ROONEY

CLEMMONS - Mr. Arthur Paul Rooney passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 11, 1915, in Valhalla, N.Y., to the late James and Margaret McEntee Rooney. Mr. Rooney was a devoted husband and beloved father and grandfather. He served in World War II and was a retired attorney. Mr. Rooney is survived by his wife, Justine G. Rooney; five daughters, J. Maureen Conley of Clemmons, J. Paula Hyre of Bridgeport, W.Va., Kimbernie S. Westmoreland of Palm Harbor, Fla., Robin Gastineau of Pipersville, Pa., and Kelly Hobbs of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; two sons, Jeff B. Rooney and James D. Rooney, both of Clemmons; two sisters, Martha Chaleski and Helen Moran, both of New York; a brother, James Rooney, of Florida; and 17 grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church conducted by Father Michael Buttner. A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel with visitation to follow. Burial will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Holy Family Catholic Church of Clemmons in his memory.

ROYALS

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Aldine Edwards Royals of Arbor Acres, Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001. Mrs. Royals was born Sept. 7, 1920, in High Point, a daughter of Luther Eugene and Effie Ward Edwards. She worked several years in retail stores and was a homemaker. She was a member of Spray United Methodist Church in Eden. On March 8, 1942, she married the Rev. Worth B. Edwards, who died in 1969. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Rosanne Royals Martin, of High Point; sons Steve Royals and wife, Gloria, of Eden, Randall Royals and wife, Virginia, of Burlington and Brent Royals of Greensboro; a brother, Forrest Edwards, of High Point; eight grandchildren, Stephanie Almon, Todd Royals, Adam Royals, Mary Beth Maxwell, Scott Royals, Gabrielle Martin, Adrienne Martin and Connor Royals; four great-grandchildren, Matthew Royals, Blake Royals and Bryce and Austin Maxwell. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Sechrest Chapel, East Lexington Avenue, by the Rev. Patricia Chaput. Burial will be in Oakwood City cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 237 Idol St., High Point, NC 27262; or the charity of one's choice. Sechrest Funeral Service, East Lexington Avenue, is serving the family.

SEAGRAVES

Mr. Robert Lee Seagraves Jr., 79, of Winston-Salem died at Forsyth Medical Center on Dec. 4, 2001, after suffering a heart attack five weeks ago. Robert was born in Bloomfield, Neb., Jan. 23, 1922, to the late Robert Lee and Cora Vipperman Seagraves. He was a member of South Fork Baptist Church and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 30 years of service. Surviving are his wife, Edna Stone Seagraves, of the home; two daughters, Donna Campbell and husband, Dwain, of Wallburg and Vickie Lawrence of Clemmons; three grandsons, John Campbell, Brandon Campbell and Joshua Lawrence; and several cousins. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Michael Pope officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. STANLEY

SUPPLY - Mr. Henry Todd Stanley, 38, of Bacon Bluff Road, passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001. Mr. Stanley was born Feb. 14, 1963, in Surry County to Henry Lee and Willie Mae Welborn Stanley. Mr. Stanley was a salesman with Naber Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, Jeep, Eagle and was a member of Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville. Mr. Stanley was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Henry Ford and Bessie York Stanley; and his maternal grandfather, Willie Edward Welborn. Survivors include a special cat, Itty Bitty-the Maine coon; his mother and father, Henry and Willie Mae Stanley of State Road; a brother and sister-in-law, Matthew Edward and Bree Stanley of Boiling Springs, S.C.; two sisters, Tamera Stanley and Lonnie Nielson of Mount Pleasant, S.C. and Melissa Jill Stanley of Hickory; maternal grandmother, Elsie Welborn; aunts and uncles, Johnny and Phyllis Welborn and Hazel and Don Cochrane; nieces and nephews, Brian Stanley, Joshua Stanley, Ashlyn Stanley, Weston Darfler, Anna Darfler, Karen Nielson, Kelli Nielson and Patrick Kallnin; and a friend, Barbara Cidzidlo of Holden Beach. A private memorial service was held Nov. 28, 2001. The family requests that memorials be made to the Humane Society of Concord & Greater Cabarrus County, P.O. Box 3104, Concord, NC 28025. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of the arrangements.

STRICKLAND

Mr. Hugh Gehringer Strickler, 78, of 3154 Bonhurst Drive died at his home Monday afternoon following a lengthy illness. He was born in Raleigh Dec. 25, 1922, the son of George Bennett Strickland and Martha Gehringer Strickland. Mr. Strickland graduated from High Point High School and then served with the Navy during World War II as an aviation ordnance man first class and was an instructor with Patrol Bombing Squadron 199. He was the founder of Hugh G. Strickland Inc. and was president emeritus at the time of his death. Mr. Strickland was a member of First Baptist Church, Winston-Salem. He was a former member of the Twin City Lions Club, and a former member of the Forsyth Lions Club, of which he was a past president. He had served as chairman of the local board of directors of First Citizens Bank. He had also served as chairman of the board of directors of the Children's Center of the Physically Handicapped. Mr. Strickland was a former member of the local chapter of the Construction Specifications Institution and was a past president. He formerly served on the board of Carolinas AGC and had been president of the Wake Forest Sportsman's Club. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Clara Brown "Tup" Strickland, of the home; three sons, Gary H. Strickland, of Winston-Salem, Thomas S. Strickland, of the Murdoch Center, Butner, and Ross D. Strickland and wife, Barbara, of Mooresville; five grandsons, David, Michael, Scott, Bryan and wife, Lori, Kevin and wife, Kenda, all Stricklands; a great-grandson, Lewis Bryan Strickland; a sister, Mary Alice "Stoni" Johnson of Greensboro; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at First Baptist Church with Dr. David Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel. Memorials may be made to the Murdoch Center, Beacon Cottage Van Fund, 1600 C. St., Butner, NC 27509.

BANKS

MOUNT AIRY - The Rev. Ralph David Banks Sr., 69, of 138 Banks Valley Lane, widower of Mrs. Alma Jean Shelton Banks, died at the Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem on Monday, Nov. 26, 2001. Mr. Banks was born Sept. 30, 1932, in Woodfin to the late Roy Hamilton and Edith Boone Banks. He was pastor of the Level Cross Christian Center and was willing to help anyone. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Darlene and Isaac Sprinkle of Mount Airy; four sons and daughters-in-law, Ralph David and Cathy Banks Jr., Robert Daniel and Teresa Banks and Roy A. and Doris Banks, all of Mount Airy, Ronnie U. and Michelle Banks of Dobson; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Banks of Burnsville. In addition to his wife and parents, the Rev. Banks was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Trevor Chase Banks; and a sister, Eleanor Banks Tipton. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy conducted by Pastor Randall Smith. Burial will follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 Tuesday night at the funeral home where his body will remain until the hour of the funeral service.

BUCKNER

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Margie Walker Buckner, 77, of Winston-Salem passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Springwood Care Center of Forsyth. She was born March 20, 1924, in Forsyth County to Simon P. and Bertha Nezat Walker. Mrs. Buckner was a graduate of Mocksville High School and was a member of Northwest Baptist Church in Winston-Salem. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward D. Buckner, and three sisters, Ethel, Helen and Evelyn. Surviving are her daughter, Teresa Buckner Hire of Clemmons; four sisters, Dorothy W. Spainhour of Col-umbia, S.C., Elsie W. Robertson of Advance and Agnes Rector and Norma Lee Orrell of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Melvin Leroy Walker of Winston-Salem and Wilson Wesley Walker of Pfaff-town; several nieces and nephews; and brothers and sisters-in-law. A funeral service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Randy McKinney officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. DILLON

Mrs. Gladys Mae Bennett Dillon, 89, a resident of The Oaks at Forsyth, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Nov. 17, 1912, in Tobaccoville to Lee and Ida Kreeger Bennett. Mrs. Dillon was a member of Morris Chapel United Methodist Church in Walkertown and was retired from Western Electric. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Helsabeck Dillon; her son, Ken Dillon; stepdaughters Mamie Idol and Ruby Seivers; brothers Worth Bennett and Astor Bennett; and sisters Nonnie Fulp and Elzo Cole. Survivors include a son, Charles Ray Dillon and wife Judy of Clemmons; stepson Raymond H. Dillon and wife Helen of Walkertown; stepdaughter Myrtle Murrow of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; a great-grand-daughter; brother Henry L. Bennett of Walkertown; and sister Madeline Peacock of Walkertown. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Morris Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Reece Cook. FARMER

Mr. H. Leroy Farmer, 69, of Winston-Salem died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born May 10, 1932, in Forsyth County to the late James Patterson and Ada Vandalia Knight Farmer. Mr. Farmer was a member of New Friendship Baptist Church and was retired from Hanes Dye and Finishing Co. He is survived by his wife, Mary Edwards Farmer of the home; a son, Jamie Farmer and wife Candy of Charlotte; two daughters, Luann F. Phelps and husband Bobby of Winston-Salem and Jodi F. Burton and husband Greg of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; a brother, Belmont Farmer and wife Viola of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Bertha Tuttle and husband Marvin of Walkertown and Ruth Duggins of King. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hay-worth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Chris Byrne. MACEMORE

JONESVILLE - Clemmie Iona Macemore, 89, of Fox Knob Road passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Elkin Health Care Center. She was born June 19, 1912, in Yadkin County to the late E.D. and Nancy Euie Haynes Macemore. Ms. Macemore was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. Preceding her in death, were her great-granddaughter, Keisha Macemore; two sisters, Dinie Vestal and Verlie Macemore; and a brother, the Rev. Clay Macemore. Surviving are her son, Oland (Lorene) Macemore of Jonesville; three grandchildren, Mark (Glenda) Macemore, Roxane Eades and LuRae (Charles) Cass; five great-grandchildren, Bridgett Mace-more, Hannah Eades, Abby Layell and Gray and Bethany Cass; a sister, Maude Carlton of Yadkin-ville; three nieces; and three nephews. Her funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wed-nesday at Fall Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Hudson, the Rev. Everette Carter and the Rev. Eddie Macemore. She will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Little Mountain Road, Jonesville. McCLELLAN

Mrs. Lottie L. McClellan, 78, formerly of 2769 Piedmont Circle, passed away Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center after a period of illness. She was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System. Mrs. McClellan was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny McClellan. She is survived by her son, Herbert L. McClellan Sr. of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Kamellia L. McClellan and Herbert L. McClellan Jr. of Newport News, Va.; a brother-in-law, Joe McClellan of Winston-Salem; and a devoted cousin, Ella (Leon) Stewart of Winston-Salem. Funeral services for Mrs. McClellan will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, in the chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home, with Pastor Donald Stowe Sr. officiating. Her family will meet with friends from 12:30 until the funeral hour Wednesday. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. (Clark S. Brown & Sons)

McCORMACK

Mr. Bernie Joe "B.J." McCormack, 28, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born July 21, 1973, in Jasper, Ala., to Peyton McCormack Jr. and Mary Ellen Blankenship. Mr. McCormack graduated from North Forsyth High School and attended Piedmont Bible College. He was a member of North Point Baptist Church and was a lead person for the Industry for the Blind. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Peyton Sr. and Bernice H. McCormack. He is survived by his mother, Mary Ellen Blankenship and her fiance Wayne Vernon of Pfafftown; his father, Peyton "Pete" McCormack and wife Kathy of Jasper, Ala.; a stepsister, Laura Self of Jasper; a niece, Lauren Stewart; a nephew, Nicholas Stewart; maternal grandparents Thirman and Betty Harris; an aunt, Jan Smith and husband Bob; and a special cousin, Shannon Smith. A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with the Rev. Skip Furrow and the Rev. Christopher Woods officiating. The family will receive friends one hour after the service. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens in Beckley, W.Va.

NIFONG

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Marie Beshears Nifong, 73, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born Jan. 21, 1928, in Forsyth County to Coy Edgar and Viola Welch Beshears. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, P.M. "Pete" Nifong of the home; two daughters, Teresa Baldwin and husband Steve of Clemmons and Cheryl Miller and husband Robert of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Heather Miller and April Baldwin; two brothers, Rex Beshears of Winston-Salem and Bill Beshears of Lexington; and three sisters, Pauline Pike and Frances Landreth, both of Clemmons, and Angela Francis of Dallas, Texas. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons, with Dr. Mike Duffield officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel in Advance. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Wins-ton-Salem, NC 27103.

ROBERTSON

HIGH POINT - The Rev. Dr. James Robertson Jr., also known as "Grit," Jimmy and Junior, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after two weeks in the hospital. The Rev. Robertson was born in High Point, a son of James Robertson Sr. and Josephine Gooden Robertson, who both preceded him in death. He graduated from William Penn High School, class of '48, and attended Virginia Union Univer-sity in Richmond, Va., Livingstone College in Salisbury and Hood Theological Seminary in Salis-bury. He was awarded a honorary doctor of divinity degree from Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, S.C. Dr. Robertson served the following churches: the Mount Airy Chestnut Circuit, Mount Gilead, Troy Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church and Wadesville A.M.E. Zion Church, Wadesville, St. Philip A.M.E. Zion Church, Greensboro, where a new facility was built during his pastorate of 20 years. At the time of his death, he was presiding elder of the Greensboro district. Surviving relatives include his wife, Mrs. Cleo McPherson Robertson of the home; three sons, Reginald Robertson and Roderick Robertson, both of the home, and attorney Randall Robertson and wife Ernestine; and a grand-daughter, Taylor McPherson Robertson, all of Bowie, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Daisy R. LeGrande of High Point; a nephew, James Edward LeGrande of High Point; a grandniece, Tierra LeGrande; and an aunt, Mrs. Henrietta Singleton of Ridgeway, S.C. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wed-nesday at St. Stephen AME Zion Church by Bishop Cecil Bishop and the Rev. Mary Kendall. Entombment will follow at Guilford Memorial Park. Family visitation will be at the church at 10 a.m. Wednesday and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Piedmont Inc., 1801 Westchester Drive, High Point, NC 27262. Haizlip Funeral Home is in charge of arrange-ments.

SKEEN

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Vera Alice McBride Skeen, 88, of 304 W. Parkway died Nov. 26, 2001. Mrs. Skeen was born March 22, 1913, in Patrick County, Va. She had lived most of her life in High Point and was retired from Slane Hosiery Mill. She was a member of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Skeen was first married to Harry Pierce, who preceded her in death. She later married Britt Skeen, who also preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Joan P. Throckmorton and husband Lindsay of Winston-Salem; two sons, Michael D. Pierce and wife Anna of High Point and Roger Skeen and wife Sandy of Greenwood, S.C.; a sister, Amelia Wilson of Carolina Beach; two brothers, Kabel McBride, and Dempsey McBride; four grandchildren, Mark Pierce, Traci Petree, Conley Skeen and Gary Throckmorton; and six great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Floral Garden Park cemetery in High Point by the Rev. Dr. William A. Slater. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Cumby Family Funeral Service in High Point.

SMITH

LEXINGTON - Mr. Sterling Lee Smith, 72, of Feezor Road died Sunday, Nov. 26, 2001, at 9:47 p.m. at Lexington Memorial Hospital after a sudden illness. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Steve Lindsley. Burial will follow in Jersey Baptist Church cemetery. He was born Oct. 12, 1929, in Winston-Salem to Grady Lee Smith and Annis Feezor Smith. He spent his early childhood in Davidson County and returned in 1997 to retire on the Feezor Farm. Mr. Smith was the driving force behind the development of the South Carolina Higher Education Tuition Grants program and retired as executive vice president of the South Carolina Independent College Association. From a modest $5,000 a year beginning as a scholarship fund for students attending private colleges, Smith led the expansion of the program until more that $18 million a year was made available for scholarships, which were received by about 80,000 students. Upon his retirement, Gov. David Beasley presented Mr. Smith with the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina's highest civilian award. The S.C. Financial Aide Association selected him as Man of the Year in 1997. Mr. Smith was also involved in government relation's work for a number of other clients. He represented The Tobacco Institute, General Foods Corp., R.J. Reynolds and the Personal Watercraft Association. He was a graduate of the city schools of Winston-Salem and received his B.A. from Duke University. At Duke he participated in baseball and football, and was sports editor of the Duke newspaper and the campus radio station. Mr. Smith later attended graduate school at Wake Forest University and served in the U.S. Army where he was editor of the Fort Jackson, S.C., newspaper. He was a member of the Sapona Country Club, The Summit Club, the American Legion. He was a member of Saint Luke United Methodist Church in Hartsville, S.C. Mr. Smith was an avid golfer. Surviving are spouse, Mary Bickett Smith of the home; daughters Karen Smith Sparrow of Zebulon and Susan Musser of Columbia, S.C.; a stepson, Greg Bickett of Columbia, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Jamie Plachy of Asheville; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Davidson Funeral Home and other times at the home on Feezor Road in Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sterling L. Smith Scholarship Fund, c/o Foundation Scholarship Program, P.O. Box 1465, Taylors, SC 29687.
