ROBERTSON

CLEMMONS - Mrs. Ada Leona Leftwich Robertson, loving mother, grandmother, great- and great-great-grandmother, formally of Gus Hill Road, passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at The Oaks at Forsyth. She was born May 16, 1911, in Carroll County, Va., to Riley Monroe and Julia Catherine Hodges Leftwich. She attended Union Grove Baptist Church. Mrs. Robertson was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis M. Robertson; two sons, Therman and Elwood Robertson; a granddaughter, Robin Spear; and a great-great-granddaughter, Jody Spear; four sisters; and three brothers. She is survived by three daughters, Wilma Sizemore and husband, MacDaniel of Lexington, Norma Spear and husband, Thomas of King, Betty Hartman and husband, Harold of Winston-Salem; two sons, Jimmy Robertson and wife, Edith, Harold Robertson and wife, Pat, all of Lexington; two sisters, Ethel Scott of Winston-Salem, and Eva Parks of Independence, Va. Also surviving are 22 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family sends a special Thanks to the staff of The Oaks at Forsyth, station 3, especially to Gary and Judith. A Funeral service will be Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Hayworth-Miller Chapel with Dr. Harold Fletcher and the Rev. Kenny Harris officiating. Burial will be in Ivy Green Baptist Church cemetery in Mount Airy. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. SHELTON

PINNACLE - Mrs. Estella Eaton Shelton, 95, of Pinnacle, the widow of Terry A. Shelton, passed away Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was born Feb. 22, 1906, in Stokes County to Walter Lee and Minnie Edwards Eaton. Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker and a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church. She is survived by her nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Olive Grove Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Carl Childs and the Rev. Howard Tucker. The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Olive Grove Baptist Church cemetery. Memorials may be in floral tribute or to Olive Grove Baptist Church, c/o Barbara White, Marshall Smith Road, King, NC 27021. SMALL

GREENSBORO - Wilma Abee Small went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Dec. 10, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel. Wilma was born to Daniel Abee and Stella Pearl Powell Abee on Dec. 2, 1927, in Winston-Salem. Upon graduation from Reynolds High School, she attended Draughon Business College. She worked for Western Electric from 1947 to 1955 and after marrying, stayed at home to raise her children. Most recently she worked at Camco Manufacturing Co. in Greensboro. Wilma had a special love for deaf people and learned sign language so that she and her late husband, Gerald M. Small, would be able to help with Sunday school class for the deaf at First Baptist Church in Greensboro. The class was renamed the Gerald M. Small Class after his death in 1965, and Wilma remained active in the class for 30 more years. The members always had a special place in their hearts. Wilma always had a ready smile, a strong faith in God and a love for people. Those cherishing her memory are her four children, Yvonne Small McKnight and her husband Keith, Glenda Ann Small, Gerald Matthew Small Jr. and wife Shannon, and David Ray Small and his wife Kathi; sisters Mahautta Hartsoe, and Joann Cockerham; a brother, Lloyd Abee and wife Jean; grandsons Matthew, Daniel and Stephen McKnight, Boston Small and Jonathan Small; her deaf friends at church and in the community; friends from the Faith Sunday school class; her dear friends, Beverly Downs, Ola Widener and Louise Howle; her co-workers at Camco; and many other relatives and friends. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry North Elm Street Chapel. TILLEY

CLEMMONS - Mr. Billey Sunday Tilley, 78, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Surry County to Lloyd and Ettie Rogers Tilley. Mr. Tilley was a dedicated member of Westfield Baptist Church for 28 years and Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem for 23 years. He was owner and operator of Tilley Hardware and Supermarket in Westfield. He also was the owner of B&P Motors in Clemmons. Mr. Tilley was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Fulton and Doris Slate; and two brothers, Cabol Tilley and Dick Tilley. Surviving are his wife, Pauline S. Tilley of the home; a son, Dr. Mark Tilley and wife Rochelle of Asheville; a daughter, Kathy Hammons and husband Steve of Lewisville; four grandchildren, Joshua Tilley, Lindsey Tilley, Lauren Saliga and Mikey Saliga; and five brothers, John Tilley of Stuart, Va., Kenneth Tilley of Pensacola, Fla., Jack Tilley of Mars Hill and Swanson Tilley and Frank Tilley, both of Westfield. BOWLES

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Ina T. Bowles, 77, of McClamrock Road died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Clyde Phillips and the Rev. Aaron Carter officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Interment will be in Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at Eaton Funeral Home on Friday from 7 until 9 p.m. They request that memorials be considered for Oak Grove United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 1984 U.S. 158, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Bowles was born Aug. 28, 1924, in Davie County to the late Jacob Tutterow and Mary Comer Tutterow Smith, and she was a homemaker. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a faithful church worker and a member of Hope Baptist Church. She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and life's many qualities. Survivors include her husband, Lester M. Bowles of the home; three children, Ed (Sandy) Bowles of Salisbury, Bill (Cheryl) Bowles and Kay (Robert) Caudle, all of Mocksville; four grandchildren, Alan Bowles, Andy (Melissa) Bowles, Amy (Mark) Nichols and Kevin (Natalie) Caudle; two great-grandchildren, Wesley Bowles and Tyler Nichols; two sisters, Ruth Tutterow of Greensboro and Mary Catherine Parker of Mississippi; two brothers, the Rev. CARR

COLFAX - Deborah M. Carr, 48, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at the Hospice & Palliative CareCenter in Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the KIingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Kernersville on U.S. 421. Deborah was born Dec. 3, 1953, in Washington, D.C. She was a professional portrait artist who studied at the Ringling School of Art in Sarasota, Fla. She also was a student of the prestigious Daniel Greene School for Portraiture Art in Salem, N.Y., and a member of the Portrait Society of America. She will be remembered as a faithful wife, loving mother, sister, daughter and a loyal friend. Deborah is survived by her husband of 28 years, Bill; a son, Jason Carr; two daughters, Beth Faulkner and her husband, Shane, and Amy Carr. She is also survived by her parents, Clifford and Dunnie Marland of Jacksonville, N.C.; and also two brothers, Ronald Marland of Virginia, and Gary Marland of Maryland. DODSON

GERMANTON - Elder William S. Dodson, 83, died Wednesday at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Elder Dodson was born March 18, 1918, in Stokes County to the late Frank and Mary Tucker Dodson. He was a retired supervisor with Thomasville Industries. Elder Dodson was a member of Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church. He served as moderator of Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church, Flat Shoals Primitive Baptist Church and Cedar Falls Primitive Baptist Church. After his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf very much. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lillie M. Dodson of the home; three daughters, Thelma and husband Richard Chappell of Winston-Salem, Mildred and husband Bill Prince of Germanton, Judy and husband Charlie Manley of Virginia; nine grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Clear Springs Primitive Baptist Church. Elder Jimmy Lankford, Elder J.H. Keaton, Elder Joey Jenkins will officiate. FUNDERBURK

HOUSTON, TEXAS - Mr. Frank Edward Funderburk, 55, formerly of Davidson County, died on Dec. 5, 2001, in Houston. He graduated from North Davidson High School and East Carolina University after which he joined the U.S. Army. After Officer Training School, he became a paratrooper and joined the Green Berets, attaining the rank of captain while serving in Vietnam, Okinawa and Cambodia. Among his medals are the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Air Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Parachutist Badge, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, the Vietnamese Service Medal with three Bronze Stars and the Republic of China Rough Terrain Parachutist Badge. While stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, he received his master's degree in business at American Technological University in Killeen. Later he co-founded and became the sole owner of Ram Rod Trucking Co. in Houston. He is survived by his parents, the Rev. Donald K. and Marian C. Funderburk of Winston-Salem; his wife, Rumi; two sons, Charles and wife April, and Lee; a daughter, Tina; and two grandchildren, all of Houston; and a sister, Rena F. Meredith of the Midway community in Davidson County. Funeral services will be held in Houston on Monday, Dec. 10, followed by burial in the Houston National cemetery with military honors. HAIRSTON

ARLINGTON, Va. - Harvard "Howard" E. Hairston, 69, a resident of Arlington, formerly of Walkertown, died unexpectedly at his residence of an apparent heart attack Friday, Nov. 30, 2001. Mr. Hairston was born in Forsyth County, a son of William Henry Hairston and Juanita Jones Hairston, who both preceded him in death. He graduated from Carver High School in Winston-Salem and attended Jefferson Junior College in Greensboro. He was an active member of Oak Grove Baptist Church during his residency in North Carolina. He served an enlistment in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean conflict, and was a retired employee of the U.S. Postal Service. On Oct. 10, 1980, Harvard was united in marriage to the former Julia Pannell. He became a caring and loving father of her four children, and became a special "Pop Pop" to their four grandchildren. He was a volunteer at the Alexandria chapter of the American Red Cross and involved in other charitable organizations. Surviving relatives include his wife, Julia P. Hairston of the home; two daughters, Mary (Miklos) Jessup and Dorothy (Alvin) Gillem; two sons, Michael F. Howard and Bryan J. Howard, all of Virginia; four grandchildren; four sisters, Mrs. Willie Mae Williams, and Mrs. Josephine (Henry Jr.) Williams, both of High Point, Mrs. Edna (James) Daniel of Virginia, and Ms. Hazel Hairston of Greensboro; four brothers, Dr. Lin (Evi) Hairston Sr. of Germany, Ruffin Hairston of High Point, David (Patricia) Hairston of Winston-Salem, and Larry (Sherrie) Hairston of Maryland; aunts, Mrs. Jessie Lee (Albert) Tatum, and Mrs. Lois Jones, all of Winston-Salem; an uncle, Harvard Jones of Washington, D.C.; and other relatives and friends. Funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. I.L. Anthony. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Family visita-tion will be at the church at noon Saturday and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Clay Williams Jr., 4017 Resthaven Road, and Mrs. Willie Mae Williams, 829 Skeet Club Road, High Point. HORTON

Mrs. Euna Marshall Horton, 84, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born July 27, 1917, in Hudson County, N.J., to Emmett Clyde and Elsie Baumgardner Marshall. Mrs. Horton was a member of Salem Baptist Church and for many years was active in the Grace Stevens Sunday-school class, was a member of DMA, worked for many years on the Winston-Salem Tobacco Market, owned and operated Horton Tax Service and retired in 1977, served seven years on the board of directors of the Gum Tree Volunteer Fire Department and the Volunteer Ladies Auxiliary. Her husband, Warren Hubert Horton, preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Margaret Driggers and husband Bill of Savannah, Ga.; two sons, Jim Heath and wife Linda of Clemmons and Marshall Horton and wife Susan of Arcadia; and six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson. A graveside ser-vice will be conducted at 11a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Parklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Floyd Boles. HYMES

LEWISVILLE - Mrs. Adeline McCullough Watts Hymes, 85, of 1055 Sequoia Drive passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Belton, S.C., to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Lewis McCullough, and lived the majority of her life in Winston-Salem. She was a faithful member of the Morning Star Baptist Church, where she was a deaconess until her health failed. She was married to the late John D. Watts. To that union, there were nine daughters and a son. She was later married to John Hymes, who preceded her in passing. A daughter, Velma W. Roseboro, also preceded her in passing. She leaves to cherish fond memories eight daughters, Margaret W. Ross, Blondelia W. Beard, Barbara W. Macon, Annie R.W. Smith-Jones, Betty W. Johnson (Willie J.), Ernestine W. Shelton, all of Winston-Salem, Jacqueline W. Adams (Richard) of Tuscalosa, Ala., and Cynthia D.W. Timmons (David) of Lewisville; a son, John D. Watts Jr. of Winston-Salem; 22 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; her mother-in-law, Ardie B. Watts; three sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law, all of Hartford, Conn.; and many other relatives and dear friends. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, from the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Donald Salley officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Murline Joyner Lee, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Lee was born in Nash County on Dec. 11, 1922, the youngest child of the late Lemon Littleton and Esther Pittman Joyner. She attended Main Street United Methodist Church and was a member of the Boyd Stafford Sunday school class. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hudson Lee. Surviving are her daughter, Marcia "Vickie" Miller and husband Mike of Winston-Salem; a son, John Hudson Lee and wife Anissa of Greensboro; three grandsons, Andrew Miller, Scott Miller and David Lee; a sister, Bessie Widenhouse of Raleigh; a brother, Elisha Thomas Joyner and wife Mickey of Rocky Mount; a brother-in-law, John P. Lee Jr. and wife Helen of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and many nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Main Street United Methodist Church. LIVENGOOD

YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Marlene Maria Livengood, 61, died Dec. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after surviving her battle with cancer for 11 years. Mrs. Livengood was born in the country of Equador on Oct. 5, 1940, to Jamie E. and Auraroa Piedrahita Leon. She was retired from Sara Lee, where she worked in quality control. Mrs. Livengood attended South Oak Ridge Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her mother, Auraroa. Mrs. Livengood is survived by her father, Jamie E. Leon of Winston-Salem; her husband, Eric Todd Livengood of the home; a daughter, Melissa Dehart Smith of Winston-Salem; a son, James Thomas Dehart Jr. and wife, Kimaly Ann of Winston-Salem; three grandsons, James Edward Joyce III, James Matthew Dehart and Joshua Colin Joyce, all of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Martha Medina of New York, Vickie Gordon of Sedge Garden and Elisa Dodson of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, Carlos Leon of New York, Ricky Leon of Florida and Jamie Leon Jr. of Florida; along with several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at 12:30 p.m. at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev Phil Beavers and Dr. Eugene Paschold officiating. McLEAN

Mrs. Dorothy Lewis McLean, 48, of 2200 Clearwater Court passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was a lifelong resident of Winston-Salem. Mrs. McLean was born Dec. 2, 1953, to Eugene and Mary Lewis. She attended local public schools, graduating from Parkland High School in 1972. She attended Winston-Salem State University where she earned a bachelor's degree in science in 1976. She began her teaching career the year she graduated from college. She taught health and physical education at North Forsyth High School for 25 years. During this time, she coached track, basket-ball, softball and volleyball. While still teaching school, she enrolled as a student at Gardner-Webb University, where she successfully earned a master's degree in arts of physical education in 1988. During the 1999-2000 academic school year she was elected "Teacher of the Year" at North Forsyth High School for her outstanding service to the teaching profession. Mrs. McLean was also a devoted and faithful member of the "Voices of Grace" Gospel Choir. At the time of her death, she was the president of the Gospel Choir. She loved to sing for the inmates at the Cherry Street Prison and she rarely missed an opportunity to sing. Mrs. McLean accepted Christ as her personal savior and devoted much of her later years to the ministry of music and doing outreach ministry. One of her favorite places to minister in song was at the Forsyth Village Nursing Home, where she would bring uplifting and inspirational gospel music to the residents. At times, she would even go alone to the Forsyth Village Nursing Home if she could not solicit volunteers. She was preceded in death by a brother, Reginald Lewis. Mrs. McLean is survived by her husband, Mr. Anthony E. McLean; a daughter, Tracy Nicole McLean; her parents, Eugene Lewis and Mary Lewis; four sisters, Jennifer Costen, Patricia (Charles) Rice, Yolanda Lewis and Lisa Glenn (Cedric), all of Winston-Salem; a devoted mother-in-law, Helen Smith of Sanford, N.C.; a loving sister-in-law, Cornelia L. McLean (Allen) of Sanford and a playmother, Vivienne Conley; a faithful playdaughter, Danita Roseboro; a loving aunt, Doris Thompson; a very supportive friend, Gloria Ingram and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Grace Presbyterian Church, where the Rev. Samuel Stevenson, D. Min., will officiate. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the funeral services from noon until 1 p.m. at Grace Presbyterian Church (corner of Carver School Road and Butter-field Drive). QUINLIVAN

Elva White Quinlivan: May 27, 1910 - Nov. 30, 2001. Elva W. Quinlivan passed away Nov. 30, at Springwood Care Nursing Center. A long-term employee of Southern Bell and Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, Mrs. Quinlivan is survived by sisters, Mrs. Geneva Smith of Asheville, Mrs. Virginia Badal of Sacramento, Calif., Mrs. Frances Griffin of Winston-Salem; a brother-in-law, Miller G. Griffin of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Paul F. King of Raleigh; and a niece, Mrs. Betty K. Martin of Dover, Del.; and numerous other nieces and nephews, all of whom regret her passing. A memorial service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Rural Hall Church of Christ. Minister Ron Voss will officiate. SHOOK

PFAFFTOWN - Mr. George H. Shook, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at his home. He was born July 18, 1928, in Forsyth County to Hubert and Zula Montgomery Shook. Mr. Shook had retired from AT&T after 37 years service and was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a member of Parkway Presbyterian Church and was preceded in death by his wife on Dec. 12, 1993, Ruby Tucker Shook. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Rory Lewellyn Sr. of Pilot Mountain; his mother of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Rory Gilbert Lewellyn Jr. and wife Tracy of Pilot Mountain, and Jason Alex Lewellyn and special friend Jodie Corns of Winston-Salem; a great-granddaughter, Abigail Lewellyn of League City, Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Cora Lee and Jerry Burke of Stokesdale; three brothers, Tom Shook of Raleigh, John Shook of Pfafftown, and Jimmy Shook and wife Teresa of Sanford. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Parkway Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Jonathan Freeman. Entombment will follow in Forsyth Memorial Park Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and at other times at the home of his mother. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brenner Children's Hospital, Medical Center Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27157.
