STEVENS

Mr. Odell Martin Stevens, 75, passed away Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, at his home following a lengthy illness. Mr. Stevens was born in Patrick County, Va., to John Elmer and Sadie Martin Stevens on Sept. 27, 1926. Mr. Stevens was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church in Lewisville. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. after 36 years of service. Mr. Stevens was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Stevens. He is survived by several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Sherry Poindexter. A 2 p.m. graveside service will be held Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Shiloh Lutheran Church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shiloh Lutheran Church.

SUTPHIN

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Ray Sutphin, 61, passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at Presbyterian Hospital. Mr. Sutphin was born April 1, 1940, in Surry County to the late Herbert and Maggie Cheney Sutphin Daniels, and married to Mrs. Patsey Simmons Sutphin for 41 years. Mr. Sutphin was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Charlotte, a graduate of Mount Airy High School and, before becoming disabled, he was the assistant vice president for sales and operations of the North Carolina and South Carolina region for Pilot Freight Carriers. Throughout his life and even through his enormous medical difficulties, he touched many other lives through his positive spirit, humor, generosity, and genuine caring for others. Survivors include his wife, Patsey Simmons Sutphin; brother Herbert Sutphin of California; sisters Margaret Tuttle of King, Fay Skidmore of Charlotte and Pauline Thompson of California; and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. A prayer service and celebration of Mr. Sutphin's life, was held Monday, Nov. 26, 2001, in the Raymer Funeral Chapel. Interment will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Indian Grove cemetery in Mount Airy. Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 200 W. Trade St., Charlotte, NC, 28202; or the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 36507, Charlotte, NC 28236. Raymer Funeral Home of Huntersville is handling the arrangements for Mr. Sutphin.

TAYLOR

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. James Boyd "Jimmy" Taylor, 64, of Stigall Road passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at his home. Mr. Taylor was born in Forsyth County, a son of the late Lenora Stigall and Alvin Taylor. Mr. Taylor was a retiree of Roadway Express and had owned Colonel Taylor's Auctioneer Service for 38 years. He was a past commander and life member of the Oscar Joyner VFW Post No. 5352 and was a member of the Kernersville Moose Lodge No. 2181. Surviving are his wife, Pearl Coble Taylor of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Kim Taylor of Kernersville; a sister, Jean Taylor; two brothers, Melvin Taylor and wife Alma and Gray Taylor, all of Kernersville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home Chapel, with Chaplain A.G. Parker officiating. Burial will follow in the Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be directed to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston Salem, NC 27103.

TESH

ADVANCE - Mr. Keller Wayne Tesh, 63, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born April 2, 1938, in Forsyth County to Oscar Keller and Maggie Lala Bullins Tesh. Mr. Tesh retired in 1990 from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He enjoyed golfing and hunting but most of all just loved being with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Linda McClamrock Tesh of the home; two daughters, Sheila Hasenstab and husband Bob of Summerville, S.C., and Tracy Tesh of Wilmington; three grandchil-dren, Max, Gabrielle and Tori (affectionately known to them as "Bubba"); his mother, Maggie Tesh of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Peggy Dull and husband Frank of Kernersville, Kay Haas and husband Bob of Winston-Salem and Joan Meadows and husband Eddie of Clemmons; his very special K-9 companion, Missy; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jo and Charlie McClamrock; five nephews; six nieces; and a very special uncle, Clyde Tesh. Other survivors are his special neigh-bors, Betty and Hal Davis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Woodie and Janet Bates and Jean and Leonard Shelton; and very special friends, Patti and Daniel Zimmerman. A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel (108 Kinderton Way) in Advance. The family will receive friends after the service. The entombment will be a private service in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

TRANSOU

ELKIN - Mrs. Deon Lowery Transou, 82, of 818 Apt. A, W. Main St., passed away Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center in Elkin. Mrs. Transou was born in Iredell County to Robert Lee Lowery and Lucinda Ann Baity Lowery on Dec. 17, 1918. She was the widow of Walter Transou. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; six sisters; four brothers; and three nephews. Deon had no living children of her own but was known far and wide as everyone's "Momma D." She is survived by three nieces, Louesta L. Henry of Fort Mill, S.C., Ollive Burgess of Mocksville and Joan L. Burton of Winston-Salem; six nephews, Gilbert Lowery of Cary, Thomas Murray of Winston-Salem, Charles Mastin of Mocksville, Robert Wendell Lowery of Jonesville and Jimmy Dean Lowery and J.B. Lowery of Mocksville; and numerous great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001, at Johnson Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Flowers or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, or a charity of the donor's choice.

VOGLER

GRAHAM - Mrs. Lucy "Peggy" McArn Vogler, 65, of 4947 S. N.C. 87 died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2001, at 12:30 p.m. at Moses Cone Hospital following a short illness. Mrs. Vogler was a native of Charlotte, former Miss Charlotte in 1953, and retired from Bell Laboratories. She was affectionately known as "Granny." Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Sabrina Darlene Vogler of Graham; sons, Mr. Gary L. (Karen) Vogler of Graham and Mr. Albert Harrison "Happy" (Cheryl) Vogler II of Elon; brothers Mr. Roy Lee McArn and Mr. Robert M. McArn Sr. of Charlotte; a sister, Mrs. Barbara Anne Laney of Fort Mill, S.C.; grandchildren Robert M. Lynch, Meghan Brittainy Barrett, Tristan Scott Vogler, Justin Christopher Barrett and Albert Harrison "Buck" Vogler III; and a beloved dog, Savannah. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. William Thomas McArn Sr. and Mrs. Lela Helms McArn; her husband, Mr. Albert Harrison Vogler; a brother, Mr. William T. McArn Jr.; and a sister, Ms. Dorothy Mae Gibson. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001, at McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park in the mausoleum. The Rev. Rick Webster and the Rev. Wesley Price will officiate. The family will receive friends from 12 to 2 p.m. at McClure Funeral Home in Graham. Donations may be made in Lucy Vogler's name to a charity of the donor's choice.

WALKER

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Charles Reed Walker, 72, died Thursday, Nov. 22, 2001, at East Pasco Medical Center in Zephyrhills, Fla. Mr. Walker was born Nov. 22, 1929, in Martinsville, Va., a son of the late Stoney and Nanie Byrd Walker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, attended Gospel Light Baptist Church and was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. Surviving are three daughters, Debbie Walker of Clemmons, Mary Tullock of Walkertown and Jackie Walker of Martinsville, Va.; two sons, Jimmy Walker of Lexington, and James Walker; two sisters, Molly and Dolly; two brothers, Brewster and George; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 28 at Woodland cemetery by the Rev. L.C. Taylor. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home.

WHISENHUNT

Mrs. Viola Keaton Whisenhunt, 74, of Patria Street in Winston-Salem passed away Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a lengthy illness. She was born April 26, 1927, in Davie County to the late Thomas T. and Josie Barneycastle Keaton. Mrs. Whisenhunt was married to the late John Lee Whisenhunt and lived most of her life in Forsyth County, where she was a homemaker. She was a member of Bethel Church of the Living God. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. Patsy (Bill) Thomas and Ms. Magdaline Whisenhunt, both of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Wanda (Ray) Bourne and Mrs. Doris (Tony) Banks, both of Westfield, and Mrs. Carol (Roy) Lafferty of Lexington; a son, Michael L. Whisenhunt (Theresa) of Lexington; eight grandchildren, three stepgrandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Sam Keaton of Lexington; and two sisters, Annie Ruth Wishon of Lexington, and Addie Mae Robbins of Mocksville. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by Pastor Tom Shelton. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery. BOWEN

Mrs. Mabel Douglas Bowen, 109, formerly of 462 Lockland Ave., died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Salemtowne. She was born Dec. 23, 1891, in Yadkin County, daughter of the late Thomas S. and Fannie Wilson Douglas. Mrs. Bowen was a lifelong member of First Christian Church and a graduate of Salem College, Class of 1912. She graduated as valedictorian of her class and could recite most of the valedictory address she gave at graduation. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jesse Gray Bowen Sr.; a son, Jesse G. Bowen Jr.; two daughters, Sophia Bowen Clay and Peggy Bowen Leight; a son-in-law, George Staples Leight Sr.; a grandson, William Bowen Leight; three brothers, Albert N. Douglas, G. Wilson Douglas and Thomas S. Douglas. Surviving are a daughter, Sara Bowen Gibbs and husband Dr. Stuart W. Gibbs of Gastonia; a daughter-in-law, Marion Davis Bowen of Winston-Salem; a son-in-law, David Clay and wife Ann of Salisbury; grandsons Dr. George Staples and wife Pam Leight Staples of Durham, Stuart Wynn Gibbs Jr. and wife Cindy of Greenville, S.C., Douglas Bowen and wife Pam of Winston-Salem, Gray Bowen and wife Renee of Dallas, Texas, and William Derek Leight of Chapel Hill; granddaughters Dr. Melanie Anne Leight of Charlottesville, Va., Kristin Louise Leight of Boston, Mass., Ann Blatzer and husband Bruce of Columbus, Ohio, Gail Parker and husband Dr. Byron Parker of Laurens, S.C., Penny Shields and husband Paul of Sanford, Nancy Davis Bowen of Greensboro, Mary Bowen Wood and husband Charles of Asheville, Colin Walker and husband Ray of Atlanta, Ga., Julia Newsom and husband Edward of Atlanta, Dr. Louise Clay of Florence, S.C., and Ginny Young and husband Robin of Greensboro; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at First Christian Church with the Rev. James Cobb officiating. CLINARD

Mr. Allan Roy Clinard, 64 of Winston-Salem was the beloved and faithful husband of Sandra Hudspeth Clinard. He died peacefully at Forsyth Medical Center on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. He was born to Roy Winfred and Dessie Morris Clinard on Oct. 12, 1937, in Guilford County. Allan was a career long-distance truck driver, whose handle was "Gunsmoke," and traveled many miles across the Eastern Seaboard. From his many travels, Allan made lifelong friends who will remember him for his quiet manners, hard work and friendly smile. He was awarded several safe-driving awards throughout his long career. His parents; a daughter, Emily Clinard; and a sister, Catherine Brendle preceded him in death. Allan is survived by his loving spouse, Sandra; two daughters, Cindy Kicklighter and her husband Bob of Charleston, S.C., and Jan Clinard of Winston-Salem; and three sons, David Neal of Davidson County, Stephen Clinard and his wife Jeanne of Kitty Hawk and Jonathan Clinard of Winston-Salem. Allan was a warm and loving grandfather, "Papaw," to Phillip and Adam Clinard, David Powell, Robby Kicklighter and Sarah and James Clinard. Also surviving are three brothers, Paul Clinard of Greensboro, Nolan Clinard of Cleveland, Ga., and Lowell Clinard of High Point; a sister, Kay Pruitt of Union Grove; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. His faithful four-legged "children" also survive Allan. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Vogler & Son's Reynolda Road Chapel. The Rev. Todd Brock will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 Saturday evening. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, Triad, 202 CentrePort Drive, Greensboro, NC 27409; or the charity of the donor's choice. COOK

WESTFIELD - Mrs. Olene Arrington Cook, 80, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. She was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Surry County to Roy and Mattie Cook Arrington. Mrs. Cook was a mill worker at Lynn Hoisery Mills and a member of Woodville Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sue and Elmo Galyean of Rural Hall; a granddaughter, Tammie Lewis of Charlotte; two great-grandchildren, Stephanie Nyseth and Jantzen Lewis; and a sister and brother-in-law, Ola and Bernie Tilley of Rural Hall. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Simmons cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Trent Jessup. The family will receive friends at Cox-Needham Funeral Home on Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001, from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Simmons cemetery Fund c/o Lester Simmons, 107 Della Lane, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041, or the charity of one's choice. The family is being served by Cox-Needham Funeral Home, Pilot Mountain.

DOUB

TOBACCOVILLE - Mrs. Hazel Louise Ketner Doub, 79, of 4840 Spainhour Mill Road, passed away Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after one month of declining health. She was born in Winston-Salem on Jan. 19, 1922, to Amanda and George Ketner. She was a graduate of Lewisville High School and a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. She was married to Gilbert S. Doub on Sept. 6, 1941, and they celebrated their 60th anniversary this year. She was a homemaker and a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Clete and Tom Ketner (Winston-Salem); and two sisters, Mildred Lovette (Durham) and Adelaide Mart (Miami, Fla.). She is survived by her husband, Gilbert S. Doub of the home; three children, Sandra (Terry) Shore, Judy (Jay) Trivette and Wesley (Deborah) Doub, all of Tobaccoville; seven grandchildren; twin great-granddaughters; a brother, George (Nita) Ketner Jr. of Durham; and many friends including "The Gang". A memorial service will he held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Spaulding, the Rev. Dwight Cartner and the Rev. Jim Newsom Jr. officiating. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church immediately after the service. The family wishes to express its appreciation to Dr. Gonzales and Dr. Barrett and their staffs, and the staff of Forsyth Medical Center for their kind and compassionate care given to our mother. FREEMAN

JONESVILLE - Mrs. Verlie Marie Luffman Freeman, 75, of 218-B Briarwood Lane, passed away Thursday evening Nov. 29, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital in Elkin. Mrs. Freeman was born Dec. 13, 1925, in Forsyth County to the late James Bradford and Mamie Jeanette Love Luffman. She was retired from the Brendle's offices in Elkin, and was a member of Calvary Wesleyan Church in Elkin. Preceding her in death were her husband of 57 years Clarence Eli Freeman Sr. on April 4, 1999; a son, Clarence Eli Freeman Jr.; and two brothers, Earl and Murl Luffman. Surviving are three children, James (Barbara) Freeman and Cynthia Allred, all of Jonesville and Bradford Lee Freeman of North Wilkesboro; six grandchildren, Rebecca (Mack) Marquis, Lisa Marie (Burton) Hawks, James Allred, Victoria (J.C.) Galyean, Laura Allred and Christopher Freeman; her stepmother, Bretta Luffman of Elkin; five great-grandchildren; four sisters, Ruby Wagoner of Elkin, Vadie (Arlon) Money of Yadkinville, Hazel (Garvey) Cook of Jonesville and Pansy (Mack) Byrd of Ronda; and two brothers J.B. (Bennie) Luffman of Ronda and David (Peggy) Luffman of Ft. Myers, Fla. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday Dec. 2, 2001, at Arlington First Baptist Church by the Rev. Flake Mason and the Rev. Jonah Parker. Mrs. Freeman will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday Dec. 1, at Gentry Family Funeral Service, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville.

GRAY

KERNERSVILLE -Mr. David Darnell Gray, 49, of 9101 County Line Road died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Moses Cone Hospital. Mr. Gray was born in Forsyth County, a son of Russell and Iris Darnell Gray, and was an employee of United Parcel Service with over 20 years service. Mr. Gray was a devoted husband, father and son and was always ready to help anyone in need, he was a U.S. Army veteran, a member of the Colfax Baptist Church and attended the Kernersville Moravian Church. He devoted much of his time to children with special needs, always there to assist on field trips and fishing trips. He attended GTCC and was an avid computer enthusiast. Surviving are his wife, Mary "Maggie" Stone Gray of the home; three daughters, Mollie Gray and Heather Gray of the home and Chantelle Doyle of Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minn.; a grandson, Caleb Doyle; his mother, Iris Darnell Gray of Colfax; a sister, Julie Dawes of Stokesdale; and a brother, Brian Gray of Colfax. A memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Kernersville Moravian Church by the Rev. Don Winters and the Rev. Edward Gray. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hayworth Miller Cain Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Association of Retarded Citizens of Greensboro, 826 N. JENKINS

THOMASVILLE - The Rev. Eugene Lassiter Jenkins, 68, a resident of 7167 Tree Hollow Road, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born Feb. 25, 1933, in Guilford County, the son of William R. Jenkins and Eunice Lassiter Jenkins. He had been a resident of this area all his life. He was a member of the Church of the Living God. He was a past youth leader and minister with Church of the Living God. He was an inactive bishop and youth director with Church of the Living God Conference. He was a wonderful father, husband and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a granddaughter, Emily Lauren Jenkins. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Mrs. Berta Freeman Jenkins of the home; children and grandchildren, David and Annette (Chatham) Jenkins and Taylor and Gracie of Trinity, Danny and Pam (Jenkins) Graham and Daniel and Spencer of High Point, Joe and Jeanene (Jenkins), Fitzgerald and Zane of Lexington, Lloyd and Faith (Jenkins) and Wilson of Trinity; a sister, Betty (Jenkins) and John Owen of High Point; a brother, William Robert Jenkins Jr. of High Point; and many beloved family members and friends. Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Full Armor Christian Center in High Point with the Rev. Danny Graham, the Rev. Randy Ingram, the Rev. Stanley Savage and the Rev. Steve Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Emily Lauren Jenkins Scholarship Fund, c/o Bank of North Carolina, P.O. Box 1148, Thomasville, NC 27360. The Rev. Jenkins will remain at the funeral home until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service.

JOYNER

KING - Ms. Delores M. Joyner, 64, of Scenic View Rest Home died Friday, Nov. 23, 2001. She lived all her life in Forsyth County. She is survived by a son, Cleo Joyner of Charlotte; an uncle, Henry (Willa Mae) Joyner of Cleveland, Ohio; a devoted cousin, Delphine James; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, 2001. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Leonard Lewis Sr. presiding. The family will leave from the home of Thelma Hunter, 951 Hunter New Hope Lane. Beasley's Funeral Service is in charge of services.

LAKEY

BOONVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth Parks Lakey, 90, passed away Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit of Winston-Salem. Born in Wilkes County on Sept. 11, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Arthur and Joan Shore Parks. She was retired from Chatham Manufacturing Co. in Elkin. She was of the Baptist faith, and a beautiful Christian lady. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey B. Lakey; a sister, Mrs. John (Ethel) Pardue; and four brothers, Pervis Parks, Wade Parks, Raymond Parks and Nathan A. (Boyd) Parks. Surviving are her sons, Ed (June) Lakey of Boonville, Fred (Frankie) Lakey of East Bend and Harold (Janet) Lakey of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren, Laddin (Melissa) Lakey of Boonville, Heather (Rusty) McArthur of Yadkinville, Amber (Mark) Rader of Richmond, Va. Dean (Jill) Lakey of Richmond, Va., seven great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Beulah (Barney) Eaton of Winston-Salem. Survivors also include several close and loved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Funeral services are scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Gentry Family Funeral Chapel in Yadkinville. Interment will follow in the Boonville cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Saturday evening at the Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. Flowers will be accepted or Memorials may be made to the Nursing Center at Oak Summit, "Building Account Fund for Residents," 5680 Windy Hill Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family would like to thank the staff and residents of Oak Summit for their friendship, love and support shown to "Granny Lakey" and the family throughout the time she called Oak Summit "Home".
