ADVANCE - Mrs. Mary Erwin Overcash, 91, formerly of States-ville Highway in Mooresville, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Meadow-brook Terrace of Davie in Ad-vance. Mrs. Overcash is survived by a son, William Harrison Overcash and wife Margaret of Mocksville; a daughter, Pattie O. Kimmons of Roanoke, Va.; and grandchildren William Overcash Jr. of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Myra O. Mathis and husband Jerry of Clemmons. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Centenary United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Rev. Marion Fulk officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001 at Calvin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville. Calvin-Cook Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. Overcash.

PEOPLES

MOCKSVILLE - Mr. John Stacy Peoples, 87, of U.S. 64 W. in Davie County, died Dec. 13, 2001, after a short battle with cancer. Mr. Peoples was born in Yadkin County on June 7, 1914. He was married to the late Mavis Gobble Peoples for 66 years. Mr. Peoples retired from Southern Greyhound in 1972 and spent many happy retirement years fishing and hunting with friends and family. He spent many happy hours looking after the farm and being with his family. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and William Creasy of Clemmons; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Diane Peoples of Davie County; a granddaughter, Cindy Barkley (Bruce) of Raleigh; two grandsons, Ronald Creasy of Raleigh, and Andy Peoples of Asheville; two great-grand-daughters, Meredith and Kathleen Barkley of Raleigh. Funeral ser-vices will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Clint Branch. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care Center, 1100-C S. ROBERTSON

WALKERTOWN - Mr. Julian Dean Robertson, 50, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at his residence. He was born Feb. 20, 1951, to Rufus Julian Robertson Jr. and Lois Grubbs Robertson in Forsyth County. He was employed by Chemcraft for more than 27 years. He is survived by a daughter, Deena Robertson; two sons, Jacob and Joshua Robertson; a granddaughter, Chloe Alexis Bolen, all of Forsyth County; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R.J. Robertson of Walkertown; a sister, Kay Gordon and her husband Johnny of Kernersville; a niece, Kendall Gordon; and a special friend, Sharon Kroemer. He is also survived by numerous other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The Rev. Douglas Butler will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Vogler's Main Street Chapel.

ROYALL

ELKIN - E. Ray Royall, 77, of 337 Elk Spur St., our loving husband and daddy, completed his heavenly ground journey to be with his Heavenly Father at the setting of the sun at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. He was born Dec. 16, 1923, in Surry County to Esca Clinton and Ethel Brown Royall. He was a member of West Elkin Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 50 years. He was also a longtime Sunday-school teacher and served as choir director for many years. He proudly served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II and was the first American to cross the Seine River in France as he lead the American troops across. Those preceding him in death were his parents; and a brother, Sonny Royall. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Walsie Holbrook Royall of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Coley Connon of Jonesville, and Paula and Mike Collins of Elkin; two grand-children, Ronnie Dean Reynold of Roaring River and Tammy Lynn Sauls and Donnie of Greensboro; two great-grandchildren, Joshua Kyle and Eric Ray Sauls of Greensboro; a brother, Bill and Nita Royall of Montgomery, Ala.; a sister-in-law, Deloris Royall, of Winston-Salem; five nieces; and a nephew. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at West Elkin Baptist Church by the Rev. Dwayne Byrd and the Rev. Joe Blackburn. He will lie in state from 1:30 to 2 p.m. before the service. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery. Flowers will be accepted, or memorials may be made to the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery Fund. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at John-son Funeral Home in Elkin.

TAYLOR

EAST BEND - Mr. Clyde Junior Taylor, 70, of 4410 Union Hill Road, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at his home. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and grandfather. He was born in Yadkin County on Aug. 27, 1931, to Garlie and Amanda Ross Taylor. Mr. Taylor was of the Methodist faith and was retired from the automotive business. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Marlene Dezern Taylor of the home; two daughters, Gayle Kellam, and Katrina (Chand) Choplin, both of East Bend; a son, Barry (Azucena) Taylor of East Bend; a special grandson, Brandon Taylor of the home; six sisters; two brothers; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. at the Huff Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Bobby Choplin and the Rev. Jonathan Casstevens. Burial will follow in Union Hill Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Saturday evening at Huff Funeral Home in East Bend. VAUGHN

REIDSVILLE — Jimmie Woodrow Vaughn, 87, of the Carolina House and formerly of 934 Lawsonville Ave., died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Annie Penn Skilled Care. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel and the interment will follow in Evergreen Memory Gardens. Mr. Vaughn was born in Rockingham County to the late Edward C. and Donna Hopkins Vaughn. He was a retired automobile salesman and attended Penn Memorial Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers. He is survived by his wife, Mary Flynn Vaughn of the Carolina House; a son, Ed Vaughn of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Theresa McCollum and husband Nathan of Reidsville; grandchildren Amber Vaughn, Ginger Coffey and husband Brian, Anna Tolley and husband Brian, and Michael McCollum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Wilkerson Funeral Home and other times at Theresa’s home, 104 Gayleway Court. WAGONER

JONESVILLE — Warren G. Wagoner, 80, of 295 Oakland Blvd. passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001. Mr. Wagoner was born in Wilkes County on May 29, 1921, to James Pearson Wagoner and Arkie Durham Wagoner. He was a World War II veteran and a member of Fall Creek Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Harold Queen; a grandson, Dwayne Queen; three sisters, Lizzie Turner, Daisy Swaim and Ethel Cheek; and a brother, Lonnie Wagoner. He is survived by his wife, Foda Parks Wagoner; a daughter, Joan Wagoner (Al Rogers) of Elkin; a son, Wayne (Betty) Queen of Virginia; a daughter-in-law, Ena Queen of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Pearl Misenhemier (Jim) of Yadkinville, and Ruth Walker of Hamptonville; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a host of friends who enjoyed his banjo-picking. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Don Hudson, the Rev. Don Stephens and the Rev. Evert Carter. Burial will follow in Sunrise cemetery in Jonesville. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 9 at Johnson’s Funeral Home in Elkin.

WALKER

Mrs. Mattie Phillips Walker, 91, of Winston-Salem passed away Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at the Winston-Salem Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center. She was born Nov. 5, 1910, in Forsyth County to William L. and Lula Warner Phillips. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, David Gaston Walker Sr. Mrs. Walker, a longtime member of Pleasant View Baptist Church, was a member of the WMU and a Sunday school teacher. Surviving are three daughters, Linda W. Mabe (husband Bobby) of Winston-Salem, Janet W. Edwards of Lewisville, and Ida Joan Walker of the home; a son, David G. Walker Jr. (wife Vicki) of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Jill M. Smitherman (husband Craig), Ryan and Catherine Edwards of Lewisville; and a great-grandson, Garrett Walker Smitherman; two brothers, John Bynum, and Harley Phillips, both of Winston-Salem; and two sisters, Margie Hagstrom of Denver, N.C., and Emma Davis of East Bend. A funeral service will be held at 2:30p.m. Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church with the Rev. B.A. Carroll officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory at Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

ANDERSON

Mr. Myron E. Anderson of 1111 E. Second St., Apt. L., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Winston-Salem and a former employee of Forsyth Medical Center. Mr. Anderson attended New Gospel Tabernacle. He is survived by his wife, Samantha S. Anderson of the home; his mother, Mrs. Gloria B. Anderson of Winston-Salem; a brother, Kevin Wayne (Stephanie) Anderson of Newport News, Va.; his mother-in-law, Ms. Thelma Sloan of Winston-Salem; six aunts; four uncles; three great-aunts; a great-uncle; a niece, Ke-Neshia Lyons of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Kevin Wayne Anderson Jr. of Newport News, Va.; and several cousins. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, from New Gospel Tabernacle, where Elder Rogers will officiate and interment to follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the services from 2 until 2:30 p.m. at the church. ARCHIE

Mrs. Louise France Archie of 524 Timberline Ridge Lane departed this life Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at her residence following a period of illness. She was a native of Mabscott, W.Va., and a resident of Winston-Salem for many years. Ms. Archie was a 15-year veteran of the Forsyth County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff. In the community she was a faithful and devoted member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, on the Senior Usher Board, Women's Choir and as a Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by husband, George Archie Sr.; and two brothers, Joseph and Roscoe France. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Jacqueline Hamilton, Udona Faye Green, both of Winston-Salem, and Melissa Ann Green of the home; nine grandchildren; two stepsons, Wayne (Gloria) Archie of Sanford, N.C., and George W. Archie Jr. of Winston-Salem; a sister, Lucy Mayhew of Winston-Salem; three brothers, James W. France of Mount Vernon, N.Y., Bobby G. France of Winston-Salem, and Luther T. France of Sumter, S.C.; an aunt, Dorothy Ceasar of Mount Airy; a devoted friend, Ada Scales of Winston-Salem; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at 2:30 p.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with Dr. Paul A. Lowe Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen cemetery. JONESVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth Freeman Brown, 87, of North Main Street passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Brown was born May 27, 1914, in Rappahonnock, Va., to James and Lena Fant Freeman. Mrs. Brown retired from Chatham Manufacturing and was a member of Arlington First Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by two sons, Bill Brown and Donnie Brown; five brothers, Bill, Carson, James, Frank, and Jack Freeman; four sisters, Lillian Applewhite, Ada Mickle, Mary Woodruff, and Ethel Myers. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Phyllis J. Brown of Jonesville; a brother and sister-in-law, Charlie and Dewitt Freeman of State Road; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Estelle and Ralph Byrd of Jonesville, and Catherine Martin of Jonesville; two grandsons and spouses, Robbie and Lynne Brown of East Bend, Tim and Deana Brown of Suwanee, Ga.; a great-granddaughter, Jessica Lynne Brown. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at 2 p.m. at Arlington First Baptist Church by the Rev. Flake Mason and the Rev. Bill Byrd. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mrs. Brown will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Arlington First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall Building Fund. Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin is serving the Brown family.

EDDY

Mr. Ralph Aldo Eddy, 87, of Winston-Salem died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at W.G. Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. He was born Dec. 23, 1913, in Paden City, W.Va., to the late Barbara Alice Frye Eddy and James Presley Eddy. He was educated in Barberton, Ohio, schools and was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Eddy was employed by the city water department of Barberton until his retirement in 1978. He was a member of the First Church of Christ in Barberton, the Barberton Masonic Lodge, AF & AM, and the VFW Post in Barberton. His wife, Thelma Elizabeth Yohey Eddy, preceded him in death Dec. 8, 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Sandra Everson of Barberton and Linda Dague of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. Mr. Eddy will be interred at the U.S. National cemetery in Salisbury at a later date. Summersett Funeral Home in Salisbury is in charge of the arrangements.

FULP

Mrs. Mabel Jordan Fulp of Winston-Salem went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born to the Rev. George Thomas Jordan and Marjorie Carrico Jordan on July 15, 1911. She was a longtime member of Edgewood Baptist Church, where she served as organist for many years. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James Edgar Caudle, in 1930; and her second husband, Theodore Worth Fulp, in 1990. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Anna Hutchins (Vernon), Mrs. Shirley Crews (Marvin), Mrs. Gail McWethy (Joe), and Mrs. Marilyn Gibbs (John); a sister, Mrs. Gene Turzie of Columbus, Ohio; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. at Vogler's Reynolda Road Chapel with the Rev. Joe McWethy officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn cemetery in Clemmons. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Monday evening at Vogler's Reynolda Road Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Lane, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

HEATH

CLEMMONS - Samuel J. Heath, born June 20, 1924, in Rock Hill, S.C., and raised in Mount Holly, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at his home in Clemmons after a battle with pancreatic and lung cancer. Sam was previously a longtime resident of Charlotte. After 37 years in the automobile business, Sam retired as the dealer and president of Cloverdale Ford Inc. in 1990. A faithful member and deacon at Calvary Baptist Church of Winston-Salem, he was also a sustaining member of Exchange Club/SCAN of Winston-Salem and a World War II and Navy veteran. Sam was a loving and generous spirit and was the consummate husband, father, friend and employer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Joe Ann; his mother, Annie of Mount Holly; a brother, Norman, and a sister, Evelyn Anderson, both of Mount Holly; four children, Teresa Wilson and husband Larry of Charlotte, Iris Gress and husband Jim of Clemmons, Kim Heath and wife Laurie of Clemmons, and Glenn Heath of Yadkinville; and 11 grandchildren. Family and friends are invited for visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Calvary Baptist Church, 5000 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18 at Calvary Baptist Church preceding the burial service at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. NELSON

DANBURY - Mr. Ricky Lee Nelson, 36, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was born in Guilford County to Broadus Richard and Glenda Joyce Nelson. He was employed by Defender Cleaning Service. Ricky enjoyed playing his guitar, singing and was a big Elvis fan. He was a loving friend to all that knew him. Preceding him in death were his brother, Richie Nelson; maternal grandfather, Roy Joyce; and paternal grandfather, Broadus Nelson. Surviving in addition to his parents are his wife, Susan Williams Nelson of the home; maternal grandmother, Ruth Joyce; paternal grandmother, Mildred Neal; sisters and brothers, Sherry Weis, Tammy Nelson, Broadus Richard Nelson Jr., Melinda Kirkman, and Robbie Nelson; and many special nieces and nephews. An 11 a.m. funeral service will be held Tuesday Dec. 18, 2001, at Burroughs Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory, Walkertown. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening at the funeral home and other times at the home.

REECE

HIGH POINT - Mrs. Grace Henry Collier Reece, 87, a resident of Sunbridge Nursing Home and formerly of Murphy Drive, died Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the nursing home. She was born in Toccoa, Ga., on Nov. 14, 1914, a daughter of John Henry Collier and Mary Collins Collier, and had been a resident of Davidson County most of her life. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Lena Johnson Sunday School Class. She was a former employee of Thomasville Furniture Industries and Mid Town Grocery. On Sept. 11, 1938, she was married to Vann Reece, who died March 15, 1976. Surviving are two sons, Vann (Tommy) Reece Jr. and his wife Yvonne of Winston-Salem, and David L. Reece Sr. and his wife Betty of Reidsville; four grandchildren, Steve Reece, David L. Reece Jr., Mrs. Doug (Sandra) Roach, and Susan Reece.; four great-grandchildren, Zachary Reece, Stacey Roach, Derick Roach, and Preston Knowles. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel in Wallburg by the Rev. Mike Goode. Burial will be in Shady Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of a son, Vann (Tommy) Reece Jr., 186 Lansdowne Place, Winston-Salem. SAWYER

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Karl Summey Sawyer Sr., 85, died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Presbyterian Wesley Care Center in Charlotte. The funeral service is at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, in the Wilson Chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 5301 Albemarle Road, Charlotte, (704) 568-2106, with the Rev. Dr. J.A. Harbinson of St. Mark's Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Sharon Memorial Park following the funeral service. Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Wilson Chapel. The family will also receive friends at the home of Pierce Sawyer, 5208 Carriage Drive Circle, Charlotte. Mr. Sawyer was a native of Gaston County, N.C., born Sept. 21, 1916, in Dallas. He was the son of the late professor George Lippard Sawyer and Mrs. Eula Summey Sawyer. He served 391/2 years in education as a teacher, coach and administrator in schools in Union County, N.C., and Kings Mountain, N.C., the Blue Ridge School for Boys in Hendersonville, and the old Central and Garinger High Schools in Charlotte. He retired in 1979 as chairman of the math department at Garinger High School. He formerly held membership in a number of educational organizations. He was a World War II U.S. Army Air Forces veteran, serving 13 months stateside and 27 months in the European Theater of Operations as a weather observer and also as an upper air specialist. He received four battle stars and various campaign ribbons. Mr. Sawyer graduated from Boone High School. He was a graduate of Appalachian State Teachers College, now Appalachian State University, in 1937 with a B.S. cum laude. He received his M.A. in mathematics, also from Appalachian State Teacher's College, in 1951. While an undergraduate at ASTC, he played four years on the varsity tennis team. He has belonged to various civic and veterans organizations. Currently, he was a member of American Legion Post No. 1981 in Raleigh. Mr. Sawyer is survived by his sons, Karl S. Sawyer Jr. and his wife Pam, and G. Pierce Sawyer and his wife Faith, all of Charlotte; his daughters, Mrs. Kay Cowan and her husband Ben of Mint Hill, and Mrs. Jeanne Matlock and her husband Albert of Weddington; eight grandsons; and five granddaughters. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, NC 28204 or to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1001 Queens Road, Charlotte, NC 28207.
