LAWSON

KING - Vivian Robertson Lawson, 89, of East Dalton Road, died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001. She was born Sept. 30, 1912, in Stokes County to Gabriel Franklin and Eva Kate Robertson Lawson. Vivian was an employee in the cafeteria at King High School when it was first opened and later worked as a buyer and salesperson for Ideal Dry Goods in Winston-Salem. She was a member of First Baptist Church in King for more than 75 years and had kept the nursery there for 40 years. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, JoAnn L. Bennett in 1990. Surviving are four sisters, Eunice L. Angle and Rachel L. Johnson, both of the home, Thelma L. (Mallard) Alley of Walnut Cove, and Ruby L. Bowles of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Woodrow F. Lawson of King and Eugene M. (Charleen) Lawson of Mooresville; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, at First Baptist Church in King with Dr. John Wren and Dr. Carl Childs officiating. Burial will follow in King Memorial Park. The family will receive friends this evening from 7 to 9 at Slate Funeral Home in King. Vivian had requested that flowers be omitted and any memorials be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church in King, P.O. Box 481, King, NC 27021.

MORTON

Mr. Tommie Winston Morton, 1921-2001, died peacefully Nov. 29, 2001, at his home on Brookwood Drive. He was born in Scranton, Texas, the son of the Rev. and Mrs. W. Bascom Morton. He committed his life to Christ early in life and was a faithful member of Maple Springs United Methodist Church for more than 50 years, serving the church in many capacities. Tom served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-46 on active duty and nine more years in the Naval Reserve. He was a graduate of Emory and Henry College and spent one year in Harvard Graduate School of Business. He worked for Piedmont Airlines for 37 years and retired in 1984 as senior vice president of finance. After his retirement, he enjoyed farming in Ashe County and had a booth at the Farmers Market for several years. These were happy years for him. He is survived by his wife, Betty; three sons, James Morton and wife Carol, and David Morton and wife Rebecca, all of Charlotte, and Dr. Gerald Morton of Montgomery, Ala.; and four grandchildren, Alan Morton, Jamie M. Kopish, Katherine Morton and Kimberly Adams. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren, Hayley Kopish, Megan and Kelsey Adams; and his two brothers, Glen Morton of Raleigh and Weldon Morton of Houston, Texas. Tom was loyal to his God, to his country, and to his employer. His loyalty and devotion to his family have been our strength and we dearly love him. A graveside service will be held at 12 noon Saturday, Dec. 1, at Helton United Methodist Church cemetery in Ashe County. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Maple Springs United Methodist Church with Dr. Randolph P. Waugh officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Morton Ministerial Scholarship Fund, Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA 24327; the Capital Fund, Maple Springs United Methodist Church, 2569 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106; or any charity of the donor's choice.

REED

MARTINSVILLE, Va. - Mrs. Doris Jane "Janie" Gregory Reed, 102, of Kings Grant Retirement Community died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Memorial Hospital-Martinsville. She was born Dec. 21, 1898, in Nelson County, Va., to John Lunsford Gregory Sr. and Minnie Loving Gregory. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Martinsville, a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women and past member of the American Legion Women's Auxiliary. Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Edward Reed; a son, E. Nelson Reed; a grandson, Stephen B. Reed; two sisters, Angie Gregory and Norma G. Price; and a brother, John L. Gregory Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. David M. "Kitty" Tally of Winston-Salem; three sons, Charles Edward Reed Jr. of Martinsville, Alfred Gregory Reed of Lynchburg, Va., and Jan Curtis Reed of Collinsville, Va.; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, at First United Methodist Church of Martinsville with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m., one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of her son, Jan Reed, 293 Susan Drive, Collinsville, Va. SCHOOLER

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. Elvis Dean Schooler, 80, of Lakeview Road died Friday morning at Forsyth Medical Center after a short illness. A private graveside service will be held Monday in Rose cemetery with Dr. Van Lankford officiating. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home on Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. They request memorials be considered for the Mocksville Elementary School Library, in the memory of Elizabeth Schooler, 295 cemetery St., Mocksville, NC 27028. Mr. Schooler was born in Hamilton County, Texas, on March 13, 1921, to the late William Henry and Reecie Florence Sayles Schooler and was a public accountant in Long Beach, Calif., for 38 years before moving to Mocksville in November 1990 when he retired. He was a member of the B.P.O. Elks Lodge No.888 in Long Beach. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Elizabeth Schooler; a sister, Allie Jo. S. Roye; and a brother, Leo Schooler. Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Genalee Henderson Schooler; two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard Dean Schooler and wife Gaye of Mocksville and Stephen Douglas Schooler and wife Jenni of Cypress, Calif.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Bill Schooler of O'Donnell, Texas.

SHEPHERD

Miss Isabel Anderson Shepherd, 86, of 840 N. Jackson Ave., was born Sept. 16, 1915, in Laurens, S.C., to the late Asbury and Nancy Shepherd. She was a member of Zion Tabernacle Fire Baptized Holiness Church, 425 Buick St., where she was a gold star member with over 70 years of service, having the distinction of being the longest living member. Her church endeavors until her health began to decline included service on the senior choir, treasurer, trustee board, deaconess board, and communion board as well as service in other church capacities. In the community Miss Shepherd was a former member of the community flower club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. Miss Shepherd departed this life Thursday evening, Nov. 29, 2001, at the Winston-Salem Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center following an extended period of illness. She leaves to cherish loving memories four devoted nieces reared in the home, Sue (Sam) Porter, Brenda (Hamzat) Ogunlade, April Thomas and Rachel Jackson, all of Winston-Salem; special nieces, Mary King, Louise Davis, Nancy (Joe) Imes, all of Washington, D.C. and Maybelle Lawyer of Spartanburg, S.C.; nephews L.C. Simpson, Jessie B. Sampson, Butch (Nancy) Sampson and Charles Sampson, all of Spartanburg, S.C.; great-nephews the Rev. Sam (Valerie) Stewart, Stan Porter and Sam Porter Jr.; great-grandnieces Nicole, Melissa and Alyssa Porter and Valecia and Sameka Stewart of Anderson, S.C.; great-grandnephews Shawn and Kevin Porter, Joseph Miller and Jeremy Stewart of Anderson, S.C.; a great-great-niece, Rayonna Jackson; two great-great-nephews, Brandon Thomas and Iziah Porter; cousins Bessie Lamaupin of Winston-Salem and Grace Allgood of, Detroit, Mich.; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted today at 2 p.m. at the Hooper Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Lydia Davis officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service hour (1:30 to 2 p.m.) at the funeral home. The funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence at 1:15 p.m. today. (Hooper)

SWAIM

HAMPTONVILLE - Mrs. Mae Bernice Poplin Swaim, 86, died Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Swaim was born Sept. 30, 1915, in Wilkes County to Tom and Eula Cockerham Poplin. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Mrs. Swaim was a homemaker and a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer Pearson Swaim; and a son, Homer Cloys Swaim. Surviving are two daughters, Mildred Caudle and Geraldine Coe Dickerson, both of Hamptonville; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Grady Poplin of Elkin and Ivan Poplin of Jonesville; and a sister, Lucille Pardue of Lexington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, at Mount View Baptist Church by the Rev. Tim Tucker and the Rev. Randy Johnson. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 4517 Little Mountain Road, Jonesville, and at all other times at 4737 Brown Road, Hamptonville.

TELFORD

MERIDEN, Conn. - Mrs. Jeannine B. Telford, 68, of 181 Metacomet Drive, wife of Walter J. Telford died Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at MidState Medical Center after a brief illness. Born in Meriden Nov. 19, 1933, the daughter of the late Albert and Solange (Girard) Breton, she was a lifelong Meriden resident and attended schools in Meriden and Canada. Mrs. Telford was a retired employee of the State of Connecticut. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church. She was a devoted mother of four and loving grandmother of 10. In addition to her husband, Walter, she is survived by a daughter, Mary Post of Cromwell; three sons and daughters-in-law, W. Kurt and Betty Telford of Clemmons, N.C., Alan and Christine Telford of Granite Bay, Calif. and Glenn and Carol Telford of Wallingford, Conn.; a sister, Sister Yolanda Breton of Springfield, Mass.; a brother, the Rev. Raymond Breton of Oakland, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Real Breton of Fair Haven, Mass. The funeral will be held at 9:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 E. Main St., Meriden and at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart cemetery. WEAVIL

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Clarese Beeson Weavil, 69, went to be with the Lord, Friday, Nov. 30, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital. Mrs. Weavil was born Oct. 9, 1932, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Joseph Curtis and Lola Smith Beeson. She was a member of Oak View Baptist Church in High Point. She was retired from Wesleyan Arms Retirement Home and volunteered there after her retirement. She was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Curtis Beeson; and a brother, Broadway Smith Beeson. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Dawn Weavil of Kernersville; a daughter and son-in-law Carla and Ronnie Mackie of High Point; two sisters, Nancy Whicker of Kernersville and Bonnie Craver and husband Joe of Winston-Salem; her mother, Lola Smith Beeson of Kernersville; a brother, Hugh Beeson and his wife Shirley of Kingston, Tenn.; and five grandchildren, Jason Weavil, Nicole Weavil, Kristin Hiatt, Stacy Mackie and Tina Mackie. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home Chapel in Kernersville by the Rev. Steve Smith and the Rev. Larry Whicker. ATKINS

ARARAT - Mr. Calvin Ray Atkins, 77, of 439 Little Mountain Church Road, husband of Gracie Marion Atkins, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy. Mr. Atkins was born in Surry County on June 5, 1924, to the late William Oliver and Zitar Watson Atkins. Mr. Atkins was retired from Bassett Furniture and was a retired farmer and carpenter. He was an active member of the Eldora Ruritan Club and was a member of the Piney Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Gracie Marion Atkins of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Sam Marion of Pinnacle; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Frances Atkins, and Tim and Tracy Atkins, all of Ararat; six grandchildren and spouses, Brian and Sonya Marion, Cindy Marion, Tommy Marion, all of Pinnacle, Gina Atkins, and Mindy and Tim Chilton, all of Ararat, and Brooke Vogler of Greensboro; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Marion of Pinnacle; a sister, Violet Butner of Sanford; a stepsister, Ruby Sechrist of Pilot Mountain; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Greer and Faye Atkins of Mount Airy, and Lavern and Marie Atkins of Ararat. In addition to his parents, Mr. Atkins was preceded in death by a great-grandson, Cole Marion; three sisters, Beulah Jones, Ila Faye Atkins, and Anna La Atkins; and two brothers, Claude Atkins and Wade Atkins. The funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Piney Grove Baptist Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Kermit Gray and the Rev. Billy Watson, and burial will follow in the Little Mountain Baptist Church cemetery. The family received friends on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Home of Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church to lie in state 30 minutes before the funeral service.

BLACKBURN

ELKIN - Mrs. Luna Cheek Blackburn, 76, of Lyles Street passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. Mrs. Blackburn was born Sept. 28, 1925, in Wilkes County to Wesley and Annice Jolly Cheek. Mrs. Blackburn retired from Brendle's and was a member of Elkin First Baptist Church and the Rebecca Sunday School Class. Mrs. Blackburn was also a consultant for Mary Kay Cosmetics and a member of the VFW auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Mickey Dean Blackburn; and a granddaughter, Mikki Faith Blackburn. Survivors include a son, Graham Blackburn of Morganton; a grandson, Michael Blackburn of Jonesville; three brothers, Quincy Cheek and Leo Cheek, both of Roaring River, Ken Cheek of Bermuda Run; three sisters, Leta Kilby of North Wilkesboro, Peda Martin of Havlock, and Frankie Boyer of Kernersville. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Elkin First Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Johnson. Burial will follow at Pleasant Home Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Blackburn will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. HIGH POINT - Mr. Roger Tracy Byrd, 37, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville.

CHAMBERS

Mrs. Anne F. Chambers, 85, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. She was born Feb. 2, 1916, in Winston-Salem to Thomas Clarke and Carrie Lawrence Fields. She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Chambers; and her son, Rusty Chambers. Anne is survived by her daughter, Carol, of Washington, D.C.; and many family members and friends. She was a loving wife, mother, and friend. Her kindness, elegance, and loving heart will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Salem cemetery by Chaplain Fred Moretz. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel. MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Lovit Edward "Ed" Fore, 77, of 1223 Fairlane Drive, husband of Verla Stevens Fore, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Elkin Healthcare Center in Elkin. Mr. Fore was born March 1, 1924, in Lee County, son of the late Lovit Evander and Prilla Gilbert Fore. Mr. Fore was a retired HVAC technician from Pike Electric Inc., a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, and a member of Cedar Lane Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Verla Stevens Fore of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Jerry Hatcher, and Kathy and Tim Flippen, all of Mount Airy; four sons and three daughters-in-law; Gary Wayne Fore of the home, Donald Lee and Linda Fore, Jerry Edward and Shirley Fore, all of Mount Airy, and Teddy Gray and Debbie Fore of Elkin; nine grandchildren, Michelle Kirkman, Macy Cook, Kevin Fore, Candie Fore, Carrie Fore, Ashley Flippen, Diana Flippen, Billy Fore, and Jamie Fore; two great grandchildren, Betsy Kirkman and Samantha Cook; two sisters, Wilma Cameron of Sanford, and Naomi Hawley of Lillington; a brother, Howard Fore of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; and a half brother, Ralph Fore of California. The funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy. The service will be conducted by the Rev. R.L. McDaniel and the Rev. Junior Easter, with burial to follow in Oakdale cemetery. The family received friends on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy. Flowers will be accepted.

Mrs. Betty Jane Williams Hodges, 66, of 766 Ivy Yokely Road died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Cabarrus County to Leonard Knox and Alma Arlene Osbourne Williams. Mrs. Hodges was preceded in death by her sister, Juanona Myers. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Charlie Howard Hodges of the home; three sons, Michael Anthony Hodges and wife Debbie of Clemmons, Randy Howard Hodges and wife Janice of Walburg, Jeffry Leonard Hodges and wife Diana of East Bend; a sister, Mary Imogene Dameron of North Wilkesboro; a brother, Billy Marvin Williams and wife Gertie of Bryson City; grandsons, Jason Hodges, Adrian Hodges, Jeffry Hodges Jr, Greg Burcham, and Daniel Burcham; granddaughters, Stephanie Benson and husband Gary Wayne, and Heather Lewis and husband Jim; and a great-grandson, James Bailey Lewis. Graveside services will be Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Brother Danny Hauser will officiate. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family extends special thanks to nurses and staff of Forsyth Intensive Care Unit.

LARSEN

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Dr. George Earl Larsen, 80, of 1515 Hilldale Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, in Washington Regional Hospital in Fayetteville, Ark. Husband of Elizabeth Blackmun Larsen, he was born Oct. 11, 1921, in Centuria, Wis. His parents were George and Hannah. Dr. Larsen graduated from the University of Wisconsin a bachelor of science and master's degree in Biochemistry. He graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich., with a Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1952. He taught Medical School at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center from 1955 until 1985. He and his wife retired in Arkansas in 1985. He was a member of the Utilitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fayetteville. Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Blackmun Larsen of the home; a brother, Tom Larsen and his wife, Jane of Menominee, Wis.; two sons, Scott Larsen and wife, Sherry of Winston-Salem, and Rex Larsen of Norman, Okla.; two daughters, Gail Larsen Cuevas and husband, Gary of San Ramon, Calif., and Wendy Larsen Murphy and husband, Dr. Don Murphy of Wenatchee, Wash.; eight grandchildren, Julie Larsen of N.C. State University, Raleigh, Britt Elizabeth Larsen of University of Wilmington, Wilmington, Erik Larsen, Alex Larsen, and Brandon Larsen of, Norman, Okla., Katy Murphy, Lisa Murphy, and Jessica Murphy of Wenatchee, Wash. Dr. Larsen was a wonderful grandfather. There will be a Memorial Service at The Utilitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fayetteville at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that any memorials be made to The Utilitarian Universalist Fellowship of Fayetteville, 901 W. Cleveland St., Fayetteville, AR 72701.

PARKS

Mrs. Ozella Booker Parks, of 1442 Shadymount Ave. passed on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born in Winston-Salem to the late William Parks and Janie Booker. She was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. at Whitaker Park for 511/2 years. She graduated from the local school system and attended New Zion Baptist Church, where she was a dedicated and devoted member. At New Zion, Mrs. Parks was a member of the Senior Choir, Deaconess Board, Missionary Circle and the Sunday School Department. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman J. Parks; Ernest J. Riley Jr., and Gladys Riley Lytle. During her lifetime, she nourished and raised the following loving and devoted nieces and nephews as if they were her own children and grandchildren, Mrs. Caroline Moody of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Patricia Terry of the home, Mrs. Pricilla Moody of Lake Ellsinore, Calif., Miss Chandra R. Riley of Durham, and Mr. Ernest J. Riley III of Winston-Salem. She also leaves to cherish her loving memories, a special loving and devoted daughter-in-law, Ms. Martha Riley of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Mr. James Parks of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Novella Bradley of Washington, D.C.; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and many, many friends. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at 3 p.m. from the New Zion Baptist Church, where the Rev. Isaac Carter will officiate. Interment will follow in the family plot at Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service from 2:30 to 3 p.m. at the church and other times at the residence from where the funeral cortege will assemble and leave.
