SCHULTZ

NEW BERN - E. Dale Schultz, 76, died Saturday at Craven Regional Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Schultz was born Feb. 8, 1925, in Winston-Salem and was the son of William Nicholas Schultz and Helen Deadmon Schultz, who preceded him in death. He graduated from R.J. Reynolds High School in Winston-Salem. He was awarded the Thomas Wilson's Trophy for Athlete of the Year in 1943 for football, field and track. He served 31/2 years in the Naval Air Corps in the Pacific. Mr. Schultz graduated from N.C. State University with a B.S. in engineering. He held a number of positions in Aerospace, Materials and Aeronautical Engineering at Marine Corps Air Station (M.C.A.S.), Cherry Point, N.C. After retiring as Director of Materials Engineering at the Naval Air Rework Facility, he was a consultant engineer for the Support Systems Associates for Marine Corps Air Station (M.C.A.S.), Cherry Point. A graveside service will be held at the Lakeside Chapel at Greenleaf Memorial Park on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, with the Rev. Dwight Williams officiating. He is survived by his wife, Beverly Moody Schultz of New Bern; three daughters, Linda S. Byrd and husband Johnnie Byrd of Kinston, N.C., Jean S. Nuttall and husband Mike Nuttall of Atlanta, and Betsy S. Norris and husband Rusty Norris of Wake Forest, N.C.; two brothers, Bob Schultz of Winston-Salem, and Bill Schultz of Madison, N.C.; eight grandchildren, Jenny Byrd, Molly Byrd, Jack Byrd, Emily Nuttall, Laura Nuttall, Danielle Norris, Brittany Norris, and Zack Norris; and two special friends, his nurse Thelma West of New Bern, and lifelong friend Joseph B. Rawis of Oriental, N.C. The family will be receiving friends at Cotten Funeral Home from 7 to 8 on Monday night. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children, P.O. WALL

YADKINVILLE - Mr. Bobby Dare "B.D." Wall Jr., 39, died Friday, Dec. 14, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was born Feb. 8, 1962, in Yadkin County to Bobby Dare Wall Sr. and Pansy Dinkins Wall. Mr. Wall was a graduate of Forbush High School and was a member of Forbush Baptist Church. He was employed by Max Welborn's Automobiles. Bobby was a lover of animals and his two best friends were his Siamese cats, Brother and Sister. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his uncle and aunt, James A. and Thelma D. Hutchens, who were his parents since he was five years old; and a half-sister, Judy Brewer of Greensboro. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at Forbush Baptist Church cemetery by the Rev. Bill James and the Rev. Kelly Porter. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at Gentry Family Funeral Home, 5108 U.S. 601 N., Yadkinville, prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted but memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

YATES

TOBACCOVILLE - Hazel Mackie Yates, 85, died at her home on Sunday morning, Dec. 16, 2001, following a lengthy period of declining health. A native of Forsyth County, she was born May 8, 1916, to the late Charlie H. and Daisy Williams Mackie. Mrs. Yates was a member of Doub's Chapel United Methodist Church, and was retired from Knollwood Hall Nursing Home. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, William H. Yates Sr. in 1977; a great-granddaughter, Sandy Jo Manring in 1996; and four brothers. Surviving are two daughters, Grace Manring of the home, and Cynthia Marie Bowen of Rural Hall; a son, William H. Yates Jr. and wife Bernice of King; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Mrs. Yates will be conducted at Hayworth-Miller Funeral Home, Silas Creek Chapel at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, officiated by the Rev. Dwight Cartner. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall. The family will receive friends and relatives from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A special thanks to Dr. D. Stallings and his staff, and also the nurses of the W-S/Forsyth County Hospice for the care given to mother during her illness.

ALLISON

Mr. William Alfred Allison, 50, of 2900 Weisner Court passed away Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at For-syth Medical Center. He was born Oct. 11, 1951, in Kings Mountain, to Lou Ollie Wilson. He attended the local schools of Winston-Salem and was a graduate of Kings Mountain High School in Kings Mountain. Mr. Allison was a retired veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. Alfred was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, where he served on the usher board. He was a faithful, dedicated, loving family man, who would always be there when anyone needed him. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Jesse B. Wilson Sr., and grandmother, Mrs. Maggie Louise Duncan. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 27 years, Barbara Ann Allison; a daughter, Latisha Ann Allison of the home; his mother, Lou Ollie Wilson of Winston-Salem; three sisters, Sherri Wilson, Valderia Raynor and Angela Wilson, all of Winston-Salem; a brother, Jesse Banks Wilson Jr. of Winston-Salem; his mother-in-law, Nancy Huffin of Winston-Salem; three sisters-in-law, Nancy Patterson, Marolyn Moore and Carolyn Huffin, all of Winston-Salem; three brothers-in-law, Johnnie Huffin Jr. (Bridgett) of Korea, Anthony Huffin (Quanda) and Isaiah Frankilin Huffin of Winston-Salem; a devoted aunt, Alberta Duncan; a host of other aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins; and a devoted friend, Aldean Adams of Kings Mountain. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the Solid Rock Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charles Leak officiating. Burial will be in the family plot of the Evergreen cemetery. ANDERSON

Mary Elizabeth Ferguson Ander-son, 86, formerly of Raleigh, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Salemtowne, the Moravian retirement community. She was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Greenville, N.C., to Edward Benjamin and Margaret Cotten Skinner Ferguson. She was the widow of William Hinton Wilder Anderson. Mrs. Anderson graduated from St, Mary's College (now St. Mary's School) in Raleigh and East Carolina Teachers College. Before raising her family, she taught in Bertie County and also worked as a nutritionist for the WPA. Mrs. Anderson was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church , Winston Salem, and was a member of St. Mary's Circle and had served as a member of the Altar Guild. She also worked on the church bazaar for many years, as well as being a volunteer in the church office. During the time that she lived in Raleigh, she was honored to serve as a member and president of the Order of The Daughters of The King at Christ Episcopal Church. She was a past president of the alumnae association of St. Mary's College and also served on the alumnae council. She is survived by two sons, William Hinton Wilder "Buck" Anderson Jr. and David Ira Fort Anderson, both of Raleigh; a daughter, Margaret Skinner Anderson McGee (Mrs. John Harrelson) of Winston-Salem; and six grandchildren. A daughter and son preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Winston-Salem, with the Rev. Donald Goodheart officiating. A graveside committal is scheduled for a later date at Cherry Hill cemetery (The Episcopal Church cemetery) in Greenville, N.C. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made either to St. Mary's School, Raleigh; St. Paul's Episcopal Church Chapel Fund, Winston-Salem; or Salemtowne, the Moravian retirement com-munity, also in Winston-Salem.

ASHLEY

Mrs. Ollie Mae Gaddy Ashley, 82, of 760-K N. Highland Ave. passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the Nursing Center at Oak Summit. She was a native of Wadesboro, born Nov. 2, 1919, and was a member of St. Peters World Outreach Center, where she was a member of the Senior Laurel Ministry. She is survived by a daughter, Eliza G. Thacker; three grandchildren, Earline Abbott (Alphonso), Olivia L. Gaddy and Tommy Lee Thacker, all of Winston-Salem; five great-grand-children; a great-great-grand-child; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at St. Peters World Outreach Center, with Bishop J.C. Hash Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. BLACKBURN

ELKIN - Mr. William Paul Blackburn, 75, of Austin Traphill Road passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro. Mr. Blackburn was born Nov. 19, 1926, in Surry County to Ira and Adelaide Harris Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and retired from Cash & Carry Wholesale and was of the Pentecostal Holiness faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Harvey and Clay Blackburn; and two sisters, Grace Weatherman and Fay Adams. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Morgan Blackburn of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Bill and Connie Blackburn of Hamptonville; a daughter, Peggy Ann Blackburn of the home; and a grandson, Jamie Swisher of Charlotte. CHAPPELL

ELKIN - Mrs. Ima Mounce Chappell, 93, died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at the Elkin Health Care Center after a long illness. Mrs. Chappell was born in Surry County on Nov. 16, 1908, to the late John William Mounce and Daisy Venable Mounce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Chappell; a daughter, Mary Ann Haddix; a son, Junior Chappell; a great-grandson, Alex Chappell; and two brothers, Heber Mounce and Ralph Mounce. She was a member of Union Cross Baptist Church and was a retired schoolteacher and principal, having taught at Westfield, Shoals and Little Richmond, where she taught and was the principal until the school was closed and moved to Dobson, where she also taught. Surviving are two grandsons, Randy and wife Janna Chappell of Hixson, Tenn., and John Chappell of Winston-Salem; two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Zachery Chappell; four sisters, Velna Riggan, Stella Jankins, Hazel Cummings and Wilma Cocker-ham, all of Elkin; and a sister-in-law, Velma Mounce of Elkin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at the Davis & Son Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Crestwood Memorial Gardens in Elkin. RALEIGH - Mr. Ricky Gene Cheek, 37, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001. He is survived by his mother, Betty Baker Wills of Raleigh; and his grandmother, Eloise Baker of Winton-Salem. Ricky was preceded in death by his father, Donald Dewitt Cheek. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Crestview Memorial Park in Rural Hall, with the Rev. CLARK

HIGH POINT - Mr. W. Devon Clark, 71, of 1511 Pinehurst Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at his residence. He was born Nov. 29, 1930, to Earl W. and Vera Mitchell Clark. He had been a resident of this area all his life. He was a veteran in the U.S. Army, where he was a paratrooper with the 28th Infantry. Mr. Clark was owner and operator of Quality Fabrics Inc. in High Point until his retirement. He was a member of First Assembly of God, University Parkway, in Winston-Salem. On July 19, 1951, he married the former Eula Coffey of the home, who survives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Chalmas Earl Clark. Also surviving are two sons, Nick Clark and wife Debbie of Kernersville, and Steve Clark and wife Sandy of Kernersville; two daughters, Karen Shaw and husband Larry, and Lori Briggs, all of High Point; 11 grandchildren, Cheri Hanlon, Joe Clark, Kasidy Clark, Jennifer Shaw, Brittany Shaw, Katherine Shaw, Robbie Clark, Melanie Clark, Heidi Johnson, Ashley Briggs and Misty Briggs; two great-grandchildren, Shaina Perez and Kendra Perez; and a brother, Keith D. KING - Mrs. Elizabeth Jean Frazier, 69, of Bastian, Va., died at her home Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001. She was born Sept. 13, 1932, in Forsyth County to Claude and Elizabeth Little. Mrs. Frazier was a medical records clerk and retired from Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. She was a member of Bland Baptist Church in Bland, Va. Surviving are her husband, Kenneth Gordon Frazier of the home; two daughters, Teresa F. Allen and husband Johnny of King and Cindy F. Priddy and husband Jerry of Pinnacle; a son, Greg Frazier of Hillsville, Va.; five grandchildren, Mitchell and Daniel Allen, Scott Tuttle, Dylan Priddy and Christie Frazier; and a great-grandchild. Evan Allen. Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Slate Funeral Home in King, with the Rev. James Lambert officiating. ADVANCE - Mrs. Betty Ellis Fry, 71, died Dec. 20, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 24, 1930, in Davie County to William Albert and Nancy McBride Ellis. Mrs. Fry was a member of Macedonia Moravian Church. She was preceded in death by three sisters, Ruth Sheek, Louise Bennett and Catherine Ellis, and a brother, Ben Ellis. She is survived by her husband, George Thomas Fry of the home; two sisters, Nancy Dinkins and Pat Sheets of Yadkinville; and six brothers, Gilmer Ellis of Farmington, Luther Ellis, Ausbon Ellis and Francis "Shorty" Ellis, all of Advance, and W.A. Ellis and Gene Ellis of Mocksville. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Macedonia Moravian Church, with the Rev. Greg Little and Mr. F.R. "Shorty" Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. Mrs. Fry will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. There will be no stated visitation; however, Mrs. Fry may be viewed anytime after 2 p.m. Friday. The Rev. Richard "Bill" Hawkins Jr., 58, of 1708 Brookwood Drive passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. He was a native of New York and was a graduate of Brooklyn College, Brooklyn. He was a member of the Voice of Truth Ministries, where he was vice chairman of the trustee board. He was the owner of Alpha and Omega Enterprise and was a member of Junior Achievement. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Hawkins Sr. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Francena W. Hawkins of the home; his dear mother, Martha Jackson of Winston-Salem; two stepsons, Emanuel Walters and Corey Walters, both of Winston-Salem; four sisters, Deborah Hawkins Searcy, Christine H. Lomax, Jeannette Hawkins and Edna Hawkins, all of Virginia; three brothers, Nolan Wilder of Winston-Salem, and Cecil Hawkins and Michael Hawkins, both of Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Cheryl McIlwain (Samuel) and Linda Scales; a brother-in-law, Bernard Scales Jr. (Gloria), all of Winston-Salem; a devoted aunt, Ruth Lee Carter of Winston-Salem; two nieces, Tina Baker and Kendra Hairston, both of Virginia; and a host of other relatives and friends. Mrs. Annie Lee Welch Hicks, 78 of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Hicks was born in Wilkes County to Willard and Stella Zora Jones Welch, and she retired as a supervisor for Sara Lee Corp. She was a member of Konnoak Hills Moravian Church, and was an avid mall walker. Survivors include a son and his wife, Charles Anthony and Elaine C. Hicks of Reidsville; a daughter, Sandra Leigh Merritt of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four grandchildren, Katherine Lee Nolen and husband Randy of Myrtle Beach, Christian Anthony Hicks and wife April of Reidsville, Allison Faith Hicks of Carrboro, and Steven Vance Merritt of Myrtle Beach; a niece, Sylvia Williams; and a nephew, Phil Greene, both of Statesville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Konnoak Hills Moravian Church with the Rev. John D. Rights officiating. Interment will follow in the Moravian Graveyard. INGRAM

Deacon Jhuria "Jay" Ingram of 3721 Whitfield Drive, Winston-Salem, departed this life Wed-nesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. He was a native of Lilesville, but had lived in Winston-Salem since early childhood. He was the son of Jake and Etta Allen Ingram, who preceded him in death, as did a sister, Willa Page. He attended the public schools of Winston-Salem and was a graduate of Atkins High School Class of 1950. He completed the R.J. Reynolds manage-ment development pro-gram of behavioral management and became the first black to assume the title of production manager for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. He retired from R.J. Reynolds in 1989 after 36 years of service. He possessed a keen interest in photography and completed the photography training program at Stratford Career Institute. Mr. Ingram joined the New Bethel Baptist Church under the pastorate of Dr. Jerry Drayton more than 40 years ago, and at the time of his death served as vice chairman of the deacon board, member of the trustee board, the communion singers, usher board, Post Youth usher adviser, Sunday school class No. 5, laymen league and past photographer for the New Bethel Spotlight. He was a member of Forsyth County Deacon's Union, where he served as treasurer until his health failed. Deacon Ingram is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Hattie N. Ingram; a brother, Lawyer (Lula) Little of Ansonville; a devoted sister, Annie Ingram-McMorris; a loving sister-in-law, Alma Humphrey, Winston-Salem; a host of nieces and nephews: Lolita (Roosevelt) Sims, Sandra Addison, Sandra (Paul) Hayes, Deborah Odom, Janice Faust, Raymond Jones, George (Sharon) Hauser III, Gregory Hauser of Winston-Salem; Lorraine Little, Jeffery Ingram of Charlotte; Felecia (Decosta) Huggins, Carl Page of Georgetown, S.C.; Lenise (Brian) Braziel, Niceville, Fla.; Denise (Derrick) Richardson, San Pedro, Calif.; Karen Lobo, Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; James (Edwina) Nelson, Pensacola, Fla.; Terrance Nelson, Smyrna, Ga.; and a host of cousins, other relatives and special friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at the New Bethel Baptist Church, where Dr. Jerry Drayton will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. Family visitation will be held 30 minutes before the service from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. The funeral cortege will assem-ble and leave from the residence at noon. MENNILL

AYLMER, Ontario, Canada - Mr. Joseph Lloyd Mennill died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 12, at the age of 85. He was born in Glanworth, Ontario, on Sept. 3, 1916, to Edward and Clara (Stevens) Mennill. He was a beloved husband of 55 years to Marjorie Dale Mennill. He was a dear father to his daughter, Jo Anne Thomas and husband William of Winston-Salem and his son, David Mennill and wife Judy of Aylmer, Ontario. He was a loving grandfather to Rita Mennill of Aylmer, Ontario, and John Lea Dillard Reynolds of Winston-Salem. He was preceded in death by his four sisters, Alice Mennill, Velma Foster, Myrtle Hill and Ella Welch, and his only brother, Russell Mennill. He was a veteran of World War II, where he served as a navigator in the Royal Canadian Air Force. On Dec. 13, 1942, while on a bombing mission, his plane was shot down over the North Sea. He was rescued and spent the rest of the war as a prisoner in Stalag Luft III. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in forestry and received a master's degree in forestry from Yale University. He was the director of the Ontario Forest Ranger School and was the first director of the Ontario Police College. He served as a past district governor of Rotary International 6330 and enjoyed his many volunteer activities in the Aylmer commun-ity, especially the Canadian Cancer Society and Aylmer Historical Association. The funeral service was held Dec. 17 at St. Paul's United Church. Internment was at White Oaks cemetery, London. Remembrances to the Aylmer Area Community Founda-tion, 46 Talbot St. W., Aylmer, Ontario N5H 1J6; or the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation, 189 Elm St., St. Thomas, Ontario N5A 5C4 would be appreciated. YADKINVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Gentry Mickle, 76, a loving, devoted, Christian wife, of Countryside Lane, formerly of Barnes Road, Winston-Salem, passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Willowbrook Health Care. She was born July 21, 1925, in Yadkin County to the late William Miles and Leona Pendry Gentry. She was retired from Western Electric with 37 years of service. Mrs. Mickle was an active member of Center United Methodist Church, serving the church with various duties such as the U.M.Y.F. youth leader or by organizing the Christmas plays. She loved and was devoted to both her family and church family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Iva G. Helton; a brother, George R. Gentry; a brother-in-law, Olon Mickle; and a sister-in-law, Rachel Mickle. Surviving are her husband, James Mickle of the home; a stepson, Perry (Janie) Mickle; a stepgrandson, Garret Mickle of Brooksville, Fla.; three sisters, Bernice Norman and Margaret (James Hugh) Williams, all of Yadkinville and Wilma (Harold) Casstevens of Hartsville, S.C.; two brothers, Lester Gentry of Hays and Frank (Barbara) Gentry of Yadkinville; two sisters-in-law; seven brothers-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Her funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Center United Methodist Church by the Rev. Oliver Helsabeck and the Rev. Harold Mickle. She will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Center United Methodist Church Build-ing Fund, 1349 Center Road, Yadkinville, NC 27055. Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkin-ville is serving the family.
