Funeral services for Ms. Nelia Davis, 94, who passed Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, from the Bethania AME Zion Church in Old Town. The Rev. Johnnie Ruffin will officiate. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. at the church. Arrangements are entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home. (Gilmore)

DEBORD

INDEPENDENCE, Va. - Dr. John William "Bill" DeBord, 46, of Independence, Va., passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at Smyth County, Va., Community Hospital in Marion, Va. He was born May 28, 1955, in Smyth County, the Rich Valley Community, to Raymond Lee and Lee Etta Buchanan DeBord. He was co-owner of Twin Oaks Veterinary Hospital in Sparta. He graduated from Rich Valley High School and was salutatorian of his class. He attended Emory & Henry College and University of Georgia and the College of Veterinary Medicine in Athens, Ga. He was preceded in death by his father and a son, Stephen Michael DeBord. Surviving are his wife, Ann Katherine Watson DeBord; two sons, Willie DeBord and Danny DeBord, both of the home; his mother, Lee Etta Buchanan DeBord of Rich Valley, Va.; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Raymond Lee DeBord of Rich Valley, Va., and Jeffrey Blake and Anna Leigh DeBord of Saltville, Va., and several nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and an uncle also survive. The body will be taken to Locust Grove Presbyterian Church in Rich Valley, Va., at 2 p.m. today where the family will receive friends for an hour. Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. at the Ridgedale United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Rich Cardot and the Rev. Harold E. Morgan III officiating. Flowers will be graciously accepted or memorial contributions may be made to your local rescue squad or local volunteer fire department. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Independence, Va., is in charge of arrangements.

ELLEDGE

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Charlie Wayne Elledge, 87, formerly of Hays, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home. Mr. Elledge was born Oct. 16, 1914, in Wilkes County to Abernathy N. Elledge and Martha Jane Hall Elledge. He was a member of Maple Grove Baptist Church and a veteran of World War II. Mr. Elledge was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Pendry Elledge; a brother, Ranson Elledge; and two sisters, Mrs. Doshie Brooks and Mrs. Ada Rhoades. Surviving are several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Miller Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Luther Chambers and the Rev. Ted Combs officiating. Entombment will be in Mountlawn Memorial Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Health Education, 110 Jefferson St., North Wilkesboro, NC 28659 or to the donor's choice.

HAYWORTH

HIGH POINT - Mr. G. Kenneth Hayworth, 74, of 1526 N. Old Greensboro Road died Saturday in High Point Regional Hospital of an incurable and rare ailment, progressive supranuclear palsy. He was ill for 11 years and critical for three weeks. He was born April 24, 1927, in Davidson County, the son of Joseph Cletus Hayworth and Ethel Moore Hayworth. He retired in 1989 from Thayer Coggins and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church and a member of the Willing Workers Sunday school class at the church. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter and a sister, Maxine Hayworth Tew. He was married Oct. 1, 1948, to Martha Lou Payne Hayworth for 53 years, who survives of the home. Also surviving are three sons, G. Keith Hayworth and wife Debbie of Rock Hill, S.C., Joseph Clyde Hayworth and wife Angie, and Lindley "Lin" B. Hayworth and wife Brenda, both of High Point; a sister, Mrs. Cynthia Craver of High Point; a brother, Baxter Hayworth of High Point; eight grandchildren, Kelly, Amy, Natlie, Anna, Emma, Jessie, Trent and Baxter. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jacqueline Elliott, the Rev. Bill Dingus and the Rev. Ardis Payne officiating. The family will be at J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville from 7 to 9 p.m. today and other times at the home. Memorials may be directed to Mount Pleasant cemetery Fund, 6729 Old Greensboro Road, Thomasville, NC 27360. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery.

PITTS

Mrs. Roxanna Willis Pitts, 89, formerly of 1911 E. 18th St., passed away Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001, at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. She was a native of Chester, S.C., and came to Winston-Salem at an early age with her mother, Mary W. Morrow. She attended the local public schools. She graduated from LaMae Beauty Culture School during the time she was employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., where she was employed for years in a variety of challenging positions. At an early age, she became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where she had been honored for more than 50 years of membership. She had served in a variety of positions at Shiloh, which include the Deaconess Ministry, Nominating Committee, Presidents' Ministry and president of the Sheepfold Ministry. She served in a variety of positions in the Forsyth County Missionary Union as well as the president. She has served in many positions of North Carolina Women's Convention, Loft Carey Convention and the National Baptist Convention. She was honored by the local, state and national organizations for her contribution to the Beauty Cultural Association. In the community, Roxanna has served as president of Church Women United, president of the local Beauty Cultural Association, treasurer of the local chapter of National Women of Achievement, president of the Kate B. Reynolds Hospital Auxiliary, parliamentarian, treasurer and president of Les Bonne Filles Club, precinct worker of the Democratic Party, member of the NAACP and National Council of Negro Women and the Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Petatis Aux. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Evelyn Sartin. She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Manderline (Robert) Scales; two grandchildren, Albert Scales and Tyrone (Maude Eva) Willis; two great-grandchildren, Porsche' Jones and Misha M. Scales; a son-in-law, John Sartin; three goddaughters, Juanita P. Williams, Clara Ellis and Savannah (Ernest) Johnson and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, from the Shiloh Baptist Church with Dr. Paul A. Lowe Jr. officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. The family visitation will be from 12:30 to 1 p.m. Monday at the church. (Russell)

REID

Blanche Elizabeth Reid, 90, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at her residence. Mrs. Reid was born July 14, 1911, in Forsyth County to Edward and Emma Shoaf Reid. She was a charter member of Hopewell Moravian Church and was retired from S.H. Kress Co. Mrs. Reid was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Elva, and a brother-in-law, C.E. Snyder. Surviving are a niece, Shelby S. Fishel and her husband Lloyd; two great-nephews, Aubrey S. Fishel and his wife Mona, and Bryan L. Fishel; a great-niece, Sherri F. Bogue and her husband Glenn, and their children Austin and Erika Bogue. Many cousins and other relatives and friends also survive. A funeral service will be held Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at 2:00 p.m. at Hopewell Moravian Church by the Rev. Jeff Carter. Interment will follow in the church graveyard. RICHARDS

Dr. Claud Henry Richards Jr., a beloved friend to many and a dedicated teacher and colleague, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 20, 2001. Dr. Richards was born in Forth Worth, Texas, on Jan. 7, 1917, to Claud Henry Richards Sr. and Myrtle Lee Hall Richards. He received his B.A. from Texas Christian University and his M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University. Dr. Richards began teaching at Wake Forest in 1952, when the university was in the town of Wake Forest. In 1956, he became the founding chairman of the new politics department on the university's Winston-Salem campus. He was a longtime resident of Salemtowne Retirement Community, where he often used his beautiful tenor voice to inspire the residents. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he was elder emeritus, sang in the church choir and taught a Sunday school class. Dr. Richards became a soloist in Duke Chapel while a student and a teacher there. Surviving are several cousins and a host of devoted friends. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23 at First Christian Church with the Rev. James P. Cobb officiating. Inurnment will take place in Forth Worth at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Christian Church Choir Fund, 2320 Country Club Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104.

ROYAL

NORTH WILKESBORO - Mr. Golden Royal, 82, of Tabernacle Road, North Wilkesboro, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2001, at Britthaven Nursing Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Harvest Time Ministries with the Rev. Gene Shepherd, the Rev. Bud Shepherd and the Rev. Dean Rector officiating. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Mountlawn Memorial Park. Mr. Royal was born Feb. 10, 1919, in Wilkes County to John T. and Mary Cleary Royal. He was retired from Tyson Foods and was a member at Harvest Time Ministries. He is survived by his wife, Marie Wagoner Royal of the home; two daughters, Edith Burgess of Wilkesboro and Shelia Blevins of Bassett, Va.; a son, Larry J. Royal of Purlear; a sister, Fairy Taylor of Laurel Springs; a brother, Charlie Glenn Royal of Wilkesboro; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will be at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Harvest Time Ministries, 501 C St., North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.

WHITE

MOCKSVILLE -Mrs. Patricia Ann Altman White, 56, of Grannaman Drive died late Friday night, Dec. 21, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Ijames Crossroads Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Faust, pastor officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family request memorials be considered for the cemetery fund of Ijames Crossroads Baptist Church, c/o Mr. Joe Gobble, 728 Sheffield Road, Mocksville, NC 27028. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services Sunday. Mrs. White was born in Johnsonville, S.C., March 9, 1945, to the late Thomas and Ann Evans Altman and along with her husband, managed the W.G. White and Co. in Winston-Salem. She had previously been with WonderKnit and Crescent EMC. She was a member of Ijames Crossroads Baptist Church where she sang in the church choir and was a teacher in the children's department. She was very instrumental in the organizing and publishing of the church pictorial directory at Ijames Church. Survivors include her husband, Doug White of the home; a daughter, Robin Renee White of Mocksville, a grandson, Lewie Charles Favre and a granddaughter, Megan Maryanne Favre; three sisters, Movita Matthews of Florence, S.C., Gail Marlowe and Connie Altman, both of Johnsonville, S.C., and her stepmother, Mary Altman of Johnsonville, S.C. Eaton Funeral Home is serving the family of Mrs. White.

WIDENER

Mr. James Rowland Widener, 62, died Saturday Dec. 22, 2001, at the Kirkwood House in Lenoir. He was born Oct. 26, 1939, in Forsyth County to Robert Charles Roland Widener and Mary Alice Holden Widener. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Rachel Knight Widener of the home; two sons, Steven Rowland Widener and wife, Paula of Wake Forest and Johnny Dale Widener and wife, Karen of Connelly Springs; four grandchildren, Sarah, Alex and Adrienne Widener and Shannon Buckner; a brother, Homer Edward Widener of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 24, 2001, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with the Rev. Edgar Holden and the Rev. Benny Gibson officiating. Burial will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. BAITY

THOMASVILLE - Mr. Grover C. "Bud" Baity Jr., 80, a resident of Britthaven of Davidson Nursing Home and formerly of Duke Street, died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at the nursing home. He was born in Thomasville Sept. 16, 1921, a son of Grover C. Baity and Bessie Alford Baity and was a lifelong resident of Thomasville. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps. veteran of World War II. He was a former member of the Davidson County Civil Air Patrol and a licensed pilot. From 1947 to 1972, he was a co-owner of B&B Self Service and from 1972 to 1984 he was the owner and operator of Bud's Exxon on Fisher Ferry Street. He was a former member of Bethel United Methodist Church. On July 5, 1947, he was married to Miss Dorothy Lee Atwood, who died Sept. 20, 1996. Surviving are two sons, Virgil Dale Baity and wife Faye and Rick Baity and wife Bonnie, all of Thomasville; and a sister, Mrs. Lindsay (Lillian) Leonard of Thomasville. Also surviving are four grand-children, Braxton Baity, Brian Baity, Meredith Baity and Amanda Baity. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Sat-urday at J.C. Green & Sons Chapel by Dr. Joe Coltrane. Burial will be in Holly Hill Memorial Park cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and other times at the home of a son, Virgil Dale Baity, 110 Bowers Road in Pleasant Acres. Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association, Triad North Carolina Chapter, 200 N. Cherry St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101; or the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27407.

BURRELL

Mr. James Moyer Burrell, formerly of 1804 Shadymount Ave., departed this life Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after a period of illness. He was born Nov. 4, 1914, in Buffalo Ridge, Va., to the late James Russell and Lula Ross Burrell. He was a retiree of Bethlehem Steel Co. after more than 30 years of service. Mr. Burrell formerly attended Cleveland Avenue Christian Disciple Church, where he served as an elder. He later joined Carver Road Church of Christ. Mr. Burrell held Masonic affiliations with the E.W. Peck Lodge No. 8 PHA, the Consistory and Jerusalem Temple No. 4, A.E.A.O.N.M.S. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Hazel Little Burrell; a son, George Elmo Burrell; and a daughter, Mary Louise Skinner. He was a man who was loved by many, loved life and lived every moment of it. "Daddy," "Pop Pop," "Da," "Uncle James" will be greatly missed by both family and friends. He is survived by two daughters, Loretta B. (William S.) Mason of Los Angeles, Calif., and Eleanor B. Mussa of Baltimore, Md.; two sons, Walter B. (Ringoldia) Burrell of Baltimore, Md., and Warren M. (Virginia) Burrell, Winston-Salem; 11 grandchildren; 11 great-grand-children; three sisters-in law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Satur-day, Dec. 15, 2001, at the Carver Road Church of Christ. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. (Hooper)

GIBSONVILLE - Collie Marie Souther Coleman, 87, of Apple-Wyrick Road died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Guilford Health Care Center. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Brown Wesleyan Church, Gibsonville, with the Rev. Larry Pope officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. She was born Feb. 4, 1914, in Wilkes County to the late Naomi Hollar Souther and Arthur Turner Souther. Collie was a member of Brown Wesleyan Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Parks G. Coleman; a grandson, Larry Frank Gerringer II; brothers Preston, Parks, Anders and Garland Souther; and sisters Myrtle Souther Taylor and Eva Souther Hutchinson. Collie is survived by her daughters, Rachel Coleman McBeath (Bob) of Florida, Joan Coleman Smith (Larry) of Greensboro and Jackie Coleman Gerringer (Larry) of Gibsonville; five grandchildren, Frank Fogle (Judy) of Davidson, Lynne Smith Bush (Tim) of Richmond, Va., Jo Smith Short (Fred) of Greensboro, Anna Gerringer Amoriello (Scott) and June Gerringer-Deatherage (David) of Gibsonville; and great-grandchildren Allyson Jones, Tiffany Short, Denton Fogle, Cole, Bryce and Mitch Amoriello, and Brock, Blake and Bayleigh Deatherage. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home, N. Mrs. Louise Ferree Cook, 91, died Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, eight days before her 92nd birthday at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Chapel. The interment will be at Green Hill cemetery. She was retired from Greensboro Manufacturing, was a member of Trinity Chapel and attended Calvary Temple in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew T. "Jack" Cook. Surviving are her son, G.T. "Tom" Cook and wife Billie Jean of Fort Orange, Fla.; two daughters, Mary Cook Jones and husband Jimmy of Winston-Salem and Ruth Cook Peeler of Hobe Sound, Fla.; a son, David L. Cook and wife Eula of Randleman; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. before the service Saturday at the funeral home.

DAVIS

Ms. Julia Davis, 79, of 4055 Lenora Drive and formerly of 934 Mock St. passed away Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at her residence after a period of illness. She was born Aug. 7, 1922, in Columbia, Richland County, S.C., to the late Pearl Bright Davis and Dock Davis Sr. Ms. Davis was a devoted homemaker and a member of United Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church where she was a deaconess and an altar mother. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Henry Davis; and a sister, Frances Boyd. She is survived by three sons, Joseph (Valeria) Davis of Winston-Salem, Harrison (Linda) Davis of Kernersville and James W. (Barbara) Dixon of Greensboro; a devoted daughter and caregiver, Pearl (James) Stewart of Winston-Salem; three brothers, Bishop Dock (Betty) Davis Jr. of Winston-Salem, Harrison (Bernice) Davis of Baltimore, Md., and William Davis of Columbia, S.C.; four sisters, Alberta Boyd of Hartford, Conn., Nancy Richardson, Marie Dixon and Elizabeth Griffin (a devoted sister and caregiver), all of Winston-Salem; a dear grandson, James Robert Stewart Jr. of the home; a special niece, Brenda Moore of Greensboro; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be at 12 noon Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at the United Cornerstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. J. Ray Butler officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. ELKIN - Mrs. Sherry Kay Lyda Enloe, 62, of Lyles Street passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, 2001, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. Mrs. Enloe was born Sept. 26, 1939, in Gaston County to O.J and Aline Braswell Lyda. Mrs. Enloe was retired from the Veterans Administration and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, the Rev. Johnny Enloe of the home; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sherry Dawn (Averett) Thomas of South Boston, Va., and Johnna Michelle (Bob) Phillips of Greensboro; her mother and father, O.J. and Aline Lyda; two brothers, Jim Lyda of Gastonia and Bill Lyda of Lincolnton; a sister, Nancy Best of High Point; and a grandchild, Lauren Michelle Phillips of Greensboro. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2001, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church by Dr. Don Stephens. A graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. at Stony Ridge Baptist Church cemetery in Westfield. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 Friday evening at Hodges Funeral Home. LONG

Mr. Edgar Edward Long, 81, of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2001, at his home. He was born Jan. 4, 1920, in Forsyth County to Dewey R. and Ollie Fishel Long. Mr. Long was retired from McLean Trucking Co. with 30 years of service. He was a member of Advent Moravian Church, where he was an active member his entire life. He was also retired from the U.S. Army, having served in World War II, the Korean conflict and in the active reserves for a total of 35 years service to his country. Mr. Long was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 167 and the Oasis Tem-ple. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Billy F. Long. Surviving are his wife, Jane Hodgin Long of the home; two daughters, Ms. Karen D. Long of Greensboro and Mrs J. Camille Savopoulos and husband Davie of Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, E. Keith Long and wife Mary of Dover, Mass.; three grandchildren, Ben Lambeth, Andrew Lambeth and Kelly Long; two sisters, Mrs. Louise Long Pitts and Mrs. Nancy Myers; and two brothers, James R. Long and Cletus R. "Knotty" Long, all of Winston-Salem. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Advent Moravian Church, with the Rev. Tripp May officiating. Burial will follow in the church graveyard. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.
