SNOW

Mr. Lawrence P. "Sonny" Snow, 77, of Winston-Salem died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 31, 1924, in Forsyth County to the late Ernest M. and Bertie Davis Snow. Mr. Snow was a member of Woodland Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Ambassador's Sunday School Class. He retired from the N.C. Department of Transportation after 41 years of service. He served in the Third Army during World War II under Gen. George Patton from May 1, 1943, until Nov. 4, 1945, and was awarded six medals and four Bronze Stars. He was preceded in death by a sister, Cynthia S. Dudley. Survivors include his wife, Rachel Landreth Snow of the home, whom he married April 25, 1959; three sisters, Frances Westmorland and husband Wade, Tiny Martin and husband Albert of Walkertown, and Nancy Gosnell and husband Raymond of Winston-Salem; a brother, William Snow and wife Shirley of Winston-Salem; three stepdaughters, Shirley Snow and husband William of Winston-Salem, Betty Hege and husband Larry of Yadkinville, and Carolyn Harrell and husband Michael of Villa Rica, Ga.; five stepgrandchildren, Teresa Wooten and husband Mike of Yadkinville, Jennifer Britton and husband Jamey of Hamptonville, Mike Kulanko and wife Rhonda, William Harrell and wife Kerri of Georgia, and Ann Barnett and husband Tim of Winston-Salem; and six stepgreat-grandchildren, Seth Wooten, Bethany and Cody Britton, Tad and Ali Kulanko and Logan Mabe. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Vogler & Sons Main Street Chapel by the Rev. Tim Gammons, the Rev. Zeno Groce and the Rev. Dan Martin. Entombment will follow in Gardens of Memory Mausoleum with military honors by VFW District 11 Memorial Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 4-A Oak Branch Drive, Greensboro, NC 27405; the Alzheimer's Association, Southern Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215; or Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church cemetery Fund, 4700 Old Walkertown Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105. The family would like to send a special thank you to Mr. Snow's caregivers, Marie McHone, Rebecca Griffin, Etta Lou Inman, Mary Jane Noah, Hattie Grubbs and Ann Snow-Barrett.

SNOW

Mr. Wayne Eugene Snow, 39, of Winston-Salem died early Friday morning, Dec. 21, 2001, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born July 28, 1962, in Forsyth County to Oliver Wayne and Marie Fallin Snow. Wayne got his Christmas wish of rejoining his parents in Heaven. To those who knew him, their lives will never be the same. Our loss is Heaven's gain, and to his family he was one of the greatest joys of their lives. He was formerly employed with Hensel Wood Products and was a member of Calvary Temple Church. Surviving are three sisters, Karen Snow and Darrell White of the home, Lynn and Tim Martin, Sharon and Larry Craver, all of Winston-Salem; two brothers, Ricky Allen and Ulysses "Peanut" Snow, both of Winston-Salem; a special friend, Mildred Williams; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel by the Rev. Mike Martin. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The family extends a special thanks to the Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C, S. South Stratford Rd., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

STAFFORD

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Nina Tuggle Stafford, 92, of Bradford Village West, died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at her residence. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2001, at Hanes-Lineberry, Pierce Chapel. Burial will follow at Bunker Hill United Methodist Church cemetery. Mrs. Stafford was a member of Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Roosevelt Stafford; a sister, Elsie Hutchins; and two brothers, Evis Tuggle and Noel Tuggle. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Edith Van Ness and husband David of Sanford, Fla., Mrs. Emma McNeill and husband Clyde of Kernersville, and Mrs. Bessie Winfree and husband Berchell "Jack" of Kernersville; a sister, Sudie Raynor of High Point; two brothers, Ausbie Tuggle and Clayton Tuggle, both of High Point; seven grandchildren, Michelle Rutherford, Tim Maxey, Ken Winfree, Doug Winfree, Beth Meinke, San Van Ness and Pat Van Ness; and six great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Bunker Hill Primitive Baptist Church, c/o John T. Lee, 2323 Wayne White Road, Pleasant Garden, NC 27313.

SWISHER

Mr. Leonard Ray Swisher, 64, of Winston-Salem died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born June 13, 1937, in Yadkin County to Jesse and Ellen Cook Swisher. Mr. Swisher was retired from Stroh's after 30 years of service. He was a member of Vernon Forest Baptist Church and a member of Teamsters Local 391. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Felts Swisher of the home; a daughter, Jackie Vann and husband Benjamin of Winston-Salem; a brother, Harvey Swisher of Yadkinville; a sister, Cynthia Ellis of Yadkinville; two grandchildren, Taylor and Lauren Vann; and several nieces. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Vernon Forest Baptist Church, with the Rev. Terry Coats officiating. Burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice & Palliative CareCenter, 1100-C S. Stratford Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

ALDRIDGE

Mrs. Margaret Shutt Aldridge, 88, formerly of Parkridge Circle in Winston-Salem, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001. She was born to the late Ralph Joseph and Pearlie Cordelia Thomas Shutt on Oct. 20, 1913, in Winston-Salem. Her husband, Frank Melton Aldridge Sr., precedes her in death. She was a lifelong resident of Forsyth County and was a member of Pine Grove United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Cordelia Allen of Winston-Salem; a son, Frank M. Aldridge, Jr. of Summerfield; four grandchildren, Frank M. Aldridge, III, Tara Aldridge, Matthew Aldridge and Melissa Allen; two brothers, R.J. Shutt Jr. and Richard Shutt. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the Pine Grove United Methodist Church cemetery. The Rev. Mike Talbert will officiate. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler's Main Street Chapel.

ANDERSON

MOUNT AIRY - Mr. William Junior Anderson, 74, of 228 Hilda Drive, Mount Airy, the husband of Mrs. Veneeda Love Anderson, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Anderson was born on Nov. 20, 1927, in Surry County, son of the late Dave and Rosie Smith Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a retired supervisor with Pike Electric Inc., a veteran of the U.S. Army and a member of Flat Rock Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Veneeda Love Anderson of the home; a daughter and son-in-law, Joy and the Rev. Dr. Mark Key of Charlotte; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Pam Anderson of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; five grandchildren and a brother and sister-in-law; Fred and Mary Jo Anderson of Rich Creek, Va. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at 11 a.m. at Flat Rock Baptist Church with services conducted by Dr. Jon Cawley with entombment held at Skyline Memory Gardens Mausoleum. The family will receive friends an hour before the service on Tuesday at Flat Rock Baptist. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Flat Rock Baptist Church, 1335 East Pine St., Mount Airy, NC. 27030 or to the donor's choice. Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy will be assisting the Anderson family.

ARMSTRONG

Mrs. Virginia Smith Armstrong, 83, of Pfafftown, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Aug. 20, 1918, in Montgomery County, Va., to Jack and Molly Mussman Smith. Mrs. Armstrong retired from Pell Care Nursing Home with 15 years of service. Preceding her in death were her husband, William Rufus Armstrong and a son, Jimmy Smith. Surviving are two sons, Wesley Armstrong of Pfafftown and John Armstrong of Winston-Salem; three daughters, Sylvia Armstrong of Pfafftown, Carolyn Burns of Lewisville, and Gracy Alexander of Walnut Cove; 15 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, in Woodland cemetery by Pastor Leon Wishon. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

BATEMAN

MIDWAY - Mr. Roger Don Bateman, 61, passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at his home leaving us with many treasured memories. He was a familiar face at both Baptist and Forsyth hospitals, where he based his business, Commercial Installers. He was a member of the Gold Wing Riders Association. He was also involved in many civic organizations. Don was a loving husband to Jo Ann Bateman, dedicated father to Rena Bateman, Van Bateman, Thad Bateman and Donna Redd and a wonderful PaPa to Paige and Ashton Redd. He will also be missed by his mother, Hope Mills Bateman; a brother, Robert Bateman; four sisters, Helen Nelson, Aleen Gordon, Nelda Jester and Mary Alice Bennett; a son-in-law, Greg Redd; two special friends, Dee Duggins and Tami Moore, their children and many friends and family whose lives he touched. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Harvey Bateman and a brother, Jake Bateman. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, and burial will follow in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

CHAPPELL

DOBSON - Mr. Noah Luther Chappell, 67, of 204 Windsor Park Drive, Dobson, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. He was born in Surry County on April 18, 1934, to the late William Arthur and Levora Atkins Chappell. Mr. Chappell formerly owned and operated the Luther Chappell Insurance Agency in Dobson and attended the Dobson United Methodist Church. Mr. Chappell also served his country in the U.S. Army. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Vanhoy Chappell. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Tim McCart, of High Point; two step-grandchildren, Shawn and Shawnee McCart, both of Greensboro; a sister and brother-in-law, Ailene and Drake Pardue, of Boonville; a nephew, David and wife, Donna, Pardue of Clemmons; two great-nephews, Alex and Adam Pardue, and a special friend, Janice Barker, of Dobson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at the Dobson United Methodist Church with burial in the Dobson City cemetery. The family will receive friends at Davis & Sons Funeral Home in Dobson from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Heart Disease Research Foundation National Office, 50 Court St., 306-A, Brooklyn, N.Y. 11201-4801 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

CUNNINGHAM

YADKINVILLE - The Rev. Donald Sanford Cunningham, 67, of Yadkinville died Sunday, Dec. 30, 2001, at Forsyth Medical Center. The Rev. Cunningham's funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at Harmony Grove Friends Meeting. The family will receive friends at the church from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Gentry Family Funeral Service Yadkinville Chapel is assisting the family.

DURHAM

Mrs. Rebecca Teague Durham, 84, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at the Sticht Center at the N.C. Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Durham was born Oct. 7, 1917, in Forsyth County to Othor Monroe Teague Sr. and Bertie Livengood Teague. She was a lifelong member of Home Moravian Church and a member of the Women's Fellowship. Mrs. Durham was preceded in death by her loving husband, George W. Durham Jr. and infant sister. She is survived by two sons, George W. Durham III and wife, Jane, of Decatur, Ala., and Richard M. Durham and wife, Tina, of Lewisville; along with four grandchildren, George W. Durham IV and Jon Alexander Durham, both of Nashville, Tenn., Eric Patrick Durham and Sarah Kathryn Durham of Lewisville; along with several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends and family from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. the day of the funeral at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. A 2 p.m. graveside service will be conducted Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Salem cemetery with the Rev. Lehoma B. Goode and Dr. Robert E. Sawyer officiating. Memorials may be made to Home Moravian Church, 529 S. Church St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

ELLEDGE

Mrs. Ruth Lance Adams Elledge passed away Dec. 30, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Henderson County to the late Rev. and Mrs. M.H.R. Lance. Mrs. Elledge was employed by Baptist Hospital for 15 years and retired from City Nursing Service. She was a member of Mount Carmel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Elledge was married to James Bruce Elledge in 1960. Two sisters and a brother preceded her in death. In addition to her husband she is survived by a devoted niece, Mrs. Viola Moorefield of Winston-Salem and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2001, at Mount Carmel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Eller officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Memorials may be made to Mount Carmel United Methodist Church, 4265 Ebert Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel is serving the Elledge family.

GRANT

MOCKSVILLE - Mrs. Annie Lois Furches Grant, of South Salisbury Street died early Sunday morning at her home. Funeral services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Eaton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Furches and the Rev. Charles Turner officiating. Visitation will be at the funeral home immediately following the service Wednesday. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Rose cemetery. The family requests memorials be considered for the Hospice of Davie County, P.O. Box 848, Mocksville, NC 27028. Mrs. Grant was born in Davie County to the late John David and Cornelia Judson James Furches and was a retired accountant with REA (Energy United) with 30 years of service. She helped reorganize the hospital auxiliary of Davie County Hospital and was its president for many years. Mrs. Grant was a member of the Mocksville Women's Club and the Mocksville Garden Club. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mocksville. She was preceded in death by her husband, A.T. Grant Jr., and also by four brothers and a sister, Robert Furches, Fred Furches, Will Furches, Virginia Molinari and J.D. Furches. Surviving is a daughter, Helen Jordan, of Mocksville; two grandchildren, Monica Jordan Hill, of Wilmington and Grant Miller Jordan of Mocksville; a great-granddaughter, Gloria Denice Hill; three sisters, Sarah Louise Parker and Vashti Sugg, both of Greensboro, and Julia James of Fredericksburg, Va. The family of Mrs. Grant would like to express their appreciation to Andrea Sissy Jones and Betty Julian for all their love and devotion.

JOHNSEN

LaVonne Marie Johnsen, 79, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at Forsyth Memorial Center. She was born March 17, 1922, in Le Mars, Iowa, to the late Dick and Ann Frerichs. She was a member of King of Glory Lutheran Church in Clemmons. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, E.B. Johnsen. Vonnie was an avid golfer for many years at Tanglewood and enjoyed all the special times with her many friends and family. She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Essic, and husband Aaron Essic of Winston-Salem and a son, James W. Johnsen, and wife Glenna of Clemmons. Also surviving are six grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, Charlie Essic and wife Glenda of Winston-Salem, Lisa Allen and husband Rodney of Lexington, Jeff Johnsen and wife Kristi of Valdese, Greg Johnsen of Winston-Salem, Doug Johnsen and wife Jackie of Lewisville and Eric Johnsen of Raleigh. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 31, 2001, at Vogler's Clemmons Chapel by the Rev. Phillip Squire and eulogy by the Rev. Jeffrey W. Johnsen. Entombment will be in Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Monday at Vogler's. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to King of Glory Builders Fund, 2580 Old Glory Road, Clemmons, NC 27012.

JONES

Mrs. Mary Louise "Lou" Jones, 82, of 4130 Aquadale Lane, died Sunday at Forsyth Medical Center. Mrs. Jones was born March 24, 1919, in Forsyth County to Albert E. and Naomi Deal Nifong. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Mount Tabor United Methodist Church by Dr. Kenneth Carter. Interment will follow at Forsyth Memorial Park cemetery. Mrs. Jones lived all of her life in Forsyth County and was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church and the Fellowship Bible Class. She retired from Wachovia Bank and Trust Co. after 32 years of service. Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by two brothers, Reece Nifong and Phillip Nifong and a sister, Kathryn Nifong Kestler. Survivors include her husband, Ira W. Jones, of the home; two children, Carolyn Woods and husband, Jeff, of Winston-Salem, Norman Jones and wife, Nancy, of Lexington; grandchildren, Sarah Woods of Cary, David Woods of Winston-Salem, Jason, Ben and Elizabeth Glover of Lexington; a sister, Grace Kimel, and a sister-in-law, Charlotte Nifong, both of Winston-Salem. The family request in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Good Child Scholarship Fund of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Vogler and Sons Reynolda Road Chapel.

MARTIN

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Mary Hall Martin, 76, of Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Lewis Avent Martin, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001, at the Surry Community Nursing Center in Mount Airy. Mrs. Martin was born Oct. 15, 1925, in Surry County to the late Thomas Leonard and Doris Agnes Monday Hall. She was retired from Sprint/Centel as a phone operator and was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Roger Lynch of King, Pam and Hank Miller of Palm Coast, Fla., and Lynn and Junior Seivers of Pilot Mountain; three sons and daughters-in-law, George Martin of Mountain Home, Idaho, Tom and Marie Martin of Topsail Beach and Richard and Debbie Martin of Mount Airy; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Barbara Hall, of Mount Airy, and three brothers, Carroll and Violet Hall of Cana, Va., Gary and Lou Hall of Mount Airy and Phil and Jenny Hall of Mount Airy. The funeral service will be held on Monday, Dec. 31, 2001 at 11 a.m. at Holy Angel Catholic Church, conducted by Father Erik Kowalski, with burial to follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will be meeting at the home of her sister, Barbara Hall, 149 Jackson St., Mount Airy, N.C. Moody Funeral Home in Mount Airy is serving the Martin family.

MARTIN

MOUNT AIRY - Mrs. Ruth Louise Banner Martin, 75, of 490 Campbell Road, Mount Airy, widow of Mr. Carl Eugene Martin Sr., died Sunday morning, Dec. 30, 2001, at her home. Mrs. Martin was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Surry County to the late Claude and Chloe Hughes Banner. She was retired from the Renfro Corp. and was a member of the Albion Baptist Church. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Carl Eugene (Gene) Jr. and Susan Martin of Mount Airy; three grandsons and spouses, Tommy and Renee Martin of Mount Airy, David and Susan Martin of Mount Airy, Ronnie and LaWanda Martin of Ararat; nine great-grandchildren, Brittany Hutchens of King, C.T. Martin, Casey Martin, R.J. Martin, Kelsey Martin, Katherine Martin, all of Mount Airy, Courtney Reed, Lakin Martin and Ashlin Martin, all of Ararat; a brother and sister-in-law, William C. and Pat Banner, of Lowgap, and a sister and brother-in-law, Carolyn and Bobby Howell of Tulsa, Okla. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2002, at Moody Funeral Home Chapel of Mount Airy conducted by the Rev. Roger Vaden with burial to follow in Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Moody Funeral Home where her body will remain until the hour of the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Northern Hospice, 1033 U.S. 52 North, Mount Airy, NC 27030.
