ALDERMAN

CARY -Odessa Cox Alderman, 95, of 5909 Penny Road, Raleigh died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Rex Hospital. Born March 3, 1906, in Canton, Ga., She was one of 10 children born to Sam and Isa Cox. Mrs. Alderman was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. D.B. Alderman, and a daughter, Sherlene Alderman Kelly. She is survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and George Pratt, with whom she made her home; four grandchildren, Jeane (Warren) Brannon of Cary, Leigh Anne (Jon) Brann of Apex, Jennifer Kelly of Marietta, Ga, and Juanita Wheeler of Canton, Ga. Funeral services and burial will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at 3 p.m. at Canaan United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary and at the church after the service. Arrangements by Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary and Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home in Winston-Salem.

AMOS

GERMANTON - Mr. James Henry Amos, 87, passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home Dec. 11, 2001, after a short period of illness. He became a member of the Redland Church of Christ at an early age. Leaving to cherish his memories are a son, James (Dorothy) Rhynehardt of Columbus, Ohio; three daughters, Rosabelle Holmes, Virginia (Ronland) Hairston, and Cathy Amos of Mayo, Va.; a brother, Joe Thomas Amos of Mocksville; three sisters, Millie (Thomas) Rhynehardt of Mocksville, Nannie Sims, and Margaret (Thomas) Damon of Winston-Salem; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild; a stepson, Stafford (Brenda) Ziglar; seven stepdaughters, Nancy (Leon) Chisholm, Susan (Renwick) Hairston, Lillie (Jerry) Moyer, Ellen (Darryl) Russ, Joan Ziglar, Donna Murphy, and Ruby Amos; seven step-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives. A special thanks to a devoted niece, Claudette Amos Douglas of Flagstaff, Ariz., and a devoted niece and nephew, Ollie (Andrew) Norales of Stanleyville. Many thanks to the residents of the Germanton Township of Stokes County. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at 12:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Clark S. Brown & Sons Funeral Home with Odell Rhynehardt Sr. officiating. The family will meet with friends from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Mayo Baptist Church cemetery in Mayo, Va.

BOYD

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Patsy J. Lambert Boyd, 66, a resident of 505 Dillon St., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. She was born July 12, 1935, in Forsyth County, the daughter of Lloyd Lambert Sr. and Lelia Durham Lambert. She had been a resident of this area all her life. She attended Mineral Springs School during her school years. She was retired from Thomasville Furniture Industries and was a member of Park Place Baptist Church. She was married to William B. Boyd, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Jack Lambert; a sister, Norma Lea; and a sister-in-law, Gladys Lambert. Surviving are three sons, Terry William Lawson and wife Ashley of Kernersville, Barry James Lawson of Murrells Inlet, S.C., and Michael Monroe Tuttle and wife Jennifer of Thomasville; four brothers, James Leon Lambert of Clemmons, L.J. Lambert Jr. of Stanleyville, Roy D. Lambert and wife Blanche of Walkertown, and Ray Allen Lambert and wife Peggy of Pfafftown; three grandchildren, Brody Lawson, Haley Tuttle, and Sydney Tuttle; a close family friend, Jane King; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. in Park Place Baptist Church, with the Rev. Mark Sink and the Rev. Andy Lambert officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland cemetery in Winston-Salem. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the residence. The family requests that memorials be made to Park Place Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1108, Thomasville, NC 27360. Mrs. Boyd will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service.

BOYLES

LEWISVILLE - Mr. Gary Dean Boyles, 47, passed away Thursday Dec. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Boyles was born March 28, 1954, in Forsyth County to Alger and Joyce Tilghman Boyles. He was of the Baptist faith, was very active in the Southwest Forsyth Little League, and was a crewmember of Pfaff & Hill Racing Team at Bowman Gray. He was a most loving and dedicated husband, father, brother and son. His father Alger Boyles precedes him in death. He is survived by his wife, Sherry C. Boyles of the home; two sons, David and Adam Boyles of the home; mother Mrs. Joyce T. Boyles of Lewisville; a brother Bruce Boyles of Lewisville; and a niece Ms. Amber Boyles of Lewisville. A funeral service will be conducted Sunday Dec. 16, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel at 3:30p.m. by the Rev. Paul Mullen, with burial to follow at Westlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Forsyth Regional Cancer Center, 3333 Silas Creek Parkway, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BOYLES

Mr. Ralph Mitchell Boyles, 80, of Bolton Street, died at Forsyth Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 14, 2001. He was born in Kansas City, Mo., on May 19, 1921, to Nick Westley Mitchell and Lillian Boyles. Mr. Boyles was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served in the invasion of France, where he received the Purple Heart for his combat wounds during the campaign. He retired from Lorillard Tobacco Co. with 25 years of service and was a member of Ardmore Baptist Church, and also a member of the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. Boyles is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mary Jane Boyles of the home; a son, Ralph Mitchell Boyles Jr. of Raleigh; and a niece, Jean Wilson of Nashville, N.C. He was also a resident of Pine Knoll Shores, where he had many friends. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Dr. Bill Ireland officiating. The family request that memorials be sent to Ardmore Baptist Church, 530 Irving St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

BROWN

BOLIVAR, Tenn. - Mrs. Lillie J. Brown of the Pine Meadows Rehabilitation Center in Bolivar, Tenn., passed away Dec. 13, 2001 after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Brown, a retired educator, was a graduate of Lane College in Jackson, Tenn., and Memphis State University. She was preceded in death by a nephew, James E. Walker of Winston-Salem, N.C. She is survived locally by a niece, Mrs. Rosa B. Walker. The funeral will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the St. Paul CME Church. The family may be contacted at the home of Ellis and Shirley Mitchell, 55 Rogers Ave., Bolivar, TN 38008. Dixie Funeral Home, 750 Bills St., Bolivar, Tenn., is in charge of the arrangements.

CLARK

LEXINGTON - John Wayne Clark, 64, of Mitchell Avenue died Friday morning at High Point Regional Hospital. Mr. Clark was born March 16, 1937, in Davidson County to Earl Wayne Clark and Lena Mae Young Clark. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a retired accountant for Hewlett-Packard. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his brother, Rodney Clark and wife Anna of Lexington; and nieces Rhonda Clark Holman and Kathy Clark Berrier, both of Lexington. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home - Lexington Chapel and other times at the home of Rodney Clark, 1096 Riverwood Drive in Lexington. DOSHER

OAK ISLAND - Mrs. Woodrow Walton Dosher, 89, of 6403 E. Yacht Drive, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at her residence. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bethel Baptist Church, Southport where she was a member, with the Rev. William Rice officiating. Interment will follow in Bethel Baptist cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be officers of the church. Mrs. Dosher was born Dec. 8, 1912, in Southport, a daughter of the late George W. and Lula Robbins Walton. She was the widow of the Rev. J. Bryan Dosher and was also preceded in death by children Lowell and Marvolyn Dosher; and a brother, Rollie Walton. Survivors include a son, Clive (Judi) Dosher of Boiling Spring Lakes; three daughters, Mrs. Carolyn (Hugh) Price of Southport, Mrs. Paulette (Forest) Brown of Lexington, S.C., and Mrs. Ann (Tommy) Pope of Winston-Salem; a sister, Delta Hughes Peacock of Southport; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. ELDRIDGE

Mr. Charles Edward Eldridge Sr., 67, of 1130 E. 25th St. was called from labor to rest at the Kate Bitting Reynolds Hospice Home on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001. He was born Feb. 6, 1934, to the late Luther and Ada Spease Eldridge in the Bethania Community. He was a faithful member of Bethania AME Zion Church where he was a member of the Steward Board and a dedicated member of the Kitchen Committee where he loved to serve whenever and however he could. He attended Carver High School and graduated in 1954. He was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and a former employee of Dudley Products in Kernersville, N.C. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom and Luther Eldridge, and three sisters, Emma Scott, Frances Stanley and Nell Keesee. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 47 years, Hannah Shouse Eldridge; seven sons, Aaron Conrad (Katherine) of Winston-Salem, N.C., Charles E. Eldridge Jr. (Katrina), Donald E. Eldridge (Arealer), Raymond Eldridge (Angela), Edward L. Eldridge (Brenda) all of Winston-Salem, N.C., the Rev. Reginald Eldridge (Mariene) of Rural Hall, N.C., and Marcus Eldridge (Ann) of Kernersville, N.C.; three daughters, Marilynne Singletary (Randolph), Beverly Eldridge and Marcelette Eldridge, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; a brother, David Eldridge Sr. (Doris) of Bethania, N.C.; a sister, Odessa King of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six sisters-in-law, Evelyn Eldridge, Ann Eldridge and Mollie McLain, all of Winston-Salem, N.C., Anna Ervin (Joseph) and Margaret Scales of Bethania, N.C., and Ester Ambrose of Detroit, Mich.; two brothers-in-law, Henry Shouse (Doris) of Bethania, N.C., and William T. Shouse of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. WILSON - Ruby C. Stephens Farmer, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at the Brian Center of Wilson. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Pineview cemetery in Rocky Mount, with Dr. Doug Murray officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery. Survivors include a daughter, Polly Stephens Batchelor and husband Bill of Wilson; a son, Paul Madison Stephens Jr. and wife Patricia of Winston-Salem; a sister, Savada Blount; grandchildren Paula Liggon, Brooks Batchelor, Steve Stephens and wife Elizabeth, Sam Stephens and wife Carol, Kathryn Dillon and husband Greg, and Patricia Short; 11 great-grandchildren. Her hus-band, Paul M. Stephens, preceded her in death. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, 200 S. NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Claude Royal Foster, better known as "Joe," 46, of Moore Ridge Road, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Reins-Sturdivant Chapel. Burial will be in Rock Creek Baptist Church cemetery. Mr. Foster was born March 14, 1955, in Wilkes County to John Royal and Sarah Higgins Foster. Mr. Foster is survived by a daughter, Stephanie; two sons, Jared and Billy Joe; three sisters, Annie Sue Foster, Betty F. Jennings, both of North Wilkesboro, and Judy F. Craver of Winston Salem; four brothers, Jesse Willard "Pete" Foster of North Wilkesboro, James Boyd Foster of Hays, Johnny Wade Foster of Roaring River, and Wallace Allen Foster of Wilkesboro The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 Saturday night at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in North Wilkesboro. FREEMAN

KERNERSVILLE - Rebecca Ann Freeman, 55, died Dec. 12, 2001, at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, N.C. She was born Nov. 2, 1946, in Forsyth County the daughter of Charlie G. and Vada (Whicker) Whicker. Mrs. Freeman had worked at AMP, now Tyco, of Winston-Salem, N.C., for the past nine years. She is survived by her son Keith and wife Kim Freeman of Kernersville; a brother, James N. Whicker; and a special sister-in-law, Frances Whicker of Walkertown, N.C.; a sister, Peggy Lee of Ridgeway, S.C.; an aunt, Ruby Whicker of Kernersville; two granddaughters, Brittany and Lindsay; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry Pierce Chapel, Kernersville. Burial will be at Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the chapel.

GASTON

Ms. Ida Mae Young Gaston, 72, of 765 W. 14th St., known to family and friends as "Snookie," passed away Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home after a period of illness. She was born Sept. 17, 1929, the daughter of the late Flora Young and Winfield Williams. Ms. Gaston attended the local public schools, was a homemaker and mother and friend to all who knew her. She was preceded in passing by a brother, John Henry Young; three sisters, Lula McGee (Arthur), Hester Boggs, and Ineza Swanson. She is survived by two daughters, Vanette (William) McCree of Charlotte, and Flora Gaston of Winston-Salem; three sons, Dr. David (Pam) Gaston of Southfield, Mich., Samuel L. Gaston of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Marvin (Charvella) Gaston of Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Young; a very close friend, Mary McMillan; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Russell Funeral Home with Minister Brenda Sales officiating. Burial will be Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at 10 a.m. in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 1:30 until 2 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home. (Russell)

Mrs. Florence Eugene Hall of Silas Creek Manor Nursing Home, formerly of 1102 Cauga St., departed this life Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Hall. Surviving are a brother, William (Nannie) Haggins; Sonya McKeever; a host of other relatives; and devoted friends, Jean Myers, the staff of Silas Creek Manor, Tyrone, Jessie Rice, Sadie and Sam Brown, Lillie Gwyn and Lillie Mosley. Funeral services will be noon Monday, Dec. 17, 2001. Visitation will be at Beasley's Chapel. To the staff members of Silas Creek Manor and Jean Myers, C.W. Myers: trading post your love and labor shall not be in vain. God will surely give you a crown. Ashes of both husband and wife will be set free to the N.C. Outer Banks. WALKERTOWN - Baby girl Brandy Renee Liles died Wednesday Dec. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Dec. 12, 2001, in Winston-Salem to Billy and Tommye Ann Tucker Liles. Surviving in addition to the parents are three brothers, Brantley, Brody and Blake Liles of the residence; maternal grand-parents, Tommy and Barbara Tucker of King, and paternal grandparents, Billy and Helen Liles of Walkertown. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Gardens of Memory in Walkertown. The Rev. Tim Gammons will officiate. (Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek)

MATHIS

GRANITE QUARRY - James Elliott Mathis Sr., 78, a retired educator from Granite Quarry, died suddenly Thursday evening, Dec. 13. He was the husband of the former Mary Ida Steele Bear Poplar. The funeral will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Shiloh United Methodist Church in Granite Quarry. Burial will follow at church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Powles Funeral Home in Rockwell. Mathis was the principal of Granite Quarry Elementary School for 17 years from 1966 until his retirement in 1983. He also served principal-ships at Traphill Elementary School in Wilkes County, Unionville Elementary School in Union County and Union Grove High School in Iredell County. Before becoming a principal, he taught business and social studies at Walnut Cove and West Yadkin high schools. He once operated a retail furniture store in Jonesville and worked for Florence-Mayo Nuway Co., the producer of the first oil- and gas burning tobacco curers at Farmville. While at Union Grove, Mathis was a leader of the Union Grove Old Time Fiddlers Convention, a school project, and saw its attendance swell into thousands. A native of Jonesville, he was the son of the late C.G. and Maud Elliott Mathis. He was a graduate of Jonesville High School and an alumnus of Draughn Business College, Lees-McRae College, Appalachian State Teachers College and East Carolina University, holding bachelor's and master's degrees. As a youth he was a member of the first Boy Scout troop organized in Jonesville. As an adult, he served as Scoutmaster in Walnut Cove and Farmville and Cubmaster in Unionville. He was associated with Little League for 17 years, in Farmville and Granite Quarry, and was president of the Little League in Granite Quarry when it was nationally sanctioned. He was active in volunteer fire departments in Unionville and Union Grove and was a member of the Lions Club in Jonesville, the Ruritan Club in Union Grove and the Civitan Club in Granite Quarry. He organized the Granite Quarry Civitan Fiddlers Convention and served as its director for many years. In 1975, he was honored by the Mooresville Lions Club Fiddlers Convention for his contributions to old-time and bluegrass music. During World War II, Mr. Mathis served 33 months in the U.S. Navy, spending 26 months as a radar specialist aboard the USS Solomons, a baby flattop whose primary mission was finding and sinking enemy submarines. A lifelong Methodist, Mr. Mathis participated in the religious life of every community in which he lived and, for his beloved United Methodist Church, had filled virtually every position, from Sunday-school superintendent and youth leader to lay speaker and chairman of the administrative board. He was a leader in the fight against a public lottery in North Carolina. At the time of his death, he was teacher of the adult class at Shiloh United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are his daughter and son-in-law, Myra and Donald Rand of Mount Ulla; two sons, James Elliott Mathis Jr., assistant principal at Erwin Middle School, and Joe Frank Mathis, a Granite Quarry contractor whose wife, Debbie is an administrator of Lutheran Service for the Aging in Salisbury; five grandchildren; and two brothers, John Wesley Mathis and Charles (Cecilia) Mathis of Jonesville. Memorials may be made to Shiloh or to Jonesville First United Methodist churches.

MERRITT

RURAL HALL - Mrs. Emma Arrington Merritt, 80, the widow of Silas Merritt, formerly of 225 Academy St., died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Mrs. Merritt was born April 20, 1921 in Stuart, Va., to the late Samuel Houston and Mary Moss Arrington. She lived most of her life in Forsyth County until she moved to Village Care in King. Mrs. Merritt was a lifetime member of Becks Baptist Church. She retired from AT&T after 251/2 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Georgia McCollum and Lena Westmoreland; and a brother, Phillip Arrington. A devoted mother, grandmother and a wonderful mother-in-law, Mrs. Merritt is survived by a son, Wayne "Butch" Merritt and wife Delores of Germanton; a daughter, Jane Merritt Evans and husband Ronnie of King; her grandchildren, Sherri Kiser and husband Dennis, Michael Kiger and wife Lynn, Connie Brown and husband Mike, and Crystal Evans; and her great-grandchildren, Noah Kiser, Ayla Kiger, Joshua and Jacob Widner, Abbi Evans and Austin Willard. In addition she is survived by four brothers: Paul Arrington, Jack Arrington, Guy (Buck) Arrington and Roy Arrington. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel, with the Rev. Ray Hamilton officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
