CAUDLE

EAST BEND - Mr. Herman Garfield "Blue" Caudle, 80, of 4133 Forbush Road, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 30, 1921, in Yadkin County to James Robert and Ila Carter Caudle. Mr. Caudle was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Shelton Caudle. Mr. Caudle was a retired farmer. Surviving are his children, Norma (Archie) Brown, Brenda (Kelly) Hicks, Kathy and son, Justin Slawter, and Darrell (Rita) Caudle, all of East Bend; a sister, Eloise Hobson, of Yadkinville; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel in East Bend by the Rev. Carl McCarn. Burial will follow in the Union Cross Friends cemetery with military honors conducted by the Yadkin VFW Post #10346. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Union Cross Friends cemetery Fund, c/o Angela Adams, 2029 Union Cross Church Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055.

DAUGHTRY

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Robert "Bob" Daughtry, 66, died Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at his home. He was born July 28, 1935, in Sampson County to Henry Silas and Jerona Holland Daughtry. Surviving are his wife, Marie Weeks Daughtry, of the home; a son, Robert Silas Daughtry II and wife, Denise, of Wilmington; a grandson, Eligah Silas Daughtry; a brother, Corbitt F. Daughtry, of Ellicott City, Md.; a sister, Judith Daughtry Pope, of Clinton; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Clinton.

DUGGINS

WALNUT COVE - Mrs. Patricia Carol Vogt Duggins, 69, died Monday at her home. Mrs. Duggins was born July 13, 1932, in Stokes County to the late A.W. Vogt and Lucy Davis Vogt. She was retired from Duke Power and was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Janie Throckmorton. Survivors include her children, Danny Hanes Duggins and wife, Gayle, Bobby Joe Duggins and wife, Gail, of Lynchburg, Va., Cynthia Duggins Ivey of Walnut Cove, Roger Darrell Duggins and wife, Trisha, of Rock Hill, S.C., and Lisa Dawn Duggins of York, S.C.; a sister, Sue Pruitt, of Walnut Cove; a brother, Johnny Vogt, of Madison; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Burroughs Funeral Home with the Rev. Roscoe Bowden officiating. Burial will follow in Sycamore Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

GOUGH

Mr. Paul Leroy Gough, 85, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Springwood Care of Winston-Salem. He was born May 14, 1916, in Yadkin County to the late Calvin A. and Ellen Chamberlain Gough. Mr. Gough was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., was a member of Twin City Baptist Church of Winston-Salem and was a veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Eller Gough; three sisters, Stannie Gough Caudle, Laura Gough Cain and Edith Gough Renegar; and three brothers, Eugene Gough, Claude Gough and Dewell Gough. Surviving are his two sisters, Pearl Gough Swink of Winston-Salem and Thelma Gough Simmons, Yadkinville; and a host of nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Gentry Family Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. Gentry Family Funeral Service of Yadkinville is serving the family.

HANCOCK

COOLEEMEE - Lila Mae Howerton Hancock, 90, died at Autumn Care of Mocksville Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001. She was the daughter of the late Mary Taylor and John Howerton. Mrs. Hancock is survived by two daughters, Jean Baggett (Larkin) of Colonial Heights, Va., and Sue Steele-Correll of Cooleemee; a son, Harold A. Wagner (Germaine) of Lexington; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Eric Wagner; and her husbands, Alfred Owens Wagner and James Hancock. A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Cooleemee at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church of Cooleemee, 284 Marginal St., Cooleemee, NC 27014; or Davie County Hospice, 158 Hospice St., Mocksville, NC 27028. Davie Funeral Service Inc., 416 Valley Road, Mocksville will be serving the family.

HAUSER

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Ms. Margaret Elizabeth Hauser, 65, formerly of Tobaccoville, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, in Brooklyn after a lengthy illness. She was born July 12, 1936, to the late Wiley and Lummie Hauser, was educated in the local public schools and was retired from Brasco Picture Framing Co. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Russell Lee Hauser; two brothers; and two sisters. She is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alta Carter and Mrs. Mattie Glenn, both of Winston-Salem; four brothers, the Rev. Waldo Hauser and Worth Hauser, both of Winston-Salem, Williard Hauser of Tobaccoville and Walter D. Hauser of Kannapolis; and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 7 Thursday evening, Dec. 6, 2001, in the chapel of Russell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Waldo Hauser presiding. The family visitation will be 6:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Russell Funeral Home. (Russell)

HIATT

Lula Veigh Zimmerman Hiatt of Winton-Salem, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born Nov. 18, 1910, the daughter of Frank E. and Ada Tesh Zimmerman of Lexington. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church and was known as a hardworking farmer, who sought daily guidance from her faith in God. Her husband of 29 years, Winfred P. Hiatt preceded her in death Oct. 10, 1965. She had four brothers, David, Fred, Rowan and Claude; and two sisters, Grace Z. Westmoreland and Ethel Zimmer-man, all deceased. Also preceding her in death were nieces Lucille Dowell and Erlene Ann Spear; and nephews Reid Zimmerman and Everette Zimmerman. She is survived by nieces Norma Sink, Ruby Spivey, Lois Collins, Dorothy Craver, Kate Funk and Violet Everhart; and nephew Larrie Zimmerman. She had many great-nieces and nephews, including Rick Sink who cared for her during her last year of life. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. David Calhoun. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Midway United Methodist Church, 9795 Old Highway 52, Lexington, NC 27295.

HOLLAR

TAYLORSVILLE - Ethel Mae Goble Hollar, 71, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001. She was born Friday, Dec. 27, 1929, in Hiddenite to the late William O. Goble Sr. and Alma Patterson Goble. She was a graduate of Hiddenite High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where she served as church secretary for 29 years. She was active in the WMU and was a Sunday-school teacher for the Merry Hearts Sunday-school class. Survivors include the Rev. Mark Hollar and wife Anita of High Point; and grandchildren Laura and Rebekah Hollar of High Point. The Rev. Hollar is the former pastor of Abbotts Creek Missionary Baptist Church in Spruce Pine. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 Thursday evening at Antioch Baptist Church in Bethlehem. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Hollar will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Antioch Baptist Church and cemetery, with the Dr. Rick Jordan and the Rev. Dennis Spivey officiating. The body will lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral hour. Honorary attendants will include the members of the Merry Hearts Sunday-school class of Antioch Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the building fund for an elevator at Antioch Baptist Church, 580 Antioch Church Road, Taylors-ville, NC 28681; or the Hickory Foundation YMCA, 701 First St. NW, Hickory, NC 28601. The Hollar family has entrusted the care of the arrangements with Alexander Funeral Service in Taylorsville.

HORTON

WILKESBORO - Mr. Jonathan Palmer Horton Jr., better known as "Poddy," 74, of Edgewood Drive died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro with Dr. Sydnor Thompson III and the Rev. Frank McKenzie officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Horton was born in Wilkes County, Feb. 9, 1927, to Jonathan Palmer Horton Sr. and Elizabeth Lumpkin Horton. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of North Wilkesboro. He was also a member of the men's Bible class. Mr. Horton was a graduate of North Wilkesboro High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from the School of Pharmacy in December 1951 and returned to Wilkesboro to operate People's Drug Store until his retirement 1988. Mr. Horton served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II. He was involved in the North Wilkesboro Kiwanis Club, North Wilkesboro Elks Lodge, a charter member of Wilkesboro Moose Lodge, and a member of the VFW Post 1142. Mr. Horton served the community as town commissioner of Wilkesboro. He also served on the board of directors for B.R.O.C., ADAP, Northwestern Bank and Wilkes Community College Endowment. He served as "Santa Claus" for numerous organizations. Mr. Horton was often involved with helping many Wilkes County citizens both financially and spiritually. He was known throughout Western North Carolina as remembering the date of birth of many citizens to whom he sent hundreds of birthday cards. Mr. Horton was preceded by death by a son, Jonathan Palmer Horton III. Mr. Horton is survived by his wife of 49 years, Ruth C. Horton, of the home; a daughter, Elizabeth Horton Williams, of Wilkesboro; a son, Donald Richard Horton, of Raleigh; and eight grandchildren, Jamie, Natalie and Matthew Williams and Rebecca, Meredith, Jonathan, Rachel and Victoria Horton. The family will receive at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro from 6:30 to 8:30 Wednesday night. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Faith Addition Building Fund, P.O. Box 1145, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

HUNDLEY

LEXINGTON - Ashley Renee Hundley, 15, of Ashmoor Lane died Monday morning, Dec. 3, 2001, of injuries received in an auto accident. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Pinedale Christian Church in Winston-Salem with the Rev. Bill McKinzie officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Memorial Park. She was born Jan. 7, 1986, in Defiance, Ohio, to Timothy Lee Hundley and Vickie Lynn Hammack Hundley. She was a 10th grade student at Sheets Memorial Christian School. She was a member of Pinedale Christian Church where she was a member of the Youth Ministries. She was an avid Dale Earnhardt Jr. race fan and adored her 3-year-old sister and loved to spend weekends driving with her older sister. Surviving are her parents, Timothy Lee Hundley and Vickie Lynn Hammack Hundley, of the home; her grandparents, Jean Hundley, of Houston, W.Va., and Shirley and Russell Hammack of East Bank, W.Va.; and her sisters, Andrea Hundley and Kaitlyn Hundley of the home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel and other times at the home.

LAKE

Mrs. Nellie Kinard Lake, 83, of 1008 Cloister Drive passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at her residence. She was a native of Newberry County, S.C., born April 12, 1918, the daughter of the late Childs and Janie Ruff Kinard. She resided in Detroit, Mich., for 30 years, returned to Newberry and lived in Winston-Salem for the past two years. She was of the Baptist faith and was retired from Parke Davis Pharmaceuticals in Detroit. She is survived by a devoted niece, Janie Senn (Johnny); two nephews, Herbert Sligh (Betty), all of Winston-Salem and Michael Kinard of Detroit; a brother, Roy Kinard (Lillie) of Detroit; caregivers Alenia T. Sligh and Magaline Lindsay; and other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, 2001, at the Werts cemetery, Newberry, S.C. (Russell)

McNULTY

Mr. Thomas Paul McNulty Jr., 87, of Winston-Salem, died Monday at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Parklawn Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Stuart Zimmerman. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Mr. McNulty was born May 26, 1914, in Forsyth County, the son of Thomas P. and Ruth Peddycord McNulty. He served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II as a tank gunner in Company B., 31st Tank Battalion, in Northern France, Germany, the Ardennes and Central Europe. Mr. McNulty retired from the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of service and was a member of Fries Memorial Moravian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Lucille Timmons McNulty. Surviving is a daughter, Tommy Lee McNulty, of Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel and request that any memorials be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 251 N. Main St., Winston-Salem, NC 27102; or to Fries Memorial Moravian Church, 251 N. Hawthorne Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

MURRAY

RURAL HALL - Mr. Arlis Murray Jr., 69, known to family and friends as "Boss," of 7930 McGee Road, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Forsyth County and was a faithful member of the Red Bank Baptist Church, where he served on the Usher Board, was a member of Sunday School Adult Class No. 1. He was formerly employed with Dancy Construction and C.P. Robinson Construction Co. He is survived by a son, Arlis Murray III, of Fayetteville; a daughter, Deborah Clyburn (the Rev. James) of Winston-Salem; five grandchildren, Janet Campbell (Duone), Arlisia Murray, James Clyburn Jr. (Jondrea), Arlis Murray IV and Jovanah Graham; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Jean Douthit, of Winston-Salem; a daughter-in-law, Telma Murray; three brothers-in-law, James Peterson (Mary), Jerry Peterson and Clifton Peterson; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Conrad and Carolyn Williams (Michael); a devoted cousin, Doris Conrad; and many other relatives and friends. Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at the Red Bank Baptist Church with the Rev. Preston Fulp officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. SUMMERFIELD - Mozelle Shelton Overby, 91, of 8133 Mabe Marshall Road died Dec. 3, 2001, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital, Greensboro. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Brown Wesleyan Church in Gibsonville conducted by the Rev. Larry Pope. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park. A native of Stokes County, Mrs. Overby was born Aug. 8, 1910, to John Franklin Shelton and Rosa Bell Spencer Shelton. She was a member of Brown Wesleyan Church in Gibsonville and was retired from Made Rite Sandwich Co. and had worked part-time at K&W Cafeteria. Mrs. Overby was a resident of Gatway Plaza for 15 years. Otis C. Overby, her husband, preceded her in death, as did 12 brothers and sisters. Surviving are two daughters, Monette Durham and husband, Matt, of Summerfield and Rita Lederer and husband, James, of Lakeland, Fla.; two sons, James S. Overby and wife, Martha, of Greensboro and John M. Overby and wife, Carol, of Asheboro; a sister, Estelle Peeples, of Clemmons; grandchildren Rita Castle, Renee Cates, Rick Durham, Dr. Jim Lederer Jr., Patty Roberts, 1st Sgt. Bill Lederer, Gregg Lederer, Stephanie Routh, Spc. 4 Michael Overby and Zachary Overby; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Lambeth-Troxler Funeral Service and other times at the home of Monette and Matt Durham, 8133 Mabe Marshall Road, Summerfield. PROUTY

LEXINGTON - Mr. Stephen "Steve" Earl Prouty, 55, of Enterprise Road died at 7:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland, Miss., with the Rev. Ed Griffin officiating. Burial will be in Natchez-Trace Memorial Park in Ridgeland. He was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Jackson, Hinds County, Miss., the son of Austin Stephen Prouty and Florence Coker Prouty. He was retired but previously worked with Graylyn International Conference Center. Prior to this, he worked as a printer for Mississippi DOT and Bill's Institutional Commissary. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Welcome. He was a former member of Old Town Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. For more than 20 years he was a member of First Baptist Church of Ridgeland, where he served as a deacon. Also, he was a charter member of Ridgeland Lions Club and was past vice president. He was preceded in death by his father, who died in 1993. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Smith Prouty, of the home; and his mother, Florence Coker Prouty, of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Wright & Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland. Davidson Funeral Home-Hickory Tree Chapel is serving the family. RICE

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Mary Louise Rice, 49, passed away quietly at her home Sunday morning, Dec. 2, 2001. She was born the daughter of the late Jack and Sis Davis of Winston-Salem. Mary Louise was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and cherished her relationship with God and her family. She was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School and attended Stratford College in Danville, Va., was very active as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader and spent most of her time working on her talents with arts and crafts. Her life was devoted to taking care of her family and spending time with her closest friends, "The Porks." She is survived by her loving husband, Frank Rice; and daughter Victoria Rice, both of the home; a son, Trey Rice; and brother, Bo Davis, both of Winston-Salem; and a sister, Adelaide Davis of West Palm Beach, Fla. A memorial service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. The family will receive visitors one hour before the service at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held immediately after the memorial service.

RIFE

Mrs. Dorothy Grubbs Rife, 72, of 5424 Helen Ave., died Sunday while visiting family in Maryland. She was born in Winston-Salem on Nov. 18, 1929, to William Curtis Grubbs and Esther Thomason Grubbs. Mrs. Rife lived in Maryland for 40 years and managed several restaurants in the Baltimore area. She had moved back to Winston-Salem 14 years ago. She was a member of Marshall Baptist Church. Preceding Mrs. Rife in death were her first husband, William C. Smitherman, and her second husband, John W. Rife. Surviving are her son, William C. Smither-man and wife Joyce of Pinnacle; a stepson, Ned Rife and wife Cindy of Street, Md.; three grand-children, Gary Rife and wife Paula of Centerville, Md., Dana Rife of Florida and Scott Jester of Winston-Salem; and five great-grandchildren. The family is grateful to Gary and Paula for their devoted care during Mrs. Rife's recent illness. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Marshall Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Ryland Rock. There will be no formal visitation, but friends may pay their respects after noon Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.
