin, 94, of 1992 Beeson Road died Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Guilford Baptist Church with Dr Richard Hipps officiating. Interment will follow in New Garden cemetery. A native of Forsyth County, Mrs. Hodgin was the daughter of James Franklin and Agnes Bodenheimer Reid. A homemaker, Saloma was an active member of Guilford Baptist Church, where she was a choir member, pianist, and member of WMU. Mrs. Hodgin also helped prepare meals for the Guilford Lions Club. In 1986, her husband, Eugene Nelson Hodgin, preceded Saloma in death. Surviving Mrs. Hodgin are her children, James N. Hodgin and Jerry E. Hodgin, of Kernersville, and Bob Hiatt of High Point; sisters Annie Mae Hines and Shelley Cude of Winston-Salem and Faith Reid of Seattle, Wash.; five grandchildren, Barry Hiatt, Randy Hiatt, Harold Hiatt, Laura Hodgin and Edward Hodgin; and six great-grandchildren, Tyler Nelson, Rustin Hiatt, Grayson Hiatt, Melody Hiatt, Jennifer Hiatt and Christa Hiatt. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Forbis & Dick Guilford Chapel, 5926 W. Friendly Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Guilford Baptist Church, Building Fund, 5904 W. Market St., Greensboro, NC 27409.

HORTON

LEXINGTON - Wanda Gail Bates Horton of 216 Ed Byerly Road died after a lengthy battle with cancer Oct. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born March 14, 1948, to Gene and Dorothy Bates of Lexington. She worked as a nursing assistant with Med-Staff until her retirement due to her health. Ms. Horton is survived by a son, Scott Miller and wife Angie of the home; a daughter, Lori Miller of Lexington; five grandchildren, Adam Miller of the home, Courtney and Tyler Miller and Brandy and Taylor Morgan; her mother, Dorothy Bates; a sister, Joyce Graham; and a brother, Rickie Bates, all of Lexington. A memorial service will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at Arrington Heights Baptist Church, 9 Freeville Circle, Lexington, officiated by Pastor Doug McGee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cancer Services Inc., 503 W. Center St., Lexington, NC 27292. The family will be at the home, 216 Ed Byerly Road, Lexington. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the family.

MILLER

DORCHESTER, Mass. - Mrs. Lillian Lou Ella Miller passed away in Dorchester on Oct. 8, 2001. She was a native of Brookstown (now Pfafftown) but resided in Dorchester for a number of years. She joined Mount Calvary Holiness Church under the late Bishop Broomfield Johnson while she was in this city prior to moving to Dorchester. She leaves to cherish her memory a sister, Mrs. Sudie M. Jones of Winston-Salem; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, in Dorchester.
