Bowen

Mrs. Mabel Douglas Bowen, 109, formerly of 462 Lockland Ave., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Salemtowne. She was born Dec. 23, 1891, in Yadkin County, daughter of the late Thomas S. and Fannie Wilson Douglas. Mrs. Bowen was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and a graduate of Salem College, Class of 1912. She graduated as valedictorian of her class and could recite most of the valedictory address she gave at graduation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Gray Bowen Sr.; a son, Jesse G. Bowen Jr.; two daughters, Sophia Bowen Clay and Peggy Bowen Leight; a son-in-law, George Staples Leight Sr.; a grandson, William Bowen Leight; three brothers, Albert N. Douglas, G. Wilson Douglas and Thomas S. Douglas. Surviving are a daughter, Sara Bowen Gibbs and husband Dr. Stuart W. Gibbs of Gastonia; a daughter-in-law, Marion Davis Bowen of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, David Clay and wife Ann of Salisbury; grandsons Dr. George Staples and wife Pam Leight Staples of Durham, Stuart Wynn Gibbs Jr. and wife Cindy of Greenville, S.C., Douglas Bowen and wife Pam of Winston-Salem, Gray Bowen and wife Renee of Dallas, Texas, and William Derek Leight of Chapel Hill; granddaughters Dr. Melanie Anne Leight of Charlottesville, Va., Kristin Louise Leight of Boston, Mass., Ann Blatzer and husband Bruce of Columbus, Ohio, Gail Parker and husband Dr. Byron Parker of Laurens, S.C., Penny Shields and husband Paul of Sanford, Nancy Davis Bowen of Greensboro, Mary Bowen Wood and husband Charles of Asheville, Colin Walker and husband Ray of Atlanta, Ga., Julia Newsom and husband Edward of Atlanta, Dr. Louise Clay of Florence, S.C., and Ginny Young and husband Robin of Greensboro; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church with the Rev. James Cobb officiating. Brannon

EAST SPENCER - Ms. Vera Onetta "Tiny" Brannon, 66, of Geroid Street in East Spencer, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Southern Maryland Hospital Center in Clinton, Md. Ms. Brannon was born Nov. 28, 1935, in Salisbury, the daughter of the late George E. and Hattie Hairston Brannon. She was a graduate of Dunbar High School in East Spencer, and the K.B. School of Nursing in Winston-Salem. She was a retired registered nurse at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in Salisbury. She was a member of Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church in East Spencer, where she was a member of various organizations within the church; the National Hairston Clan, Inc.; the Chi Eta Phi Sorority; the Knight of Phythias; the Omega Court of Calanthe #214; and served as a nurse for the Grand Court of Calanthe for the State of North Carolina. She is survived by a daughter, Doris Brannon Tucker of Camp Springs, Md.; two brothers, James "Jimmy" Brannon of Cleveland, Ohio, and Calvin Brannon of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Mary Thompson of Winston-Salem, Allene Poe of Salisbury, Carolyn Davis of Florissant, Mo., and Marion Himmons of Cleveland, Ohio; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Southern City Tabernacle AME Zion Church with the Rev. Rollings Graham, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Noble & Kelsey Funeral Home, Inc., Salisbury, N.C.

Clinard

Mr. Allan Roy Clinard, 64, of Winston-Salem was the beloved and faithful husband of Sandra Hudspeth Clinard. He died peacefully at Forsyth Medical Center on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. He was born to Roy Winfred and Dessie Morris Clinard on Oct. 12, 1937, in Guilford County. Allan was a career long-distance truck driver, whose handle was "Gunsmoke," and traveled many miles across the Eastern Seaboard. From his many travels, Allan made lifelong friends who will remember him for his quiet manners, hard work and friendly smile. He was awarded several safe-driving awards throughout his long career. His parents; a daughter, Emily Clinard; and a sister, Catherine Brendle preceded him in death. Allan is survived by his loving spouse, Sandra; two daughters, Cindy Kicklighter and her husband Bob of Charleston, S.C., and Jan Clinard of Winston-Salem; and three sons, David Neal of Davidson County, Stephen Clinard and his wife Jeanne of Kitty Hawk and Jonathan Clinard of Winston-Salem. Allan was a warm and loving grandfather, "Papaw," to Phillip and Adam Clinard, David Powell, Robby Kicklighter and Sarah and James Clinard. Also surviving are three brothers, Paul Clinard of Greensboro, Nolan Clinard of Cleveland, Ga., and Lowell Clinard of High Point; a sister, Kay Pruitt of Union Grove; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. His faithful four-legged "children" also survive Allan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Vogler & Son's Reynolda Road Chapel. The Rev. Todd Brock will officiate. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Triad, 202 CentrePort Drive, Greensboro, NC 27409; or the charity of the donor's choice. Dezern

Mr. James Edward Dezern, 76, passed away early Friday morning, Nov. 30, 2001, at home. He was born June 28, 1925, in Forsyth County. He served his country in the 101st Airborne Paratroopers during World War II. Surviving the Battle of the Bulge, his family considers him a war hero. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorethea Swaim Dezern; and his father and mother, Eddie and Daisy Dezern. He is survived by his wife Peggy Dezern; two sons, Brad Dezern of Winston-Salem, and Jeff Dezern of Lewisville; a daughter, Karen Brannock of Pfafftown; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild; three sisters, Madeline Dowell (Sam) of Delaware, Opal Brown of Washington, and Ola Mason of Winston-Salem; and three brothers, Raymond Dezern (Nelda) of Rhonda, Windell Dezern (Irene) of Salisbury, and Bobby Dezern of Pfafftown. He leaves behind many loved ones and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Memorial Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at Swan Creek Baptist Church cemetery in Yadkin County. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Doub

CLEMMONS/LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Metzel B. Doub, 75, of the Clemmons/Lewisville area, passed away Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. She was born to Ashley Mock and Nora Elizabeth Todd Binkley Feb. 12, 1926, in Winston-Salem. She married Harold Lee Doub Jan. 21, 1946, in Winston-Salem. She was a lifelong member of Warners Chapel Church of Christ, and was a former Sunday School teacher. She was a loving wife and mother, and was an avid gardener. Her father; a daughter, Pamela Essex; and her stepfather, Andrew Jackson Holder, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband Harold L. Doub of the home; two daughters, Marcia D. Carter and Karen D. Barnes, both of Nashville, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Adam Anders, Beau Carter, Bethany Carter Johnson, and Nick Barnes; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Johnson; her mother Nora Holder of Clemmons; and numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Warners Chapel Church of Christ. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Minister Denton Landon will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Senior Services Inc., 836 Oak St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Durback

ADVANCE - Mrs. Brooke Whittington Durback, 20, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born July 12, 1981, in Forsyth County to Timothy and Teresa Baxley Whittington. She was of the Baptist faith, and enjoyed computers, the outdoors, and loved her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Joshua "Josh" Durback of the home; maternal grandparents, David and Gail Baxley of Atlanta and Mary and Roy Holt of Winston-Salem; paternal grandparents, Josephine and Julius Van Tuttle Jr. of Advance; two brothers, Timothy Whittington Jr., and Alex Whittington, both of Advance; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Gregory and Ava Durback of Ripley, W.Va.; along with several cousins. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Keith Truman officiating. Entombment will follow at Westlawn Garden of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Frye

TAYLORSVILLE - Quez Maloy Frye Sr., 63, died Friday afternoon, Nov. 30, 2001, in Iredell Memorial Hospital in Statesville. He was born Tuesday, May 24, 1938, in Alexander County to the late Earl Lafayette and Saloma Irene Bowman Frye. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served from 1956 to 1958. He was a member of Mountain Ridge Baptist Church. He had been a truck driver for over 30 years, had run a Charlotte Observer paper route, and had served as a security guard at Alexander Central High School. He was a member of the Republican Party. Survivors include his wife Kaye Williams Frye; two sons, Quez Maloy Frye Jr. and wife Lisa of Winston-Salem, and Robert Henry Frye of Charlottesville, Va.; five daughters, Annette Frye Kiser and husband Ron of Troutman, Beverly Frye of Mooresville, Jennifer Frye Hefner and husband Gordon of Bethlehem, Linda Bowman of Boston, Mass., and Melissa Frye Barnette and husband Darron of Hickory; four grandchildren, Jade Frye and Cassie Frye, both of Winston-Salem, Tayler Kiser of Troutman, and Vanessa Barnette of Hickory; two brothers, Gene Frye of Taylorsville, and the Rev. Stan Frye of Hickory; a sister, Libby Frye Pittman of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 at Mountain Ridge Baptist Church and cemetery by the Rev. David Chapman, the Rev. Stan Frye, and the Rev. Gary Jennings. The family will receive friends at Mountain Ridge Baptist Church immediately following the funeral service. Active pallbearers will include Ned Herman, Terry Grisham, Scott Frye, Byron Frye, Joel Frye and Michael McKinney. Gobble

MOCKSVILLE - Alexis Nichole Gobble, the infant daughter of Joshua Wayne Gobble and Amanda Leigh Wagoner, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001. Surviving Alexis are her great-grandparents Bud and Shirley Hauser, and Maxine Wagoner; great-great-grandparents, David and Edna Hendrix; great-great grandma Ollie Wagoner; grandparents Donald and Sheila Gobble, and Janet and Junior Roberson; great-grandparents Margie and Tom Gobble; great-great-grandfathers, Leonard Mayhew and John J. Gobble; and several aunts and uncles. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 at Davie Funeral Service Chapel. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at the Yadkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Aaron Carter and the Rev. Will Pryor officiating. Davie Funeral Services Inc. Gray

KERNERSVILLE -Mr. David Darnell Gray, 49, of 9101 County Line Road died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Moses Cone Hospital. Mr. Gray was born in Forsyth County, a son of Russell and Iris Darnell Gray, and was an employee of United Parcel Service with over 20 years service. Mr. Gray was a devoted husband, father and son and was always ready to help anyone in need, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Colfax Baptist Church and attended the Kernersville Moravian Church. He devoted much of his time to children with special needs, always there to assist on field trips and fishing trips. He attended GTCC and was an avid computer enthusiast. Surviving are his wife, Mary "Maggie" Stone Gray of the home; three daughters, Mollie Gray and Heather Gray of the home and Chantelle Doyle of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; a grandson, Caleb Doyle; his mother, Iris Darnell Gray of Colfax; a sister, Julie Dawes of Stokesdale; and a brother, Brian Gray of Colfax. A memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Kernersville Moravian Church by the Rev. Don Winters and the Rev. Edward Gray. Hanes

LEXINGTON - Lois Arlene Walser Hanes, 84, of Welcome-Arcadia Road in Lexington, died early Friday morning, Nov. 30, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Alvin Pope officiating. Burial will be in the Arcadia United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. Hanes was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Davidson County to William Davis Walser and Clara Vestal Hobbs Walser. She was a homemaker and was a member of Yadkin College United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Holland Hanes; a daughter, Janice Stone; and eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by two daughters, Betty Hanes Hargus of Arizona, and Pearline Hanes White of Winston-Salem; two sons, Curtis R. Hanes of Little River, S.C., and Steve R. Hanes of Lexington; three sisters, Doris Burrows, Mozelle Koontz, and Nannie Sue Livengood, all of Lexington; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sun day at Piedmont Funeral Home, and other times at the residence.

Herke

PFAFFTOWN - Mrs. June Hudgins Herke, 80, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a brief illness. She was born June 1, 1921, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Alexander and Harriette May Cash Hudgins. Mrs. Herke was educated and lived the majority of her life in Forsyth County. A lifelong Methodist, she was a former member of Marvin United Methodist Church. For several years, she showed and sold homes for Grandview Construction Co. Her love of people later led her to share her artistic talents. Her specialties included interior design, decorative painting and decoupage. She taught classes at and eventually assumed ownership of the Green Cottage in Pfafftown. She later opened June Herke's Craft House, also in Pfafftown. Mrs. Herke was deeply loved and cherished by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Natasha Elizabeth Rothrock Herke. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Peter Herke of Pfafftown; two sons, John Herke and wife Margaret of Denton, and Robert Herke of Pfafftown; a daughter, Holly Herke of Pfafftown; an aunt, Janice Cash, widow of uncle Henry Lee Cash, of Rural Hall; a cousin, Phyllis Gross and family of Alexandria, Va.; a sister-in-law, Mildred Galaboff and family of Cleveland, Ohio; and a brother-in-law, Charles Herke and family of Cleveland, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Jackson

Mrs. Sarah Rebecca Gerald Jackson, 79, of 1903 East 25th Street, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the home of her daughter, Sandy Smitherman (24 Palm Tree Court in Greensboro) after a period of illness. She was born Nov. 9, 1923, in Mullins, S.C., the daughter of George and Susan Blackmond Gerald. She was a member of the St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Mother's Board, the Pastor Aide, Missionary Group, Usher Board and the Good Samaritan Club. She was employed by Dr. William Rabil. Mrs. Jackson was preceded in death by two sisters, Agnes Brandenburg and Viola McKee. She is survived by her son, Norman Johnson (Patricia) of Rural Hall; two daughters, Mrs. Susan Johnson of the home, and Sandy (Tony) Smitherman of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Monteous A. Smitherman of Cleveland, Ohio, and Keotia E. Smitherman and Lia Smitherman, both of Greensboro; a great-granddaughter, Desiree Smitherman of Greensboro; three sisters, Janie Ruth Henley, Cherrie Reaves and Ethel Boatwright, all of South Carolina; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at St. Stephen Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Joseph R. Samuels officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. James

Mr. Leon Woods James, 69, of 2208 Elbon Drive, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native and resident of Winston-Salem, born Dec. 21, 1931, to the late Colon and Connie James. He was a member of Exodus United Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and was a helper in all areas of the church. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 28 years of service. Leon was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He was a charter member of the Ralph R. Morgan American Legion Post 220. He was preceded in passing by three brothers, Russell James, Coleman James and Robert James; and a sister, Thelma James. He is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Alice James of the home; three sons, Martin Scales (Liz), Nashid Rahmaan (Cathy), and Timothy Rice, all of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel Jackson (James), Dot Thomas, and Lucinda Goodwine (Glenn); two sisters-in-law, Arnstine Crawford (the Rev. Lewis), and Queen James; two brothers-in-law, Charles Rice (Pat), and Thaddeus Rice (Olivia); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and good friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 from Second Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Johnny Stowe officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Kirkman

LEXINGTON - Maria Sherwood Beck Kirkman, 91, of Greenway Drive in Lexington died at 6:52 p.m. Friday at Lexington Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel. Dr. Ray Howell III and the Rev. Tommy Wilson will officiate. Burial will be at Forest Hill Memorial Park. Mrs. Kirkman was born April 12, 1910, in Davidson County to Jesse Burton Beck and Margaret Jane "Jennie" Young Beck. A graduate of Appalachian Teachers College, she taught in Lexington City and Davidson County schools, and was a member of First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, A. Victor Kirkman, on Aug. 17, 2001; a son, James Sherwood Kirkman, on March 4, 1972; and two sisters, Margaret Beck Myers and Virginia Beck Moore. Surviving are a son, A. Victor Kirkman Jr. and his wife Jacqueline of Charlotte; two grandchildren, Laura Waddell and husband Eddie of Winston-Salem, and Michael Kirkman and wife Rachel of Greensboro; two brothers, Jack Beck and wife Audrey of Asheboro, and Charles Sheffield Beck of Florida; and a sister, Louise Griggs of Churchland. Locke

WINSTON-SALEM - Mrs. Eloise DeEtta Smith Locke, 81, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at home. Eloise was born March 1, 1920, in Kernersville to the late James Edgar and Annie Lee Smith. Eloise graduated from Sedge Garden High School in 1938, where she was a member of the girls' basketball team. She attended the Woman's College, University of North Carolina at Greensboro. In the fall of 1942, Eloise wanted to help the war effort and volunteered as a civilian technician. In January 1943, she was assigned to the military Intelligence Division of the War Department at Arlington Hall, Va. Eloise lived in Washington, D.C., and in August 1945, on a blind date, met Capt. David W. Locke, who was on leave from the 3rd Army Anti-Aircraft, having served in Europe under the command of Gen. George Patton. Eloise and David were married Feb. 8, 1947, at Kernersville Moravian Church. They lived in Chicago, Ill.; Philadelphia, Pa.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and Winston-Salem. Eloise was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Barbara Doris Smith Haven (husband Kenn). Surviving are her husband David W. Locke of the home; a son, James W. Locke of Wausau, Wis.; a daughter, Linda J. Locke of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a grandson, Robert M. Locke of La Cross, Wis.; and a granddaughter, Laura A. Locke of Minneapolis, Minn. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Mt. Gur cemetery in Kernersville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville. Memorials may be directed to Hospice and Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. McCain

Mrs. Maggie Magalene Miller McCain, 90, formerly of 1625 E. Third St., 202-A, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 11, 1911, in Advance to the late Jeff and Maggie N. Miller. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Sadie Ellis and Annie Bell Conrad; and three brothers, Robert Miller, Arthur Miller and Early Miller. She is survived by three daughters, Mary Lee Carter of Kernersville, and Lenoir Juanita Carter and Linda (Albert) Anderson, both of Winston-Salem; 16 grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara Miller of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 from the Ambassadors Cathedral with Bishop F.D. Patterson officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen cemetery.
