STONESTREET

ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. - A. Wayne Stonestreet, 67, of 612 Fuller Ave. in Elizabethton, Tenn., died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Surry County, he was the son of the late A. Early and Margie Haynes Stonestreet. He was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church in State Road, and attended Hunter First Baptist Church in Elizabethton, Tenn.. Mr. Stonestreet was a retired salesman with Mid-State ADI and most recently was associated with Lewis Auto Sales. He also served in the U.S. Army. Survivors include his wife Patsy Stonestreet of the home; six sons and five daughters-in-law, A. Wayne, Jr. and Iris Stonestreet of Pilot Mountain, Bruce A. and JoAnn Stonestreet of Mount Airy, Gregory and Donna Journey of Dobson, Jody Stonestreet of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Kevin Scott, Cassie Buckles, Kelly Dwight and Carrie Buckles, all of Elizabethton, Tenn.; three sisters, Norma Maynard of Elkin, Jean Cox of Ronda, and Ann Key of Roaring River; three grandsons, Aaron Michael Buckles and Zachary Scott Buckles, both of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Benjamin Journey of Dobson; three granddaughters and a spouse, Candice and Josh Martin of Mount Airy, and Tiffany and Abby Stonestreet, both of Pilot Mountain; a very special mother-in-law, Pearl Bowers of Elizabethton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 at Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel of Peace with the Rev. Eric Eggers, the Rev. Mickey Beal, and the Rev. Cabel Cox officiating. Music will be under the direction of Donna Journey and A. Wayne Stonestreet Jr. A graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29 in the Grindstaff cemetery. Active pallbearers will be sons A. Wayne Stonestreet Jr., Bruce A. Stonestreet, Gregory Journey, Jody Stonestreet, Kevin Scott Buckles and Kelly Dwight Buckles. Honorary pallbearers will be Raymond Lewis, Ken Callaway and Randy Lewis. Everyone will meet at Tetrick Funeral Home at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29 to go in procession to the cemetery. military honors will be accorded by Capt. Lynn H. Folsom, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2166. SWETLAND

Mrs. Ramona Jean Navey Swetland, 76, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Swetland was born March 27, 1925, in Westfield, N.Y., to Lloyd Bramer and Itha Lake Peck Navey. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church. Two sons, David Swetland and wife Lori of Hubbardsville, N.Y., and Paul Swetland and wife Sandy of Winston-Salem, survive her, Five grandchildren and several great-grandchildren also survive. Also two sisters, Joan Waterman of Cassadaga, N.Y., and Janice Fowler of Albertiville, Ala. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Centenary United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jack Yarbrough officiating. THOMAS

PILOT MOUNTAIN - Mr. Johnny Richard Thomas, 69, of 2160 Osborne-Joyce Road in Pilot Mountain, passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Nov. 6, 1931, in Surry County to John Richard and Ella Martin Thomas. Mr. Thomas was a mechanic and of the Baptist faith. He is survived by his wife Helen Louise Duncan Thomas of the home; two daughters, Carrie Linda Sue Thomas of the home, and Dorothy Faye Thomas of Mount Airy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny M. and Pat Thomas, and Michael Lee and Rachel Thomas, all of Mount Airy, and David Ray Thomas of the home; a special son-in-law, Fred Junior Jones of Pilot Mountain; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Emma and Clarence Childress, and Magdalene and Curtis Reynolds, all of Mount Airy. Mr. Thomas was predeceased by his parents and three sisters, Edith Marie Thomas, Marylou Thomas, and Alene Easter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 at Friendly Chapel conducted by Brother Don Collins, the Rev. Harold Moser, and Brother Tommy Noah. Interment will follow in the Indian Grove cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28 at Cox-Needham. VEACH

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Spry Veach, 89, of Veach Lane, died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Eaton Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John Andrews officiating. Interment will be in Liberty United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. They request memorials be considered for Liberty United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 141 Liberty Circle, Mocksville, NC. Mrs. Veach was born Dec. 18, 1911, in Davie County to the late Aaron H. and Geneva Mayberry Spry. She had worked for Erwin Mills of Cooleemee, was a longtime member of Liberty United Methodist Church, and was an avid gardener and fisherman. She was preceded in death by her husband Lester Veach July 21, 1957; a daughter, Betty Sue Williams; and three brothers. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy V. Cook of Mocksville; three sons, Johnny Ray Veach of Mocksville, Lester Veach Jr. of Cleveland, Tenn., and Aaron Eugene Veach of Rural Hall; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two half sisters, Dorothy Hauss and Phyllis Spry; and three half brothers, Charles, Wayne and Jerry Spry, all of the China Grove, Landis and Kannapolis area; and two special friends, Cathy Moore and Hannah Jones.

WHITENER

CLEMMONS - Mary Jane Whitener died Saturday, Oct. 27, 2001. She was born Sept. 1, 1920, in Winston-Salem to Albert and Sallie Stuart, both deceased. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, E.K. Whitener Jr.; four sons, Ernie Whitener of LaPorte, Texas, John Whitener and Bert Whitener, both of Clemmons, and Paul Whitener of Colorado Springs, Colo.; eight grandchildren; and a brother, Sam Stuart of Winston-Salem. She graduated from Reynolds High School and Woman's College of Greensboro. She taught kindergarten at Lewisville Elementary School and enjoyed the many children whose lives she touched. She was an active member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. She dearly loved her many friends and family. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 29 at Clemmons United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at Clemmons United Methodist Church at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30. Burial will be at Forest Lawn cemetery in Greensboro following the funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of choice; the Children's Ministry of Clemmons United Methodist Church; or the Salvation Army.

WILLIAMS

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Timothy Lee "Gov" Williams, 43, of Union Cross Church Road passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001, at his home. He was born in Yadkin County to Pell and Norma Coe Williams. Mr. Williams worked with H.K.S. Hardware in East Bend. He was preceded in death by a baby brother, Mark Edward Williams; and his grandparents, Dulan and Connie Williams, and Wilson and Maude Coe. Surviving are his parents, Pell and Norma Coe Williams of Yadkinville; his special companion, Pam Alspaugh of Yadkinville; two brothers, Billy (Debbie) Williams of East Bend, and Darrell (Denise) Williams of Yadkinville; a sister, Betty (Sheriff Mike) Cain of Yadkinville; nieces and nephews, Frank, Sarah, Heather, Mindy, and Marcus; and his family in his heart, Steve and Diana Etchison, and Jodie, Jill, and Josh. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Gentry Family Funeral Service on Highway 601 North in Yadkinville. WOOD

Mrs. Anna Pauline Tesh Wood, 89, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Oct. 26, 2001. She was born to the late Osmyn O. and Ollie Disher Tesh on Oct. 12, 1912, in Salem. She married Jesse Thomas Wood on Nov. 19, 1932, in Martinsville, Va. He preceded her in death in 1990. Mrs. Wood was a member of Home Moravian Church and was a member of Home Moravian's Women's Fellowship. She was a charter member and past matron of Walter C. Kearns Chapter No. 298 of the Order of the Eastern Star. She also was a member of the Merry Mixers Bridge Club at the YWCA. Along with her parents and husband, two sisters, Hattie Nunn and Evelyn Cook; and a brother, Osmyn O. Tesh Jr., preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Jesse Thomas Wood Jr., and his wife Candy; and two grandchildren, Susannah "Susie" Wood and Thomas Alexander Wood. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, 2001, at Home Moravian Church. Interment will follow at the Moravian Graveyard. BABB

MANHEIM, Pa. - Sally Pass Babb, 80, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday at the Hospice Center of Lancaster County, Pa., after a brief illness. Ms. Babb retired in 1984 after 17 years of service to children at Overbrook School for the Blind in Philadelphia, Pa., the Methodist Children's Home in Winston-Salem and as director of Brantwood Children's Home in Montgomery, Ala. Ms. Babb's greatest joy was caring for others. A tireless volunteer, she contributed much of her time at the Lancaster Senior Citizen's Center, worked individually with residents of Lancaster House North Apartments and assisted with patients at the Pleasant View Retirement Community in the personal-care and skilled-nursing centers. She was an excellent seamstress and loved birds and gardening. Ms. Babb was born in Winder, Ga., the daughter of Bolie and Mary Lester Pass. Surviving are two sons, Dr. W. Sherrill Babb and his wife, Linda W. Babb of Langhorne, Pa., and R. Kenneth Babb of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Dr. Lynda B. Schmid and her husband, Michael K. Schmid of Lancaster, Pa.; four grandchildren, Corinne B. Gibiltera of Hummelstown, Pa., Michelle B. Stillman of Lancaster, Pa., David Babb of Doylestown, Pa., and Gordon K. Babb of Charlotte; and 11 great-grand-children. She was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother, Odette Steele, Billie Burgin and Otis Pass, all of Greenville, S.C. A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim, Pa.

BAUGUS

ADVANCE - Mr. Richard Junior Baugus, 62, of 1480 N.C. 801 N. died Nov. 28, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born in Onslow County on Sept. 28, 1939, the son of Rose Marie Baugus. Mr. Baugus was employed for 42 years at Carricks Turning Works in High Point. He was also an avid golfer. He is survived by his wife, Linda Douthit Beauchamp Baugus; a stepson, Doug Beauchamp and his wife Annette of Advance; two stepgrandchildren, Brandon and Brooke Beauchamp; a brother, Floyd Baugus of Martinsville, Va.; a sister, Gladys Davis of High Point; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Green Meadows Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael Waters officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

BROWN

ADVANCE - Mr. Matthew Neely Brown, 71, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at his home. Mr. Brown was born in Braxton County, W.Va., July 13, 1930. He was married for 47 years to Jeannie Allen Brown, who survives. Mr. Brown was employed for 29 years as a field service technician for Gravely Tractors. He was preceded in death by his parents, Janie Viola Ocheltree and Wesley Matthew Brown. He served his country in the Marines during the Korean War. Mr. Brown was of the Baptist faith. He is also survived by four daughters, Janie Brown Phillips of Pfafftown, Sonja Brown Sherrill (Todd) of Mocksville, Linda Brown Gallagher (Patrick) of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Cherie Brown of Lexington; and a son, Edward Neely Brown (Terri) of Danbury. Also surviving Mr. Brown are seven sisters, Katy Brown, Mary Brown Wine and Freda Brown Heater of Burnsville, W.Va., Sue B. Ramsey of Roanoke, W.Va., Zola Charters of Clear Lake, Calif., Beulah Richardson of Poca, W.Va., and Hazel Hawkins of Mantua, Ohio; and two brothers, Harry Brown of Burnsville, W.Va. and Donnie Brown of Chatham, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Wesley Taylor Phillips, Haley Nicole Smith, Christopher Todd Sherrill, Marybeth Sherrill, Kaylin Alexandria Gallagher, Emily Marie Gallagher and Patrick Michael Gallagher; and his loyal companion, "Dad's Dog", Ferguson. Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Davie Funeral Service Chapel, 416 Valley Road, Mocksville. A graveside service will be conducted by the Rev. Ronzel Roberts at Little Kanawak Memorial cemetery in Heather, W.Va., at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. Memorials can be made to the Kate B. BURNS

Mr. John S. "J.S." Burns, 68, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 8, 1933, in Guilford County to John Shelton Burns Sr. and Ella Dixon Burns. Mr. Burns graduated from James B. Gray High School in 1951. He served four years in the U.S. Air Force, returning to work for A&P Grocery Store for 27 years, including managing Sherwood Plaza and Stratford Road stores. He concluded his work career as a realtor for Lambe-Young Caldwell Bankers, retiring after 17 years of performing work he truly enjoyed. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Selwyn Miller Burns of the home; a daughter, Karen M. Burns of Santa Fe, N.M.; a sister, Carolyn Gentry and husband Bill of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Tracy A. Joyce of Chapel Hill and Adam N. Crenshaw of Chimayo, N.M.; two nephews, Robert Gentry of Winston-Salem and Gary Gentry and wife Tracy of Durham; three brothers-in-law, R. Douglas Miller of Winston-Salem, David Miller and wife Kathi of Tifton, Ga., and John A. Miller of Wilmington. A graveside service will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Forsyth Memorial Park, with the Rev. Gene Ryder officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. CLINKSCALES

Mr. Louie Marion Clinkscales, 73, of 4509 Tise Ave. passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after an extended illness. He was born March 6, 1928, in Greenville, S.C., to the late Louie and Lillian Clinkscales. Louie was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and attended Winston-Salem Teachers College, now Winston-Salem State University. He was a member of the Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church, where he was a member of the trustee board, a former deacon and elder emeritus. Mr. Clinkscales was a member of the American Legion Post No. 128 and also the Camel City Elks Lodge No. 1021. He is survived by his loving wife, Bertha Clinkscales of the home; six sons, Turman (Vickie) Clinkscales and Gerald (Darlene) Clinkscales, both of Winston-Salem, Carl (Linda) Clinkscales of Atlanta, and Ronnie (Marie) Clinkscales, Gregory (Michelle) Clinkscales and Duane Barnes, all of Greenville, S.C.; four daughters, Darlene Clinkscales, and Charlene Clinkscales of Greenville, S.C., and Angela (Tony) Randall, and Pamela (Kenneth) Turner, both of Columbus, Ohio; five stepdaughters, Florence (Franklin) Ross, Roslyn (Windell) Foote, Marilyn Jackson and Cynthia Matthews; a stepson, Kenneth (Angela) Matthews; a sister, Pearl Lee of Burlington; a brother, Louie Clinkscales of Greenville, S.C.; 23 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives, friends; and a beloved church family. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the Greater Cleveland Avenue Christian Church with the Rev. Sheldon McCarter officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. DANIELS

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Laurice Lee "Dan" Daniels died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Duke Hospital Medical Center. Mr. Daniels was born in Atlantic, the son of Coast Guardsman Lee Daniels and Tamsy Hill Daniels. He was a graduate of Atlantic Christian (now Barton College) in Wilson, where he was active in campus activities. He was a member of the Phi Delta Gamma fraternity and was the business manager of the college annual. Mr. Daniels served in the U.S. Army in the occupation forces in Germany. He taught school in Forsyth and Davidson counties, then he joined Western Electric Co., retiring after 27 years as a technical writer. During retirement, he was an active volunteer, serving at Contact, Crisis Control, and at the reading lab in Yadkinville School. Mr. Daniel was an accomplished pianist and his most recent study of piano was at the N.C. School of the Arts. He was a member of Clemmons Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder. His parents; a sister, Martha Ricks; a niece, Pamela Ricks; and a nephew, Wade Ricks, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hauser Daniels; a daughter, Emily Daniels Melear; a son-in-law, Dr. Nathan Melear; a granddaughter, Moira-Nyah Melear, all of Watkinsville, Ga.; an extended family, Dr. Claude Melear and Hewitt Gehres of Knoxville, Tenn., Mr. Jerrell Melear of Fairburn, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Horton of Louisburg and Mrs. Guelda Raeburn of Morehead City; two nieces, Mrs. Barbara Hernandez of Belsair, Wash. and Ms. Janet Kimbrough of Louisburg; and three nephews, Steve Raeburn of Morehead City, Fred Raeburn of Pelham, N.Y. and Bruce Babbitt of Atlantic. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Clemmons Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends at the church after the service. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to any Humane Society; or the charity of the donor's choice. Arrangements are under the direction of Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel.

EATON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Raymond Elbert Eaton Sr., 83, of 1365 E. Pine St., the widower of Violet Jenkinson Eaton, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at his home. Mr. Eaton was born in Surry County on May 27, 1918, the son of the late Edgar Joseph Eaton Sr. and Dora Ella Atkins Eaton. Mr. Eaton owned and operated Eaton TV Repair and Sales for many years and was a charter member of Welcome Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond and Mildred Eaton and John and Brenda Eaton, all of Mount Airy, and David and Jane Eaton of Dobson; four grand-children, Ray Eaton of Rock Hill, S.C., Joe Eaton of Dobson and Johnny Eaton and Jamie Eaton, both of Mount Airy; four step-grandchildren, Dale Burkhart, Tracey Petty, Donald Burkhart and Jason Burkhart, all of Mount Airy; five great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two sis-ters, Ruth Cooke and Peggy Eaton, both of Mount Airy; and three brothers and a sister-in-law, Hobert Eaton of Delaware, Vance and Margaret Eaton of Mount Airy and Ed Eaton of Rural Hall. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Eaton was preceded in death by a brother, Orbie Eaton. The funeral service will be 2 p.m. Sun-day, Dec. 2, 2001, at Moody Fun-eral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The Rev. Winfred Culler will con-duct the service. Burial will be in Oakdale cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

EIDSON

ELKIN - Mrs. Hattyebelle Greene Eidson, 97, of 700 Johnson Ridge Road passed away Thursday morning at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. She was born Sept. 8, 1904, in Yadkin County to Thomas N. and Lennie Gray Greene. A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Hollywood cemetery, Elkin, conducted by Dr. Bill Johnson, the Rev. Joe Dell Rust and the Rev. Sanford Giles. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church. Mrs. Eidson was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church. She attended Appalach-ian State Teachers College and Western Carolina College and was a schoolteacher before raising a family. She was retired from the Chatham Country Store and worked for many summers at Brinegar Cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred O. Eidson; and three sisters, Octa Walker, Vickie Hanes and Lillie Pardue. She is survived by three sons, Fred G. and wife Jane Eidson of Elkin, Gale and wife Dianna Eidson of Atlanta and Kent and wife Lorene Eidson of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. F.M. "Ennis" Finney of Elkin; six grandchildren, Amy Eidson Tayloe, Jeffrey C. Eidson and John T. Eidson, all of Elkin, Charlotte Eidson of Morganton and Hunter Eidson and Chase Eidson Ashadele of Atlanta; and seven great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Elkin; or to a charity of the donor's choice. The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the memorial service and other times at the home of Fred and Jane Eidson, 203 Knollwood Drive, Elkin. Grandview's Tri-County Memorial Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of arrangements.

HARTZOG

JEFFERSON - Howard Dudley Hartzog Jr., better known as Doug, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at his home. Mr. Hartzog was born April 12, 1964, in Winston-Salem to Howard Dudley Hartzog Sr. and Peggy Saultz Hartzog. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Badger Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Archie Jones and the Rev. Ray Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. before the service. The family will also visit with friends after the service. The family requests no food or flowers, please. Memorials may be made to the Hartzog cemetery Fund, c/o Dawna Benedict, 1015 Canoe Gap Road, West Jefferson, NC, 28694. Mr. Hartzog is survived by his wife, Martha Church Hartzog; his parents, Dudley and Peggy Hartzog of The Villages, Fla.; a stepdaughter, Jessica Jones; and his grandmothers, Jenny Hartzog and Ella Mae Woodie of Jefferson. Condolences may be sent to the family at badger@funeral-plans.com. Badger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
