STEWART

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Bobby Lee Stewart, 69, of 504 Edgewood St., died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Stewart was born in Forsyth County, a son of the late Coy and Annie Lemar Stewart, and was a retiree of Allied Machine Shop and a member of the Kernersville Friends Meeting. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Underwood Stewart in 2000. Surviving are two daughters, Pam Stewart and Rita Faye Stewart, both of Kernersville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Ray and Jetta Stewart of Kernersville, Bobby Jr., and Tida Stewart of Danbury, and Sammy and Ann Stewart of Winston-Salem; two stepsons and their wives, Leon and Nancy Underwood of Siler City, and James and Ann Underwood of Eden; a sister, Betty Rumley and husband Bobby of Kernersville; a brother, James Stewart and wife Ann of High Point; and a special friend, Don Hubbard of Kernersville. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Jerry Gibbons, with burial to follow in the Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

TAYLOR

APEX - Tillett Kirk "T.K." Taylor Sr., 83, died Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, at his home surrounded by his family. T.K. was born in Dallas, N.C., Feb. 13, 1918, to the Rev. R.A. Taylor and Rosmond Lorbacher Taylor. He graduated from Lewisville High School, Lewisville, N.C. He attended Elon College and graduated in textiles at N.C. State College in Raleigh. For more than 50 years, he owned and operated Askew-Taylor Paint and Art Supplies at 110 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh. He was well known for his ability to mix paint colors and for his honesty and courtesy. The citizens of Raleigh along with the West Raleigh Rotary Club and Mayor Tom Fetzer recognized him for the positive things he did for Raleigh by proclaiming Friday, June 19, 1998, as T.K. Taylor Day in Raleigh. His first wife, Doris Askew Taylor, and a son, John Richard "Dickie" Taylor, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife Barbara Baucom Taylor; a son, T. Kirk Taylor of Raleigh; a granddaughter, Hellen Taylor of Raleigh; two sisters, Marguerite Wood of Winston-Salem, and Katherine Stewart of Temple, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3 at Apex Funeral Home, 511 West Williams St. (Highway 55), Apex; and at other times at the home, 2421 High House Road, Apex. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4 at Apex Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. William Mills and the Rev. Craig Furlough will officiate. Burial will be in Green Level Baptist Church cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Wake County, 1300 St. Mary's St., Raleigh, NC 27605. Flowers also will be welcomed.

BARTLETT

Lucille King Bartlett, aka Sister, 86, formerly of 540 Chandler St., died Nov. 24, 2001, at her residence, 337 McFayden Drive, Fayetteville. She was born Feb. 18, 1915, in York, S.C., and was a homemaker. She was a Baptist by faith and a member of Neighborhood Community Watch. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Bartlett; a son, James King; and a daughter, Mae Etta Ruth. She is survived by two sisters, Etta Franklin of Winston-Salem and Mattie Mae Ashford; grandchildren Berna Jean Ruth, Bradney Joyce McWillis, James King (Constance), Carolyn Tuttle, Patricia King, Pauline Sadler (Ronald), Barbara Kultz (Frederick), Jerome King, Carolyn Hairston (William), William Ruth, Dorothy Little (Otis), Wendy Kennedy, and Kenneth Dunbar; a special great-granddaughter, Angela Ruth; a friend, Mary King; and a host of great-grandchildren and other relatives. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Goler Metropolitan AME Zion Church, with Bishop Clyde Turner of Calvary Hill Church of Greater Deliverance officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. at the church and will leave from the residence of her sister, Etta Franklin, 3319 Carver School Road. The family may be reached other times at the home of her granddaughter, Berna Jean Ruth, 1208 E. 12th St. Apt. B. Gilmore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. (Gilmore)

BEAN

EAST BEND - Mrs. Brooxie Dezern Bean, 101, died Nov. 26, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. She was born Feb. 14, 1900, to Fank Dezern and Lucy Jackson Dezern Webb. Her husband, Walter Bean, died in 1988 after 68 years of marriage. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:45 p.m. Nov. 30, 2001, at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. The funeral will follow at 3 p.m. Interment will be at the East Bend cemetery. She is survived by a sister, Vivian Searcy of King; her children, Richard Bean and wife Annette of Greensboro, Donald Bean and wife Marion of Ballwin, Mo., and Bonnie Bean Sherman of Hamden, Conn.; and her daugher-in-law, Imogene Bowman Bean, widow of Edward Bean of Winston-Salem. She also leaves 10 grandchildren and was preceded in death by a grandson. Also sur-viving are 11 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, give to your favorite charity.

FARMER

Mr. H. Leroy Farmer, 69, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 10, 1932, in Forsyth County to the late James Patterson and Ada Vandalia Knight Farmer. Mr. Farmer was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church and was retired from Hanes Dye and Finishing Co. He is survived by his wife, Mary Edwards Farmer of the home; a son, Jamie Farmer and wife Candy of Charlotte; two daughters, Luann F. Phelps and husband Bobby of Winston-Salem and Jodi F. Burton and husband Greg of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; a brother, Belmont Farmer and wife Viola of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Bertha Tuttle and husband Marvin of Walkertown and Ruth Duggins of King. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hay-worth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Chris Byrne. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory cemetery, Walkertown. Memorials may be made to New Friendship Baptist Church/Building Fund, 4258 Old Lexing-ton Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107.

GILLIAM

ELKIN - Mr. John Frank Gilliam, 98, of 700 Johnson Ridge Road passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001. Mr. Gilliam was born in Wilkes County on Dec. 7, 1902, to James Charles Gilliam and Sarah Docia Triplett. He was a 32-Degree Mason and a member for 55 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Erma York Gilliam; a daughter, F. Louise Barney; two sisters, Ethel Miles and Hallie Mae Stuart; and a brother, Joe Gilliam. He is survived by a daughter, Janice Gale Gilliam of New Orleans; three sisters, Pauline Sutton of Elkin, Frances Fisher of Boonville and Naomi Story of Knoxville, Tenn.; a brother, Rufus E. Gilliam of Boyd, Md.; two grandchildren, Lynda Colvard of New York and Judi A. Nauck of New Orleans; eight grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of loving nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the First Baptist Church in Jonesville, by Dr. Ray Hamilton. Burial will follow at the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday evening at Johnson Funeral Home in Elkin.

HOOKS

Mrs. Nora Bondurant Hooks, 103, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her home. She was born July 7, 1898, in Franklin County, Va., to Jacob Preston and Sallie Ramsey Bondurant. Mrs. Hooks was the oldest member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 43 years of service and later volunteered at Forsyth Medical Center for 12 years. Her husband, Larry T. Hooks; two sisters, Masha and Velma Stone, and a stepson, Charles Hooks Sr., preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter-in-law, Lou Wiggins, and husband, Miles, of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren, Lynda Culler, and husband, Jim, and Rose Kiger, and husband, Randy, all of Lexington, and Butch Hooks and wife, Lisa, of Winston-Salem; seven great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; a niece, Arlene S. Melton, of Huntington, W.Va.; and three nephews, Riley V. Stone, of Huntington, W.Va., Jack S. Stone, of Newport Richey, Fla., and J. Jerald Stone of Baltimore, Md. A funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Kevin Conley and the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

JOHNSON

Mr. Roy E. Johnson, 84, of Winston-Salem died Monday evening, Nov. 26, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor of Clem-mons. He was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Forsyth County to Thomas Cooper and Pearl Crater Johnson. Mr. Johnson served in the U.S. Army in the European Theater during World War II and had retired from Wilson Pest Control. He was a member of New Eden Moravian Church and was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers, Nellie J. Minor and Clarence Johnson, both of Winston-Salem, and Wilson Johnson of Newport News, Va. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Sarah Mabe Johnson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Harry New of Grace Lane and Dorothy and Barry Houslander of Castle Rock, Colo.; a stepson, Joe Mabe and wife Jackie of East Berlin, Pa.; two granddaughters and their husband, Pam and Ed Vest of Lexington and Sherri and Chip DeVoto of Morganton; and four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Will and Sarah Grace Vest and Hunter DeVoto. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thurs-day at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Robert M. Peek. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. KIGER

RURAL HALL - Mr. David Monroe Kiger, 77, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice & Palliative CareCenter after a period of declining health. He was a member of Shiloh Methodist Church. Mr. Kiger served in the Navy during World War II and saw active duty in the South Pacific. He retired from Hanes Dye and Finishing. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie "Betsy" Goins Kiger; three brothers; and three sisters. Mr. Kiger is survived by three daughters, Jean Collins and husband Claude of Winston-Salem, Shirley Williams-Anas and husband Chuck of Kernersville and Judy Watson and husband Roger of Rural Hall; a son, Tim Kiger and special friend Cathy Fogleman of Walkertown; eight grand-children, Greg Warner, Vivian Williams, Bronna Gesler, Joe Williams, Sherry Doub, David Watson, Robbie Watson and Brian Kiger; 12 great-grand-children; three sisters, Edith Haywood of Wadeville, Dorothy Wall of Troy and Ruby Bennett of King; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Rural Hall, with the Rev. Otis Goins, the Rev. David Keaton and Minister Ralph Sproles officiating. Interment will follow in Shiloh Methodist Church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at First Baptist Church of Rural Hall. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

KING

Mr. Alfred Joseph King, 71, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2001, at his residence. He was born July 3, 1930, in Merrick, N.Y., to Charles and Louise Heller King. Mr. King was retired from the Nestle Co. and was an elder at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witness, South Winston Congre-gation. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth King, of the home; a daughter, Laura King Martin, and husband, Bob, of Mocksville; four brothers; and a sister. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 1, 2001, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3799 Old Lexington Road, Winston-Salem. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel)

MARSH

Marian McManus Marsh, 84, of 1199 Hayes Forest Drive in Winston-Salem, formerly of Kannapolis, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Feezor Auditorium at Brookridge Retirement Community off Bethabara Road (1199 Hayes Forest Drive, Winston-Salem). The Revs. Maurice Briggs, Charles Edwards and Ray Benfield will officiate. The family will receive friends at Brookridge following the service. Mrs. Marsh, the wife of the late Heath Bascom Marsh of Winston-Salem, was born Feb. 8, 1917, in Monroe. She was the daughter of the late Basil McManus and Essie Tucker McManus. She was a graduate of Mars Hill and Queens colleges with a bachelor of arts degree in English, and was a former officer of the Marsh Co. She retired in 1985 and moved to Greensboro. Since 1990, she had lived at Brookridge Retirement Community in Winston-Salem. She was a member of College Park Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. Survivors include a son, Donald H. Marsh of Concord; three daughters, Frances M. Nesbitt of Cedar Key, Fla., Jane M. Martin of Greensboro, and Anne M. Kennedy of Hickory; a sister, Hilda Henderson of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 634 Ashland Drive, Greensboro, NC 27403. Vogler and Sons Reynolda Chapel is serving the family.

PLUNKETT

WALKERTOWN - Tammy McGee Plunkett, 27, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her Pine Hall Road residence. She was born Oct. 27, 1974, in Hampton, Va., the daughter of David S. and Lucy (Johnson) Shewbridge. Tammy was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, Hampton, Va., was a 1992 graduate of East Forsyth High School and was presently employed by Dillon Supply Co. in Winston-Salem. She is survived by her son, Cory Wayne McGee; her parents, David S. and Lucy Shewbridge; a sister, Anna Marie Kirstine, all of Kernersville; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel, Kernersville, with the Rev. Phil Hulen presiding. Burial will be at Mount Gur cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the funeral home.

PLUNKETT

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. W. Frank "Stringbean" Plunkett Jr., 46, departed this life Monday, Nov. 26, 2001. Frank was born Oct. 17, 1955 son of W.F. "Sonny" Plunkett of Walkertown and Alice McCoy of Roanoke, Va. Frank was a beloved father, son, brother and proud granddaddy, as well as a wonderful friend to many. He owned and operated Oakview Farms Trucking Co. In addition to his parents, Frank is survived by two daughters, Lori Marshall and her husband Joe of Kernersville and Stephanie Woody and her husband Jason of Belews Creek; a son, David Franklin Plunkett of Walkertown; two brothers, Rodney Eugene Plunkett of Roanoke, Va., and Carl Webby Plunkett and wife Laura of Walkertown; three grandchildren, Brandon Tyler Ross, Joseph Dalton Woody and Clayton Henry Woody; nieces and nephews Dustin, Tiffany, and Jamie Plunkett; and his first wife, Judy Plunkett Spainhour. You will be greatly missed. We love you, Dad! A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Chapel. The family will receive friends following the service.

SELLARS

HENDERSON - Mary Meadows Duke Sellars, 87, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at the home of her daughter in Lakeland, Fla. She was a native of Henderson and the daughter of the late Ransom Harris Duke and Rowena Daniel Duke. A lifelong resident of Henderson, she was married in the First Baptist Church to Charles Patrick Sellars, who preceded her in death. She was a charter member of the Contemporary Book Club and was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Henderson. Surviving are a brother, Ransom H. Duke Jr., of New Orleans, La.; two daughters, Marilyn Sellars Leonard, of Lakeland, Fla. and Julia Sellars Davis, of Henderson; and a son, Charles Patrick Sellars Jr., of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Graveside memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, at Elmwood cemetery in Henderson. Visitation with the family will be held at J.M. White Funeral Home one hour prior to the services. SNYDER

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. George Milfred "Bud" Snyder Jr., 80, of 220 Robin Road, husband of Josephine Nichols Snyder, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Snyder was born March 9, 1921, in Glasport, Pa., the son of the late George M. and Helen Brennen Snyder Sr. Mr. Snyder attended Penn State University, was a retired sales executive with Quality Mills Inc. of Mount Airy, former president of the Mount Airy Lions Club, was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II, and was an elder with the First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy. Survivors include his wife, Josephine "Jo" Nichols Snyder of the home; two daughters, Marte S. Burnet and her husband, Gil of Newport News, Va., and Lee Snyder of Durham; a son, George M. Snyder III of Mount Airy; and two granddaughters, Evie Burnet and Caroline Burnet, both of Newport News, Va. In addition to his parents, Mr. Snyder was preceded in death by a sister and brother in law, Evelyn and Eric Larson. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at First Presbyterian Church. The service will be conducted by Dr. Benjamin Williams. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the church's Ladies' Parlor. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the General Scholarship Fund, Surry Community College, 630 S. Main St., Dobson, NC 27017. Moody Funeral Service of Mount Airy is serving the Snyder family.

WILLIAMS

KING - Mrs. Nancy W. Williams, 60, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001. She was born Jan. 9, 1941, in Stokes County to Ed and Hazel White. Mrs. Williams was a member of First Christian Church of King and a cafeteria worker for Stokes County Schools. She is survived by her husband, Vernie Frank Williams, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Mandy and Ronnie Stewart, of Winston-Salem, and Vickie and Mike Bennett and Carol and Barry Newsome, all of King; six grandchildren, Matthew and Michelle Bennett, Robby and Charlie Stewart, Josh Williams and Vince Nelson; her mother, Hazel White, of King; a sister, Pat and Wayne Hauser, of King; and a brother, Eddie and Becky White, of King. Mrs. Williams was preceded in death by her father, Ed White. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at First Christian Church of King conducted by the Rev. Bill Truitt and the Rev. Lamar Tillman. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. Graveside committal services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the First Christian Church cemetery. Memorials made be made to the First Christian Church cemetery Fund, 625 Meadowbrook Drive, King, NC 27021. The Williams family appreciates all the love and support shown by family and friends. The family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

BRANCH

Mrs. Elsie Darden Branch, of 650 Granville Place, Winston-Salem, departed her earthly journey Nov. 29, 2001, at the N.C. Hospice Home, located at Hospice Lane in Winston-Salem, after a brief period of illness. She was born and raised in Conway to the late Jack and Annette Darden, and later moved to Winston-Salem, where she resided for more than 30 years. Mrs. Branch attended the public schools of Pendleton. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Branch was a faithful member of Morning Star Baptist Church, where she served on the nurse's board, the Sunday school and the senior Missionary board. Mrs. Branch was better known to her family and many friends as "Miss Elsie." She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny. She leaves to cherish her loving memories four daughters and four sons, Marion V. Newsome of Como, Samuel L. Branch of Winston-Salem, Collin L. Branch of Galation, Lila Anderson of Washington, D.C., Nettie R. Branch and Joe L. Branch, both of Winston-Salem, Joyce Dickerson of Harrisburg, Pa. and Frenell Branch of Winston-Salem; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Johnny Darden of Rocky Mount; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; a devoted cousin, Virgil Thorton; and several devoted friends, Vera Walters, Pearlie McIntosh, Cherry Booker and Viola, all of whom will cherish her loving memories and miss her very much. A homegoing celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. James Lewis Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, in the chapel of Hooper Funeral Home. The family may be contacted and the cortege will assemble and leave from the home of her son, Samuel L. Branch, 4043 Larkspur Place, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday. (Hooper)
