Oestreich

MOORESVILLE - Maurine Lane Oestreich, 62, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. She was born Dec. 26, 1932, in Miami, Fla., and was the daughter of the late Compton K. Lane. She was a homemaker, a member of Bethania Moravian Church in Winston-Salem affiliated with New Beginning Moravian Church of Huntersville, and a member of Spinning Moors Square Dance Club, Mooresville/Lake Norman Area Newcomers Club, Mooresville Women's Golf Association, The Seedlings, and The Rebecca Oddfellows Women's Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, Darold E. Oestreich; her mother, Dolly Wheeler Lane; a son, Christopher Oestreich of Atlanta, Ga.; a stepson, Phillip Oestreich of Wilmington; a foster son, Kevin Bayes of Spokane, Wash.; and a brother, Compton J. Lane and wife Donna of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Lake Norman Funeral Service in Huntersville with the Rev. Chris Thor officiating. A graveside service then will be held at 3 p.m. at the Bethania Moravian Church cemetery in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home in Mooresville. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to New Beginnings Moravian Community, 442 S. Main St., Davidson, NC 28036. Cavin-Cook Funeral Home of Mooresville and Lake Norman Funeral Service of Huntersville are serving the family of Mrs. Oestreich.

Paschal

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Melvina Kendall Boggan Paschal, of 2420 Camden Road in Greensboro died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Moses Cone Extended Care. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Guilford Memorial Park. Melvina was born May 30, 1907, in Stuart, Fla., to James Wellington and Vara Hendley Boggan. She was a graduate of Woman's College (University of North Carolina at Greensboro), and was a schoolteacher before becoming a full-time wife and mother. She was a member of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church and lived with the quiet assurance of her faith. Mrs. Paschal was preceded in death by her husband, Frank L. Paschal; and her brother, James W. Boggan of Wadesboro. She was the matriarch of her family, all of whom continue to draw strength and share love from their memories of her. She is survived by two daughters and a son, Carolyn Paschal Moury and her husband Dan of Burlington, Judy Paschal Pemberton of Greensboro, and Frank Paschal Jr. of Clemmons. She also is survived by her sister, Annie Boggan Norris; four grandchildren, James "Jim" Moury of Winston-Salem, Jane Moury Kane and her husband Patrick of Winston-Salem, Stewart Pemberton and his wife Catherine of Raleigh, and Stacy Pemberton of Raleigh; and four great-grandchildren, Boggan, Kendall and Mary Carolyn Kane, and Brittany Kellison, all of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at Hanes-Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel, and at other times at 2420 Camden Road, Greensboro. Pohl

BERMUDA RUN - Dieter Pohl, 83, of Bermuda Village, died Nov. 30, 2001, at the Palliative Care Unit at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. He was a retired professor of physics at the University of Tennessee. Survivors include his wife, Flip Pohl; daughters Carol Wiggins, Nancy Lawson and Janet Fowler; a stepson, William Breckenfeld; grandchildren Melinda, Kendra, Julia, Sarah, Peter and Liam; and a sister, Margit Goldsmith. A private family memorial Mass will be held Dec. 8 at Holy Family Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palliative Care Unit, Forsyth Medical Center, Ninth Floor, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Memorial Funeral Chapel is serving the Pohl family.

Potter

Mrs. Linda Allen Potter, 53, of Winston-Salem, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at her home. She was born Sept. 29, 1948, in Alleghany County to Claire and Wilma Krillke Allen. Surviving are her husband, Larry Potter, of the home; two brothers, William Allen of Thomasville, and Robert Allen of Dravosburg, Pa.; a sister, Carol Allen of Winston-Salem; a niece, Kerri Jacko and husband Joseph of Elizabeth, Pa.; a nephew, Robert Allen and wife Marcia of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and two great-nieces, Madeline Claire Allen and Emily Jacko. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by Chaplain Fred Moretz.

Ruffin

GREENSBORO - Mrs. Tippy Ruffin, 92, of 3560 Wildflower Drive in Greensboro, formerly of Winston-Salem, passed away quietly Nov. 29, 2001. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Salem cemetery in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Ruffin was born in Winston-Salem July 10, 1909, to the late Robert S. and Dan Miller Galloway. After finishing school, she married Thomas Ruffin "Judge" in 1930. She was a homemaker and a cherished mother whose soul radiated love to family and friends. Throughout her life she pursued, and was skillful at, many activities from golf and quail hunting to bridge. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, Debutante Committee, Embroidery Club, Junior Leaque, Old Towne Club, Roaring Gap Club, St. Annes Circle, St. Paul's Episcopal Church and the Twin City Garden Club. Tippy's greatest joy was time with those she loved.

BARBEE

KINSTON - Mr. Thomas Gray Barbee, 87, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Harborview Health Care Center in Morehead City. Mr. Barbee was born Sept. 8, 1914, in Durham to the late William Fredrick Barbee and Ilah Reynolds Barbee. He lived in Winston-Salem most of his life and was a graduate of Old Town High School, Class of 1933. Mr. Barbee married Ruby Groner Oct. 29, 1939. She preceded him in death June 28, 1999. He was with Merita Bakery for 40 years, and was sales manager at the time of his retirement. Mr. Barbee was a member of Home Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. He had lived in Kinston since 1967. Mr. Barbee also was preceded in death by his three sisters, Mrs. Burke (Emma Frances) Flynt of Greensboro, Mrs. Claude (Elizabeth) D. Lewis of Reidsville, and Mrs. Joe (Sally) Phillips of Winston-Salem. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Elizabeth) Morcock of Frederick, Md., and Mrs. Allen (Janet) Vail of Morehead City; two grand-children, David Morcock and Sarah Morcock Snider; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. The Rev. Lehoma B. Goode and Pastor Clay Ogren of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Kinston will officiate. Burial will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the Book of Remembrance of Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 2102 Corey Road, Kinston, NC 28504.

BOORAS

Mr. Nicholas P. Booras, of Winston-Salem, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at age 79. He was born in Pensacola, Fla., Sept. 18, 1922, to Peter and Melpo Booras. Mr. Booras joined the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a restaurateur and was the proprietor of Peter Paul Café, Peter Pan Restaurant and later, a partner in Anton's IPD in Greensboro. After retirement, he aided his wife in the opening of Villa Gifts. Surviving are his wife Sophie of the home; two children, Diane Pfefferkorn and husband John of Jacksonville, Fla., and Tim Booras and wife Anne of Julian; four grandchildren, Mark Giordano of San Francisco, Elise Giordano of Frisco, Colo., and Laura and Kathleen Booras, both of Charleston, S.C.; and a mother-in-law, Vasiliki Hondros of Atlanta, Ga. Mr. Booras also is survived by a sister, Dena Pappas of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Theodore Booras of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla., and William Booras of Jacksonville, Fla. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with a Trisagion service at 7:30 p.m. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 4 at the Greek Orthodox Church on Keating Drive with Father Demetri Kangelaris and Father Dennis Canavos officiating. The family requests memorials to be made to the Greek Orthodox Church, 435 Keating Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27103; or to Hospice and Palliative Care, 1100-C South Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BOWMAN

GREENSBORO - Mr. Ozzie Lee Bowman, 71, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Moses Cone Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services for Mr. Bowman will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Centenary United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Westminster Gardens. A native of Stokes County, Mr. Bowman was born July 5, 1930, the son of William Austin and Rebecca Burrow Bowman. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in England and Germany. He retired as captain from the Greensboro Fire Department in 1983 after 25 years of service. Following his retirement, he operated Bowman and Lewis Masonry Co. An active member of Centenary United Methodist Church, Mr. Bowman served on many committees, the Church Council and the board of trustees for many years. He also was a member of the United Methodist Men's Club, and the Roach Sunday School Class, as well as a member of the "Cabinet Crew" that installed cabinetry for Habitat for Humanity building teams. Mr. Bowman was Noble Grand of the International Order of Oddfellows twice, and was president of Dance Club 75. Survivors include his wife, Polly M. Bowman, of the home; a son, Gary L. Bowman, of Athens, Ga.; his mother, Rebecca B. Bowman, of Kernersville; his brother, Wayne Bowman, of Greensboro; and his sisters, Mrs. Betty Blalock, of Whitsett, Mrs. Cecile Clifford, of Charlotte, and Mrs. Nell Adams of Jacksonville, Fla. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at Forbis & Dick Funeral Home, North Elm Street Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Centenary United Methodist Church, 2300 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27403; or Habitat for Humanity, 438 W. Friendly Ave., Greensboro, NC 27401.

BULLINS

WALNUT COVE - Mr. Russell Vance "Bobby" Bullins, 60, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Stokes County to the late Elmer Vance and Pensie Shelton Bullins. He was a retired farmer and a kind, gentle, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed. Surviving are his wife of 39 years, Shirley Joyce Bullins of the home; three children, Vance Bullins and wife Tonya, Sarah Elizabeth Bullins Joyce and husband Tony, and William Maston Bullins; three grandchildren, Jesse L. Joyce, Jacob V. Bullins, and Harley Nathan Joyce; four sisters, Betty Jo Bullins, Nannie Ola Bullins, Nancy Hennis and husband Kenneth, and Mary Hurd and husband Keith; a brother, Odell Bullins and wife Annabelle; and many special nieces and nephews. A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Burroughs Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Nelson officiating. Burial will follow in the Bullins Family cemetery on Pensie Road. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home, and other times at the home.

HANCOCK

COOLEEMEE - Lila Mae Howerton Hancock, 90, died at Autumn Care of Mocksville Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Mary Taylor and John Howerton. Mrs. Hancock was a very active member of First Baptist Church of Cooleemee. She was employed as a cotton textile worker. Mrs. Hancock is survived by two daughters, Jean Baggett (Larkin) of Colonial Heights, Va., and Sue Steele-Correll of Cooleemee; and a son, Harold A. Wagner (Germaine) of Lexington. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Wagner; three sisters, Mable Head, Grace Potts and Virginia Shoaf; and three husbands, Alfred Owens Wagner, Kelly L. Cope and James Hancock. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Cooleemee at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, 284 Marginal St., Cooleemee, NC 27014. Davie Funeral Service Inc. (416 Valley Road, Mocksville, NC 27028) will be serving the family.

JAMES

Mr. Leon Woods James, 69, of 2208 Elbon Drive, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native and resident of Winston-Salem, born Dec. 21, 1931, to the late Colon and Connie James. He was a member of Exodus United Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board and was a helper in all areas of the church. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 28 years of service. Leon was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the Korean War. He was a charter member of the Ralph R. Morgan American Legion Post 220. He was preceded in passing by three brothers, Russell James, Coleman James and Robert James; and a sister, Thelma James. He is survived by his devoted wife of 24 years, Alice James of the home; three sons, Martin Scales (Liz), Nashid Rahmaan (Cathy), and Timothy Rice, all of Winston-Salem; eight grandchildren; three sisters, Hazel Jackson (James), Dot Thomas, and Lucinda Goodwine (Glenn); two sisters-in-law, Arnstine Crawford (the Rev. Lewis), and Queen James; two brothers-in-law, Charles Rice (Pat), and Thaddeus Rice (Olivia); and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and good friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 from Second Calvary Baptist Church with Pastor Johnny Stowe officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. Funeral services for Ms. Marion Lindsey, of 313 East 33rd St., who passed Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 from the Frances S. and Jerry C. MYERS

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Charlie Clarence Myers, 81, died Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Hospital. Mr. Myers was born May 25, 1920, in Yadkin County to Delmer Austin and Girty May Eddleman Myers. He was a self-employed brick mason and a member of Forbush Baptist Church. Mr. Myers was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, and was an avid fisherman. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Thomas Luther Myers. Surviving are his wife Delia Beatrice Hutchens Myers of the home; three children, Judy (Joe) Kilby of Yadkinville, Peggy (Dean) Willard of Yadkinville, and Billy Hugh (Cathy) Myers of East Bend; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Delmer "Junior" Locksley Myers of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Gentry Family Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kelly Porter. Interment will follow in the Forbush Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Gentry Family Funeral Home, U.S. Highway 601 North, Yadkinville, N.C.

NICHOLS

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Col. William G. Nichols (U.S. Army, Ret.) died peacefully yesterday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center with family at his bedside. Son of Glenn and Bernice Nichols (deceased), he was born Nov. 23, 1919, in Indianapolis, Ind., and grew up on Dexter Street and later on 23rd Street. He was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School in Indianapolis and Rollins College in Winter Park, Fla. His 31-year Army career included World War II service in the North African campaign, the invasions of Sicily and Anzio, and Hawaii. His later service included the Korean Conflict and numerous overseas assignments. Upon his military retirement, he started a second career with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where he worked for an additional 18 years, and followed this with a third career at Turtle Creek Golf Course. He is survived by his wife Marjorie Nichols of Rockledge, Fla.; his son, Barry Nichols and wife Kathy, and granddaughter, Cassie, all of Winston-Salem; grandson, Shan Nichols of Atlanta, Ga.; sister-in-law, Bette Nichols; niece, Pam Bond and her husband Jerry and two children; and nephew, Bob Nichols, all of Indianapolis, Ind.; and brother-in-law, Dale Harrah and wife Lois; and niece, Marsh Smith and husband Mike, all of Cloverdale, Ind. He was preceded in death by his brother, Clayton Nichols, in 1999. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 5 with military services at 1 p.m. Col. Nichols will be buried at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Fla.

RODRIQUEZ

Minister Annette L. Rodriquez was born Jan. 16, 1937. She departed this life Nov. 29, 2001, at 180 Highland Ave., Apt. B, after a period of illness. She was a resident of Winston-Salem most of her life. She was an outgoing person. She also loved to attend church. Minister Annette was born to the late Tink Leapard and Cora Bell Lackey. She has a surviving sister, Barbara Milsaps (Bill) of Taylorsville; two brothers, James E. Lackey of Winston-Salem, and the late Gene Crawford of Taylorsville; and two surviving aunts, Lula Lackey (James) and Thelma Lackey (John), both of Taylorsville. She has two devoted cousins who took care of her, April and Tonya Lackey; and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services for Minister Annette Rodriquez will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 in Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home chapel with Pastor Linda Beal officiating. Family visitation will be from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Directors are in charge of all services and arrangements.

KERNERSVILLE - Inez Kiser-Schultz, 80, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Howard Fleming presiding. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel in Kernersville and other times at her daughter's residence (1204 Piney Grove Road, Kernersville). Those who wish may make memorials to Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1018 Piney Grove Road, Kernersville, NC 27284; or Shepherd's Center of Kernersville Inc., 431 Bodenhamer St., Kernersville, NC 27284.

SECHRIST

WEST JEFFERSON - Abigail Faith Sechrist, infant daughter of David Jr., and Kelly Goss Sechrist, of 363 Walter Drive in West Jefferson, died Saturday morning, Dec. 1, 2001, at Ashe Memorial Hospital. She was born Oct. 23, 2001, in Watauga County. In addition to her parents, she is survived by a brother, Cameron David Sechrist of the home; her maternal grandparents, B. Stephenson and Phyllis Johnson Goss of Boone; her paternal grandparents, David Keith Sr., and Brenda Parks Sechrist of Clemmons; her maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Meryl Johnson Queen of West Jefferson; her paternal great-grandparents, Ralph and Mary Sechrist of Winston-Salem; two aunts, Mrs. Heather Anderson and husband Billy of Wilmington, and Carey Sechrist of Clemmons; and an uncle, Andrew Goss and wife Susan of Frankfort, Germany. She was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandfather Wayne Johnson; and her paternal great-grandparents, Nelson and Dorothy Parks. Funeral services for Abigail Faith Sechrist will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Boone. The body will lie in state at the church from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Steve Goss will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Lawn Memorial Park and Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., Tuesday at the church. Flowers are appreciated or memorials may be made to the Phi Mu Foundation, Children's Miracle Network, 3558 Habersham at Northlake, Tucker, GA 30084.
