FENTRISS

GULF BREEZE, Fla. - Mrs. Paralee Reid Fentriss, 93, the widow of Lt. Col. Ray H. Fentriss, passed away Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Gulf Breeze Hospital in Gulf Breeze, Fla. She was born Nov. 9, 1907, in Pilot Mountain to William Henry and Margaret Apperson Reid. Mrs. Fentriss was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain and very active in United Methodist Women and Service Aides. She is survived by a son and daughter in law, Ray and Jane Fentriss of Navarre, Fla.; two granddaughters and husbands, Anna Cam Fentriss and Craig Knox of Tallahassee, Fla., and Trina Fentriss and Kevin Rhodes of Ann Arbor, Mich.; two grandsons, Stephen and David Rhodes of Ann Arbor, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Fentriss was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister, George, Paul, Richard and Glenn Reid and Miss Katherine Reid of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain one hour prior to the service. Funeral Services are planned for Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at 1 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Pilot Mountain with the Rev. David Wyant officiating. Burial will follow in the Pilot Mountain City cemetery. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 696, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The Fentriss family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

FLINCHUM

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Luvenia Goins Flinchum, 84, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 10, 2001, at her home. She was born in Stokes County to the late Millard and Betty Tilley Goins. She was employed as a machine operator for 15 years at Burlington Industries. Mrs. Flinchum was a Jehovah's Witness. Preceding her in death were her husband, William Carlos Flinchum; and her daughter, Joyce Paige. She is survived by four children, W.C. Flinchum (Kathy), Mrs. Byron (Rose) Smith, Geraldine F. Inman (Don) and Ann F. Hepler (Frank), all of Walnut Cove; a brother, Clyde Goins; two sisters, Edith Pierce and Marie Hagan; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A 2 p.m. graveside service will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Danbury cemetery with John Held officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. GORDON

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Barbara Jean Redman Gordon, 66, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born Aug. 10, 1935, in Surry County to Howard Franklin and Rilla Hiatt Redman. Mrs. Gordon was an administrative assistant to Dr. M. Robert Cooper, Dept. of Hematology/Oncology at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mount Airy. She is survived by a son, Michael Lee Gordon of Clemmons; two grandsons, Matthew Gordon and Ryan Gordon; her mother, Rilla Redman of Mount Airy; a sister and brother-in-law, Joyce and Jerry Simmons of Pilot Mountain; and a brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Sandra Redman of Mooresville. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Mount Airy conducted by Dr. Roger Gilbert. Interment to follow at Simmons Grove Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at First Baptist Church before the service and at other times at the home of Joyce and Jerry Simmons. Memorials may be made in floral tribute or to the Leukemia Research Fund, Section of Hematology/Oncology, Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157; or to First Baptist Church Building Fund, 714 N. Mrs. Jessie Mae Alston Hairston, 76, of 101 Median Court, Winston-Salem, formerly of 1722 Whites Mill Road, High Point passed away Oct. 7, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A list of survivors and other details will be announced later. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

JARRETT

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Dorothy Ellis Jarrett, 76, of 1419 Trinity Ave. died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Wesley Long Hospital in Greensboro. Mrs. Jarrett was born March 5, 1925, in Surry County, the daughter of Grover Cleveland Ellis and Sarah Mittie Hayes Ellis. She was retired from Adams Millis Hosiery Mill and was a member of Green Street Baptist Church. She volunteered one hundred percent of her time to her family. On Oct. 20, 1956, she married James Paul Jarrett, and he survives of the home. Surviving in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Bray and husband Buddy of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Leona Sechrest of Pilot Mountain; two grandchildren, Melissa Deeney and Antony Ciccone; four great-grandchildren, Madison Deeney, Taylor Deeney, Nikolas Ciccone and Rian Chenot. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Green Street Baptist Church, by the Rev. Alan Cox. Burial will be in Floral Garden Park cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 Friday night at Sechrest Funeral Home on East Lexington Ave. The family requests that memorials be directed to Green Street Baptist Church Building Fund, 303 Rotary Drive, High Point, NC 27262.

JENKINS

The Rev. Bennie Jenkins, 62, of 1417 E. 23rd St. passed away Oct. 8, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He is survived by a daughter, Dianne Jenkins of the home; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Oct. 13, 2001, at St. Peters AME Church in Walterburg, S.C. with the Rev. Eugene Crying officiating. Burial will follow in John Brown cemetery. LUCKEY

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Evelyn C. Bitting Luckey passed away Monday Oct. 1, 2001, at Howard University Hospital. She was a native of Winston-Salem, a graduate of Atkins High School in 1951 and retired from the public school system in the District of Columbia. She was predeceased by her parents, Charlie and Francis Bitting; her husband, Willie J. Luckey Sr.; her son, Willie J. Luckey Jr.; and two daughters, Carolyn D. Hunter and Debra D. Bryant. She is survived by four loving children, Beverly J. Cooke, of Winston-Salem, and Michael W. Luckey, Sheila M. Black and Joseyln M. Luckey, all of Washington, D.C.; a son-in-law, William Bryant, of Raleigh; a brother, Bernard Bitting, of Columbus, Ohio; five sisters, Dora Williams, of Williamsburg, N.J., Gwendolyn Surrell, of Raleigh, and Shirley Robinson, Diane Bitting and Carol Young, all of Winston-Salem; four brothers-in-law, including Golden Luckey, of Winston-Salem; four sisters-in-law, including Mary Ellen Luckey, of Winston-Salem; 13 grandchildren, including DaShawn I. Luckey and Keeli M. Cooke, both of Winston-Salem; four great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services for Mrs. Evelyn Luckey were held Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, in Washington, D.C.

MILLER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Donald Keith Miller, 46, of Fairfield Road died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born Nov. 16, 1954, to the late Doyle Julius Miller and the late Patsi Gail Lyerly. He was a sheet-metal mechanic and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James D. Miller. Surviving are his wife, Scottie Rhinehart Miller; a son, Brian Miller; a sister, Shelia Miller of Mocksville; and a half sister, Patsy L. Simmon of Raleigh. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, with the Rev. Dwight Durham officiating. Burial will be in the Dutchman Creek Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service. Davie Funeral Service, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville, is serving the family.

MURDOCK

WILKESBORO - Mrs. Anja Gail Sexton Murdock, 51, wife of Wayne Murdock of Redbud Court died Tuesday morning, Oct. 9, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Murdock was born March 11, 1950, in Ashe County to Jay and Anna Adams Sexton. She was a member of Wilkesboro United Methodist Church and a graduate of Appalachian State University with a master's degree in reading education. Mrs. Murdock was a former teacher at Union Elementary School, the former manager of the North Wilkesboro License Plate Agency and co-owner of Hadley's Restaurant. Surviving in addition to her husband of the home are a daughter, Gayla Clothier of North Wilkesboro; her mother of Sparta; a brother, Larry Sexton of Asheville; and a grandson, Cory Clothier Murdock of North Wilkesboro. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, at Wilkesboro United Methodist Church with the Rev. Chris Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends in the Heritage Room at the church immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Wilkes, 1907 W. MYERS

EAST BEND - Mrs. Mary Lou Spillman Myers, 83, of 5225 Speas Ferry Road died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at her home. She was born in Yadkin County on Nov. 26, 1917, to Oliver W. and Molly Benbow Spillman. Mrs. Myers was a member of Stony Knoll United Methodist Church. She was a notary and tax preparer. Mrs. Myers was a loving mother, grandmother and good friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Myers; and four sisters, Annie Laura Spillman, Doris Spillman, Mattie Bean, and Geneva Robbins. Surviving are three sons, John Franklin and wife Dianne Myers of Boonville, Gary Allen and wife Tammy Myers, and Lynn and wife Cindy Myers, both of East Bend; a daughter, Margaret and husband Johnny Love of East Bend; three sisters, Hazel Lineberry and Frances Tucker, both of East Bend, and Etta Lineberry of Boonville; three brothers, William Spillman and Johnny Spillman, both of East Bend, and Wiley Spillman of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Tracy and wife Lorna Myers, Kelly Myers, Robbie Love and Gary Myers Jr.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 12, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Janet Anderson and the Rev. Nancy Johnson. The body will lie in state from 10:30 to 11 a.m. at the chapel. Burial will follow in Stony Knoll United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Thursday evening at the funeral home.

NEWSOM

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Mr. Robert Arthur "Bobby" Newsom, 59, of 2061 Welborn St., a native of King, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, in Rock Hill after a 41/2-month battle with cancer. Born May 8, 1942, in King to Richard C. and Geneva Shore Newsom, Bob was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church, where he was active in the choir, administrative board, finance committee and as a Sunday-school teacher. He was a former member of York County's board of disabilities and special needs. A graduate of Wake Forest University with an MBA from the University of South Carolina, his business career included positions of business manager at Wake Forest and treasurer at Salem Academy and College and Emory & Henry College, Emory, Va. He was currently practice manager of Rock Hill Radiology Associates. Surviving are his wife, Ida Dawson Newsom of the home; a son, Rich Newsom of Rock Hill; a daughter, Leigh N. (Marshall) Clarke of Charlotte; two brothers, Randall (Jean) Newsom of King and Dick (Judy) Newsom of Winston-Salem; and three sisters, Dot (Len) Dvoracek of Burlington, Jane (Wayne) Tuttle and Pat (Fred) Kapp of King. Memorial services were held in Rock Hill and at Emory & Henry College, with burial in Emory, Virginia. Memor-ials may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 149, Rock Hill, SC 29731.

PRATT

CARY - Susan P. Pratt died Oct. 8, 2001, at the Glenaire Healthcare Center in Cary. She was born to parents Susan Andersen and Virgil Poston in July 1919 in Madison, Wis. She received her bachelor of arts degree in economics (Mortar Board, Phi Beta Kappa) in 1940 from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where she also attended one year of graduate school in pre-law. She worked for the federal government in personnel management evaluation before joining the American Red Cross as a social worker in 1944. She worked for the Red Cross in an Army hospital in Normandy, France, during 1945. Upon returning from France after World War II, she met and married Rollin E. Pratt in 1946. They were married for 52 years, until Mr. Pratt's death in 1999. The couple made their home in Winston-Salem and Mrs. Pratt worked as an office manager in their business, R.E. Pratt and Company, Insur-ance Adjusters. Mrs. Pratt was a Girl Scout leader and was active first at First Presbyterian Church, Winston-Salem, and later at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in Rural Hall, where she served as a Sunday-school teacher, deacon, elder and member of the Witness and Service Committee. With Mr. Pratt, she was a founding member of Pine Brook Country Club, where she supported many activities, and assisted for a time in the junior girls golf program. Her primary service to the larger community was as a lead volunteer and member of the board of directors of the Crisis Control Ministry. Mrs. Pratt is survived by her sister, Anne Baxter, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; and two daughters, Penelope Pratt Oland (Bruce), of Raleigh and Deborah Pratt Tacon (Gary), of Piermont, N.Y. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Christopher Todd Gardner, of Holly Springs, Susan Colette Gardner, of Randleman, Gene Luka Tacon, Travis Rollin Tacon and Maya Rose Tacon of Piermont, N.Y.; and several stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to express their gratitude to the Glenaire staff members for the care they gave during her final illness. Susan wished that donations be made in her name to either Crisis Control Ministry, 200 E. 10th St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, 357 Old Hollow Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Oct. 21, at St. Andrews.

SMITH

DANBURY - Mrs. Lydia Elizabeth "Lib" Martin Smith, 92, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 10, 2001, at Stokes Reynolds Hospital. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late James Franklin "Frank" Martin and Lydia Ethel Leese Martin. She had been a resident of Danbury for 78 years, served as a town clerk for several years and was a member of Danbury Community Church. Lib was the Northwest regional librarian in Stokes County for more than 30 years. She will be best remembered for her trips around the county in the bookmobile, giving children opportunities to travel through books. Preceding her in death was her brother, Paul Henderson Martin. Surviving are a sister, Lois Martin Burgett Seibt of Spanish Fort, Ala.; a brother, Francis P. Martin of Danbury; three nieces, Sarah Martin Tuttle (Gary) of Cromwell, Ind.; Mary Ellen Martin of Danbury, and Elizabeth Burgett Hutson (Kenneth) of Mobile, Ala.; two great-nieces; great-four nephews; and many other relatives. A 3 p.m. funeral service will be held Friday, Oct. 12, 2001 at Danbury Com-munity Church, with interment following in Danbury cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 this evening at Burroughs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Danbury Beautifi-cation Fund, c/o Danbury Town Office, Courthouse Square, Dan-bury, NC 27016.

SNOW

Mr. Donald Walker Snow of 1406 Cannon Ave. passed away Mon-day at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. He was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem and an employee of Vernon Produce Co. He was a graduate of Paisley High School. Mr. Snow attended Saints Home United Methodist Church, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. John F. Epps officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. until the hour of services Thursday at the church. The remains may be viewed at Hooper Funeral Home. Survivors include his daughter, Denera Hairston of Winston-Salem; his mother, Christivia Snow of the home; a grandchild; a devoted cousin, Mary Davis of Winston-Salem; an aunt, Minnie (Haywood) Walker of Rochester, N.Y.; and other relatives and friends. TESH

LEXINGTON - Mr. Howard Eugene Tesh, 80, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born March 20, 1921, in Forsyth County to Jacob Henry and Lillie Catherine Fishel Tesh. Mr. Tesh was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 321/2 years service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II, and was of the Moravian faith. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and a sister. Surviving are his wife, Cassie Welch Tesh of the home; three children, Richard Allen Tesh and wife Lena of Lexington, Evelyn T. Boles and husband Larry of Mocksville, and Joe Edward Tesh and wife Rocki of Winston-Salem; and a granddaughter, Teia Lei Tesh of Greenville, N.C. Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Parklawn Mausoleum Chapel with Chaplain Fred Moretz officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is in charge of arrangements).

HARRIS

Juanita Hester Harris, 88, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born March 22, 1913, to Rosa Seivers and Elijah Cornelius Hester in Forsyth County and was the youngest of 10 children. She was married to the late Gwyn Harris in 1929. She was an active member of Fairview Moravian Church, Ardmore Moravian Church and Home Moravian Church as long as her health allowed. Surviving are a daughter, Diane H. Wright and husband Larry; a son, Arlen G. Harris and wife Lois of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren, Follin A. Key and husband Ron of Providence, R.I., Captain R. Gwyn Armfield and wife Catherine of Fayetteville, Renee' H. Patterson and husband Richard and Christopher G. Harris and wife Kim of Winston-Salem; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel by the Rev. Scott Venable. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. Memorials may be made to Home Moravian Church, Box J, Salem Station, Winston-Salem, NC 27108; or to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 1205, Winston-Salem, NC 27102-1205.

HUTCHINS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Lela Marie Badgett Hutchins, 83, of 117 Old Creed Road, the wife of Mr. Floyd Jackson Hutchins, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County, Mount Airy. Mrs. Hutchins was born Nov. 18, 1917, in Surry County, a daughter of the late Charles Lee and Susan Key Badgett. Mrs. Hutchins was a homemaker and member of the White Plains Friends Meeting. Surviving are her husband, Mr. Floyd Jackson Hutchins of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas Kent and Iris Hutchins of High Point; two grandchildren, Nicole Hutchins and Victoria Hutchins both of High Point; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Hazel and Ed Jessup of Mount Airy and Mecie and Roy McHone of Tarboro. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hutchins was preceded in death by three sisters, Lottie Johnson, Elsie Harbour and Bertha Shelton; and five brothers, Chester Badgett, Herman Badgett, Elbert Badgett, Roger Badgett and Oscar Badgett. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel in Mount Airy, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Johnson and the Rev. J. Loyd Pugh with burial to follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday night at Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the White Plains Friends Meeting cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 3, White Plains, NC 27031.
