WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Donna Ann "Janie" Duggins Throckmorton, 49, died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born in Forsyth County to P.D. Duggins and Patricia Vogt Duggins. She was employed by Guardian Care Nursing Center and the Pantry before her illness. Janie was an Atlanta Braves baseball fan. She was preceded in death by her father; and her aunt, Mabel D. Smith. Surviving are her husband of 31 years, Larry D. Throckmorton of the home; a son, Bradley Scott Throckmorton and wife April of Cana, Va.; a daughter, Tracy Denise Throckmorton of Walkertown; her mother, Patricia V. Duggins of York, S.C.; three brothers, Danny Hanes Duggins and wife Gail of Walnut Cove, Bobby Joe Duggins and wife Gale of Lynchburg, Va., and Roger Darrell Duggins and wife Patricia of Rock Hill, S.C.; two sisters, Cynthia Sue Duggins Ivy and Lisa Dawn Duggins, both of York; three grandchildren, Mikey "Budman" Brown, Logan Dawson and Janie Leighann Throckmorton; four aunts, Sue Pruitt, Peggy Duggins, Eleanor Mae Jefferys and Pattie McBride; an uncle, Johnny Vogt; two very special cousins, Rhonda Vaden and husband Tim and Kim Cartrette and husband Sam; stepmother Irene Duggins; a half brother, Edward Duggins; two stepbrothers, Roger and David Alley; and a special friend, Lillian Craig. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Roscoe Bowden officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. VOGLER

Miss Doris Mildred Vogler, 91, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Feb. 6, 1910, in Forsyth County to Leslie L. and Sarah Weavil Vogler. She was retired from Sara Lee. She was a member of Friedland Moravian Church where she was a member of the Women's Fellowship, a Sunday-school teacher and a diener, as well as serving on the Sacristan Committee. Miss Vogler is survived by two sisters, Hazel Vogler and Lois V. Walker, both of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Casper Vogler, James W. Vogler and wife Delilah, all of Winston-Salem, and Holland Vogler and wife Phoebe of Kernersville; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Friedland Moravian church by the Rev. Steve Craver, the Rev Norwood Green and the Rev. Jeff Vogler. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. Memorials may be made to Friedland Moravian Church Building Fund, 2750 Friedland Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107. The family would like to give a very special thanks to the staff of Springwood Care for its love and care for Doris.

WELBORN

WILKESBORO - Mr. Jack Culver Welborn, 74, of Berry Mountain Drive died Monday, Oct. 22, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Mount Zion Baptist Church in Ferguson with the Rev. Jerry Smith, the Rev. David Byrd and the Rev. Sherrill Wellborn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Welborn was born in Wilkes County, June 24, 1927, to Green Dixon and Nellie Mae Culver Welborn. He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. Mr. Welborn was a poultry grower and farmer most of his life. After retiring from farming, he began a used-car business, J & W Used Cars. Mr. Welborn was politically active all of his life. He was a past Wilkes County Commissioner and a past member of the Wilkes County Planning Board. Mr. Welborn served on the County and the 10th District Republican Committee. He was the past Republican Precinct Chairman of Elk #1. Mr. Welborn was farmer of the year recipient and a member of the NC Agricultural Finance Committee. Mr. Welborn is survived by his wife, Madeline Welborn of the home; two daughters, Derry Welborn Hendrix of Wilkesboro and Sharon Welborn of Advance; two grandchildren, Kendra Hendrix of Wilkesboro and Russ McManus of Advance. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 Tuesday night. ALLEN

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Paul E. Allen, 82, of Cornatzer Road passed away at his home Thurs-day, Oct. 25, 2001. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Eaton Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Joel Boyles and the Rev. James Stowe officiating. Burial will be in the Cornatzer United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 6:30 to 9 Saturday evening. The family requests that memorials be considered for Redland Pentecostal Church, 4302 U.S. 158 E., Advance, NC 27006; or Davie County Cancer Services, 622 N. Main St., Mocks-ville, NC 27028. Mr. Allen was born and raised in Davie County, the son of the late Joseph and Mary Winters Allen, and was retired from Reynolds Tobacco Co. He had also worked at a milk-bottling company in Charlotte and had been a carpenter. He was a member of the Redland Pentecostal Church, where he had served as a church usher. He was a well-known community Samaritan and prayer warrior. He was an honorary member of the Cornatzer/Dulin Volunteer Fire Department. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, where he was a mess sergeant. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marga Lennemann Allen; his second wife, Katherine Fine Allen; and a son, Larry Allen. Surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Karen Allen of Mocksville, Patrick and Michelle Allen of Mocksville, Jerome and Lori Allen of Mocksville, Jimmy and Robbie Walker of Westfield and Harold and Wanda Walker of Lexington. Daughters and sons-in-law include Viola and Gary Deal of Gibsonville, Linda and Barry Herion of Salisbury, Dianne and Gene Grubb, Brenda and Butch Knoll, Cindy and Greg Beddard and Shelia and Greg Stanley, all of Mocksville; five sisters, Edna McClary of Rockwell, Margaret Byerly of Lexington, Hazel Estes of Salisbury, Marie Shoaf of Statesville and Nellie Cooper of Winston-Salem; four brothers, James Allen of Gastonia, Hathan Allen of Mocksville, Daniel Allen of Asheville and Jerry Allen of Salisbury; 20 grandchildren, Michelle, Nicole, Trish, Stephen, Jason, Jeremy, Troy, Katlin, Tonya, Kerri, Angie, Ricky, Michael, Lee, Billie, Scottie, Jason, Mary Jane, Brent and Shane; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He also was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Honeycutt; and a brother, Roy G. Allen.

BROOKS

THURMOND - Mr. Harrison Lee Brooks, 75, of Union Community Road, passed away Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Brooks was born Aug. 26, 1926, in Yadkin County to Henry and Bertha Dinkins Brooks. Mr. Brooks was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He attended Union Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herman and Harold Brooks. Survivors include his wife Bonnie Lee Brooks of the home; three sons and daughters-in-law, Terry Lee (Rosa Lee) Brooks of Thurmond, Kevin Craig (Paula) Brooks of Traphill, and Eric Lynn (Drema) Brooks of Traphill; two brothers, Homer and Herbert Brooks, both of Hamptonville; two sisters, Beulah Johnson of Hamptonville, and Rosaleen Smith of Enon; and five grandchildren, Stuart, Addison, Jared, Caleb, and Erica. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday. Oct. 29 at Union Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Wood. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. CARLE

Mr. Christopher John Carle, 34, of Winston-Salem died Friday evening, Oct. 26, 2001. He was born Aug. 26, 1967, in Holyoke, Mass., to Carol Carle and Mark Carle. Mr. Carle served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Iowa from 1985 to 1989; was a former Winston-Salem police officer (five years); and for the past seven years worked as a sheriff's deputy for the Forsyth County Department of Animal Control. He was an active member of Bethany Baptist Church, where he found and learned to love Jesus. He is survived by his devoted wife, Felicia Ann Carle; two daughters, Victoria Alice (10) and Syndey Alexandra (4); his mother, Carol L. Carle of Loveland, Ohio; his father, Mark V. Carle (Sue) of Milford, Ohio; his brother, Douglas A. Carle (Amy) of Loveland, Ohio; his sister, Kelly K. Susi (Arthur) of Columbus, Ohio; his grandmother, Alice L. Stevenson; and his aunt, Patty Livengood (Ted), all of Loveland, Ohio; his mother-in-law, Maria Ferguson of Winston-Salem; his brothers-in-law, Charles (Karen) Ferguson of King, and Danny and Willard Ferguson, both of Winston-Salem; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, in the Family Life Center at Bethany Baptist Church. Visitation will follow the service. CAUDLE

REIDSVILLE - Agnes Bowden Caudle, 82, formerly of 1824 Ashley Loop Road, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Morehead Nursing Center. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Roselawn Memorial Gardens. A native of Stokes County, she was a daughter of the late John William and Nancy Elizabeth Stille, and had lived in Rockingham County most of her life. She was a former employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a member of Red Bank Baptist Church in Germanton. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Howard Caudle. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Caudle Hamlin and husband Wade of Richfield, and Martha Caudle King and husband Mark of Westfield; four grandchildren, Joanna King and Rachel King, both of Westfield, and Erin Hamlin and Stacey Hamlin, both of Richfield; her twin sister Edna Shouse of Danbury; and her brother, Chester Bowden of Germanton. CROTHERS

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - Carl Moore Crothers, 86, died Oct. 24, 2001. He was born Dec. 22, 1914, in Natchez, Miss., to Abner George and Sallie Moore Crothers. The family lived for many years in the Pulaski Heights area of Little Rock, and were longtime members of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church. Mr. Crothers attended Little Rock schools. During World War II, he worked as a civilian for U.S. Navy Operations, later Navy Intelligence, in Washington, D.C. After the war, he transferred to the Veterans Administration and worked in insurance with regional VA offices in several cities. He returned to Little Rock and retired in 1982 after completing 40 years in government service. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Abner G. Crothers and H.B. Crothers; and a grandson, Jess Martin Hughes. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Martin Crothers of Good Shepherd Retirement Center in Little Rock; two sons, Carl M. Crothers Jr. of Winston-Salem, and George Martin Crothers of Lexington, Ky.; two daughters, Carlene Leskar of Middletown, Calif., and Mitzi Hughes of Little Rock, Ark.; a sister, Mabel Tisdale of Stokesdale, N.C.; and six grandchildren. A gathering in remembrance of Mr. Crothers will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jeffrey Hampton officiating. LEXINGTON - Mary Beatrice "Bea" Jordan Hinkle, 85, of Sunbridge of Lexington Nursing Home and formerly of Charlie Hinkle Road in the Welcome community, died at 7:46 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at Sunbridge of Lexington Nursing Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she was a member. The Rev. Lee Pollock and Dr. James White will conduct the service. Burial will be at Bethesda United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. Hinkle was born in Davidson County July 25, 1916, to James Madison Jordan and Flora Mae Barnes Jordan. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband Grover Clayton Hinkle in 1965; and brothers, David Lee Jordan, Ottis William Jordan, and Sidney Conrad Jordan; and sisters, Bessie May Jordan and Dorothy May Jordan. Surviving are her sons, Gary Hinkle of Thomasville, Farrell Hinkle and wife Ruth Ann of Welcome, and Steve Hinkle and wife Paula of Thomasville; her daughter, Karen Hinkle of Welcome; six grandchildren, Tamara Holcomb and husband Mark, Nicole Hinkle, Ashley Dembowski and husband Alex, Chris Hinkle, Stacey Hinkle and Leslie Hinkle; great-grandchildren, Ty Holcomb and Alli Holcomb; her brother, Hubert Jordan of Columbus, Ga.; and half sisters, Gladys Jordan Johnson and Theola Jordan Essick, both of Lexington. HUDSON

Mr. Russell David Hudson, 87, of Winston-Salem died Oct. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, North Elm Chapel. The Rev. Mark Walters of Living Water Baptist Church in Greensboro and the Rev. Tim Gammons of Woodland Baptist Church of Winston-Salem will officiate. After the service, interment will be in Lakeview Memorial Park in Greensboro. Mr. Hudson retired from Greensboro Industrial Platers Co. as a chrome plater. He also worked at Greensboro Country Club in the maintenance department. Mr. Hudson attended Living Waters Baptist Church until he moved to Winston-Salem in June 2000 because of failing health. He was preceded in death by his wife, Beatrice Melvinia McCandless Hudson. He is survived by daughters Mamie Tharington and husband Harvey of Pfafftown, Phylis Butler Smith and husband Orion of Randleman, Pearl Humble and husband Charles of Greensboro, and Nancy Oliver of Randleman; and sons David Hudson of Julian and Grady Hudson and wife Marti of Greensboro. Also surviving are his brother, Dorman Hudson and wife Ruth of Anderson, Ind.; and a sister, Eula Covert of Winston-Salem. There are also 15 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

HUTCHENS

ARCHDALE - Mrs. Evelyn "Polly" Nelson Hutchens, 73, a resident of 2959 Ebbshore Drive in Archdale, died Oct. 26, 2001, at her residence. She was born March 30, 1928, in Forsyth County, a daughter of the late Lorenza Sheperd and Paulina Nevanda Linville Nelson. She was a resident of the Randolph County area all of her life and retired from Western Electric in 1975. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, James William Hutchens. Surviving are six children, Mrs. Sandy Henderson and husband Harold of Greensboro, Mrs. Bebe Wheat and husband Kenneth of High Point, Mrs. Cathy Fraley and husband Clyde of Archdale, Dr. James "Jimmy" W. Hutchens Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Jerry D. Hutchens and wife Janice of Walnut Cove, and Mark T. Hutchens and wife Tina of LaGrange, Ga.; a brother, Rex. D. Nelson of Archdale; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the chapel of Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale by the Rev. Don White. Entombment will follow in the Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. MORRIS

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Lelia Virginia Hawks Morris, 82, of 428 Maple Grove Church Road in Mount Airy, wife of Mr. Ernest Franklin Morris, died at Northern Hospital of Surry County on Friday morning Oct. 26, 2001. Mrs. Morris was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Surry County to the late Richard Carl and Stella Galyean Hawks. She was retired from RSVP and was the oldest member of Ivy Green Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters and two sons-in-law, Mildred Marshall and Maxine Carlisle, both of Mount Airy, Loyce and Curtis Sowers of Floyd, Va., and Melody and Steven Slaughter of Willis, Va.; a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Edward and Judy Morris of Lowgap; 17 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Hazel York of Mount Airy, and Mary and Wayne Moore, and Elsie Bryant, all of Lowgap, and Paul Tompkins of Sparta; two brothers and five sisters-in-law, Russell and Barbara Hawks of Mount Airy, and Mitchell and Mabel Hawks, Willie Hawks, and Naomi Hawks, all of Lowgap, and Beatrice Hawks of Mount Airy. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Morris was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Hodges and Maude Tompkins; three brothers, Claude, Swanson and Raleigh Hawks; and two grandchildren, Crystal Morris and Brandon Matthew Slaughter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28, at Ivy Green Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Lester Bryant. Burial will follow in the Morris Family cemetery in Fancy Gap, Va. The family received friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where her body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. PFAFF

Mrs. Eloise Hastings Newell Pfaff, 71, of Winston-Salem went to be with her Lord Thursday, Oct. 25, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Pfaff was born Jan. 5, 1930, in Forsyth County to William and Victoria Gray Hastings. She was a graduate of Kernersville High School and a member of the Kernersville Moose Lodge. Preceding Mrs. Pfaff in death were her first husband, Mr. James Rufus Newell, and her second husband, Mr. Dan Pfaff. Surviving are two daughters, Carole Newell of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Victoria Newell McInnis and husband Wade of North Wilkesboro; three sons, the Rev. Keith Newell and wife Laurie of Franklin, Joey Newell of the home, and Steve Newell and wife Carol of Winston-Salem; and seven grandchildren, Erin, Matthew, Leila, Ian, Faith, Katie and Maggie. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 at Mount Gur cemetery in Kernersville. The Rev. Keith Newell and Carole Newell will be officiating. The family will receive friends Monday prior to the graveside service, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, and at the home (1033 Miller St.) on Sunday afternoon. ROUSSEAU

Mrs. Linda McDuffie Rousseau, 53, was born July 18, 1948, in Winston-Salem. She departed this life Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. Mrs. Rousseau received her education in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public School System, and later attended Durham Business College. She was a 32-year employee of Wachovia Bank and a member of Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board. Linda, or "Granny," as she was called by many, was a mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She offered love, warmth, compassion and wisdom to many. To enjoy her most fulfilled memories, she leaves two daughters, Chiquita and Carla; three grandchildren, Robert, Brandon and Christopher; five brothers, Melvin (Nora) McDuffie of Durham, Jerry (Robbie) McDuffie of Rural Hall, Vincent (Dianne) Pledger of Chapel Hill, and Anthony and Desi McDuffie, both of the city; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at Rising Ebenezer Baptist Church (900 Free St., Winston-Salem) with the Rev. William Brown officiating. Visitation will be held from 12:30 to 1 p.m. before the services at the church. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of services and arrangements.

RUCKER

Mrs. Cleo Wideman Rucker, 80, formerly of 2328 N. Cherry St., passed away Oct. 24, 2001. She was born April 1, 1921, in Anderson, S.C., to the late Wade and Julie Wideman. She was a retired employee of Holiday Inn West. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wade and Julie Wideman; her husband, Outher Rucker; a daughter, Mary Wideman; two sisters and six brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Martha Johnson of Waterburg, Conn.; a sister, Carrie Luckey; a brother, Calvin Wideman; 10 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; other family members and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29, at the Beulah Baptist Church, where the Rev. L.B. Ford will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church, and other times at 1918 Francis St. Arrangements entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (GILMORE)

SIMMONS

REIDSVILLE - Ms. Irene McCoy Simmons, formerly of Reidsville, died Friday afternoon at the Asheboro Health and Rehabilitation Center. As a native of Rockingham County, she attended the local public schools and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School, class of 1946. She pursued further education at Winston-Salem State University, receiving a degree in nursing. Ms. Simmons was a retired licensed practical nurse for Annie Penn Hospital. She was a faithful member of Zion Baptist Church, serving with the Senior Usher Board, Mission Group Number 1, Dorcas, and was a member of the Homemakers Sunday school class. Survivors are a daughter, Ms. Patricia Goodwin of Manhattan, N.Y.; a niece, Ms. Doris Barr of Winston-Salem; nephews Willie B. Malloy and spouse Thomasine, Johnnie Malloy Sr. and spouse Helen, and Robert Malloy and spouse Brenda, all of Winston-Salem; a host of great-nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at noon Wednesday, Oct. 31 from Zion Baptist Church (807 Piedmont Street in Reidsville) with the Rev. Patrick L. Cheston presiding. Interment will follow in the Greenview cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the church. Funeral arrangements are by Johnson & Sons, 115 Holderby Street, Reidsville.
