GREENSBORO - Mrs. Faye Swain Leamon, 70, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23 at Palestine United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Jenkins and the Rev. David McCauley officiating. Faye is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Mr. Bill Leamon; two sons, Mike Leamon and his wife Carol of Bermuda Run, and Steve Leamon of Greensboro; a sister, Hallie Brown of Jacksonville, Fla.; three grandchildren, Stephanie Leamon of Marietta, Ga., Allison Leamon of Greensboro, and Kacie Shaver of Boston, Mass.; and her loyal companion, Beka. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Greensboro and Palliative Care, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405. McKINNEY

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. Claude Franklin McKinney, 71, passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001. He was born to the late Willis S. and Anna Mills McKinney Nov. 17, 1929, in Surry County. He married Josephine Golding Dec. 24, 1953, in Pilot Mountain. Mr. McKinney honorably served his country during the Korean War. He was a member of Beck's Baptist Church for over 30 years, and had retired from AT&T with nearly 40 years of service. In addition to his parents, two brothers preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife Josephine G. McKinney of the home; a daughter, Pamela M. Weir and her husband Pete of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Scottie Lee Brown and his wife Anna-Marie of Pfafftown; a great-grandson, Daniel Scott Brown of Pfafftown; and a sister, Ola Mae Slate and her husband Junior of Pinnacle. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22 at Beck's Baptist Church. Mr. McKinney will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Dr. Ray Hamilton will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. MILLER

ARARAT, Va. - Mrs. Rosetta Rhodes Miler, 81, of 786 Doe Run Road, died Oct. 19. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Baptist Church in Claudville, Va. Arrangements are being handled by Howell Funeral Service of Mount Airy.

SARTIN

Mrs. Deborah Ely Darr Sartin, the president of the Robert P. Sartin Advertising Co. and a Winston-Salem native, died at her home Thursday, Oct. 18, 2001. Her husband, Robert Pinkney Sartin, also of this city, whom she married in 1947, survives her. She was born Nov. 16, 1926, and graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School and from Salem College. She was the daughter of the late Edward Austin and Ruth Ely Darr. Mrs. Sartin was a member of Centenary Methodist Church where she served on the Altar Guild, the Local Outreach Committee and was a program chairman of a church Circle for many years. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendents in North Carolina. Mrs. Sartin served as president of the Junior League of Winston-Salem for two terms, 1965 and 1966, and was also president of YWCA. She was a member of the Citizen's Planning Council and served on the Forsyth Hospital Authority. Mrs. Sartin was instrumental in starting and serving as president of the Nature Science Center (present-day SciWorks), the Information and Referral Center, the Voluntary Action Center and the Little Greens Garden Club. In addition, she was active on many other community boards, including the Children's Theater and Radio Council. Mrs. Sartin enjoyed duplicate bridge and had attained the status of life master. She was an accomplished sculptor of children, giving her art to family and friends. She was also a Cub Scout leader for each of her three sons. She is survived by three sons, Robert Pinkney Jr. and his two daughters, Maggie and Molly; Edward Lewis and his wife, Marie, and his two sons, Austin and Christopher, and her two daughters, Emory and Mier; Richard Darr and his wife, Ruth, and their two sons, William and Jim. Also surviving are two sisters, Molly Messner of Chambersburg, Pa., and Cicely Roth and husband, Bill, of Elkin; and a brother, Edward Austin Darr of West Melbourne, Fla. Also a nephew, William M. Hanes and wife, Lee; two nieces, Betty Hanes and Ann Calhoun; her sister-in-law, Eleanor Moore and husband Dan; and 25 other nieces and nephews. Her sister, Drusilla and her brother, David, preceded Mrs. Sartin in death. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Roland Barnhardt officiating. The family will receive friends immediately after the service. A private family burial will be held at Salem cemetery. WHITE

HIGH POINT - Mr. William Moffitt White, 96, a resident of Wesleyan Manor and formerly of Barker Ave., died Oct. 20, 2001, at Wesleyan Manor. Mr. White was born Feb. 21, 1905, in Davie County to John and Amanda Allen White. He had been a High Point resident most of his life and was retired from Burlington Industries. Mr. White was a member of Rankin Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. White was first married to the former Adelene Baity, who preceded him in death. He later married the former Gladys Hanby, who also preceded him in death. Surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Frances Cromer of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Garnett Shaw of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Mrs. Thomasine Hill of High Point; a nephew, Irvin White of Marshalltown, Iowa; and a special friend, Mary Jackson of Archdale. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Floral Garden Park cemetery by the Rev. G. Lee Pollock. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

ASHBURN

KERNERSVILLE - Pastor Samuel Roscoe Ashburn Jr. of Piney Grove Road died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Oct. 22, 1928, in Surry County to the late Samuel Roscoe Ashburn Sr. and Sudie Cline Ashburn. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and worked in Kernersville as a mail carrier. He served in the U.S. Navy on mine duty in the Mediterranean Sea at the close of World War II. Pastor Ashburn was a minister in the Baptist church for more than 45 years. He most recently served Wayside Baptist Church in Walnut Cove, but served other churches including Vance Street Baptist Church in Reidsville and Lighthouse Baptist Church in Walkertown. He was preceded in death by a son, Darrell Van Ashburn; and brothers and sisters Howard Taft Ashburn, Conrad Clinton Ashburn, Eugene Leonard Ashburn, Herbert Gray Ashburn, Ruby Etta Ashburn Key Elder and Pauline Ashburn Watson Burns. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Riley Ashburn, of the home; a son, Michael Riley Ashburn, of Kernersville; a daughter, Laura Ann Ashburn, of Walkertown; two grandsons, Steven Darrell Ashburn and Trevor Boone Moss; a daughter-in-law, Karen Ashburn James, of Walnut Cove; two brothers, Samuel Odell and wife, Bonnie Sue Ashburn, of Rural Hall and Kenneth and wife, Winnifred Ashburn, of Winston-Salem; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Wayside Baptist Church (Circle Drive off Stokesburg Road in Walnut Cove). Brother Roger Williams will officiate. Pastor Ashburn will be taken to the church at 12 noon Tuesday to lie in state until service time Wednesday. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wayside Baptist Church Needy Family Fund, Walnut Cove, NC 27052. Burroughs Funeral Home in Walnut Cove is serving the Ashburn family.

BOST

Mrs. Annie Oakes Bost, 91 of Winston-Salem died Oct. 14, 2001. She was born Aug. 26, 1910, in Greene County to Albert and Laura McCoy Oakes. Mrs. Bost was a charter member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a graduate of Draughon's Business College. She was employed by Everette Stutt's Interiors and Holcomb & Carpenter's Interiors before retirement. Preceding her in death was her husband, John Hilliard Bost. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Frances Wester and husband Jim of Winston-Salem and Hilda Bost Swing and husband Don of Denver; four grandchildren, Kathy W. Siculan, Donnie Swing Jr., Johnny Swing and Liddy Swing; five great-grandchildren, Ryan S. Claghorn, Todd Siculan, Donnie Swing III, Lauren Roberts and Natalie Roberts; and a great-great-grandson, Killian Claghorn. A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at the home of Mrs. Bost by the Rev. Jack B. Yarbrough. Memorials may be made to Centenary United Methodist Church, 646 W. Fifth St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or Forsyth Rescue Squad, 1499 Old Salisbury Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127.

BROWN

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Barbara Ann Livengood Brown, 65, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Nov. 3, 1935, to Thomas M. Livengood and Ina Hepler Livengood. Mrs. Brown was a retired secretary for AT&T and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her parents. Surviving are her husband, Thomas C. Brown; a daughter, Susan Leigh Brown, of Roanoke, Va.; a sister, Pattie (William) Shelton, of Yadkinville; and three brothers, Harold (Lee) Livengood, of Winston-Salem, Wayne (Martha) Livengood of Yadkinville and Lowell (Betty) Livengood of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Yadkin Memorial Gardens, Yadkinville, with the Rev. Cecil Wetherholt officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home. Mackie-Reavis Funeral Home of Yadkinville will be serving the family.

BURGHARDT

Mrs. Rosalyn Stiefel Burghardt, 77, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Sunday morning at Countryside Manor in Stokesdale following a lengthy illness. She was born in the Bronx, N.Y., Sept. 20, 1924, to George Stiefel and Rose Kurtz Stiefel. She and her late husband, Edward R. Burghardt, moved to Winston-Salem in 1996. Mrs. Burghardt had been a resident of Countryside Manor for almost four years. She was preceded in death by her husband in February of 2000. Surviving are her daughter, Susan B. O'Brien, and husband, George, of Winston-Salem; her son, Edward R. Burghardt Jr., and wife, Joy, of Marshfield, Mass.; four grandchildren; and a sister, Sally Denley, of Queens, N.Y. A graveside service will be held at the National cemetery in Salisbury at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, with Rev. J. Marion Rector officiating. The family will receive friends at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel from 7 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday.

CARTER

HIGH POINT - Mr. Teddy "Butch" Charles Carter, 52, of 630 Grand St. died Oct. 14, 2001, at his residence. He was born Jan. 17, 1949, in Mecklenburg County, a son of Theodore Roosevelt and Norma Loflin Carter. He was a U.S. Army veteran and had been employed for 27 years by Highland Yarn Mills and for the past six years had been employed by Brown's Painting Co. He was a member of Allendale Baptist Church. On Nov. 25, 1982, he was married to the former Tammy Kincaid, who survives of the residence. Also surviving are three daughters, Angie Haynes and husband, Gene, of High Point, and Monica Hamilton and Samantha Carter, both of the residence; two sons, Anthony "Tony" Carter and wife, Janie, of Cherryville and Michael Hamilton Jr. of the residence; four grandchildren, Amanda Carter, Kayla Haynes, Austin Hamilton and Katie Hamilton; and two sisters, Phyllis Mundy Williams, of High Point, and Patty Primak of Asheulot, N.H. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Allendale Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Metters and the Rev. David Younger. Interment will follow in the Lebanon United Methodist Church cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Allendale Baptist Church, 900 E. Springfield Road, High Point. Arrangements are being handled by Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale.

CRAWFORD

GREENSBORO - Elizabeth Edwards Crawford, 85, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001, at her residence. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. Mrs. Crawford was born April 1, 1916, in Forest City to the late Gudger and Cloe Edwards. She graduated from Mars Hill College and Rutherfordton School of Nursing. Mrs. Crawford retired from High Point Memorial Hospital in 1982. She was a loving mother and grandmother. Mrs. Crawford is survived by her daughter, Judy Mishoe (Forrest), of Summerfield; sons Steve Crawford and Mike Crawford (Donna), both of Greensboro, and Bill Crawford (Robin), of Jamestown; brother G.W. Edwards (Lina), of Winston-Salem; and grandchildren Jason Crawford (Christy), Derek Mishoe and Brandi Crawford. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry, Sedgefield Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405; the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407; or to a charity of one's choice.

GLASS

Mrs. Emma Rollins Glass, 88, of Winston-Salem, died Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born May 6, 1913, in Davie County to the late Boyd W. and Cora S. Deweese Rollins. Mrs. Glass worked a number of years at Forsyth Medical Center as a nursing assistant. She was a member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Eli Glass in 1990. Mrs. Glass was a loving mother, a devoted wife and a loving neighbor. She is survived by a daughter, Martha Miller of Wallburg; two sons, Edwin R. Glass of Yadkin County and Alvin P. Glass of the home; and two grandchildren, Heather Miller and Kenneth Brown. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. John D. Rights. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

HILTON

RURAL HALL - Mrs. Ruth Lakey Hilton, 85, of 6563 University Parkway died unexpectedly Sun-day, Oct. 14, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. Her husband, James Bruce Hilton, preceded her in death May 8, 1995. Mrs. Hilton was born July 9, 1916, in Davie County, the daughter of the late Fred Roberts Lakey and Carrie Virginia "Kate" Furches Lakey. She was a member of Jefferson Church of Christ in Rural Hall and had been active in the Lydia Circle and the Young At Heart seniors group. Mrs. Hilton was the co-owner and operator of Hilton's Grocery Store in Winston-Salem for a number of years and Hilton's Mobile Home Court in Rural Hall. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Martha Ann Aldridge and husband Clyde of Tobacco-ville, Mary Ruth Hooper and husband David of Banner Elk and Katie Jean Westmoreland and husband Jack of King; eight grandchildren; 18 great-grand-children; two sisters, Mary Louise Leagans of Mocksville and Mar-garet McBride and husband John-son of Farmington; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Hilton was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Mae Hilton May 15, 1942; a sister, Joy Lakey Steelman; and a brother, Isaac Buren Lakey. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Wed-nesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Jefferson Church of Christ in Rural Hall, with Jerry Simpkins, Steve Cook and Darrell Portwood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Hilton will be taken to the church at 4 p.m. Tues-day, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. in the church sanctuary. Memorials may be directed to Jefferson Church of Christ, 8200 Jefferson Church Road, Rural Hall, NC, 27045 Hayworth-Miller Chapel in Rural Hall is assisting the Hilton family with arrangements and services.

JONES

WALKERTOWN - Mrs. Christine "Baw" West Jones, 88, widow of Russell C. Jones, died Saturday, Oct. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Loves United Methodist Church by the Rev. Chip Webb. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Jones was born in Forsyth County Dec. 30, 1912, the daughter of Willis Zeb and Mollie Vanhoy West. She was a member of Loves United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School to the 12-year-olds. She graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1930 and worked for Haverty Furniture Co. before retiring from International Minerals and Chemical Co. Survivors include a daughter, Joy Jones Zenker, and husband, Franz R., of Arcadia; two grandchildren, Molly Christine Altman, and husband, Clark, of Fayetteville, and Amy Leah Priddy of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, William Conner Altman and Christian Cole Altman, both of Fayetteville; a sister, Virginia "BA" West Poe, and husband, Peyton, of Winston-Salem; a brother, David A. "Bud" West, and wife, Evelyn, of Winston-Salem; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel is serving the family.

RUFTY

BOONE - Mrs. Annie Lewis Dougherty Rufty, 98, of Tanglewood Drive, died Sunday evening, Oct. 14, 2001. Born May 17, 1903, in Boone, she was a daughter of Dauphin Disco and Lillie Shull Dougherty. Mrs. Rufty was a member of the First Baptist Church of Boone and played an active role in various community affairs and clubs. She attended Appalachian Training School and received her BS degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn. She later did graduate work at Columbian University in New York City and Peabody College in Nashville, Tenn. Mrs. Rufty taught home economics at Cove Creek High School in Watauga County, Scotts High School in Scotts, and George Hildebrand High School in Connelly Springs. From 1945 until 1957 she and her husband Roy owned and operated the Hillside Dairy in Boone. Mrs. Rufty is survived by six nieces, Mrs. Virginia Brown of Greenville, Mrs. Lillie Perry of Greensboro, Mrs. Elizabeth Scoggins of Boone, Mrs. Ellen Surratt of Charlotte, Mrs. Rebekah Fanelty and Mrs. Jane D. Wilson, both of Rock Hill, S.C.; four nephews, Mr. John Brown of Roanoke, Va., Mr. Edwin M. Dougherty of Boone, Mr. Bartlett B. Dougherty of Cary and Mr. David D. Dougherty of Blowing Rock; and two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Grace S. Dougherty and Mrs. Kathleen M. Dougherty, both of Boone. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Albert Rufty; two brothers, Edwin S. Dougherty, and David Barnard Dougherty; and a sister, Clara Dougherty Brown. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Dougherty Chapel of First Baptist Church in Boone. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the First Baptist Church, 375 W. King St., Boone, NC 28607; or to a charity of the donor's choice. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

STEELE

ELKIN - Mrs. Martha Nance Steele, 92, of Elkin Health Care passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2001. Mrs. Steele was born May 28, 1909, in Surry County to Oswald and Rebecca White Nance. Mrs. Steele was a homemaker and a member of Poplar Springs Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thurmond Steele; and a sister, Mrs. Lorene Shepherd. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Edward Steele of Winston-Salem, Posey (Marie) Steele, of Elkin and Windell (Barbara) Steele, of Dobson; two daughters, Mrs. Juanita Dockery and Mrs. Josephine Dunn, both of Elkin; a sister, Mrs. Laura Snow, of Victoria, Ontario, Canada; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church by the Rev. Roger Hensley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Steele will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Tuesday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Poplar Springs Baptist Church cemetery.

BARNER

Annie Louise Barner, 78, of 2415 Greenway Ave., Winston-Salem, passed away Oct. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. There will be a memorial service from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at White Rock Baptist Church, 1233 E. 14th St., Winston-Salem. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at McConnell Funeral Home, 260 Cherry St., Bluefield, W.Va., with Pastor V. Cedric Crawford officiating. Entombment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum on Littlesburg Road. McConnell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
