BLEVINS

Mrs. Sadie Johnson Blevins, 83, of Winston-Salem, died Monday evening, Oct. 22, 2001, at Cambridge Assisted Living of Clemmons. She was born July 6, 1918, in Wilkes County and maintained a close relationship to the Templeton family in Wilkes County throughout her life. Mrs. Blevins graduated from Appalachian State Teachers College and retired from the Forsyth County Public Schools, after which she volunteered for more than 25,000 hours at N.C. Baptist Hospital. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Priscilla Blevins. Surviving are a daughter, Cathy Blevins Howe of Clemmons; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Phyllis Blevins of Clayton; a granddaughter, Catherine Howe of Chapel Hill; and a grandson, Adam Blevins of Clayton; two sisters, Mabel Johnson and Marie Tilley, both of Winston-Salem; and a brother Claude Cleary of Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday by Dr. David Hughes in the Davis Memorial Chapel of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, 300 S. Hawthorne Road. A grave-side service will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Mountain Park cemetery in Wilkesboro. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Piedmont N.C. Chapter, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Box 999, Charlotte, NC 28215-3220.

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Karol Kay Veach Cook, 61, of 19927 Ricewood Way, Katy, Texas, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Cook was born in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late John and Cora Jones Veach. She was a graduate of Kernersville High School and employed by Litton Loan Servicing LLC. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Cook. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon Kay Oakley of Camarillo, Calif.; two stepdaughters, Shaun Larue and Charlotte Dawn Cook, both of Milan, Tenn.; a son, Harold Gray Speaks Jr. of Houston, Texas; a stepson, William H. Cook II of Milan, Tenn.; a sister, Margie Hutchins of Kernersville; two brothers, Travis Veach of Sneads Ferry and John G. Veach Jr. of Kernersville; and eight grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Mike Swofford. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A graveside committal service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at the Fairview cemetery in Warrenton. FREEMAN

ELKIN - Mrs. Cassie Mae Holyfield Freeman, 87, of 1371 Twin Oaks Road passed away Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital following a short illness. She was born in Surry County June 14, 1914, to the late Lacy and Florence Cave Holyfield. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Freeman was preceded in death by her husband, Buck Freeman; and her brother, Floyd Holyfield. Cassie was a member of Welcome View Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Leroy Burton of Dobson and a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Gray and Louise Freeman of Elkin; three grandchildren, Lydia (Michael) Gambill, Lynn (Judy) Burton and Wendy (Michael) Norman; three great-grandchildren, Donnie Burton, Dusty Burton and Cody Norman; a great-great-grandchild, Star Burton; a sister and brother-in-law, Odessa (John) Shores of Thurmond; and two brothers, John Holyfield and Jim Holyfield, both of Dobson. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Welcome View Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Her body will remain at Davis & Son Funeral Home in Dobson until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

HAAS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Catherine Elaine Kohli Haas, 61, of 1725 Pittman St., the wife of Ernest Haas, Sr., passed away Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Haas was born Sept. 8, 1940, in Jersey City, N.J. to the late Fred and Mary Kelly Kohli. She retired from Griffin Temporary Services and attended the Holy Angels Catholic Church. Survivors include her husband, Ernest Haas Sr. of the home; two sons, Mickey Haas of Monroe Township, N.J. and Mark Haas of Port Murray, N.J.; two sisters, Teresa Sabo of Ludowici, Ga. and Margaret Heinrich of Fair Lawn, N.J.; and three brothers, Peter Kohli of Mine Hill, N.J., Joseph Kohli of Little Ferry, N.J. and Frederick Kohli of Lyndhurst, N.J. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Haas was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Carroll, Rita Kuklinski and Alice Scozzafava; and two brothers, Edward Kohli and Francis Kohli. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Ippolito-Stellato Funeral Home Chapel in Lyndhurst, N.J. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Gerald Scott. Burial will be in the Holy Cross cemetery in North Arlington, N.J. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Mrs. Collier Josephine Banks Jones, 84, of 5315 Hunt Park Court, passed away Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was born June 2, 1917, in Greensville County, Va., the daughter of Willie and Sarah Hawthorne Banks. She was preceded in passing by two daughters, Juanita and Zelda. She leaves to cherish her memory three sons, William Jones of Freeman, Va., Theodore Jones of Hackensack, N.J. and Herman Eugene Jones of Henderson; three daughters, Josephine Robinson of Freeman, Gladys Lewis of Emporia, Va. and Lavonia Judkins of Winston-Salem; 31 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a foster daughter, Donna Byrd Batts; a brother, Cephas Banks of Baltimore, Md.; sons-in-law; daughters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 12 noon Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Christopher Brinson officiating. Burial will be in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at the funeral home. (Russell)

JOYNER

RONDA - Mr. James Edgar Joyner, 70, of Clingman Road, Ronda died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Murphy and the Rev. Hammet Riner officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Joyner was born Aug. 9, 1931, in Wilkes County to Fisher R. and Mary Ann Childress Joyner. He retired from Container Corp. in Winston-Salem and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Clingman. Mr. Joyner served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife, Minnie Sue Prevette Joyner of the home; a daughter, Mrs. James (Patricia) Alexander of North Wilkesboro; two sons, Darryl and Eleisa Joyner and Scotty Joyner, all of Ronda; and four grandchildren, Justin Alexander and Sarah Alexander, both of North Wilkesboro, Shannon Joyner Hall of Thurmond and Andrea Joyner of Ronda. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home Wednesday night from 7 to 8:30. LOWERY

Mr. William Curtis Lowery Sr., a native of Winston-Salem, departed this life Saturday, Oct. 20, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Aug. 13, 1956, in the city of Winston-Salem. He was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. He served in the Job Corp and the U.S. Army for a short period. He joined St. Matthew Apostolic Church. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Bessie R. Lowery and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mozelle McCoy. William was affectionately called "Shaft" by his family and friends. William was kind, sweet and a friend to all. He knew no stranger. William will be missed by many who knew and loved him. He leaves to cherish his memory his parents, Pastor Shirley L. Johnson and Deacon George R. Johnson Sr.; two daughters, Ms. Latanya "Shell" Lowery and Brittany Sims, both of Winston-Salem; three sons, William C. Lowery Jr., Shawn Bonner and Antonio Bonner of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Mrs. Beverly Dickerson (Robert) and Mrs. Valerie McMillian (Clarence), both of Winston-Salem; six brothers, the Rev. Ronald Lowery (Sylvia) of Henderson, Mr. George Johnson (Aleta) of Capitol Heights, Md., Mr. Terry Johnson (Taleah) of Tobaccoville, Mr. Robert Lowery (Vonetta), Elder Edward Lowery (Delores) and Elder Gary Johnson, all of Winston-Salem; maternal grandfather, Mr. Robert Friend of Winston-Salem; paternal grandfather, Mr. George McCoy of Philadelphia, Pa.; two uncles, Bishop Joseph Lowery (Josephine) of Winston-Salem and Mr. Charlie Johnson (Beatrice) of Annapolis, Md.; three aunts, Mrs. Bertha Bynum of Winston-Salem, Ms. Barbara McCoy and Mary Ann Luckey (Gilbert) of Philadelphia; five grandchildren; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Family visitation and funeral services will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at St. Matthew Apostolic Church, New Walkertown Road. Bishop Joseph Lowery is pastor and officiating minister. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m., the funeral will be at 1 p.m. Family will assemble and leave from the home of the parent's, George and Shirley Johnson at 11:45 a.m. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. LYNCH

Mr. Robert Paul Lynch of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly Tuesday at Forsyth Medical Center. He was 81. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and is survived by two sons and their families. Robert and his wife, Vanessa, live in Apex and Barry and his wife, Marti, and their four children, Kyle, 12, Amy, 10, Kelly, 6, and Susie, 3, live in Pfafftown. Robert was a devoted father and husband as well as an enthusiastic member of the Southfork Model Railroad Club. Robert served as a non-commissioned officer in the Army-Air Force during World War II. He graduated from Marquette University with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for 35 years for IBM Corp. in various locations. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. Mass will be preceded by a Rosary at 10 a.m. at the church.

MOORE

Retired Sgt. First Class Melvin Vanderbilt Moore, 56, of 5 Five Royales Drive, departed this life Friday, Oct. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. A native of Daytona Beach, Fla., Melvin was born to the late Joseph Gaines and Hattie Mae Moore Jan. 5, 1945. Melvin was lovingly reared by his aunt, Margaret E. White and his late uncle, Cornelius White, and attended Campbell St. High School in Daytona Beach, Fla. He served dutifully 221/2 years in the U.S. Army while being stationed in Ft. Knox, Ky., Gelhausen, Germany, Ft. Riley, Kan., and St. Stewart, Ga. He served as Dining Facilities Sergeant First Class and received honors and awards for exceptional achievements for his outstanding performance in ranking. He was accommodated with several medals, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Service Ribbons, Overseas Service Bar and Expert Badges. Melvin came to Winston-Salem, his wife Cassandra's home after his military retirement in 1987. He served God wholeheartedly as a faithful member of the New World Cappadocia Outreach Church for six years and held office as chairman of the deacon board. Melvin is survived by Cassandra Reich Moore, a devoted wife of 25 years; two daughters, Diamond Alize' Moore and Star Breyanna Moore; an aunt, Margaret E. White; two great-aunts, Eloise Gilyard and Rebecca Gilyard of Daytona Beach, Fla.; a cousin, Charles White of Daytona Beach; a mother-in-law, Betty Collins; a father-in-law, James W. Reich Sr.; a grandfather, Leo B. Cannon Sr.; two uncles, Minister Leo Cannon Jr. (Barry), and Reginald Cannon; five sisters-in-law, Cynthia Love, Cheryl Reich, Sharon Reich of Winston-Salem, Janice Reich of Rural Hall, Clarissa Faye Teal of Walkertown; three brothers-in-law, James W. Reich Jr. of Winston-Salem, Terry Reich of Rural Hall and Chuck Teal Sr. of Walkertown; seven nieces, Crystal Love, Maquila Hill (Daneron), Cheron Wilson, April Reich, Ashli Hill, Terra Reich, and Erika Reich; four nephews, Kenneth Love Jr., Chuck Teal Jr., Desmond Teal, and James Reich III; and many great-nieces, great-nephews, other relatives and friends. Homegoing services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Melvin "Rip" Wilkins presiding. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at the Salisbury National cemetery with full military rites. The visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. (Russell)

MYERS

Mr. Roy William Myers Sr., 79, of Winston-Salem died unexpectedly Saturday morning, Oct. 20, 2001, at his home. A native of Forsyth County, he was born May 22, 1922, to the late Noah and Ethel Myers. Mr. Myers was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1940 to 1941, during this time he met, fell in love with and married Myrtle Katherine Kiger on Dec. 27, 1940. They were married 57 years until Mrs. Myers' death on Nov. 26, 1998. He was a World War II veteran, having served with the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge at the end of the war. Mr. Myers then moved to Baltimore, Md., and worked for Martin-Marietta Aircraft Corps for 17 years. Mr. Myers then started an electronics repair business for TVs and radios called "Belair Road Discount TV Co." in Baltimore Md., and retired in 1981. He then moved back to Forsyth County to be closer to his family. Surviving are a son, Roy William Myers Jr.; a grandson, Bradley William Myers; a granddaughter, Victoria Lynn Myers, all of the home; the son's finance, Suzan Elizabeth Garner of King; his brother, Virgil Myers of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Elsie Myers Orrell and Ruby Myers Koontz, both of Maggie Valley. Mr. Myers was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Myers of South Carolina; and a half brother, Harry White of Pfafftown. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Rural Hall Chapel, by the Rev. Charlie Myers. Burial with military Honors by the VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard will follow in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The Myers family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. ODOM

Deacon Mr. Jeff Craton Odom, 90, of 2801 N. Patterson Ave. passed Oct. 21, 2001. He was born Dec. 25, 1910, to Fred Odom and Sarah Odom in Pine Buff, Ark. He was employed by the city of Winston-Salem. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Odom was a member of Church of God in Christ Temple where he served on the deacon board. He leaves to cherish his memory a devoted wife, Mildred P. Odom; a son, Jeff Odom Jr.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Jerry C. & Frances S. Gilmore Memorial Chapel where Elder Bernard Walker will officiate. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the chapel. Arrangements entrusted to Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

PASCHAL

STONEVILLE - Mr. Jesse Clarence "J.C." Paschal Jr., 65, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Paschal was a 1956 graduate of Wentworth High School, attended Elon College and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from Stroh Brewery in Winston-Salem after 25 years of service. Mr. Paschal was the son of the late Elder Jesse Clarence Paschal Sr. and Gladys McCollum Paschal. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dale Quackenbush, and a brother, Clarence Elmo Paschal. Surviving are his wife, Frances Hatcher Paschal; a daughter, Teresa Latham and husband Greg of Roswell, Ga.; a son, James C. "Jay" Paschal of Eden; a grandson, Josh Arrington of Woodbury, Tenn.; sisters June Purcell and Carol Dillard of Reidsville; brothers Robert Dennis "Pete" and wife Anne of Reidsville, Eddie L. "Larry" of New London, John and wife Gracie of Eden, Dewey and wife Betty of Reidsville, J.P. and wife Virginia of Columbia, S.C., Dalton and wife Nel of Georgetown, S.C. and Charles of High Point; a sister-in-law, Betty of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Hurley Quacken-bush of Reidsville; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Overlook cemetery in Eden. Memorials may be made to the North Carolina chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 5950 Fairview Road, Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28210. Fair Funeral Home in Eden is serving the family.

PULLIAM

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Robert Lee Pulliam, 82, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Britthaven of Forsyth. He was born Aug. 13, 1919 in Moore County, a son of Grover P. and Agnes Holder Pulliam. Mr. Pulliam was a U.S. Army World War II veteran and retired from Kraft Foods Inc. Surviving are his wife, Sarah Nelson Pegram Pulliam; a son, Terrell B. Pulliam; two stepdaughters, Terry Pegram Carter and her husband, Steve, and Lorrie Pegram Cooper; a stepson, Douglas Nelson Pegram and his wife, Carol; a sister, Ruth Mabe; and three stepgranddaughters, Amanda Stancill, Jessica Pegram and Lacey Pegram. A Private graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Gardens of Memory, Walkertown, by the Rev. Claude H. Mabe. Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home is assisting the Pulliam family.

'SIMMONS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Irene W. Simmons, 78, of 718 Allred Mill Road died Oct. 23, 2001. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Howell Funeral Chapel in Mount Airy.

SLAYMAN

Mr. E.J. Slayman of 2945 Reynolda Road died at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical. He was 81. Slayman moved to Winston-Salem in February to be with family while receiving treatment at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University. Before retiring in 1992, he was a career reporter and editorial writer on daily newspapers in San Antonio, Texas. He also served as public-information director for the city of San Antonio. Prior to settling in San Antonio, Slayman worked for newspapers in Harlingen and Pampa, Texas, and Miami, Okla. Born in Douthit, Okla., on Sept. 15, 1920, to Walter Slayman and Gladys Webb Slayman, Slayman graduated from Miami High School and attended Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater. He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942 to 1946 as a journalist. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen Beth Twitty Slayman and three daughters and their families, Jan, Mike, Emma and Moria Lawlor of Winston-Salem, Judy, David, Price and Reed Onken of Oklahoma City and Jill, Ross and Rex Dausin of San Antonio. A funeral service was held October 16, at the Little Church of La Villita in San Antonio. Interment was at San Jose Burial Park on the historic Spanish Mission Trail. The family requests that donations be made to the Cancer Patient Support Program of Wake Forest University.

SWAIM

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Herbert H. Swaim Sr., 75, died Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2001. He was born April 27, 1926, in Forsyth County, the son of Hiram H. and Ethel (Dean) Swaim. Mr. Swaim served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, he retired from Western Electric in 1982 as a supervisor for 38 years. After his retirement he worked with Hampton Voss Realtors for several years. He was a member of Cherry Street United Methodist Church, a charter member of Kernersville Jaycee's, a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and was very active with the American Cancer Society. Mr. Swaim was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Doris Di'Allisio. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Wells Swaim of the home; a daughter, Jeanie Swaim Stanley and husband Don of Greenville, N.C.; sons Barry Reid Swaim and wife Lisa and Herbert H. Swaim Jr. and wife Nancy, all of Kernersville; a brother, Lawrence Dean Swaim of Walkertown; grandchildren Chris Stanley, Melissa Wallace, Will Stanley, Audrey Phillips, Reid Swaim, Jes Swaim, Whitney Swaim and Brad Swaim; great-grandchildren Ian Wallace and Elise Stanley; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Tom Smith of Kernersville; and his faithful dog, "Sanford." Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel, Kernersville. Burial will be at Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Pierce Chapel. Memorials may be made to Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
