HINES

LEXINGTON - Thelma Williams Hines, 70, of Academy Drive, Lexington, died Sunday, Oct. 7, at 1:50 p.m. at her home. Mrs. Hines was born in North Truro, Mass., Aug. 14, 1931, to George Williams and Carrie King Williams. She was a former employee of the Dispatch and Central High Performance. She was a charter member and very active in the Lexington Women of the Moose Chapter 1622 and was honored with the highest degree of the College of Reagents. At Canaan United Methodist Church she was a member of the Willing Workers Class. Her husband, Horace Grey Hines, preceded her in death June 20, 1994. Surviving are a son, Terry Hines and wife Ellen of Midway; three daughters, Jean Little and husband John Little Jr., Brenda Taylor and husband Dennis Taylor and Beverly Leonard, all of Lexington; and eight grandchildren, Natalie Hines, Barrett Hines, Toby Prince, Jeremy Prince, Adam Hall, Cari Hall, Bradley Curry and Brian Leonard. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Canaan United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. Wade Childers Jr. will officiate. The burial will be at Canaan United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel and other times at the home on Academy Drive. The family would like to thank all the special friends who helped care for her during her illness. They request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Hospice of Davidson County, P.O. HOLDER

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Nova Byrd Whitesell Holder, 89, of Quality Care Home of Burlington died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health. She was the wife of the late Dwight Whitesell for 15 years and the late Durant Carlyle Holder for 24 years. She was born in Vass to the late John Edgar Byrd and the late Cora Stephens Byrd. Mrs. Holder was a member of Moncure Baptist Church and was a former registered nurse, bookkeeper and homemaker. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Pride Carson, pastor of Stony Creek Presbyterian Church officiating. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Carol Whitesell Smith and husband Jim of Burlington and Mrs. Valera Whitesell Stewart and husband Edward of Advance; stepdaughter Mrs. Beth Holder Holland and husband Mike of Apex; grandchildren Mrs. Deborah Smith Ellis and husband Ken, Laura Smith Litten, Mrs. Janet Stewart Nichols and husband Tim and Jennifer Ann Stewart; great-grandchildren Adam and Brian Bussey and Christina and Jason Litten; sisters Mrs. Dee Parker Bass of Moncure and Mrs. Doris Byrd O'Neil of Claymont, Del.; and several in-laws of the Whitesell and Holder families. She was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; five brothers; and two sisters. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home & Crematory and other times at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Carol Whitesell Smith, 2105 Stoney Creek Church Road, Burlington. HUMBERT

Mrs. Ella Lindsley Stone Humbert, 98, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, in Winston-Salem. She was born Jan. 12, 1903, in Durham. She lived her early years in Richmond, Va., and graduated from William & Mary. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Frank Humbert Jr., in 1968. Surviving are her son, William F. Humbert III (Jean) of Winston-Salem; her daughter, Lucille H. Kasefang (William E.) of Knoxville, Tenn., five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Before moving to Brookridge Retirement Home in 1997, she was a resident of Milledgeville, Ga., and Oak Island, and formerly from Leaksville (Eden). She was an active member of the Mayflower Society, DAR, UDC, Women's Club and Garden Club. Memorial services will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Davis Chapel of Wake Forest Baptist Church followed by burial services in Milledgeville on Saturday, Oct. 13. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wake Forest Baptist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.

LINTON

Mr. Walter Linton, 82, of Lilesville, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Anson Community Hospital, Wadesboro. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Bessie Chapel AME Zion Church, Lilesville. The family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home, Wadesboro.

PERROTTA

Mr. Frank John Perrotta, 83, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born April 29, 1918, in White Plains, N.Y., to Joseph and Assunta Georgini Perrotta. Mr. Perrotta was a member of St. Leo's The Great Catholic Church. He retired from the New York Central Railroad in 1979 and moved to Winston-Salem in 1983. He served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II in England, France and Germany. Preceding Mr. Perrotta in death were his parents; nine sisters; and three brothers. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Lorraine Pilla Perrotta of the home; two daughters, Suzanne Conlin and husband Lawrence of Ridgefield, Conn., and Sharon Nisi and husband Vincent of Lewisville; a sister, Genevieve Funicello of Lutz, Fla.; four grandchildren, Christopher Mansa and wife Vera of Mahopac, N.Y., Mark Mansa and wife Susan of Bethel, Conn., and Lori and Jaime Nisi of Lewisville; five great-grandchildren, Ryan, Christina, Alexa, Victoria Rose and Mark Mansa; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, at St. Leo's Catholic Church with the Rev. Kurt Fohn officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kate B. REEVES

KING - Mr. Ben "Benny" Parks Reeves, 72, of East Dalton Road died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Alleghany County to Lawrence and Fannie Atwood Reeves. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Thomas Reeves of the home; four daughters, Brenda Roark, Gail Reece and Gloria Murray, all of Sparta and Jane Massey of Roanoke Rapids; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Sue Petree and husband Hobb of Tobaccoville; and a brother, Dwight Reeves and wife Margaret of Gastonia. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King. Burial will follow in the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at the funeral home.

ROTHROCK

Mr. Koyt Norman Rothrock of Lyons Street died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001. He was born Jan. 13, 1912, in Forsyth County to Oscar Harold and Bessie Clinard Rothrock. Mr. Rothrock was a lifelong member of Waughtown Baptist Church and was retired from United Automotive Service. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the building of the Blue Ridge Parkway. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Kate Yokley Rothrock of the home; a son, Ken Rothrock and wife Shelia of Winston-Salem; two daughters, Cherry Coney and husband Deke of Greensboro and Kay Savage and husband Jim of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Kevin Rothrock and wife Emily of Boone, Leann Spencer and husband Jeff of High Point, Teri Sananikone and husband Ting of San Diego, Calif. and Gini Barney and husband Wayne of Miami, Fla.; four great-grandchildren, Julia Sanaikone and Jody Sananikone of San Diego, Justin Barney of Miami and Ethan Rothrock of Boone; a sister, Rachel Culler and husband the Rev. Rufus Culler of Winston-Salem; and a special family member, Helen Chapel of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Joe McWethy. The family requests that their friends and relatives join them in a fellowship meal following the graveside service which will be held in the fellowship hall of Waughtown Baptist Church in honor of Mr. Rothrock. They would also like to extend a special thanks to his primary caregiver of three years, Toni Horton, and his additional caregiver, Kathy Peay. TUCKER

KING - Mrs. Opal Hemrick Cooke Tucker, 92, formerly of Winston-Salem passed away Sunday Oct. 7, 2001 at Village Care of King following a period of declining health. She was born Sept. 22, 1909, the oldest of 11 children, in Forsyth County to John Henry and Ada Long Hemrick. Mrs. Tucker was preceded in death by her first husband, Ronald H. Cooke in 1944 and her second husband, Ernest Eugene Tucker in 1971; also four brothers Grady, John Henry, Jr., Thomas and Charles "Barney" Hemrick. She was a member of Beck's Baptist Church, the Martha James Sunday school class and had retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. in 1965 with 30 years service. She also attended the Senior Citizens Clubs of DMA at Salem Baptist Church, Jonestown Club, Senior Citizens at Ardmore Baptist Church and Club "66" as long as health permitted. Surviving are a daughter,Mrs. Virginia "Susie" Cartrette and husband Horace of Winston-Salem; a son, Ronald "Ron" H. Cooke and wife Jeannie of Mooresville; three grandchildren Marla (Randy) Blevins of Rural Hall, Robin (John) Zarrella of Davie, Fla., and Craig Cooke of Belmont; eight great-grandchildren, Chad and Cameron Blevins, Andrew, Michael, Angelina and Anastasia Zarrella, Craig "C.J." Jr. and Katie Cooke; five sisters, Frances Honaker of Winston-Salem, Sarah (Caldwell) Cheek, Lottie (Earl) Morgan, all of Sebastin, Fla., Lois (Hubert) Mustin of Belews Creek and Jean Hudson of Pittsboro; a brother, Guy Hemrick of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Beck's Baptist Church by Dr. Ray Hamilton and the Rev. Michael Andrews. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and at other times at the home of the daughter. Memorials may be made to Beck's Baptist Church cemetery Fund, 5505 Beck's Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The family would like to extend a "Special Thanks" to the friends and caregivers at Village Care of King.

TUTTLE

Jenny Lee Cranfill Tuttle, 65, passed away on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Tuttle was born Dec. 12, 1935, in Forsyth County to Charles Lee Cranfill and Ethel Boles Cranfill. Mrs. Tuttle was a past employee of Western Electric, and was a member of Red Bank Baptist Church. Mrs. Tuttle is survived by her son, Randall S. Tuttle and his wife Claire T. Tuttle; and two grandchildren, Scott Thompson Tuttle and Carson Elizabeth Tuttle, all of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are Mrs. Tuttle's brother, Olin C. Cranfill and his wife Diane B. Cranfill; and two nephews, Forrest C. Cranfill and Darren S. Cranfill, all also of Winston-Salem. A memorial graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9 at Red Bank Baptist Church cemetery with the Rev. Paul Dean and the Rev. Steve McCutchan officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101-1512.

WALLACE

Mrs. Gertrude Frances Vytlas Wallace, 78, of Winston-Salem died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 4, 1923, in Sherman County, Kan. Mrs. Wallace was a member of Winston-Salem Friends Meeting and was retired from Guilford Mills. She was preceded in death by her husband, Porter B. Wallace. Surviving are two sons, Charles Wallace and Mark Wallace, both of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, Fallon Wallace, Porter Wallace, Carli Wallace and Mark Wallace Jr. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Crestview Memorial Park with Pastor Judith Dancy officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

WHITE

YADKINVILLE - Josepha Hoots White went to be with the Lord on Oct. 7, 2001, at Willowbrook Nursing Home in Yadkinville. She was born Sept. 2, 1919, in Surry County to the late Harvey Cleman and Lovie Poindexter Hoots. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert Ford White, in 1993; and a son, George Cleman "G.C." White, in 1998. She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was a loving mother and granny and will be greatly missed by a daughter and son-in-law, Katie and Leo King of Pfafftown; a son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Glenda White of Concord; a daughter-in-law, Wanda White of Thurmond; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Pleasant View Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Pleasant View Baptist Church.

BENNETT

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Donald "Don" Gray Bennett, 61, of 6029 Cain Forest Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 14, 1940, in Forsyth County to the late Grover Lacey and Mattie Thacker Bennett. He attended Gray High School and was a machine operator at RJ Reynolds Tobacco Co. Mr. Bennett was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Clemmons where he served as deacon and taught a Sunday school class as long as health permitted. On June 7, 1958 he married Frances Linville. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, William "Bill" Linville. Surviving are his wife of the home; three daughters, Donna Huie and husband Billy of Walkertown, Sandra Barker and husband Keith of Winston-Salem, and Rhonda Perdue and husband Tracy of Kernersville; his mother-in-law, Marie T. Linville of Kernersville; seven grandchildren, James Warner and wife Angie, Amy Stroud and husband Steve, Christy Richards and husband Jason, Cheyenne and Falon Barker, and Tina and Tiffany Perdue; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Walter R. Bennett and wife Betty of Advance, and James F. Bennett and wife Penny of Jacksonville, Fla. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Pastor Tim Duncan. Burial will be in Victory Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

CARPENTER

STATESVILLE - Ms. Betty Thompson Carpenter died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born in Iredell County April 30, 1933, to Walter Cowles and Lorease Johnson Thompson. Ms. Carpenter was a member of Northview Church of Christ in Statesville. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, James Frederick Thompson. She is survived by a daughter, Karen S. Tovia and husband Ephriam of Middletown, Md.; four grandchildren, Alex, Lucy, Max and Olivia of the home; a sister, Mary Frances Little; a niece, Mary Lisa Little of Winston-Salem; an "adopted" daughter, Cindy Hatchell and husband Marc of Statesville; a special friend and neighbor, Margaret Foster of Statesville; and the loving church members of Northview. She loved her family, her church and her kitten "Tessie". Betty had a long, enduring illness, which she gallantly fought. A memorial service will be held at Northview Church of Christ at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Northview Church of Christ, 1210 Museum Road, Statesville, NC 28625. Hayworth-Miller Funeral home is assisting the family.

DALTON

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Thelma H. Dalton, 88, died Oct. 8, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pine Hall Baptist Church in Pine Hall. Burial will be in Rock Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Belews Creek. She was a native of Forsyth County and attended the Church of the Living God in Stokesdale. She is survived by three sons, James Herman Martin (Rebecca), Reginald Martin Jr. and Vaul Martin (Carlotta), all of Walnut Cove; four daughters, Shirley Mitchell (Howard), Mary Jane Mitchell and Helen Price (Theodore), all of Walnut Cove, and Thelma Teresa Richardson (Charles) of Greensboro; step-children Mary Jane Hairston of Pine Hall and Walter Dalton of Hampton, Va.; a brother, Melvin Hairston of Philadelphia, Pa.; and 31 grandchildren. Family visita-tion will be held from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. Arrangements by Perry-Spencer Funeral Home, Madison.

DEAL

MATTHEWS - Mrs. Lucy Holbrook Deal, 81, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Plantation Estates of Matthews. A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, with the Rev. John Butler officiating. Interment was held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hillcrest cemetery in Valdese, with the Rev. Timothy Holt officiating. Mrs. Deal was born in Abshers, Wilkes County, July 20, 1920, the daughter of the late D.L. and Carrie Kennedy Holbrook. She was married in 1940 to John A. Deal Jr. Lucy spent part of her life living in Valdese and Winston-Salem, where she worked as a beautician and owned her own business while in Valdese. She entered Plantation Estates of Matthews in the mid-1980s. Lucy had lived for many years prior to moving into Plantation Estates with the illness Lupus. She was an active member of the Lupus Society, First Baptist Church, Matthews and many different book and craft clubs. Some of the things that she enjoyed include gardening, bible studies, reading, growing flowers and cooking. Lucy loved to be around people and she never met a stranger. Mrs. Deal is survived by a son, David A. Deal of Wilmington; grandchildren Suzanne Miller of Charlotte and David A. Deal Jr. of Washington, D.C.; sisters Ava Cleary of Winston-Salem, and Annie Barker of Elkin; and her long time friend, Ira Lee Shuford of Valdese. She was preceded in death by her husband; and her sister, Vena Barker. Memorials may be made to Lupus Foundation of America Inc., Charlotte Chapter, 1235 E. Boulevard, Suite 226, Charlotte, NC 28203. Arrangements by McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Mint Hill Chapel.

DYSON

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Kathleen Howard Dyson, 89, of Greenhill Road died early Wednesday morning at Autumn Care of Mocksville. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Eaton Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Steve Hedgecock officiating. Burial will be in Rose cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 Thursday night. Mrs. Dyson was born in Davie County Jan. 26, 1912, to the late William Henry and Annis Angell Howard and was a homemaker. She was a member of Eatons Baptist Church and especially enjoyed refinishing antiques and working in her garden and flower garden. She was preceded in death by a sister, Evelyn Andrews; and two brothers, Greenberry Howard and Benny Howard. Survivors include her husband, Alvin Henry Dyson of the home, whom she married Nov. 25, 1933; two sons, Benny Dyson and Darrell Dyson, both of Harmony; a grandson, Stephen Dyson of Harmony; three sisters, Henrietta H. O'Shea of Washington, D.C., Minnie Lee Barnhardt of Mocksville and Priscilla Howard of Elkin; and a brother, Waymoth Howard of Jonesville.

EVANS

STATE ROAD - Mrs. Ada Roberts Evans, 83, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Elkin Healthcare Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church by the Rev. John Attaway. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 p.m. to lie in state. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Evans was born April 10, 1918, to Jim Roberts and Maude Childress Roberts. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie R. Evans, in 1996; and a grandson, Jay Robert Evans, in 1990. Surviving are a daughter, Sally (Sid) Hayes of State Road; a son, Charlie "Shorty" and Judy Evans of State Road; a grandson, Sammy (Sherry) Evans of State Road; a granddaughter, Tammy Simmons of Hamptonville; a great-granddaughter, Nickie Evans; two great-grandsons, Jason and Rhyne Simmons; and four sisters, Sally Hall and Ella Maloy of Thomasville, Viola Nichols of Trinity and Edna Warren of Sophia. Grandview's Tri-County Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the family.
