WALKER

Mr. John Marion Walker passed away Nov. 30, 2001, in Charlotte. He was born April 24, 1921, in Winston-Salem, the son of the late Oscar Walker Sr. and the late Carrie Torrence Walker. Mr. Walker spent his entire life in Winston-Salem. He was educated in the Winston-Salem public schools and attended N.C. A&T State University. He was a mess sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. After his Army service he came home and opened Walker's Tailors and Dry Cleaners, which he operated for more than 40 years. After retiring from his dry-cleaning business, he worked for Belk's Department Store as a tailor. John was married to Ruby Boone Walker for 48 years. She preceded him in death. He is survived by his daughter, Marion Louise Walker; a sister, Eloise W. Morton of Charlotte; a brother, James F. (Wilkin) Walker of Washington, D.C.; a sister-in-law, Susan C. Walker of Decatur, Ga.; two aunts, Marion Wallace of Winston-Salem, and Louise Hauser of Spring Valley, N.Y.; two nieces; two nephews; four great-nephews; and four great-nieces; and several very close cousins and loving friends. Funeral services will be held on at noon Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lawrence Cavanaugh officiating. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. WHITE

Mr. Denver Matthew White, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2001, at his home. He was born July 21, 1924, in Forsyth County to the late D.V. and Minnie Pope White. Mr. White founded the Denver White Oil Co. in February 1947 and operated it until March 1996, when his health began to decline. Mr. White was a humble and generous man who loved all people his entire life and demonstrated that by dedicating his life to helping, loving and giving to others. He felt blessed many times in return. He was a member of Hopewell Moravian Church. His wife, Sue Icenhour White, preceded him in death in May 1992. He is survived by two daughters, Teresa White, and Cherry W. Kiser and husband Ron, all of Winston-Salem; a son, Maurice "Mossy" White and wife Paula of Clemmons; two grandsons, Matthew White and wife Cherie, Steven White of Clemmons; a sister, Mildred White; a brother, Ivey White and wife Jewell, all of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Christine Icenhour Queen and husband Jack of Pfafftown, Joan Icenhour McCurry and husband Oscar of Valdese; four nephews; two nieces; and a godson, Jason Adams and wife Betsy of Lake Norman. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Hopewell Moravian Church by the Rev. Jeff Carter and the Rev. David Merritt. Entombment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. WITTEN

Lt. Col. Bernard Jerome Witten, born Aug. 2, 1950, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to the late Jesse Witten and Annette Scott Witten Thompson and raised lovingly by his stepfather, Willie E. Thompson of 2701 New Walkertown Road, departed this life Nov. 11, 2001, at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Springs, Md., from comp-lications of brain surgery. Lt. Col. Witten graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in 1968 and attended N.C. A&T State University. He received his bachelor's degree in international affairs in 1980 from Florida State University and his master's degree in administration from Central Michigan University in 1996. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in December 1974 and graduated from Officers Candidate School, Fort Benning, Ga., in 1977, where he was commissioned a second lieutenant. Lt. Col. Witten served in the U.S. Army for more than 26 years and served with honor in various capacities as an infantry officer and con-tract-management officer. His tours of duty included the Republic of Panama; Fort Jackson, S.C.; Fort Benning, Ga.; Los Angeles Air Force Base; Rock Island Arsenal, Ill.; Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; Fort Lee, Va.; Cairo, Egypt; and Fort Belvoir, Va. Honors received include the Meritorious Service Medal (third award), Army Com-mendation Medal (third award), Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon (second award), Expert Infantryman Badge, Parachutist Badge, Air Assault Badge and the Legion of Merit Award, awarded posthumously. He was a 1991 graduate of the Command and Staff General College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dorothy; four children, Maurice Jerome of Mecca Saudi Arabia, Marcus Jamahl, Michael Joseph, and Maya Juliette of the home; a daughter-in-law, Fatima Salaam; and two beautiful and precious granddaughters, Amirah Liyya and Aminnah Sara; his beloved mother, Annette S. Thompson; stepfather, Willie E. Thompson of Winston-Salem; a sister, Willette R. Thompson of Washington, D.C.; two half-brothers, Curtis of Colorado and Chase of Beckley, W.Va.; maternal uncles Harold Carter (Mary) and Ronald Carter (Gloria); grandmother Evelyn B. Carter of Winston-Salem; paternal aunts Geraldine Lewis, Ruth Boyd, Grace Graham, Evelyn Bonner of Dayton, Ohio, and Katie Green of Atlanta; paternal uncles James Witten of Cleveland, Ohio, and Edgar Witten of Detroit, Mich.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Services were held Tuesday Nov. 13, 2001, at the Dar Alhijah Mosque in Falls Church, Va., with burial at the George Washington cemetery (Islamic section) in Adelphi, Md. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Dec. 8, 2001, at Saints Home United Methodist Church, 1390 Thurmond St., Winston-Salem. The family visitation will follow immed-iately after the memorial service in the Sunday-school auditor-ium of Saints Home Church along with viewing of family photos. The Rev. John F. Epps will officiate. Lt. Col. Witten was a former member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church and later embraced the Islamic faith. Lt. Col. Witten was loved and admired by many, giving of himself to help others. He worked diligently with historically black colleges and the United Negro College Fund to ensure that African-American students would have an opportunity to receive quality education. He also worked with international refugee organiz-ations. He was a wonderful caring husband, father and son. He will TRULY be missed.

WOOTEN

ELKIN - Mrs. Lala White Wooten, 84, of Chatham Drive passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Wooten was born Nov. 7, 1917, in Surry County to James Vance and Bessie Caudle White. Mrs. Wooten was retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a graduate of Elkin High School and a member of Elkin Valley Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Jackie Weatherman. Survivors include her husband, Jesse Wooten of the home; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Joe Bill White, and J.V. and Lorene White, all of Elkin; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Reba and Leroy Hayes of Elkin, Hazel and Tommy Ball of Mooresville, Coleene Wall of Greensboro, Mrs. Empress Gentry of Elkin; two grandsons, Mark and Lane Weatherman of Sparta; three great-grandchildren, Adam Weatherman of Elkin, and two twin girls of Sparta. Funeral services will be held Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Johnny Blevins and the Rev. Clifford White. Burial will follow at Elkin Valley Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin or at other times at 447 Oakland Drive, Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Elkin Valley Baptist Church Building Fund. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is in charge of the arrangements.

BEESON

HOT SPRINGS VILLAGE, Ark. - Henry DeWitt Beeson, 81, died Nov. 21, 2001. Born Aug. 25, 1920, in Winston-Salem to DeWitt and Margie Willard Beeson, he had an industrial engineering degree from Georgia Tech and careers as a sales executive with Alcoa and with the Tennessee State Area Vocational-Technical Schools as instructor and area director. He had been an avid gardener and golfer and most recently, a member of the Village United Methodist church. Survivors include his wife, Nancy Cox Beeson of Hot Springs Village; a son, Mark Henry Beeson of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Amy Beeson Felgar, of Portsmouth, N.H.; three stepsons, Bill Wilkes of Memphis, Tenn., John Wilkes of Houston, Texas and Chuck Wilkes of San Antonio, Texas; two stepdaughters, Peggy Harper of Fayetteville, Ark. and Carol Quenzer of Kingwood, Texas; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. (CST) Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church in Crossville, Tenn. The family requests that memorials be made to the First United Methodist Church. Bilbrey Funeral Home Inc. in Crossville, Tenn. is in charge of the arrangements.

BOYD

EDEN - Mr. Charles Boyd, 54, of 1303 George St. died Dec. 9, 2991, at Morehead Memorial Hospital in Eden. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Springfield Baptist Church in Eden Gardens cemetery. He was a native of Chester, S.C., a member of Springfield Baptist Church and a former employee of Vintage Yarns. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Roberts Boyd of the home; a daughter, Delois Miller of Minneapolis; five stepdaughters Gloria Dalton, Judy Dalton and Jackie Brown, all of Mocksville, Cynthia Roberts and Katherine Tinsley of Eden; a brother, Jerry Boyd of Rock Hill, S.C.; three sisters, Brenda Page of Winston-Salem, Barbara J. Greene of Charlotte and Patsy McFadden of Washington, D.C.; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the church. BOYD

Emma Boyd, 71, of 940 N. Cleveland Ave., Apt. C, passed away Dec. 7, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Visita-tion will be 1:30 p.m. Friday and the funeral will begin at 2 p.m. at Rema Deliverance Ministries. Burial will follow at Evergreen cemetery. Survivors include sons, Reginald, Charles, Willie and Eric Boyd, all of Winston-Salem; grandchildren Charlene Barr, Reginald Boyd Jr., Reginald Boyd, Timothy Boyd, Brittany Boyd, Ashley Boyd, Taneal Boyd, Kimberly Boyd, Maggie Boyd, Alana Alston and Yasmeen Alston; eight great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will depart from the home of Charles Boyd, 2565 Wall-ingford Road, Winston-Salem. Professional services imp-le-mented by Beasley's Funeral Service.

COLLIER

Mrs. Florence D. Collier of Arbor Acres died Dec. 10, 2001, in the Fitzgerald Health Center. She was born Aug. 11, 1907, in Cannonsburg, Pa., the daughter of Willis O. and Nellie Linn Dunn. The family moved to Lakewood, Ohio, in 1924. Mrs. Collier graduated from Lakewood High School and Cleveland Business School. Before her marriage, she was a legal secretary. She married Earl S. Collier in 1932. The Colliers moved to Westchester County, N.Y., in 1942. In retirement, they moved to Southern Pines in 1969 and to Arbor Acres in 1986. Mrs. Collier was a devoted church member and served as president of the Women's Society of Christian Service in Asbury Methodist Church, Crestwood, N.Y. She lived her life with care and compassion for others. She enjoyed golf, reading, bridge, and made many friends wherever she lived. She is survived by her husband of 69 years; two sons and daughter-in-law, the Rev. Donald E. and Diane Collier of Peekskill, N.Y., and Glenn W. and Ann Collier of Springfield, Ohio; four grandchildren, Mrs. Linda Floren of Deerfield, Ill., Mrs. Donna Witts of St. Petersburg, Fla., Christopher E. Collier of Cincinnati and Katherine A. Collier of Indianapolis; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service is planned for 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at in the Fellowship Hall of Arbor Acres. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Senior Services Inc. CRAVER

CLEMMONS - Mr. Norman Ray Craver, 60, of Muddy Creek Road, Clemmons, and Seaford Road, Advance, died unexpectedly Mon-day, Dec. 10, 2001, at the new log home in Davie County where he had spent countless hours and where he had planned to enjoy the view of the river. Mr. Craver was born in Forsyth County on Nov. 22, 1941, to Ray J. and Eleanor Rochester Craver. He was retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., with 34 years of service. Mr. Craver was preceded in death by his father and his son, Martin Craver. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruby Yates Craver of the home; a son, Steven C. Craver and a daughter, Jill E. Craver, both of Clemmons. He was also a grandpaw to Brian and Shannon Craver of Clemmons. Also surviving are his mother of Covington, Ky., and a sister, Carolyn C. Wright (husband Creighton) of Covington, Ky. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Center United Methodist Church in Welcome, with the Rev. Clay Morgan, the Rev. Jim White and the Rev. Tony Brown officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel and other times at the home of Steve Craver, Muddy Creek Road. DAVIS

Mrs. Annie Bell Winfrey Davis, 90, formerly of 842 Efird St., Winston-Salem, died Dec. 11, 2001, at Meadowbrook Manor in Clem-mons. She was born in Stokes County on Dec. 2, 1911, to Crawford and Sallie Allen Knight. Mrs. Davis is survived by a son, Roger Winfrey and his wife, Donna, of Winston-Salem; a daughter, June Logan and her husband, Charles, of Kernersville; four grand-children, Shan Winfrey, Randy Winfrey, Michael Logan and Mitchell Logan; five great-grandchildren, Amanda Winfrey, Randi Winfrey, Anna Logan, Sarah Logan and Joshua Logan; and a sister, Ruth Tuttle and her husband, Buddy of Germanton. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, in the Mausoleum Chapel at Gardens of Memory cemetery in Walkertown, with the Rev. Frank Shumate officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

HELTON

Mrs. Eugenia "Jean" Blythe Helton, 83, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at her home. She was born April 2, 1918, to Neal and Verna Hawkins Blythe. Mrs. Helton was of the Presbyterian faith. She was employed with Montaldo's and retired from Belk Stores. Surviving are a daughter, Marilynn Hester of Winston-Salem; a son, James A. Helton Jr. of Waxhaw; four grandchildren, Craig Hester and wife Cheryll of Lexington, Debbie Ritchie of Statesville, Neal Helton of Waxhaw and Jackie Helton of Charlotte; and three great-grandsons, Jimmy, Joey and Johnny Ritchie of Statesville. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Mr. Craig Hester officiating. A private graveside service will be at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home before the service. MALLOY

Mrs. Queen Esther Malloy, 93, of 3330 Silas Creek Parkway passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the Silas Creek Parkway Nursing Home. She was a native and a resident of Winston-Salem and of the Baptist faith. She was a devoted homemaker and care-giver. She is survived by a son, Jerome Crosby of Winston-Salem; and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services will be at noon Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at the Russell Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 11:30 until noon. (Russell)

KING - Helen Denny Newman, 67, died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Stokes County to Albert Kester and Anna Mae Campbell Denny. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Shannon Gail and Dawn Renay Newman; and a son, Hilton Priddy. Surviving are her husband, Joe Taylor Newman; two daughters, Tammy N. (Kevin) Lindon of Rural Hall and Carmon N. (James) Selvey of King; a son, Arlen (Diane) Priddy of King; four grandchildren, Victoria L. and Catherine E. Selvey and Brittni Y. and Brandon M. Lindon; two sisters, Annie Mae Barnes and Minnie Lee Winfree, both of King; and four brothers, Albert (Nonnie) Denny, Johnny (Julia) Denny, Sampson (Shirley) Denny and Marvin (Lois) Denny, all of King. She was a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, with the Rev. Randy Roberts and the Rev. Tommy Holder officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening at Slate Funeral Home in King and other times at the home of a daughter and son-in-law, Carmon and James Selvey, in King. SIMINGTON

Mr. James Willie Simington, 77, of 2432 Caledonia Drive passed away Friday, Dec. 7, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit following a period of illness. He was a native of Winston-Salem, born Feb. 11, 1924, to the late William Sanford Simington and Mattie Thacker Simington. He attended the local public schools and was retired from Hauser Rental Services. He was a member of the Reynolds Temple CME Church, where he was a member of the senior choir, the usher board and other auxiliaries in the church, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Simington was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Simington and Leon Simington Sr.; and four sisters, Madie Simington Huntley, Zeta Simington Oree, Mildred Simington Drummond and Thelma Simington. He is survived by his devoted wife, Eloise King Simington, of the home; two daughters, Brenda Simington Gwyn, and Barbara Delores Simington, both of Winston-Salem; two sons, James W. Simington Jr. of Claymont, Del., and Sgt. Stephen Wayne Simington (Carol) of Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Wash.; five grandchildren, Torre V. Gwyn (Robynne), Torrence M. Gwyn, Stephen W. Simington Jr., Melissa Simington and Brittany Simington; a great-granddaughter, Jaslyn Gwyn; a sister, Mary Simington Adams, of Winston-Salem; four brothers, Samuel Simington of Baltimore, Md., Gartha Lee Simington (Lillie) of Winston-Salem, Connell Simington (Mary Lee), of Minneapolis and the Rev. Clarence Simington (Geneva) of Winston-Salem; a sister-in-law, Ernestine Simington; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Reynolds Temple CME Church with the Rev. Veldon Meredith officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. SMITHERMAN

EAST BEND - Mr. Ralph J. Smitherman, 100, passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2001. He was born in Yadkin County on Nov. 2, 1901, to Doc and Emma Binkley Smitherman. Mr. Smitherman was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He graduated from high school in 1925. After a year out of high school, he worked with a paving and construction company. He then decided to attend Guilford College and also did construction work to pay his tuition. He transferred to Appalachian State Teachers College and graduated in 1932. He also met his future wife, Lillian Davis, who preceded him in death, at Appalachian (now Appalachian State Univer-sity). Mr. Smitherman taught at the following schools: Bethel (near Boone), East Bend, Sedge Garden in Forsyth County and Courtney in Chatham County. He was principal at the following schools: Pine Hall from 1940 to 1946, Farmington from 1946 to 1949, and East Bend from 1950 to 1963, when he retired. He served on the Yadkin County Board of Education in the 1970s. He was a charter member of the East Bend Lions Club and of the Ruritan Club. Surviving are his son, William R. (Carolyn C.) Smitherman of East Bend; a sister, Mae Sizemore of Winston-Salem; a grandson, Bryan N. (Tara) Smitherman of East Bend; and a great-granddaughter, Cierra Lynn Smitherman of East Bend. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the East Bend Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brady and the Rev. Bobby Choplin. The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. to lie in state. Burial will follow in the Macedonia Methodist Church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Macedonia cemetery Trust Fund, c/o Edward Angell, 3237 Butner Mill Road, East Bend, NC 27018. WALL

Mrs. Winifred Hyatt Wall, 45, of Winston-Salem died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at her home. She was born April 16, 1956, in Forsyth County to Winfred and Mona Ledford Hyatt. Mrs. Wall attended First Assembly Of God. She is survived by her husband, Jonathan Roy Wall of the home; two daughters, Jennifer Atwood and husband Clint of Winston-Salem and Bridgette Wall of the home; mother and father of Pilot Mountain; and two sisters, Juanita Baker and husband Jimmy of Winston-Salem and Rebecca Hyatt of Winston-Salem. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

WOODS

Ms. Katie Mae Scales Woods of 1822 Kentucky Ave. departed this life Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home following a period of illness. She was a lifelong resident of the city where she attended the public schools and was a graduate of Winston-Salem Teachers College. Mrs. Woods was a retiree from the Madison public school system and was a member of John Wesley AME Zion Church, where she formerly served as the church organist, church historian as well as served on the senior choir, trustee and stewardess boards, Ways and Means Committee, Missionary society, and Sunday school. In the community Ms. Woods endeavored with the Columbia Heights and Skylandite Community Clubs and the Winston-Salem State Alumni Association. Surviving are a goddaughter, Jackie Amos; a devoted friend and caregiver, Julia R. Boler, both of Winston-Salem; and a host of cousins and friends, including devoted cousins, Patricia Stover, Geraldine Brown and Hattie Brown, all of Winston-Salem, Barbara Spencer of Brooklyn, N.Y., Hazeline Williams of Chicago, Ill., Clarice Parrish and Malcolm Elam, both of Washington, D.C., Melton and Richard Parker. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at John Wesley AME Zion Church, with the Rev. James Gaskins officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service hour at the church.
