BELEWS CREEK - Mrs. Asilee McGee Mustin, 74, of 6255 Belews Creek Road died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was born Aug. 5, 1927, in Forsyth County, a daughter of Herbert Lee and Hattie Savage McGee. She retired from Bowman Gray School of Medicine after 30 years of service. She was a member of Antioch United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Surviving are her husband, Elmer L. Mustin of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Ramona and Bobby Smith of Walnut Cove; two sons and daughters-in-law, Von and Cheryl Mustin and Curtis Lee and Kaye Mustin, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters, Nelda Warren and LaRue Green; a brother, Raymond McGee; five grandchildren, Tiffany Mustin, Rebecca Mustin, Lori Mustin, Jeremy Cooke, Kasey Smith; and a great-grandson, Dylan Cardwell. A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Antioch United Methodist Church by the Rev. Wes Austin, the Rev. Jimmy Lawton and the Rev. Oliver Helsabeck. NELSON

KERNERSVILLE - Mr. Troy William Nelson, 84, of 230 Hopkins Road died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born Dec. 18, 1917, in Rockingham County, a son of the late Winston and Glennie McGee Nelson. Mr. Nelson retired from Crawford Machine Shop and enjoyed farming. He was a founding member of the Beeson Crossroads Fire Department and a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Helen Morphis Nelson of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Norman Still and Carolyn and Lee Pope, all of Kernersville; three sons and daughters-in-law, Troy Jr. and Janet Nelson of Richmond, Melvin and Vonda Nelson of Kernersville and Kenneth and Linda Nelson of High Point; a sister, Dorothy King of Kernersville; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Gospel Light Baptist Church, by Dr. Bobby Roberson and the Rev. Frank Shumate. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory. REID

Mr. Marvin Reid, 73, of 1526 E. 25th St. passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Winston-Salem April 29, 1928, the son of William and Julia Reid. He was educated in the local public schools and attended Hanes Memorial CME Church. On March 8, 1946, he entered the U.S. Navy and after his release, he moved to Atlantic City, where he later became a cook at Haddon Hall Hotel, now Resorts International, for many years. When his health failed, he moved to Winston-Salem to live with his sister. He is survived by his nine children, William, Regina, Althea, LaSalle, Sandra, Felicia, Sabrina, Marvin and Kimberly; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; three sisters, Margaret Reid, Elizabeth McCollum and Nellie Woods; a niece, Sherry Dooley; a nephew, Darius McCollum; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Russell Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. L.S. Werts officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. SNOW

STATE ROAD - Mr. Clyde Columbus Snow, 81, of Ambrose Creek Road passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital. He was a very special dad and will be missed dearly. Mr. Snow was born Aug. 24, 1920, in Surry County to Ples and Roseanne Butcher Snow. Mr. Snow was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was retired from Elkin Furniture. He attended State Road Pentecostal Holiness Church and Central Full Gospel Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dessie Gladys Snow; a son, William Thomas Jr., three brothers, Edward Snow, Roger Snow and Reaves Snow; and a sister, Hazel Widner. Survivors include his son, Jerry Snow of Dalton, Ohio; six daughters, Fay and Gary Norman of Elkin, Ann and Bobby Bauguess of State Road, Nancy Key, and Irene and Hayden Billings, all of Elkin, Mary Ann and Larry Bates of State Road, and Betty and O'Neal Carter of Mount Airy; a brother and sister-in-law, J.P. and Betty Snow of State Road; two sisters, Blanche Gentry of State Road and Mae Hodge of Winston-Salem; a nephew, Tony Snow of State Road; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Hodges Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gary Tatum, the Rev. Vernon Ball and Minister Betty Carter. Burial will follow at Little Richmond Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. SNOW

Mr. Lawrence P. "Sonny" Snow, 77, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Forsyth County to the late Ernest M. and Bertie Davis Snow. Mr. Snow was a member of Woodland Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Ambassador's Sunday School Class. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation after 41 years of service. He served in the Third Army during World War II under Gen. George Patton from May 1, 1943, until Nov. 4, 1945, and was awarded six medals and four Bronze Stars. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia S. Dudley. Survivors include his wife, Rachel Landreth Snow of the home, whom he married April 25, 1959; three sisters, Frances Westmorland and husband Wade, Tiny Martin and husband Albert of Walkertown and Nancy Gosnell and husband Raymond of Winston-Salem; a brother, William Snow and wife Shirley of Winston-Salem; three stepdaughters, Shirley Snow and husband William of Winston-Salem, Bette Hege and husband Larry of Yadkinville and Carolyn Harrell and husband Michael of Villa Rica, Ga.; five stepgrandchildren, Teresa Wooten and husband Mike of Yadkinville, Jennifer Britton and husband Jamey of Hamptonville, Mike Kulanko and wife Kerri of Georgia and Ann Barnett and husband Tim of Winston-Salem; and six stepgreat-grandchildren, Seth Wooten, Bethany and Cody Britton, Tad and Ali Kulanko and Logan Mabe. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Tim Gammons, the Rev. Zeno Groce and the Rev. Dan Martin. Entombment will follow in Gardens of Memory Mausoleum with military honors by VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Snow. STEELE

ADVANCE - Miss Alice Louise Steele, 51, formerly of Advance, died Dec. 18, 2001, at the Brian Center in Salisbury after an ex-tended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alice and John Q. Steele. She is survived by two brothers, John Q. Steele Jr. of Mocksville and Terry Steele of Advance; and two sisters, Florence Simmons of Mocksville and Dorothy Barker of Advance. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Graham Funeral Home. Minister Alan Brown will officiate. Burial will follow in Redland Church of Christ cemetery. THOMPSON

STATE ROAD - Mrs. Hazel Harris Thompson, 72, of Mount Hope Trail, passed away, Dec. 20, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Thompson was born Aug. 7, 1929, in Wilkes County to James and Idusta Burcham Harris. Mrs. Thompson was a homemaker and was a member of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Thompson; four sisters; and three brothers. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Patricia Thompson of Mocksville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robin and Mike Walker of Boomer and Ramona and Greg Pardue of State Road; two sisters, Grace Mathis of Elkin and Florence Ferguson of Hagerstown, Md.; and three grandchildren, Alicia Thompson, Emma Pardue and Calvin Pardue. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church by the Rev. Vernon Ball. Burial will follow at Crestwood Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Thompson will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 Friday evening at Hodges Funeral Home in Elkin. TODD

Mr. Daniel Drummond Todd Sr., of 1906 Short St. passed away Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. He was a native of Spartanburg, S.C., and was a retired employee of R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. and Hanes Mall. Mr. Todd was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and former Sunday-school teacher. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Carolyn W. Coleman-Todd of the home; a daughter, Dorothy T. Brown of Winston-Salem; two sons, Daniel Todd Jr. of Winston-Salem, and James D. Todd of Sanford; a stepson, Norman (Susan) Cole-man of Winston-Salem; 11 grand-children; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Mars Hill Baptist Church, where the Rev. K.E. Lilly will officiate. Interment will follow in Evergreen cemetery. The family will receive friends 30 minutes before the services from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. TOLLEY

Mr. William Edward Tolley, 77, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born in Forsyth County Feb. 2, 1924, to John L. and Cossie Leftwich Tolley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European, Asiatic and Pacific theaters during World War II. Mr. Tolley earned a Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooter Badge and Bronze Battle Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters. He is survived by his wife, Lola S. Tolley; a daughter, Kathy Lynn Baity of Yadkinville; a son, William E. Tolley Jr. of Kernersville; four grandchildren, Travis and Jeramie Baity, William E. Tolley III and Matthew Tolley; three great-grandchildren, Justus and Jacob Baity and Alisha Tolley; a sister-in-law, Isabell Tolley; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel, con-ducted by the Rev. Arnett Harris. Burial will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. TRIVETTE

GREENSBORO - Miss Edith Irene Trivette, 91, formerly of Winston-Salem, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Friends Homes at Guilford. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Winston-Salem Friends Meeting, 3151 Reynolda Road, Winston-Salem. Burial will be in New Garden cemetery, Greensboro, after the memorial service. Miss Trivette was a member of Winston-Salem Friends Meeting since birth. Her family was instrumental in organizing and beginning the church. Her parents, the Rev. John C. Trivette and Cleo Brendle Trivette preceded her in death. Miss Trivette was a retired school-teacher with the Guilford County school system, with 40 years of service. She is survived by her nephews and nieces, James Trivette and Samuel Trivette of Juneau, Alaska, Susan Trivette of Anchorage, Alaska, Russell Harwood of Tampa, Fla. and Nancy Martin of Holden Beach. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, at the church, before the service. VESTAL

YADKINIVLLE - Eula Winters Vestal, 88, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Willowbrook Health Care Center in Yadkinville. She was born Dec. 11, 1913, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to the late Wesley F. and Iva Carlton Winters. Mrs. Vestal was a homemaker and also retired from Hoots Memorial Hospital in the dietary depart-ment. She was a member of Mitchell's Chapel United Meth-odist Church where she attended faithfully as long as her health permitted. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Vestal was preceded in death by three brothers, Bernis, Fred and Clifford Winters; and a grandson, Danny Vestal Nance, on June 19, 1966. Survivors include her husband, Herbert Lee Vestal. On Dec. 24, 2001 they would have celebrated 69 years of marriage. To this blessed marriage, four daughters were born: Geraldine V. Nance and husband Lawrence of Boonville: Libby V. Tuttle and husband Bob of Winston Salem; Linda V. Johnson and husband Bill of Boonville; and Reta V. Vestal and husband Ronnie of Yadkinville. She is also survived by grand-children David Nance and wife Robin of Boonville, Marcia Johnson of Lewisville, Kevin Raby of Winston Salem, Susan Raby of Kernersville, Michael Johnson and wife Renee of Boonville, Lisa Moncus and husband Jeff of State Road and Wendy Rockett and husband George of East Bend; and great-grandchildren Daniel Nance, Morgan Johnson, Hunter and Katie Moncus and Landon Rockett. Also surviving are a sister and brother-in-law, Mae W. and Hubert Bryant of Boonville; sisters-in-law Margaret V. Winters and Sadie H. Speer; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Mitchell's Chapel United Methodist Church, Center Road, Boonville, with the Rev. Tim Starbuck, the Rev. Dana Wooten and the Rev. Tommy Vestal officiating. Mrs. Vestal will lie in state 30 minutes before the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Gentry Family Funeral Service, Highway 601 N., Yadkinville. MAYODAN - Mr. Johnny Reid Willard, 39, of 125 Long St., formerly of 1900 04 W. Academy St., Madison, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Duke University Medical Center. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Mayodan Municipal cemetery. Mr. Willard was born in Surry County. He was a 1980 graduate of North Stokes High School and was employed with McMichael Mills Inc. Survivors include his mother, Louise Wilson Yates of Westfield; brothers Gabe Willard Jr. and wife Treva of Westfield, Mark Wilson Willard and wife Connie of Madison and Randy Willard and wife Tammy of Kernersville; half brothers Junior Ray Wilson and wife Teresa, Ronnie Wilson and David Greg Wilson; sisters Carolyn Richardson and husband Willie and Barbara Dalton, all of Walnut Cove, and Betty Poff and husband Rick of Mayodan; and several nieces, nephews and many friends. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Colonial Funeral Home.

DENTON - Phoebe Loretta Adams Adams, 69, of 268 Cedar Springs Road, Lexington, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at High Point Regional Hospital after a brief illness. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Fairview United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alvin Pope officiating. Interment will be held in Cedar Springs cemetery. Mrs. Adams was born May 3, 1932, in Davidson County to Robert Adams and Dora Carrick Adams. She was an active member of Fairview United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Preston Adams. Surviving are her husband, Billy Adams of Denton; her sons, Steve Adams of Denton, Kevin Adams of High Point and Laurie Adams of Denton; a daughter, Alecia Evans of New York; brothers Hoyt Adams of Thomasville, R.Q. Adams, Kelton Adams and Austin Adams, all of Denton; sisters, Viola Owen, Yvonne Snider and Karen Woods, all of Denton; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. NORTH WILKESBORO - Mrs. Betty Ruth Byers Ashley, 68, of Welcome Home Church Road, North Wilkesboro, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at 1 p.m. at Welcome Home Baptist Church with the Rev. J. E. Owens and the Rev. Paul Hugger officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Entombment will be at Scenic Memorial Gardens Mausoleum. Mrs. Ashley was born Dec. 18, 1933, in Wilkes County to Oren Zeak and Nora Bumgarner Byers. After retiring from Farmers Home Administration, she worked in the family business, C & J L-P Gas Co. Mrs. Ashley volunteered at Wilkes Regional Medical Center. She was a member of the Tory Oak Twirlers and Welcome Home Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Ravaughn Ashley of the home; two sons, Randy Ashley and Lyn Ashley, both of North Wilkesboro; a sister, Edith Aheron of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren,Ryan Ashley, Travis Ashley, Tyler Ashley, Veronica Ashley, and Austin Ashley, all of North Wilkesboro. KING - Ophelia Janette (Pete) Ashley, 83, formerly of Petree Road in Winston-Salem, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Village Care of King. She was born Jan. 31, 1918, in Forsyth County to Oscar A. and Rosa Vogler Wrights. Mrs. Ashley was a member of Boyers Chapel Church of Christ in Clemmons. Preceding her in death were her husband, Ralph W. Ashley Sr., in 1963 and her son, Ralph W. Ashley Jr., in 2000. She was also preceded by four sisters, Maude Pegram, Lavanche Graham, Josephine Barber and Margaret Denton and four brothers, Ralph and Marion Wrights and Clyde and John Holder. Surviving are a daughter, Jane Allen and husband Stanley; two granddaughters, Denise Allen and Melissa (Keith) Blakley; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Allen and Austin Blakley, all of Tobaccoville; four sisters, Jewell Snyder and Dorothy Brandon, both of Clemmons, Betty (Glenn) Graham and Ann (Clifford) Ketchie, both of Salisbury; a brother, Frank (Helen) Wrights of Salisbury; a special sister-in-law and nephew, Ann Hartman and Danny Hartman of Advance. Graveside services will be held Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Boyers Chapel Church of Christ cemetery in Clemmons with Carl Rothrock, minister officiating. BENSON

Ms. Barbara Oneida Benson, 74, of 801 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Apt. 6-C, passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Jan. 4, 1927, in Winston-Salem to the late Nathaniel David Benson and the late Lora Bell Stokes Benson. She was a graduate of Atkins High School, Class of 1944, attended Winston-Salem Teachers College (now Winston-Salem State University) and was graduate of Star Stenographic School, Class of 1947. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church for more than 60 years where she was a member of the Sarah Missionary Group, Hattie File Club, Baptist Training Union, Chancel Choir, Flower Club, Dramatics Club, Sunday Church School, Boy Scout/Girl Scout Committee and Troop Leader, Vacation Bible School, Food Service Committee and was organizer/director of the Children's Choir. In the community, she was the musician for the Rowan Sunday School Convention, musician for Women's Auxiliary of the state convention, played for various churches in the community including Union Chapel Baptist Church for 16 years. She was a Crisis Control volunteer, a member of the West 24th Street Flower Club and organized Happy Campers Choir of Sunrise Towers. She was retired from Family Services with 23 years of service as a child-care teacher's assistant. She is survived by two sons, Richard (Linda Hailey) Benson and Wayne Benson of Winston-Salem; several cousins, including Helen S. Pollard, Mary B. Johnson, Flora Golden, Octavia L. Acker, the Freeman, Douglas and Raymond Crowder families and a number of other extended family members and friends. A service in her memory will be held at noon Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at the Mount Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Serenus T. Churn officiating. The family visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. today at the Mount Zion Baptist Church. Her remains may be viewed Sunday at Russell Funeral Home and at the visitation at the church. The family may be contacted at the home of Helen S. Gibbs, 2607 N. Cherry St. (Russell)
